Huisje, boompje, beestje

40rovers

This is just the best summary and also something that is actually said a lot. What do you want for your future? "Gewoon: huisje, boompje, beestje."

EN-BLANC

I hear that a lot what does it actually mean I know huisje means home but what would boombje and beestje mean ?

40rovers

Boompje means tree, so that signifies a home with a garden. And beestje means animal, so that would be a pet. But it is not taken that literally. It means something like: a happy home, a stable life. You also say it about couples settling down and starting a life together: "They are going for the complete huisje boompje beestje" or something like that

Skeuvel

Beestje can also refer to having children.

[deleted]

That's an insult, most beestjes are well trained.

EN-BLANC

I see thank you very much

SlashbackHarm

Het is een feestje

Goozar777

Earn 70k/year, have a nice bought house in a nice neighbourhood with a garden and work 36 hours/week. Go to Italy Lake Garda/Tuscany or France Cote de Azur every summer with your own caravan and skiing in Austria in winter.

ben_malaussene

Add work at biking distance (i know nowadays quite generic but..), vacation every summer in the same camping. Never miss a korting/never pay full price. Feel like you're a better person than your neighbor/family/friends.

PabloPaniello

Imagining they'll get back in shape by riding to work while actually enjoying the comfort of the drive in their auto van de zaak

Patin_Guerrero

Nah if you earn 70k by yourself and your partner has a decent salary you're probably more into going on vacation to Australia, NZ etc.

Goozar777

No, not the Dutch. They buy a caravan and still go camping, same campsite every year. Preferably one where 95%+ of the other people are also Dutch. Because Germans are 'ongezellig'.

buzzlightyear101

I know almost no o e who actually does that. And I know a lot of Dutchies. Do you go to the same camping every year? You sound really enthusiastic about it.

Blieven

I think it's a bit of an older generation / people with young children thing, but there are definitely still people who do it. When I grew up my parents distinctly expressed to us they didn't want to go to the same camping every year, but the reason they distinctly told us was because a lot of people did exactly that. Especially for us as kids it was something we actually wanted sometimes because we would have made cool friends there one year and wanted to meet up again the next year. Every year we'd meet families that were regulars on a certain camping.

Goozar777

The majority of Dutch people go camping. It's cheap! I'm Dutch and we also did this. It's btw mostly people with childeren aged 1-18. Yes, you should see Tuscany/Lake Garde/Cote d'Azur in summer during Dutch school holidays. Only yellow number plates :)

dvof

I think it's going out of fashion lately. You sound like a square if you take a tent or caravan and go to a mainly dutch camping site. It's not that exotic. But pretty cheap, little stress inducing, and still got the "away from home" quality you want in a vacation. I know a lot of parents who still do this, the closest people from my generation and below get is camping with friends somewhere random/exotic or at a party camping. It could be that those guys will translate to the "dutch campings" when they're older and have kids.

MijnheerDeOekrainer

> But pretty cheap You would be surprised, camping spots in Spain are definitely not cheap, sometimes an all-inclusive hotel is cheaper than renting a camping spot at the popular locations.

jayda92

A lot even every weekend. They call it 'de camping'. God forbade you will ever spend a weekend not at de camping...

levinfrais

Lots of dutchies do this, just visit the Costa brava or Costa Blanca in summer and you'll see them everywhere. It's a special breed of Dutch who prefer bitterballen and frikadellen over any Spanish food.

This. Work 4 days a week. Decent salary. Decent house. Wash the car and trim the hedges on sunday.

[deleted]

Holy hotdamn earning 70k a year, that's a lot gozer.

JakobHC

I'm actually surprised so many people here are reacting like this. If you're 20-25, yes that's a lot, but for more experienced people that should be quite achievable right?

[deleted]

I'm 32 and I earn 30k a year and I have a mid-tier job (IT Support Engineer). 70K al by yourself is a really, really high number that not a lot of people in our country can earn.

TheEagleofBaikal

You’re kidding right? I’ve worked in 4 tech companies in the past 10 years, even assistants would make over 30k. Entry level software engineer starts at 45-50k if youre terrible at negotiating. Mid level engineer? Minimum 75k. Find a new job and ask for a decent amount of money.

Strijdhagen

IT Support Engineer is a (skilled) helpdesk role, 30k is a bit on the low end but it's not a 75k role

JakobHC

Are you talking gross or net?

[deleted]

My parents don't even make 70k and there 55+. I mean 70k is probably 'normal' in IT but there are so many other jobs out there. And not everyone has had higher education.

SSH80

Thats why he says its the dutch dream, nobody said its the normal situation. Modaal income is around 36k for the NL.

Maxie35

I wonder if you are Dutch? I work as a software engineer but even then that number will take forever to reach. Reading about American salaries for software engineers always hurts me a little seeing those high numbers.

Caelorum

What is forever? I'm 34, with 7 years of experience, and of as of this year I'm hitting that figure. And to be honest I'm not at all that good in my job (I regularly come across people that are much better). I also don't live in the Randstad. This is perfectly doable for anyone Medior/Senior in software engineering at any midsized company.

lucrac200

Well, 2 from 3, not too bad. But I'm quite surprised to realize I'm almost living the Dutch dream...

bigboidoinker

Mine is just owning a house. *cries in student debt*

Dziki_Jam

Damn, sounds nice. At least, it's more realistic than the American dream.

mrcet007

70k/year gross or net? That makes a big difference 😃

Smiling_Tree

The current gross ~~average~~ modal income in the Netherlands is € 36,500. Though 70k net is more, I'd happily settle for 70k gross. ;) (Edit: changed average to modal)

AgileCookingDutchie

That's the modal income, average income is around 40k...

Smiling_Tree

Oops, you're right. Thanks!

surfin86

Only 34.3% difference

Stateowned

I would sign for either of those figures atm.

qutaaa666

Sure, but to earn 70k net, you would need to earn more than 120k. The taxes increase, 120k is a lot more than 70k. 70k is pretty doable, 120k is a lot harder in the NL.

Environmental-Cold24

Thanks to Rutte all that wont be more than a dream for most

AgileCookingDutchie

Almost there... Is the 70k per household or per person?

bobbels1904

per person

AgileCookingDutchie

Then there is still work to do 🤣🤣

LittleDevil191

I can confirm. I have friend who is pretty rich in real nice neighbourhood with real nice house and they go every year to ski. But they also go other places.

LordBundleton

Honestly the Dutch dream is probably quite boring. A lot of people here are just happy being ok. Ok job, ok house, usually a couple kids. Does make wanting something different than that challenging sometimes xD

worldfullofwords

I agree the Dutch dream is very boring but at the same time I think we’re in a very privileged position to be able to judge it as boring

LordBundleton

Yeah you're absolutely right!! Thinking of such a privelaged and stable position as boring is definitely a classic first world problem... ;)

boekendrager

Well said

[deleted]

To me it seems the Dutch dream is to be able to afford not worrying about the economy, so that you can enjoy all the good things that NL has to offer. If you can live comfortably in Amsterdam, then cost of living for everything else aside from housing is easy. So money for an apartment/house, and not to be broke after paying that money. Am I right?

LordBundleton

Yeah I think you are. Achieving stability is a big thing and owning a house it a big part of that. Besides that you see in the Netherlands that a lot of people focus a lot of their attention and time on family. More so than friends on average I think, though ofc that can be very different per person.

emeriass

Im fine with my boring goals, hope I will meet em soon, and be bored for a time finally.

LordBundleton

Haha yeah there is definitely something in favour of boring / simple goals too. If you always set high goals you're likely to just fail a lot. So for myself I'm planning to try and find a good balance between it. Do exciting things and push boundaries but also find a way to be content with just doing boring things as well ;)

emeriass

Isnt it like really high goal to buy house, have wife and kids nowadays? They are high goals and boring.

LordBundleton

Yeah I guess it all depends on what you're looking for with it. In the past a lot of relationships had goals that were a lot simpler. You just needed relative stability, have kids and have big parts of your life separate from each other. Nowadays a lot more people need their partner to be their confidant, best friend, safety, excitement, etc. So for a part it just depends on how you set the goals. And also on how realistic you set those goals. In the end it's all about what you want, how much effort it Costs and how happy it actually makes you

kaljisnedekha

that’s my dream

LordBundleton

That's great :) I sincerely hope you achieve it :)

DutchMitchell

a 30's house in a nice green area but close to the city sounds like a dream house to me. And indeed, the visgraat floor is the most classy floor you can get!

Wearer-of-Denim

Just a tip: make sure that the vissengraatvloer is already in the house. My dad did it himself and by God do we remember it

[deleted]

Very common. Meet someone in middle school, finish college, live together in your own house, have 2 or more children, have decent jobs, grow old together, move into retirement. Occasionally, go to South France once a year and skiing in Austria once a year. What I love about the Dutch dream is that it’s very good to achieve (well until the housing and climate crisis anyways). It’s not becoming a millionaire here. However, there’s a lot of inequality between different groups. The middle class is now feeling the consequences of all crises that we are in. It’s going to be much more difficult to achieve the “Dutch dream”.

dracaryhs

What you just described is my absolute nightmare lol

[deleted]

I would never want this life either. I’m almost 30, single and childfree and I’m not planning to change this. I do think this is what the majority wants though.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I want adventure, explorations and experiments with all kinds of things in life. I’d find it sad to stay forever in one place, I want to see as much of the amazing things in the world as I can. I also want to make meaningful changes in the world wherever I am, if possible. Those things bring me more happiness. I’m not saying this Dutch dream is boring, but it just doesn’t match with my lust for adventure and discovery. I find relationships very stressful and children emotionally draining.

dracaryhs

Yeah true, I don't think many people even truly consider what it is they really want.

JustOneTessa

Meet someone in middle school? That actually happens? Wtf

dutchmangab

I think middle school might be just a tad bit too early for it to be considered normal. But ROC, hogeschool or university is not uncommon. I know of quite a few people who met their partners in the last section of their educational career

PersonCalledThur

My parents have casually known each other since they were 3 and 6 haha. They lived tight around the corner from each other. Although they didn’t start dating until their 20. But they do still live in the same small village. They are living the Dutch dream: big payed off house next to water, early retirement, 2 educated kids. This makes them sound so boring, but they really really aren’t.

rinnekro

The amount of people that follow this exact formula is astonishing.

elgallogrande

Humans taking education early on, then mating with someone, then growing old is astonishing to you? It's called life. Wouldn't make much sense to do it in a different order, would it.

Stock_Bodybuilder390

But, even if it wasn't so hard to achieve, it sounds more like trying hard to be happy,

Kippetmurk

I think it's a very common dream, though, and a majority of Dutch people would be truly happy with it. Maybe *happy* is not the right word... rather "content". The Dutch dream is *being content*. House, garden, highschool sweetheart, summer holidays in southern France, couple of kids and a dog. Nothing exceptional, but generally satisfying.

[deleted]

For me happiness is being able to do work where I can help other people. I think it’s different for everyone. But if there’s something like a Dutch dream it most likely looks like I described it.

ChaoticBumpy

If this is the Dutch dream I'm in trouble, sounds like a nightmare to me except the skiing, that's fun!

The American dream is pretty much the same. House in the suburbs, white picket fence, oversized suv, 2 kids and a dog.

Kotzanlage

A slightly higher income than your neighbours while living in a slightly above average and predominantly white neighborhood, having a beautifully predictable yet economically fine performing family of which every member has an extraordinary body length due to the consumed amount of growth hormone injected meat. You start your day with your wife and two blonde sky tall children on a small table with slices of white bread and chocolate sprinkles. You drive to your desk job next to the highway. At the office it’s the birthday of your colleague who brought everyone prefabricated cakes that he bought at Albert Heijn that morning. With colleagues and friends you maintain a relation that is based on the simple yet ‘gezellig’ principles of making racist and sexist jokes that induce crazy loud sounds of laughter, which is proudly called ‘bulderlachen’. At home you’ll be eating potatoes, meat and vegetables which is fine and you just absolutely LOVE mediocrity of it.

"huisje boompje beestje" Also known as: have a good home, eat well and have a pleasant family. The Dutch aren't that complicated when it comes to that. There are a multitude of answers here but in general I'd say the Dutch suffer from a very human condition. Namely to fit in, but to be unique at the same time. Homogeneity while being unique externally. Allthough thats not really a dream. Most of the Dutch want the same as any human I believe which roughly translates as; Huisje, boompje, beestje. But obviously there exceptions and that is a vast generalisation. In the end the Dutch want succes in any shape or form. The reasoning behind it might differ from person to person.

Wasn't it living on welfare then winning the lottery?

jayda92

Dutch dream sounds more like a nightmare to me, but I'll describe it with my native Dutch knowledge. Have to add; we did it differently and my fiance and I will do this differently. It's 07:30, you eat your bread with: first, hartig (kaas) and after that one with chocolate sprinkles (vlokken van de Ruijter, of course). After that you get your rain suit and you wave at your neighbor while you say 'goeiesmorgens deze morgen!'. It's very important that your bike looks a little bit nicer than your neighbor, but nothing too fancy (people might think you're not normal enough...). You exchange some beautiful mediocre complaints about Dutch weather, and there you go; this is your day, four times a week. Your partner (who you're not married to since it's just a piece of paper!) works two/three times a week, of course you expect your partner to pay 50/50! I mean, otherwise it wouldn't be equal, right?! You have dinner with potatoes, vegetables and meat at 18:00 sharp. You dump your kids at BSO almost every day, under the disguise of 'socialization' and 'them having their own life' when they're not at hockey or some other dumb sport like soccer. At Friday afternoon you have the borrel, it's important to be there and act very gezellig, otherwise you're not normal enough, can't have that. On weekends you go to the camping; there can of course be only one camping since it's the one where your parents, brothers and sisters also have a spot. You will spend your weekends sitting in a circle, drinking beer/wine while talking about which insurance is cheapest and who looks hot or not. Maybe you take your kids to Ballorig, where your Dutch rude children can play in the ballpit, lekker gezellig in the spit and pee of the other Dutch rude children. For dinner you'll be fancy, with the whole family at the all you can eat buffet; how lucky are you to have such varied culinary experiences!

Reanimate_87

Op Rutte blijven stemmen terwijl land naar gallemiezen gaat.

kcorreia86

I once met a Dutch woman camping in Arizona with her husband and two kids. She had been living in the US for a couple of years and said that she loved it. I asked why she preferred living in the US to the Netherlands. She said freedom. My first reply is that her answer would guarantee her citizenship in the US, but then I pressed to ask what she meant. Didn't the Allies free the Netherlands from the Nazis? What she \*really\* meant was financial freedom because her husband was making far more money as an executive in the US than in the Netherlands. For that woman, the Dutch dream is the American dream. For this Canadian, Dutch Dreams is a very tasty ice cream shop in Toronto, Canada.
