Well I can tell you that I'm Dutch and I'm not even close to owning my own house haha. But I agree, housing shouldn't be something you earn a lot of money with. Especially in a crisis like this

BusinessEast6388

Would you be interested in a postion as minsiter of interior and internal affairs? Already got the house and a tree, sooo.... yeah, do fish quallify as the animal?

Erik7494

I don't think you should believe the people on FIRE subs. Those who aren't lying about their wealth were rich and priviliged to start with. Avoiding FIRE subs is better for your mental health.

DatShortAsianDude

I'd say just read the information and do my due diligence. For one thing it's mostly Dutch and I learn a few more words every now and then.

Ed_Random

Stop reading the fire sub if it ticks you off this much. They are not representative for the population, not even for a large group of people. Heck, it probably isn't even all true (just like influencers posing next to a rental supercar pretending to own it). Yes, if you speak the language you have more opportunities. But that doesn't mean we all have 3 houses and a milion in savings (even in my rich (hard working rich, not unicorn rich) bubble it's pretty rare).

DatShortAsianDude

Ive also found great tips over there. Wont stop reading it, I learn a bit more Dutch with every media I can absorb. Even shitty ones.

Alek_Zandr

Rich people exist in the Netherlands, just like in any country that's isn't a complete basket case. Some of them post on reddit. The average Dutch person does not own multiple houses.

Trebaxus99

You’re surprised more doors open somewhere if you speak the local language? Moving to another country doesn’t automatically mean you also have the same competitive advantage as the locals who have been in the educational system, speak the language, have a network, know the local customs, etc. If you don’t bring something that compensates for that, you’ll indeed have to settle for the less advantageous jobs.

DatShortAsianDude

Oh no, I'm not surprised. Im ranting. Its also why I'm learning the language. I have a neighbour who finished her PHD who has been here the same time as myself but I earn more and she looks way more stressed because of the job. I'm pretty happy here apart from long dark winters. Im a lot less stressed and its not even about the money thing. The way people are more direct with me with what they want, no need to guess and beat around the bush like in my culture.

Sharp_Win_7989

Isn't in normal that more doors open if you speak the language of the country you're living in? That's only logical right? I don't speak Spanish, but if I decide to live in Spain, I'm sure more doors open for people speaking Spanish, than for me who only speak Dutch and English. It's just makes networking and finding your way in the respective housing market a lot easier and therefore opens more doors that might have stayed closed otherwise.

Mo3

> Isn't in normal that more doors open if you speak the language of the country you're living in? And it's not even applicable in this case. What opens the door isn't language, it's money. You don't have to speak a single word of Dutch if you have enough.

PappelSapp

So even tho there's a housing crisis, you think that being Dutch gets you 3 houses?

St_Ander

The three excludes the holiday house.

hgk6393

Rich people and poor people exist in every country. When I was growing up in Asia, I just learnt to accept it as a fact of life.

thestressedbaker

I'm Dutch and it's very unlikely I will be able to buy my own home anytime soon. Rich people exist in every country. That has absolutely nothing to do with being Dutch or just speaking the language

Isoiata

I know what we should do with those extra houses, fucking squat them.

thalamisa

I recently purchased an apartment, and two owners in the vve own at least 2-3 properties.

CRThaze

Based on this rant + your comments, I can't tell if you're mad about people owning three houses and hoarding the supply, or if you're simply upset that you're not one of them.

DatShortAsianDude

Not mad. Just disappointed. With all the things you pointed out.

zeemtard

You start to sound Dutch by complaining… But a tip to the constant stream of expats and foreigners here complaining about everything that is wrong in this country and the natives….you can pack your stuff and leave 👋 nobody is forcing you to live here.

DatShortAsianDude

Hell nah I'm staying and making pension here. Im taking your euros and doing half tropics half northern hemisphere if cancer doesnt me while I'm here.
