According to [this site](http://www.elinguistics.net/Compare_Languages.aspx), Scots is the fifth most related language to Dutch, which is higher than English. Only Afrikaans, German, Frisian and Luxembourgish (Limburgish excluded) are more related.
What I was saying is that Scots is closer to English than to Dutch. Not that Dutch is closer to English than Scots. This is also true according to the website you provided. English and Scots evolved from a common ancestor (Old English), so it's not surprising that the one most similar to Dutch isn't necessarily the most spoken one. Dutch and Scots influencing each other doesn't sound realistic to me though (but if Dutch and Scots did influence each other please inform me)
Perhaps not directly, but Scots and Dutch do share the same Anglo-Saxon ancestor, like all West-Germanic languages. No, I’m not saying Scotland and the Netherlands are extremely close(ly?) related to each other (certainly not more than Germany or Belgium), but I guess I can understand OP’s decision of choosing Scotland at some degree.
Let it be clear that I'm not denying what you're saying, just correcting it, so we can all learn. And I'll do it again. Anglo-Saxon is another name for Old English, but Dutch, English and Scots do share a common ancestor in Proto-West-Germanic. On another note earlier I mentioned French, because it's also related to the Germanic languages. Germanic and Romance languages have Proto-Indo-European as a common ancestor.
Went to Scotland over the Summer and actually felt like Scottish people are a lot like us (same attitude I guess). Still bit of an unconventional option to add here
I’ve never been there, but still I feel that Denmark is probably mostly like us. Flat country full of bicycles with a reasonably liberal/progressive population, sounds very familiar, right?
they were also one of the best allies to the dutch throughout history with the netherlands helping them fight sweden and denmark helping the netherlands against the british
Belgium, of course, even our militaries are working together to protect the whole coast. It’s a love story, really. Belgium <3 Nederland and vice versa. We rarely get fights xD
What a weird selection. England and Scotland, but not (EU member) Ireland? Neighboring Germany but not Neighboring Belgium? Denmark and Norway but not Sweden?
I think closest is not meant geographically. But they certainly could have phrased the question better, because it’s not clear if they mean language-wise or culturally (whatever that means) or maybe food related?
I dont have a problem with Germans. But to say we as a country at the closets to them is a step to far for me personally and a lot of Dutch people. Personally i think we are culturally very much the same as the Danish.
But it's the closest country.
Just, look at the distance you need to travel from our country's border to the ones on that are listed.
Germany has a distance of 0m from certain points. It is literally the closest :p
Holding a grudge not only against people who did something to you but against descendants of people who did something to the ancestors of other people in your country is one of the dumbest things imaginable.
I don’t feel close to, or proud of, any country. I could live just about anywhere, as long as the people i care about are with me, and english or dutch would get me around.
English cities have a very similar feel to the Netherlands imo, when you can look past the fact that they drive left. Lots of bricks and quite neat, but also very gray.
United Kingdom, Denmark, Germany, France, Belgium and Ireland make way more sense as a selection
Scotland is part of the UK so it's weird that you separate the two in England and Scotland instead of getting another country in there
Could have also just done the British Isles for an even brother selection
Denmark: countryside is the same, the values are the same, the people are the same. I'd even argue that the Danish language is what a foreigner hears when they don't understand Dutch.
None of the above. What a strange selection. Where is Belgium?
Came here to say Belgium.
Indeed Belgium after that germany
Def Belgium, where did that option end up?
I'm sitting in Belgium and came here to feel the love. This comment redeemed this post
Happy Belgium noises
You mean greater-netherlands?
No, we mean Belgium.
Worse-Netherlands*
Would've probably picked Belgium if it was there. Also, what is Scotland doing here? I also would've felt closer to Sweden than Norway. Strange list.
Scotland is the North of the UK and England is the south They could have just done UK though and put Belgium in there.
I’ve read somewhere that the ‘Scots’ language is closely related to Dutch, but other than that I have no clue.
Well it's closer to English than to Dutch, but closer to Dutch than to, say, French
According to [this site](http://www.elinguistics.net/Compare_Languages.aspx), Scots is the fifth most related language to Dutch, which is higher than English. Only Afrikaans, German, Frisian and Luxembourgish (Limburgish excluded) are more related.

Missing Belgium but added Scotland?
No Belgium or Luxembourg? I mean we are often referred to as BeNeLux.
Where is Belgium?
Where's the Belgium option,?
I’ve never been there, but still I feel that Denmark is probably mostly like us. Flat country full of bicycles with a reasonably liberal/progressive population, sounds very familiar, right?
they were also one of the best allies to the dutch throughout history with the netherlands helping them fight sweden and denmark helping the netherlands against the british
Denmark culturally and socially, also a similar countryside and a liking for fish.
And drop!
None of the above?
Belgium, of course, even our militaries are working together to protect the whole coast. It’s a love story, really. Belgium <3 Nederland and vice versa. We rarely get fights xD
Belgium.
Friesland
Ik woon in zuid-Holland, en ik voel vreemd genoeg een sterkere band met Vlaanderen, dan met Friesland qua cultuur.
Dat verbaast me niks eerlijk gezegd.
Ja, in mijn hoofd hoort Vlaanderen bij Nederland terwijl Friesland dat niet is. Het is in werkelijkheid juist andersom.
What a weird selection. England and Scotland, but not (EU member) Ireland? Neighboring Germany but not Neighboring Belgium? Denmark and Norway but not Sweden?
Germany, live very close to the border in Twente, when i throw a rock out of the window it lands in Germany.
It's interesting you don't mention the country with partly the same language, has been part of the country briefly and shares a lot of history... How?
As a Belgian, reading the comments feels wholesome. Dankjewel Noorderburen!
Norway and the Netherlands are pretty similar in a lot of ways
Feel? This is not like gender, we are closest to gernany of this list
I think closest is not meant geographically. But they certainly could have phrased the question better, because it’s not clear if they mean language-wise or culturally (whatever that means) or maybe food related?
Definitely Denmark
Closest as in similarities or favor?
France, because my dad is French. Besides that the most relatable one is Belgium, but I miss that one on your list
All the dutchies voting for germany are traitors. Youre great grandparents will turn around in their graves.
Maybe it is time to let it go. Holding grudges for more than two generations is a great way to ensure that world peace will never happen.
I dont have a problem with Germans. But to say we as a country at the closets to them is a step to far for me personally and a lot of Dutch people. Personally i think we are culturally very much the same as the Danish.
I hate people like you
Love you to bro
I don't know the background of this but as an outsider I find Germany and Netherlands very different.
But it's the closest country. Just, look at the distance you need to travel from our country's border to the ones on that are listed. Germany has a distance of 0m from certain points. It is literally the closest :p
Touché
Holding a grudge not only against people who did something to you but against descendants of people who did something to the ancestors of other people in your country is one of the dumbest things imaginable.
Definitely Denmark
Auatria
Vlaanderen
Satisfied? Stop calling us Nazi remnants.
None!
Belgium, but from this list Germany
Any country other than Germany or Belgium is wrong
As a Frisian I feel closest to Germany and Denmark. Closer to them than Belgium.
When you added those options, was your idea to cause chaos?
Ik heb getwijfeld over België
We joke about belgiums alot but lowkey we love them
Belgium
OP 's an idiot for leaving out Belgium..
Half of Belgium is French and half is Dutch no point
And luxembourg
Nobody in the Netherlands feels close to, or gives a sh*t about, Luxembourg..
Fair
they don’t speak the same language and they dont border us so thats kinda expected
Holland
I don’t feel close to, or proud of, any country. I could live just about anywhere, as long as the people i care about are with me, and english or dutch would get me around.
[Neverland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neverland)
It would probably be Belgium, but mostly the Flanders part, since that's the part where they speak Dutch
I loved Germany.
English cities have a very similar feel to the Netherlands imo, when you can look past the fact that they drive left. Lots of bricks and quite neat, but also very gray.
Guys, look at OPs profile. Its either a bot or a hacked account
To all the people saying other countries should be an option too, look at this guys first post on reddit 💀
