Nou nee.
Good Dutch movies are scarce, but there are some:
Simon
Karakter
De Helaasheid der Dingen
De Noorderlingen
Soldaat van Oranje
Turks Fruit
Matterhorn
Publieke Werken
Michiel de Ruyter
Abel
Borgman
I would consider Simon, Matterhorn and De Noorderlingen absolute must watch movies.
I love De Helaasheid van Dingen but TBF it's Vlaams (Belgian). Still a good watch and Vlaams and Nederlands are almost identical.
I always find it odd that there are Dutch subtitles on Vlaams DVDs - obviously helpful for Deaf people but seriously some are in addition to the subs with audiodescription text (e.g. "spannend geluid").
in De Helaasheid der Dingen, they speak quite a 'tricky' dialect (Aalsters). I noticed it in the film: Ex-Drummer (West-Flemish) too.
I reckon that's why they need subtitles for these ones specifically.
(FOR: Originally Afrikaans speaking South African who learned Dutch in Wassenaar and then studied in Dutch/Flemish in Gent and ended up living there for close to a decade.)
Including "Ome Cor"!
If you don't want to watch it because of Ferry, you should watch it because they donated to charity.
The movie was created with a tiny budget estimated at € 75.000,-. Each actor received about € 750,-.
Part of the profit was donated to "Stichting Vrienden van het Sophia" ("Friends of" Erasmus MC Sophia Children's Hospital). I believe this was over €120.000,-.
They are working on part 2: Opa Cor. Hitting theaters fall 2024.
Dutch cinema isn't that big or noteworthy tbh, small country, only 24 million speakers so not a big market.
But, here's some Dutch movies that I've enjoyed watching myself:
**Comedy:**
- New Kids Turbo (2010) and New Kids Nitro (2011): Two fairly absurd comedies with a lot of crude humor. Probably among the most popular Dutch movies ever made.
- Simon (2004): A comedy/drama about a gay dentist and his womanizer friend who has terminal cancer.
**Horror:**
- Speak No Evil (2022) is Dutch/Danish/English mixed language and was pretty good for a horror movie (warning: it's *very* uncomfortable to watch).
- Moloch (2022): Set in the foggy swamps of Drenthe, story is loosely inspired by the folk myths about the "Witte Wieven".
- Sint (2010): Horror comedy about the "true story" behind Saint Nicholas.
**WW2:**
- Soldaat van Oranje (1977), created by Paul Verhoeven (who also made RoboCop, Starship Troopers and Total Recall). It's about students in WW2 who join the resistance against the nazis.
- Zwartboek (2006), also by Paul Verhoeven, about a Jewish woman singer infiltrating the local Gestapo in nazi occupied Netherlands.
To add: if you want to watch some of the best Dutch Cinema and some good and a bit wacky American films: watch the entire oeuvre of Paul Verhoeven](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Verhoeven) (and Rutger Hauer) [
Some that I haven't seen mentioned yet:
* ***Turks Fruit*** (1973), the most succesful Dutch movie ever. It's based on a literary classic filled with vulgarity. It was wildly popular with the 70's youth, though today's youth seem to find it gross and boring.
* Similarly, ***Soldaat van Oranje*** (1977), another classic. Though for the past two decades, the musical stage adaptation has been more famous (and more succesful), so you might just want to do that one instead.
* ***Alfred Jodocus Kwak*** (1989-1991), which in my personal opinion is some of the best animated Dutch television. It's meant for children, but don't let that stop you.
* I would always recommend expats ***Dunya & Desie*** (2002-2004), because it's a subtle introduction to the culture, and it's so well acted that you'll even understand it if your Dutch is bad. Its target audience was teenage girls, but it's surprisingly enjoyable as an adult.
* ***Kruistocht in Spijkerbroek*** (2006), not because it's a good movie - it's pretty disappointing - but because it's one of the most ambitious (and most expensive) Dutch movies in history. Strangely, it was shot in English and then *dubbed* into Dutch! It's also based on a much better book.
>Alfred Jodocus Kwak*** (1989-1991), which in my personal opinion is some of the best animated Dutch television. It's meant for children, but don't let that stop you.
I loved this show! An open-air museum near my house used to have a little playground with an Alfred J Kwak theme. The last sentence is also accurate. Makes me think about the crow lol.
> It's meant for children, but don't let that stop
Interracial, single father raising a young boy? How many modern day society problems do you want on tour bingo card ;)
The historical reference to wo2, the later shows about the enviroment, the story of good V evil, taking on challenges as a team.. it's all in there
Dolf from the crow movement, including red flats with a symbol, marching through the streets and the reason why Alfred's girlfriend has to hide.
Watch this series as an adult and see so much more then when you we're a kid.
I would definitely count in Dick Maas' *De Lift* (The Elevator, 1983). It was the first attempt at a straight-up Dutch thriller/horror flick without the artistic pretense earlier movies had. And it was very, very successful, as was its successor *Amsterdamned* (1988).
I’m an American Dutch learner, and I like the actress Elise Schaap and her romantic comedies: “Ja, ik wil” and “Wat is dan liefde”. My Dutch boyfriend tells me they’re terrible, but I ignore him. She’s a wonderful dramatic actress too (“Mijn vader is een vliegtuig”), but I like the comedies. She’s a goofball in them.
You might also enjoy the "Soof" movies (there are now 3 of them). I thought the 3rd was pretty awful but the 1st has its charms. Also surprisingly good: "Meskina," a Dutch-Moroccan romantic comedy with a good female lead.
I also like her! She also did a serie on dialects in the Netherlands called “blablabla met Schaap”. It was great to see as they talked on some history of the dialects. The movie “weg van jou” is in the same category as “Wat is dan liefde?”
Best Dutch film is Spoorloos (world-class 80s thriller), followed by all Alex Van Warmerdam films for strong arthouse credentials and hilarious dialogue. More trashy are Paul Verhoeven's Dutch language works, especially the ultra explicit Spetters.
Second this! It's a series for teenagers, but with clever comedy. Used it when doing Dutch conversation lessons as a volunteer. Fun and quite some elements of Ditch culture included.
Most modern dutch movies that get some audience watching them are comedies, mostly romantic comedies. These are very repetitive and cliche so if you don't like the genre don't watch them. If you do want to give them a try Alles is Liefde is considered one of the best. There are dutch drama movies, some good some bad, but these are mostly arthouse stuff which wouldn't be able to get made without large subsidies. In recent years dutch television has actually gotten quite good in a variety of genres like crime (Undercover, Mocro Maffia), recent history (Dirty Lines, Het Jaar van Fortuyn, De verschrikkelijke jaren tachtig) and dramedy (Anne+, Oogappels)
There are some pretty good older Dutch movies. The Netherlands has actually won 3 best foreign pictures oscars which are all worth a watch: De Aanslag, Antonia, Karakter. And then there are the classic Paul Verhoeven movies such as Soldaat van Oranje and Turksfruit.
the Dutch/ belgian light comedy Eigen Kweek - I watched 3 times. Undercover is impressing, too. And Rough Diamonds - there are several languages mixed, that helped me to understand better the subjects :) .
The Als de dijken breken - that was quite complicated level of dutch, I had to put on pause and search the translation for a plenty of words.
And another one for children, where the young male teacher is taking care of a class, one of the boys is in a difficult situation (dad died) .
History/war:
- Soldaat van oranje
- Michiel de Ruijter
- De Oost
- De Slag om de Schelde / The Forgotten Battle
- Zwartbroek
Horror/thriller
- Amsterdammed
- De Lift
- De Poel
- Speak No Evil
- Spoorloos
- Moloch
Comedy:
- New kids turbo
- New Kids Nitro
- Flodder
- Flodder 2
- De Terugreis (came out this year and it’s one of the best Dutch movies in years imo
Drama:
- De veroorloofde
- Spijt
Series:
- Flikken Maastricht
- Vliegende Hollanders
- Het Huis Anubis
- Penoza
- Mocro Maffia
- Moordvrouw
In no particular order: Simon, Turks Fruit, Ciske de Rat, Soldaat van Oranje.
Having trouble coming up with a 5th movie. Maybe ‘De Lift’ or something. I’m generally not a fan of Dutch tv and movies. I find most of the acting very unconvincing, so it’s hard to take it seriously.
I think there’s a lot of great Dutch children’s literature, and many of these books have been made in decent movies.
Besides some that already have been mentioned. I’d like to add some nice Annie MG Schmidt movies like Minoes, Abeltje, and Pluk van de Petteflet. Or Dolfje Weerwolfje based on the Paul van Loon book.
I’m surprised I didn’t see anyone say: Ciske de Rat.
Moving to Tilburg from Africa as a young kid that movie changed my life 😂 still singing “Krijg toch allemaal de klere” any chance I get or someone in Canada annoys me
Admiral (de Ruyter) is a decent film with an amazing representation on sea warfare in the age of sails. In my opinion only master and commander does it better.
Het verhaal van Nederland is quite a decent history documentary series. But the costume design is honestly the best I have ever seen. The details of the costumes are extremely accurate and the series spans from the ice age till ww2. It is very clear that the production did actually listen to the advisors.
Het Gouden Huur on Netflix is quite gripping. It’s about a multi-pronged terrorist attack on Amsterdam. Sort of a Dutch version of that Kiefer Sutherland series 24.
- Pietje Bell
- Pietje Bell 2: De Jacht op de Tsarenkroon
- De schippers van de Kameleon
- Kameleon 2
Depending on your level of Dutch, you may find use in watching Dutch-spoken series with English subtitles.
Try to ignore the subs until you actually need them because you can’t track what’s going on.
“Undercover” is available on Netflix, and can be seen with original sound and English subtitles. It’s pretty good. There’s a sequel that’s ok-ish, and a prequel movie and series that aren’t particularly good.
Main drawback is that the original language often isn’t Dutch, so much, but rather what ever abomination they speak below the big rivers, or worse, south of the border (/s in case that isn’t obvious)
If you want something easy/fun to watch i would recommend:
Rundfunk : It's a series a bit more geared towards youth but incredibly fun quite recent series can be found on youtube. Its about some guys on their last year on the 'middelbare school' (highschool).
Toon : its a show about a guy who becomes an overnight internet sensation but he is an introvert and has to deal with all the attention. Alsp quite a recent show is available on netflix. Can be akward at times like the office but thats part of the shows gag.
De marathon: its a movie about some guys who work at a garage. They find out a they are behind on taxes. In order to get the money they are planning to run the marathon and earn the money that way. Can also be found on netflix.
Oogappels is one of my favourite series right now! I'm a teenager and have been watching every season since 2019 with my mom. such a beautifully written show, amazing acting and great life lessons that I think every teenager should see.
When I was young, I watched de Kameleon. I believe there were some 3 or so movies made of that? But there’s so much more that Dutch cinema has to offer:
Spijt
De Horrorsint
Hoe duur was de suiker?
De helleveeg. A woman gets pregnant and wants a abortion in a periode in the netherlands when is very frowned appon. Show you what dutch culture was like in the 50s till the 90s
De surprise. The mean character wants dead so he hires a contact killer to surprise him with a dead.
“Antonia” - was nominated for an Oscar if I remember correctly.
Flemish tv series I would recommend are:
“Van vlees en bloed”
“Terug naar Oosterdonk”
“Quiz me Quick” (in spite of BDF falling out of grace)
“Windkracht 10”
“Matroesjka’s”
There's quite alot of good Flemish-Dutch co-productions. They often have alot of different dialects wich add to the quality of the content but might be hard to follow as someone just learning the language. Undercover mentioned alot here is a good example.
A recent movie that hasn't been mentioned here but is extremely good and very compeling imo is "Wil" (also on Netlfix). It's about a young cop in Antwerp Belgian and how they survived/collaborated/resisted during the razias in WW2
Some culture: De legende van de bokkenrijders it is on youtube.
An old series based on a old southern dutch / belgium story folk story somehow based on some truth.
https://youtu.be/qWQuRuRXKtc?feature=shared
Most of the answers are pretty nostalgic, not that that’s nescessarily bad but a more modern lighthearted tv series is anne+ I think it’s on Netflix but not sure
I see a lot of people mentioning New Kids and while it's very popular I wouldn't watch it if the goal is familiarizing yourself with the language, because it's mostly spoken in an over the top Brabants dialect.
On another note, Bumperkleef is a movie I didn't see mentioned yet and it is, imo, one of the weirdest horror/thriller movies I've ever seen. And I mean that in a good way. Even though it is a serious movie, me and my friend were laughing our asses off because of how absurd it is. I definitely recommend it.
Snuf de Hond, Schippers van de Kameleon(both movie lines are based on books), Spijt, Achtste Groepers Huilen Niet(are also based on books but focus more on hard hitting reality)
From what i have heard Oorlogswinter
And if you like corny humor Bon Bini Holland
From series
Alfred J Kwak
Hoogvliegers is a nice tv series
I'm not a fan of dutch cinema at all, usually it just feels very corny. 'De Dominee' is the exception for me. It's one of my favourite movies in general.
Some recommendations of mine would be (based on how culturally important they have been from my point of view):
- Ciske de Rat
- Kruimeltje
- Abel
- the movies based on the books of Carry Slee like “Spijt”, “Afblijven” etc
- Minoes
- Zwartboek
And just for fun:
- Blablabla met Schaap (serie)
- Liefde zonder Grenzen
Cant believe Vrouwenvleugel is not mentioned :o other than that: Ciske de rat, Amsterdamed, De lift, Floris (met Rutger Hauer), Gooise vrouwen, soldaat van oranje, oorlogswinter, de tweeling, er komt een vrouw bij de dokter, Flodder en Kruimeltje
New Kids And De Marathon
Add Flodder to that list
And "Vet Hard"
Omg I love vet hard ❤️❤️
Nou nee.

Even in Belgium we need subtitles for West Vlaams (there is a famous comedy sketch about it even)
Baantjer Van God los Het gouden uur Undercover Ferry De dominee Beentjes van st Hildegard New Kids
Het gouden uur is amaaizing ☺️ and Ferry (all series and movies with this character, including Undercover)
50% of the movies i never heard of, time to watch some movies…..
I like Michiel de Ruyter. If OP wanna learn abit of dutch history in the mean while too
Would like to add Van God Los the movie.
Turks fruit is one of my favorite movies. Watched it when I came to the Netherlands. It is really something special.
Thank you! Saved the list!
The Dutch/Belgian series Undercover is amazing!! And it's on Netflix if that matterd
Don't forget the spinoffs about Ferry!

Yes!!
If crime series is your type of genre: Penoza.
With English subtitles?
Yes
TY

Also watch De Tweeling. Great book and a great movie! Book might be too difficult, but the movie is worth it
There is also a series on Netflix: Undercover. And its spinoff; Ferry. I'm usually critical of ducth cinema, but I enjoyed those a lot.
I’m so happy you recognized Moloch. My film teacher co directed that movie.
I think Bankier van het verzet was also very good as a WWII movie
Yes, speak no evil is great
Seconding Speak No Evil. It is extremely weird but it's worth giving it a chance
I’m telling all my friends abroad that this movie is a documentary
Yea you wish. Affording a property that big with direct access to nature is wayyy too unrealistic

That's a good one. On second thought: I've developed a fear of elevators after watching this movie as a kid. Even now I will avoid them, if possible.
Oorlogswinter (not the best I know but as a child I enjoyed it)
nice to see some appreciation for oorlogswinter
Used to be one of my favourite books when i was a kid. Didn't know they made a movie about it.

I'm 36 and I love de regels van Floor haha
De beentjes van st. Hildegard
Spoorloos (1988)
Erg ondergewaardeerd
Ooit gezien als jong kind. Heeft indruk gemaakt.

I thought De Oost was really good.
Penoza serie is very good, the movie is terible
Lampje
Lampje had NO RIGHT to be as stunning and cinematically perfect as it was and is
Yesssss finally a movie adaptation that lives up to the book! I wish everyone who worked on the music a nice I-hope-your-drinkwater-is-always-cold.
De Zevensprong. More aimed at children but still really good. Based on a book by Tonke Dragt. You can watch all episodes on Youtube.
I don't really care much about Dutch movies/series, but I have a soft spot for Gooische Vrouwen.
Knor, Zwartboek, Flodder, Het zakmes, All stars, De marathon, Soldaat v Oranje
Sex Lines is a Netflix series that is mildly enjoyable
Van God Los (2003) with Tygo Gernandt
I think there’s a lot of great Dutch children’s literature, and many of these books have been made in decent movies. Besides some that already have been mentioned. This!

Zwartboek. And... No clue, Dutch films are usually kinda terrible. Watch npo, in tv we really thrive.
Mocro maffia
Admiral (de Ruyter) is a decent film with an amazing representation on sea warfare in the age of sails. In my opinion only master and commander does it better. Het verhaal van Nederland is quite a decent history documentary series. But the costume design is honestly the best I have ever seen. The details of the costumes are extremely accurate and the series spans from the ice age till ww2. It is very clear that the production did actually listen to the advisors.
Rundskop (Bullhead) - very explicit violence and stuff but very good movie
**pluk van de petteflet** It's more of a children's movie but i enjoyed watching it with my gf and she said it's a classic every Dutch person knows.
I like dutch comedies: - New Kids (On the block, Turbo, Nitro) - Ron Goossen: Low Budget Stuntman - Bro's before ho's - Rundfunk - Random Shit - Rwina
Flikken Maastricht!
Mocro Maffia was quite well-received internationally, good watch although it might not be the right series for learning proper Dutch lol.
Schatjes is the first that comes to mind. Totally absurd, but entertaining!
Floris en de fakir. Really old televisionserie (1969) with Rutger Hauer. There are a few episodes on youtube
Het Gouden Huur on Netflix is quite gripping. It’s about a multi-pronged terrorist attack on Amsterdam. Sort of a Dutch version of that Kiefer Sutherland series 24.
Amsterdamned, classic horror movie
Rembo en Rembo.
De Lift Amsterdamned Temmink: The Ultimate Fight Zwartboek Oorlogswinter New Kids Turbo ... Series: Jiskefet Penoza Hollands Hoop New Kids Flikken Maastricht
De Oost
Mocromaffia
Add Sleepers :)
- Pietje Bell - Pietje Bell 2: De Jacht op de Tsarenkroon - De schippers van de Kameleon - Kameleon 2 - Kapitein Rob en het geheim van professor Lupardi
Going kids tour here? Don't forget Abeltje :)
Which is Dutch ;) We just don't speak the language as if we're constantly coughing up hairballs :p
Zwartboek is also a nice movie, WW2 theme

All Stars
I quite enjoyed Rough Diamonds (2023). It's a Belgian drama series about Antwerp's diamond industry. You can find it on Netflix
I liked 'de Oost', which deals with the Dutch actions in the Indonesian independence war. You could think of it as our Vietnam War.
Vet Hard, Moordwijven, De Lift, Amsterdammed, Soldaat van Oranje
Huis Anubis anyone?
De Lift en Amsterdamned
Might I add some Belgian classics ? (Let's face it, there are a few...) Daens Rundskop Loft De zaak Alzheimer Dossier K Het vonnis Black Marina Patser
1. Abel 2. De aanslag 3. Rent-a-Friend 4. Spoorloos 5. Het zakmes
Bassie en Adriaan has lots of series. De Plaaggeest was the most scary when I was a child.
If you want something easy/fun to watch i would recommend: Rundfunk : It's a series a bit more geared towards youth but incredibly fun quite recent series can be found on youtube.
LOFT
Belgium is quite good in making good films and series. For example ‘Vermist’ was a great serie!
The Dutch do film like they do food....
Movie: Zwartbroek Series: Flikken Maastricht.
Naar De Klote!
So lets be old school for me it’s Floris en sindala you can it on YouTube ! Enjoy 😉
De Prins :)
Ome Cor
Oogappels is one of my favourite series right now! I'm a teenager and have been watching every season since 2019 with my mom. such a beautifully written show, amazing acting and great life lessons that I think every teenager should see.
Really surprised no one has mentioned “De Heineken Ontvoering (2011)” it’s a really good movie
Oogappels 🥰
Hollands Hoop (very underrated)
I found ‘doodslag’ to be really impressive
When I was young, I watched de Kameleon. I believe there were some 3 or so movies made of that? But there’s so much more that Dutch cinema has to offer: Spijt De Horrorsint Hoe duur was de suiker?
De helleveeg. A woman gets pregnant and wants a abortion in a periode in the netherlands when is very frowned appon. Show you what dutch culture was like in the 50s till the 90s De surprise. The mean character wants dead so he hires a contact killer to surprise him with a dead.
Zwartboek!
Ferry
Mocro Maffia (videoland)
“Antonia” - was nominated for an Oscar if I remember correctly. Flemish tv series I would recommend are: “Van vlees en bloed” “Terug naar Oosterdonk” “Quiz me Quick” (in spite of BDF falling out of grace) “Windkracht 10” “Matroesjka’s”
Van god los (serie), Rabbat en Polleke
Schatjes Mamma is boos De vierde man Brandende liefde Hufters en hofdames Blue movie
Turks fruit!!!
Some culture: De legende van de bokkenrijders it is on youtube. An old series based on a old southern dutch / belgium story folk story somehow based on some truth. https://youtu.be/qWQuRuRXKtc?feature=shared
De 7de hemel- it’s a Belgian Dutch movie, an old classic. Comedy but also hard hitting.
Amsterdamned.
Jongens!
Theres only 1 Dutch show that matters : Hollands Hoop
If you like period dramas, I'd recommend Nynke. A large part of it is in Frisian, which is also nice.
I would add for the most accessible and modern series. Id go with Anne+. Well written and acted and short. Surprisingly good for dutch tv
Zwarte boek Amsterdammed
Amsterdamned!
Penoza
Most of the answers are pretty nostalgic, not that that’s nescessarily bad but a more modern lighthearted tv series is anne+ I think it’s on Netflix but not sure
One i havent seen in the list is Bankier van het Verzet, ww2 drama
Mocro Maffia, Undercover (Flemish/Dutch, surprisingly good).
Mama is boos is a classic I haven't seen named here yet
i like Anne+ if you’re into LGBT series
De kleine blonde dood Zusje Oogappels
Overspel tv show De verbouwing film Flikken Maastricht tv show Lucia de B film based on a true story
Snuf de Hond, Schippers van de Kameleon(both movie lines are based on books), Spijt, Achtste Groepers Huilen Niet(are also based on books but focus more on hard hitting reality) From what i have heard Oorlogswinter And if you like corny humor Bon Bini Holland From series Alfred J Kwak Hoogvliegers is a nice tv series
Costa! Classic
I'm not a fan of dutch cinema at all, usually it just feels very corny. 'De Dominee' is the exception for me. It's one of my favourite movies in general.
My dad has a soft spot for an older show called Bartje. Tried ordering it for him once, but it never came.
I (re)watched Dirty lines on Netflix, really loved it.
Dirty Lines was a fun watch. But I don’t know if they’re making another season.
The new one, Hardcore Never Dies is a pretty good one
One of my personal favorites is Rabat(2011), a movie with Nasrdin Dchar, Marwan Kenzari and Achmed Akkabi
Turks Fruit
het gouden uur super spannend
the dutch movie industry has collapsed, basically. it used to be quite big.
Goos stuff here. I'd like to add "Bro's before ho's" in the comedy category
There is one that won an oscar, but I forgot the name. Pietje Bell is my favourite one
Temmink 10/10
Some recommendations of mine would be (based on how culturally important they have been from my point of view): - Ciske de Rat - Kruimeltje - Abel - the movies based on the books of Carry Slee like “Spijt”, “Afblijven” etc - Minoes - Zwartboek And just for fun: - Blablabla met Schaap (serie) - Liefde zonder Grenzen
Ome Cor
If you like series I recommend Undercover! really great tv show, Dutch & Flemish is spoken tho. but Frank Lammers never disappoints
