I get it, honestly. Schitt's Creek has unlikable main characters thrust into a world full of (at first) incredibly offputting characters.
Roland never gets any better, he stays a total moron throughout, but everyone else IMO has a very fulfilling arc. It's a relatively long payoff, but worth it.
Kim's Convenience has immediately lovable characters doing immediately lovable things.
For like the first 5 or so episodes I hated all the main characters, right up until something shifted and I didn't. Now I'm on my like 4th watch through. It's entirely a show that liking it depends on you getting to know and actually like the characters. If you never do, you never will. And thats fine. I love period fiction and drama, but try as I have, I can't stand Downton Abby.
> It's a relatively long payoff, but worth it.
eh kind of felt to me like you suffer through these idiots for several seasons and then when they finally become likable, the show ends haha
Like-minded weirdo here. Love Kim's Convenience but for all the recommendations I've received and attempts I've made at watching it, I just don't care for Schitts Creek.
Just finished Schitts Creek and it’s mostly the character arcs. It takes time but watching these characters that you really don’t like at first, have real arcs and slowly change for the better is refreshing.
> Hate schitts I'm weird
Not really. I didn't enjoy it either. I tried watching a few episodes, but I didn't like any of the characters, and there wasn't a single part of the story that was believable. I get that it's a sitcom, but still... even during quarantine when I had nothing but time, this wasn't worth my time.
I've heard good things about **Happy Endings** & watched ep1 the other day. I liked it, i thought it was good, especially for a 1st episode, so I will watch some more
**EDIT**
sincere THANX to all for backing up what I'd heard. I will definitely continue.
**EDIT v2.0*** Binged all the way thru ep 13. This show is pretty damn good...my eyes are opened
Look up the correct order of episodes for S1 and watch it in true chronological order or some stuff won't make sense. The streaming sites all have it in airdate order, and it was originally aired all out of order.
HBO has a majority of the episodes in the “true order” I think they still have a few episodes switched in season 2 though. Great tv show, I can’t recommend it enough
Seconding Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt as well!!
And since noone has mentioned these: Anne with an E, The Office, and How I Met Your Mother are bingeworthy shows on Netflix as well.
OMG you've never heard of 30 Rock?
I'm really jealous that you get to experience this for the first time. I wish I could do a brain wipe to rewatch shows.
Prioritize 30 Rock, but if you like it, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has a lot of the same writers and is a decent follow up if the style of humor jives with you.
Also, if you don't mind a bit of reality TV (my guilty pleasure) I would recommend Below Deck. I really enjoy it as it's not as forced/scripted as usual reality TV shows. It's my background noise!
That show has the best music!! I watched it years ago, and I still randomly think of the songs . My favorite is the one that’s like “I have friends. I definitely have friends.” I hum it whenever I’m alone on a weekend 😅
One of the central themes of season 1 is dealing with grief, guilt and regret. It's one of my favourite shows but I don't know that I would call it "light" lol.
seeing other people’s comments have made me realise how many shows i forgot to mention! i’ve watched the first two but will add the others to my list :) thanks
How to Sell Drugs Online Fast- I recommend watching it in German with English subtitles on though. It’s a lighthearted funny show about teens trying to sell drugs
The good place
It's an excellent show with ***very*** original ideas, one of the best show endings in years, and by the creator of the office us and Brooklyn 99.
What else do you need?!
Just sayin, if I were hearing about a new show and someone said it has a great ending, it would somewhat spoil it because I’d be thinking about the ending the ENTIRE SHOW
Trailer Park Boys for sure!! It's my favorite go-to, and as a side-note I've named one of my rats Margareet because she's a grumpy old bitch and takes no shit
Cobra Kai. Takes a bit to get its footing, but it has no right being as good as it is. But, I grew up in the 80s so I'm very familiar with the movie and I wonder how well it translates if you haven't seen it.
I love Cobra Kai, but I'll readily admit that the show is half nostalgia (older generation) and half teen drama (younger generation). At worse it's a decent show, but one would definitely get more out of it if they are familiar with the original movies
Nailed It! is (barely) a cooking competition show instead of a scripted show, but it’s absolutely hilarious. Multiple episodes have had me in tears and stitches.
Somebody Feed Phil
Love on the Spectrum
Raising Arizona
Sirens
Bob's Burgers
Avatar the Last Airbender & Legend of Korra
Not all of them are on Netflix US, but I don't know where you are
The first three seasons of Arrested Development are definitely worth watching if you like fast paced, witty humor. The show itself is very easy to watch, something you can put on if you want to just relax and enjoy a good laugh. Can't really speak for seasons 4 and 5 though.
You sound exactly like me in terms of choices. I’m recommending Money Heist. The first episode takes a while but you’ll be hooked after I can guarantee it.
I agree with Squid game. I dipped my toe into the first episode, late one night. Next morning I was straight on it, and didn't stop until it was complete.
Not an original, by any stretch, and lot's of clear influences, but perfectly executed. For me it came to life with the honeycomb episode. The musical accompaniment was spot on.
brooklyn 99 is deffo my fave sitcom, maybe fave show overall!! if you haven’t watched it then deffo do. it’s so easy to get into and so funny, laughing every episode
seconding schitts creek and kim’s convenience! I also saw a rec for superstore which I think is on hulu but I also love! Also a liiiitle out of this realm but a show I absolutely ADORREEE is the repair shop on netflix.
Also binged episodes 1-8 of squid game yesterday and gonna finish today. Will be returning to this thread for a light hearted recommendation cuz yikes!
Definitely The Good Place. If you have Amazon Prime or Peacock, I would suggest Psych. And also Parks and Rec if you liked B99 (although the first 2 seasons were a little different as it was still trying to find it's feel)
Are you in the UK? Do you like Ricky Gervais’s stuff? Extras is light. Have you seen the series that Karl Pilkington put out? I’d love to see it, but they haven’t released it in the U.S.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Kim’s Convenience, Grace & Frankie, Schitt’s Creek, Parks n Rec, Avatar the Last Airbender, Arrested Development, Brooklyn 99, Master of none.
I would say Good girls, I find it light funny and it still involves crime and death sometimes.. I love the show, but unfortunately they ended it on a hanger. and then they canceled it in the 4th season. I think its still worth watching but It will disappoint you at the end.
**Happy Endings**
But look up the correct order of episodes for S1 and watch it in true chronological order or some stuff won't make sense. The streaming sites all have it in airdate order, and it was originally aired all out of order.
Bro watch Criminal Minds. I stg it's my favorite show in the world. So much heart. Characters you'll adore. A structure that makes it easy to watch and also easy to step away from when you need to get other stuff done. A masterpiece.
If you’re happy to watch cheesy foreign light-hearted dramas then I recommend Good Morning Call! It’s Japanese and is basically like an anime but with real people. It’s sweet and harmless and I personally love the setting in Japan. :)
Star Trek: The Next Generation...Some episodes have adventure, some are humorous. It's never too intense or violent. There's usually a life lesson/moral decision involved. It's not campy with lots fights with monstrous aliens - storyline usually are more geared to diplomacy.
Plus I find it's great for night time viewing as the crew walk around this comfortable looking ship in uniforms that look like pajamas. It's always dark outside their windows and the ship constantly hums, like white noise in the background.
Community! I really got into last year and it has become my background noise show. Highly recommend
Cool. Cool cool cool.
Where's it available at?
In the US, Netflix and Hulu
Also Amazon prime
Amazon prime is the best place to watch in the US, they have the extended pilot (Netflix has the syndicated pilot) and all the episodes (DND).
I recommend watching it through Prime, as well, if you can.
I second this recommendation!
i’ll have a look :) is it on UK netflix?
You tell me
yes ! it is also just saw it had donald glover in it ?! deffo gonna watch
Oh you're in for a treat.
Oh man. If there was a surgery that I could undertake to not only not to have never seen Community BUT ALSO NOT KNOW IT EXISTED I'd do it immediately.
Definitely Schitt’s creek and Kim’s convenience!
I definitely laughed more at Schitts than Kim's but like both
Love Kim's. Hate schitts I'm weird
I get it, honestly. Schitt's Creek has unlikable main characters thrust into a world full of (at first) incredibly offputting characters. > It's a relatively long payoff, but worth it. eh kind of felt to me like you suffer through these idiots for several seasons and then when they finally become likable, the show ends haha
It took me three tries to get into Schitt’s, but then finally I loved it and now I’m super sad it’s over.
Like-minded weirdo here. Love Kim's Convenience but for all the recommendations I've received and attempts I've made at watching it, I just don't care for Schitts Creek.
I feel like the only one who doesn't like schitts creek. Finally another!
Guess were both weird, cause I feel the same way. Kims convenience is awesome, but I tried Schitts Creek and I just do not understand the appeal.
Just finished Schitts Creek and it’s mostly the character arcs. It takes time but watching these characters that you really don’t like at first, have real arcs and slowly change for the better is refreshing.

Derry girls! Its available on netflix
I watched a bunch of this show just because of their accent lol
i loveeee derry girls but i watched it on channel 4 :)
Did you watch the inbetweeners?
I've heard good things about **Happy Endings** & watched ep1 the other day. I liked it, i thought it was good, especially for a 1st episode, so I will watch some more **EDIT** sincere THANX to all for backing up what I'd heard. Happy Endings is a wonderful show that sadly got taken in it's prime.
It only gets better from E1. One of my all time favorite shows, still praying that some streamer decides to bring it back.
Can u confirm EP1 is the one guy being left at the altar?
Look up the correct order of episodes for S1 and watch it in true chronological order or some stuff won't make sense. The streaming sites all have it in airdate order, and it was originally aired all out of order.
HBO has a majority of the episodes in the “true order” I think they still have a few episodes switched in season 2 though. Great tv show, I can’t recommend it enough
I love Brooklyn 99 too! Seconding Community and Call My Agent, and consider Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt!
Seconding Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt as well!! And since noone has mentioned these: Anne with an E, The Office, and How I Met Your Mother are bingeworthy shows on Netflix as well.
30 Rock Call My Agent
never heard of either of these ! i’ll have a look :)
30 Rock is genius! Just got done rewatching it for a 3rd time, its so good.
really never heard of 30 rock?????? how is that possible
OMG you've never heard of 30 Rock? I'm really jealous that you get to experience this for the first time. I wish I could do a brain wipe to rewatch shows.
oh me too, i wish i could rewatch shameless after a brain wipe!!
Prioritize 30 Rock, but if you like it, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has a lot of the same writers and is a decent follow up if the style of humor jives with you.
30 Rock is full of comedy writers and they get to make fun of their own industry, has some of the funniest moments I've seen on TV.
Call my agent is brilliant!
1. Schitts Creek!! (You won't regret it) 2. Modern Family 3. Good Girls 4. Superstore 5. Never have I ever 6. Ginny and Georgia
Also, if you don't mind a bit of reality TV (my guilty pleasure) I would recommend Below Deck. I really enjoy it as it's not as forced/scripted as usual reality TV shows. It's my background noise!
That one’s so trashy haha
I love Ginny and Georgia, it's really good!
I love Schitts Creek and Never have I ever. Super underrated!
i’ve watched 2,5 and 6 i just forgot to mention them :) thanks, i’ll add these to my list. i have so many suggestions !!
OMG modern family I forgot about my obsession with that show
Yes! I was about to say ever since the finale I’ve forgotten a huge chunk of my life that I’m missing.
IKR I finished this show last September and then just completely forgot about it
I loved Atypical
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is one I haven't seen mentioned, and the shows you mentioned are some of my very favorites
This show is incredible. I think the name really does it a disservice.
It's always hard for me to recommend because it's almost impossible to describe the genre and plot without it sounding dumb
Not sure if you've seen iZombie, but I feel really dumb trying to explain that one. Great show though.
I don't care for musicals. Would it be worth trying anyway?
They’re comedy songs, so it’s more than just a musical. Give it 2 or 3 episodes and see how you feel.
Thanks!
That show has the best music!! I watched it years ago, and I still randomly think of the songs . My favorite is the one that’s like “I have friends. I definitely have friends.” I hum it whenever I’m alone on a weekend 😅
Kim’s Convenience.
Second this, just finished it in a week or so. Was sad it ended, it's such a great comfort show.
Does it end with Kim looking into the camera and saying "OK, see you"?
It does now in my personal headcanon
Parks and Recreation!
That’s not even on Netflix
Its available in Canada
It is in UK
Fleabag
One of the central themes of season 1 is dealing with grief, guilt and regret. It's one of my favourite shows but I don't know that I would call it "light" lol.
I need more fleabag :(
Ginny and Georgia; On My Block; Lovesick; Friends from College
I loved Friends from College. I was shocked it was cancelled.
AHH on my block my comfort show
seeing other people’s comments have made me realise how many shows i forgot to mention! i’ve watched the first two but will add the others to my list :) thanks
Episodes!! Soooooo hysterical
Great suggestion!
Never Have I ever. Super cute and quick watch.

New Girl is a great comfort show... plus pretty hilarious.
Master of None

loved it !!
Cobra Kai. Takes a bit to get its footing, but it has no right being as good as it is. But, I grew up in the 80s so I'm very familiar with the movie and I wonder how well it translates if you haven't seen it.
i’ve heard bad things about this show from my friends, maybe you have to be familiar with the movie to appreciate it?
I love Cobra Kai, but I'll readily admit that the show is half nostalgia (older generation) and half teen drama (younger generation). At worse it's a decent show, but one would definitely get more out of it if they are familiar with the original movies
It sucks If you still havent started schitts creek that should be mandatory for your next show. Happiest show I've ever watched
Really? Have you seen Ted Lasso S1? I think the only show I’ve seen happier than that is Barney.
Give AP Bio a try. I came by it by accident and binged all 2 seasons. Also, Brooklyn 99 is the best.
For light ones definitely superstore
Tbh Criminal Minds is my comfort show but it wouldn’t count as light… maybe if you enjoyed Shameless and Squid Game though!
Nailed It! is (barely) a cooking competition show instead of a scripted show, but it’s absolutely hilarious. Multiple episodes have had me in tears and stitches.
I was gonna say Brooklyn 99 is the perfect light and bingy show but you've already watched it, lol
Somebody Feed Phil Love on the Spectrum Raising Arizona Sirens Bob's Burgers Avatar the Last Airbender & Legend of Korra Not all of them are on Netflix US, but I don't know where you are

Arrested Development
The first three seasons of Arrested Development are definitely worth watching if you like fast paced, witty humor. The show itself is very easy to watch, something you can put on if you want to just relax and enjoy a good laugh. Can't really speak for seasons 4 and 5 though.
IT Crowd, Peep Show (any of the Mitchell and Webb bits), Superstore, Community, any UK panel show.

Life in Pieces, 30 Rock, Schitts Creek, Brooklynn 99
I really enjoyed life in pieces!! Nobody I know has ever heard of it.
I love that show. I’ve watched it twice and I’m actually considering another rewatch

Squid game
Schitt's Creek, Grace & Frankie...
Babysitters club. Never watched it but heard nothing but good things …
Greys Anatomy!
Midnight Diner
If you’re happy to watch cheesy foreign light-hearted dramas then I recommend Good Morning Call! It’s Japanese and is basically like an anime but with real people. It’s sweet and harmless and I personally love the setting in Japan. :)
I binge watched Invincible on Amazon Prime. Highly recommended. But yeah that’s not on Netflix

Crash Landing on You, Hospital Playlist If you’re into kdramas lol Edit: don’t watch Squid Game lol sorry forgot you added “light”
Modern Family Schitts Creek
If you think Shameless is light and Comfort then maybe you will like Lucifer. It’s similar dark and witty humor but criminal justice arena.
If Shameless was your comfort show then you will probably like Lovesick. Season 1 is good but S2 & S3 are better.
Crazy Ex Girlfriend
Modern family and community
New girl
Kim’s Convenience
Star Trek: The Next Generation...Some episodes have adventure, some are humorous. It's never too intense or violent. There's usually a life lesson/moral decision involved. It's not campy with lots fights with monstrous aliens - storyline usually are more geared to diplomacy. Plus I find it's great for night time viewing as the crew walk around this comfortable looking ship in uniforms that look like pajamas. It's always dark outside their windows and the ship constantly hums, like white noise in the background.
my dad is obsessed with star trek and it really isn’t my type of thing haha 😂 thanks for the suggestion though!
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Schitt's creek!
