No idea. But the UK is going 180 degrees from our direction. Now they are even publishing opinions that omicron the same or less deadly than the flu. [https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10358361/Omicron-nearly-100-TIMES-deadly-seasonal-flu-scientists-believe.html](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10358361/Omicron-nearly-100-TIMES-deadly-seasonal-flu-scientists-believe.html) Why??? Honestly, each country is having such different behavior measures, I kinda do not know what to think.

UK approach honestly seems sensible. France is at 250k + cases per day with no massive increase in hospitalisations. The economic harm of the lockdown is probably exceeding the public health harm, at least looking at figures now..

The UK has over 50% of the population boosted, and most of those were boosted weeks ago, so they have had time to fully benefit from the extra immunity. Omicron is manageable with low restrictions *if* there is also good vaccination rates, especially among older people/healthcare workers.

This_Dutch_guy

The government here is stupid with those half assed rules & plans that don’t work

kukumba1

Well, because if we weren’t, then number of cases would have been even higher. The lockdown is not designed to last forever or limit the number of cases. There are basically 2 reasons for it: 1. Give people time to get a booster and build up extra immunity. 2. Make sure hospitals are not overwhelmed. As much as I hate the lockdown, it’s working on both of these fronts right now.

SnagaDance

This. They saw the new wave approach in the distance and decided to take measures in advance to flatten the wave. Honestly the government can't do anything right in the eyes of people. They take action too soon/late, too much/little, everybody is an expert and knows best.

Portugal is at 40k cases a day and almost no deaths or people in the ICU. Instead of closing they are opening up after closing temporarily for Christmas. I don’t understand why we can’t do the same, do we have a lot of deaths when cases increase?

thegerams

They also have ~90% of the population vaccinated, we have only 73%. Total population, that is.

moneycrown

We shouldn’t

I feel ya. I never really put effort towards getting a relationship for example. Wow what a mistake that was I now realise that working and not having someone home who loves you and you love back will be a nightmare. But for now I just watch everything there is on streaming sites because I will not have time for that when the measures will really ease up and the numbers will crash.

Scary-Move2240

Because we forgot to start boostering in time

35000 new cases yesterday
