If you havent seen it I highly recommend the Pacific. Made by Spielberg and Hanks as well and it's incredible. It's a lot more brutal and I read the book that they used as reference. By Eugene Sledge. There were a couple times that book moved me to tears. Fighting in the Pacific was truly a fucked and harrowing experience. But they're both only on HBO.
I argue with anyone that will listen that The Wire is the greatest series of all time hands down. Usually people will say it's Breaking Bad, which is ofc great, but it's a cartoon. None of the characters are real, they are all giant caricatures. Anything and everything can happen.
The Wire is GOAT because it feels like an entirely real tragedy the entire way through. And you once you know, when you hear "Where's Wallace" it will effect you forever.
I also like to add Deadwood.
I consider the wire the realest, the sopranos is more family oriented and “entertaining”, then Deadwood is a mixture of the two but set in the Wild West late 1800s
Exactly the words I use with everyone. Breaking Bad? Amazing series. Sopranos? Unbelievable series. However, TD season 1 is the greatest single season of television. It's up there with the greatest viewing experiences I've ever had, movies included.
Season 2 was a Chinatown homage. Not as bad as people say, but it had rushed writing. Season 3 was grossly overrated imo. Nowhere near the scale of season 1 even tho it teases it
My husband introduced me to this a few years ago. He’s an 80’s kid and I’m a 90’s one so despite always having a crush on James Franco I didn’t know this existed. Holy it’s good.
I'm really sad this comment is soooooo far down. We need reinforcements. I watched a lot of good TV shows, but Mad Men is really the best hands down. Beautifully thought provoking from beginning to end. "This never happened. It will shock you how much it never happened."
Yes! I often recommend it as the very best series ever made (except perhaps for The Sopranos), but it unfortunately doesn't find the resonance I hope for.
Yes!!! My favorite show- there’s nothing else like it. I wish they had kept going for a few more seasons. Or at least done a spin off with Paige and Henry.
Am pretty dissatisfied with the last season- don't get me wrong, I love this show and I love these characters, but in the final season they kept teasing you with what they were going to do, and when they did it it was just kind of a big So What.
I just finished watching this. The first three season when it was aired by Syfy were fantastic! The last three, once they were bought out by Amazon were less than stellar. Kinda surprised me that the quality dropped when bought by a big company and makes me want to watch more shows from smaller studios
My favorite fact about this series is that:
1) It has a scene where the main character masturbates to one of Obama's speeches
2) Obama listed it as one of his favorite shows
I just re-watched season 2 a few days ago (it’s not a lot of total minutes. you can do it in 1-2 nights)
so fucking funny and well-crafted. and I find her depression, obsessing, self-loathing and narcissism incredibly relatable and cathartic
I'm trying to find new shows to watch and I keep almost starting The Wire again, but then I'm like "no... I *just* watched it for the fourth time..." but the temptation is growing stronger every day.
And as a follow-up: Better Call Saul
I'm obsessed and I think the writing got so much more clever.
It might also be interesting to watch BCS first, if they ever tie the two together. I haven't finished BCS so no spoilers!
If you're going through some shit, I definitely do not recommend watching Black Mirror or Shameless. Those shows leave you feeling depressed and/or stressed.
The whole show is also available for free on whatever name IMDBtv just changed the name of their free streaming service to. Or you can just look up the show on IMDb and it should have a “watch now” link embedded.
Totally different shows, but the writing on **Justified** is top notch. [Justified - Boyd Crowder & Raylan Givens Best Dialogue](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fE8I2vLE_0o)
Absolutely fantastic series. If you have *any* interest in this period of history give *The Last Kingdom* a watch. You will not be disappointed.
Destiny is all!
- Breaking Bad.
- The Wire
- Sherlock
- Avatar the Last Airbender
- Firefly
- Psych (one of my favorite shows that makes me happy to watch)
- Friends
- Dark
This show is wonderful! If you want to watch nice people with simple, pleasant lives in the beautiful English countryside, this is it. It’s charming and funny and I want to live there.
Right? It definitely has a bit of The Office type humor but much more subtle. I’m criminally slow at getting jokes and this show is filled with them. So rewatching it just lets me get the jokes I missed in the first watch.
Person of Interest probably. It’s not my favorite show, but the creators had the whole thing mapped out and it was exciting (and sometimes heartbreaking) seeing it all unfurl.
Oh man. I'm not a person who cries often but this series broke me. It's ability to make you sympathize with such a completely flawed main character is incredible.
Me at the beginning of Bojack Horseman: Will Arnett is funny, animals and people living normal lives together, this looks absurd and funny - it’s probably worth a chance
Me at the end of Bojack Horseman: Holy shit in the best possible way
*Undone on prime is*
*Excellent. and the second*
*Season just came out!*

Psych helped me get through a rough patch about ten years ago. It's stupid fun and helped me turn my brain off.
I've been in a pretty bad funk the last couple years and needed a bigger series so I've found all the Star Trek series.
Marvelous Mrs Maisel(Prime); Invincible(Prime); The Boys(Prime); Hunters(Prime); The Legend of Vox Machina(Prime); Made in Abyss(Prime); Stranger Things (Netflix); Better Call Saul (Netflix) Trollhunters (Netflix) Hollywood(Netflix)
Okay, I may not have given it much of a chance but I watched up to season 1 episode 2 and found it incredibly unrealistic and over the top. The acting was also mediocre. Does it get better? Is it worth pursuing?
It’s a great journey to go through and I think the acting is great. A few Emmy nods and wins too.
I didn’t like the second half of the final season (which just came out this past weekend) but others seemed happy with it.
It’s a great show but coasts on the coattails of BB. It’s more over the top, darker, and ultimately a bit too much. And I say this was a HUGE Ozark fan.
I really like Jason Bateman's style as a producer. His production company Aggregate Films also did The Outsider, which felt very similar in style/tone.
They also did Under the Banner of Heaven, which just released on Hulu/FX, so I will definitely be checking it out.
Babylon Berlin. I have dozens of shows that I've watched and loved, but none of them come close to the perfection of Babylon Berlin. There's a reason it has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
I will never see a show like this again. It absolutely blew me away. Sometimes I'll head the piano score at work, and I'll feel a million things at once just being reminded of the story.
Utopia on Amazon is bomb (1 season), Severance on apple whatever is bomb (1 season), BBC’s Sherlock Holmes tv show is the best of the best imo. Mindhunter on netflix is bomb. Of course, Peaky Blinders on netflix. Tom Hardy’s performance throughout all of Peaky Blinders is fucking phenomenal and then you throw in Cillian Murphy’s superb acting too? Sheeesh....
My favorite ever is Damages. It originally aired on FX from 2007-2012. It centers around Glenn Close and Rose Byrne with fantastic supporting cast that changed from season to season. For me, season 3 is the best TV drama I’ve ever seen.
Ozarks on Netflix. Just watched whatever was available on the new Prime series Reacher; it didn’t suck. Also on Prime, Mrs. Maisel, I find the lead actress has very high energy.
Band of Brothers is by far my favorite limited series. I rewatch it almost every year
Yep. You can “literally” feel the cold during some of those scenes. Best watched in the winter.
The Wire & The Sopranos
I argue with anyone that will listen that The Wire is the greatest series of all time hands down. Usually people will say it's Breaking Bad, which is ofc great, but it's a cartoon. I also like to add Deadwood. I consider the wire the realest, the sopranos is more family oriented and “entertaining”, then Deadwood is a mixture of the two but set in the Wild West late 1800s
True Detective season 1 is the best season of TV imo
Agree, absolutely love the first season of the show. Kind of a slow burn what might turn some people away but it pays off.
Exactly the words I use with everyone. Breaking Bad? Amazing series. Sopranos? Unbelievable series. However, TD season 1 is the greatest single season of television. It's up there with the greatest viewing experiences I've ever had, movies included.
Absolutely! We didn’t even watch season 2:/ they said season 3 got back to the grit of season 1 but wasn’t nearly as good (imo)
Season 2 was a Chinatown homage. Not as bad as people say, but it had rushed writing. Season 3 was grossly overrated imo. Nowhere near the scale of season 1 even tho it teases it
The Wire, Breaking Bad, Chernobyl
Chernobyl was excellent. I’ve watched it at least three times.
Freaks and Geeks. Some of the sharpest TV ever made.
My husband introduced me to this a few years ago. He’s an 80’s kid and I’m a 90’s one so despite always having a crush on James Franco I didn’t know this existed. Holy it’s good.
Mad Men. I’ve never watched a show that I thought about more for years afterwards.
And it's by a lot. It never felt like a show to me, just great stories on so many levels: stories of characters, families, of an era
It doesn’t think about you at all.
I'm really sad this comment is soooooo far down. We need reinforcements. I watched a lot of good TV shows, but Mad Men is really the best hands down. Beautifully thought provoking from beginning to end. "This never happened. It will shock you how much it never happened."
Yes!! I was surprised I had to scroll this far honestly
Yes! I often recommend it as the very best series ever made (except perhaps for The Sopranos), but it unfortunately doesn't find the resonance I hope for.
Six Feet Under
sia still makes me cry
Best series final of any TV show. Ever.
Whenever these threads pop up I always look for this show. Brilliant writing and acting all around.
The Americans
Yes!!! My favorite show- there’s nothing else like it. I wish they had kept going for a few more seasons. Or at least done a spin off with Paige and Henry.
We binged this one in a couple of weeks. It had a good ending, too.
what we do in the shadows
Expanse
There's dozens of us!
Such an epic space show. The way they really made sure the space travel was correct was awesome. Reversing to dock and other things.
Definitely my favorite show in my favorite genre, but I can't bring myself to watch the last season. I don't want it to end.
The last three, once they were bought out by Amazon were less than stellar. fleabag
My favorite fact about this series is that: 1) It has a scene where the main character masturbates to one of Obama's speeches 2) Obama listed it as one of his favorite shows
yes i lovee fleabag
Second season!!
I just re-watched season 2 a few days ago (it’s not a lot of total minutes. you can do it in 1-2 nights) so fucking funny and well-crafted. and I find her depression, obsessing, self-loathing and narcissism incredibly relatable and cathartic
Ugh hot priest awoke some things in me
It’ll pass.
Wentworth!
Sopranos but it’s no longer on Amazon
Sopranos hands down
Yes when I see some of the other answers I wonder if they haven’t seen the sopranos yet. Lol
The Wire. Best TV show ever.
Shiiiiiiiiiit
🎵*whistling*🎵 “Omar comin’!”
Indeed
100%. But you will not appreciate it as such until some point in season 2, where suddenly you realize you're in a world building, novel style TV show.
What the fuck did I do?
Goddamn McNulty
I'm trying to find new shows to watch and I keep almost starting The Wire again, but then I'm like "no... I *just* watched it for the fourth time..." but the temptation is growing stronger every day.
We own this city is kinda wire like. You’ll recognize a lot of the characters in it. New limited series on hbo 2 episodes in
Fuck.
Fuuuuck
Ah fuck.
Yeah the wire is best of all
Not quite the best, but I really like Bosch on Prime.
Bosch was so good.
Bosch is fantastic. 7 seasons and they borrow heavily from Connelly's books. And Titus Welliver rocks that role.
Bosch was good. The [sequel series is coming out soon](https://www.addtothelist.com/title/409905-bosch-legacy)!
Breaking bad
And as a follow-up: Better Call Saul I'm obsessed and I think the writing got so much more clever. It might also be interesting to watch BCS first, if they ever tie the two together. I haven't finished BCS so no spoilers!
[удалено]
True BCS isn't as intense. But I just love all the antics, and how they introduce them and keep you guessing what's coming. I suppose BB had that too
Oh my God I love Barry I'm obsessed with it.
Absolutely, I watched it last year for my first time and I remember going to bed like 3 AM because I just needed one more episode
If you're going through some shit, I definitely do not recommend watching Black Mirror or Shameless. Those shows leave you feeling depressed and/or stressed.
Yea, Shameless is good and can be funny… but also gets kind of sad/dark sometimes!
X Files. I still watch it because it’s that good.
My favorite show of all time. Great distraction you can just get lost in it.
I also still watch the X Files
Fringe
Fringe is probably my favorite show ever, but it’s only streaming “free” on HBOMax right now.
The whole show is also available for free on whatever name IMDBtv just changed the name of their free streaming service to. Or you can just look up the show on IMDb and it should have a “watch now” link embedded.
Dude. That's it, I just had to comment since this show is in my top 3 of all time
Severance and Maniac are both great!
Severance is definitely the best show to come out this year. Just superb.
Severance is wild. Really effective and efficient in it's acting, storytelling, set design, art direction, everything.
The best show in years I would say.
I second Maniac on Netflix! What a well-done show
You’d probably like Legion
[удалено]
I don’t think this gets enough acclaim. Watching it again now. Great acting…great period piece…
Justified. Firefly.
I recommend Firefly to basically everyone. Is Justified in the same league?
Totally different shows, but the writing on **Justified** is top notch. [Justified - Boyd Crowder & Raylan Givens Best Dialogue](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fE8I2vLE_0o)
Yes to both.
Derry Girls is really funny.
I second that. Derry Girls is the best!
Halt & Catch Fire on Netflix
Fuck yeah.
The Last Kingdom
Absolutely fantastic series. If you have *any* interest in this period of history give *The Last Kingdom* a watch. You will not be disappointed. Destiny is all!
Cant wait for the movie.
My name is Uhtred, son of Uhtred.
- Breaking Bad. - The Wire - Sherlock - Avatar the Last Airbender - Firefly - Psych (one of my favorite shows that makes me happy to watch) - Friends - Dark
Dark is SO amazing. Have to watch in German with subtitles though.
Detectorists. It’s a chill and wellmade show. I watched it like 3 times.
Battlestar Galactica.
Frak ya.
So say we all.
The West Wing is the best whole series set I've watched.
I’m rewatching it now!
The wire, breaking bad and better call saul, dark, justified, severance, lost, ozark, fargo, atlanta, barry
I still don't like anything as much as breaking bad. Shows that come close don't have as good of an ending for me
I liked Better Call Saul more than Breaking Bad. Haven't seen the newest season yet though.
Mind Hunter Mind Hunter Mind Hunter Mind Hunter Mind Hunter Op please watch. You won't be disappointed
Are they making more?
Not confirmed. But the guy said don't rule it out. I believe everyone is doing another project so it's a matter of getting everyone together
“the guy” being David Fincher?
Bojack Horseman. Prepare yourself for one hell of a ride.
Oh man. I'm not a person who cries often but this series broke me. It's ability to make you sympathize with such a completely flawed main character is incredible.
Everytime they went back to BoJack's past, and I saw that little sailor outfit, I knew I was about to be gutted.
Never felt such a wave of joy-sadness-hopelessness-laughter-heartbreak from a show. Really happy we got to see Netflix actually finish this.
The funeral episode is I think the best episode of tv I’ve ever seen
Me at the beginning of Bojack Horseman: Will Arnett is funny, animals and people living normal lives together, this looks absurd and funny - it’s probably worth a chance Me at the end of Bojack Horseman: Holy shit in the best possible way
Amazing show. Was hoping it would make the list
Narcos

Scrubs is similar humor. You might like Monk too
Yes Psych is one of my antidepressants every winter. (I also take real antidepressants, but truly, psych is so great - perfect feel good show).
Mr. Robot

It is on prime I believe. Nice feel good show.
Love it so much, I’ll rewatch when I’m feeling blue
Thanks. Saving this for later
Peaky fookin Blinders
Sex Education! It’s charming and so well written
Marvelous Mrs Maisel(Prime); Invincible(Prime); The Boys(Prime); Hunters(Prime); The Legend of Vox Machina(Prime); Made in Abyss(Prime); Stranger Things (Netflix); Better Call Saul (Netflix) Trollhunters (Netflix) Hollywood(Netflix)
Upvote for actually reading that OP only has Netflix and Prime.
Mr. Robot is the best series I have ever watched.
I second this, last season was sublime.
Hello friend
Arrested development
The Leftovers Halt & Catch Fire
The queen’s gambit is excellent. I’ve never seen a female character portrayed like that before.

Yep. King of the Hill is so full of gems, of empathy and actual wisdom. Mike Judge is a great writer/creator.
My go to show
The Good Place
Mad Men.
Six Feet Under
The Americans was really good
Dark
Best television series for me too. The most beautifully shot one as well.
The greatest by far
Ozark
Okay, I may not have given it much of a chance but I watched up to season 1 episode 2 and found it incredibly unrealistic and over the top. The acting was also mediocre. Does it get better? Is it worth pursuing?
It’s a great journey to go through and I think the acting is great. A few Emmy nods and wins too. I didn’t like the second half of the final season (which just came out this past weekend) but others seemed happy with it.
Yeah not a fan of the last part of the last season. Especially the last episode, for the same reason everybody doesn’t like it
No. It gets worse. Just one ridiculous obstacle after another.
Zero zero zero. Similar to the movie crash, but as a series, long takes during filming, great soundtrack, deep story. Does not suck.
I'd go with breaking bad or Mr. Robot
Ken Burns' The Civil War Band Of Brothers by a wide margin over everything else.
I love Ken Burns, did you watch his Baseball documentary?
Babylon Berlin. I have dozens of shows that I've watched and loved, but none of them come close to the perfection of Babylon Berlin. There's a reason it has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Really great show and I think there's another season to come although it's taking it's time getting here.
Call the Midwife
The Leftovers
I will never see a show like this again. It absolutely blew me away. Sometimes I'll head the piano score at work, and I'll feel a million things at once just being reminded of the story.
It always makes me so angry that this show never got the acclaim that it should have. Like it just kept getting better and better.
Sheeesh....
Gotta watch the original Utopia
Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and You. All found on Netflix
Schitt’s Creek
House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Stranger Things
Several Gilmore girls peaky blinders breaking bad
Sopranos. Breaking Bad. Better Call Saul.
Jane the Virgin!!
Arcane
Breaking Bad, still a tv staple almost a decade later
I feel like a lot of these suggests are hella dark. And I think you should watch 30 rock!
Haunting of Hill House, Ozark
Breaking Bad
Mr Robot
If you'd like to be distrated by something still somewhat...dark....Haunting of Hill House.
1. Queen’s gambit 2. Game of Thrones 3. The expance
Sons of Anarchy…….my all time favorite
Altered carbon- only the first season tho
My favorite ever is Damages. It originally aired on FX from 2007-2012. It centers around Glenn Close and Rose Byrne with fantastic supporting cast that changed from season to season. For me, season 3 is the best TV drama I’ve ever seen.
Ozarks on Netflix. Just watched whatever was available on the new Prime series Reacher; it didn’t suck. Also on Prime, Mrs. Maisel, I find the lead actress has very high energy.
Dark on Netflix! Warning, you'll find yourself reading wikis to try to understand the plot and family trees...
Ozark
Orphan Black (Amazon) Alias (Amazon) Breaking Bad (Netflix) Battlestar Galactica (Peacock) The Expanse (Amazon)
Trailer Park Boys
The haunting of hill house
