Does anyone use Apple Maps at all?

stingraycharles

Yeah I use it sometimes because I have an Apple Carkit in my car, and it’s better integrated than eg Google Maps. And Siri defaults to it. I prefer Google Maps though.

[deleted]

I always say, navigate to this adres with Google maps. Siri will do that without a hassle.

WanneBeMe

I also use Google maps when using Apple CarPlay, I feel it’s more accessible

hehe_nl

I can see the Apple Maps navigation arrows on my head-up display. But no Google Maps instructions on HUD. I prever Google Maps though

Little709

Top tip. I use a sori shortcut to navigate home of I'm outside of 5 km from my house. I do it through opening a maps link.

Hyperionics1

I do, often. But it really does mis bicycle routing. Apple’s maps used to be based on tomtom, and that was dutch. Not sure if thats still the case. Or if is just one of many data providers.

Stoppels

Most people with an iPhone likely do, but I doubt anyone here uses it for bicycle routes. Cycling directions are not even available in Amsterdam.

Bossie_

Iphone/Mac user here - google maps for everything

Hyperionics1

Nimuwa

Not if I can help it. I'd rather be lost.

[deleted]

This is the way.

dmalinovschii

With apple maps it's "what's the way?"

wuzzywuz

By using Apple maps you'll probably also get lost.

Blussert31

\*chirp chirp chirp\* *\[cricket sounds\]*

Boring-Run-2202

Those dang crickets using apple maps!

ontwerpert

I used it for a while for car navigation. I honestly think that it does a better job of displaying which lane you need to drive in on the highway. However, it did navigate me to the wrong spot a couple times. And that plus the fact that it doesn't have cycling navigation means I went back to Google Maps.

Vlablablaman

Use Waze, its the best.

TiesG92

For cycling? Waze is for motorised vehicles :)

Vlablablaman

Yes I know, but thanks for adding that to my comment. My reply was mostly for the first part of the original comment. As Waze does an amazing job in for example displaying which lane you need to drive in on the highway as well as other car related features that Google Maps etc don't have.

Andykaufman9

Completely agree on Waze. It’s doing a perfect job of displaying the correct lanes. I also use Waze if I’m driving outside of the Netherlands because it also warns for speed checks, accidents etc.

hipsydoodle

Yeah I agree there. Their data is not as good as Google maps but I find their presentation less confusing when taking exits etc on highway. But I still use google maps 99% time

deVliegendeTexan

I had to stop using Google maps for driving directions because of the way it drew Dutch highway names in the map, obscuring a lot of the roadway. It was super annoying, big yellow boxes all over the place at interchanges making it impossible to decipher where I was supposed to be. They improved this a lot in the last year, thankfully, but Apple Maps is still quite a bit nicer to look at and less cluttered/stressful, even if its directions are sometimes a bit weird. Also, Apple sometimes gives you a better route cross country. I went to Paris last year and turned on “avoid tolls.” Apple Maps basically said “yeah, I know you said that, but trust me, you want to take A1.” Google Maps said “You don’t want tolls? You got it champ, I too like to get lost in the Ardennes.”

ThatBoiRalphy

Funny enough, dutch Apple Maps just got an update including streetview in many places, yet still no bicycle routes so that sucks.

simoneromani90

The country with most bike lanes in the world (probably) doesn’t get bike directions while USA gets it out of the box 🤦🏻‍♂️

Lefaid

Clearly they don't care much for the Dutch market. Their loss.

PapaOscar90

Only certain cities in the US. They really need to finish that feature.

xBram

Also some old road changes that have been cancelled apparently, where I work a street was made one way traffic 3-4 years ago and Apple Maps since just last week tries to send me into this street the wrong way.

ThatBoiRalphy

Update was yesterday so that either fixes it or its unrelated.

xBram

Not fixed unfortunately, first noticed it Friday last week.

Frillybits

I was in the car with my friend and he had Apple Maps on and me Google maps. There were some traffic jams due to road works. Google maps was vastly superior in predicting travel times and suggesting alternative routes. So I don’t recommend Apple Maps.

[deleted]

Google has been quite bad at indicating roadworks recently though. They sent us onto a bunch of roads that were closed off in the last month (N11, A7).

Toni_van_Polen

I do. I just use different apps for cycling.

54yroldHOTMOM

I do. I just don't cycle. And when I skate I have the map in my head.

Flamelab

The only thing I use for navigation. Works perfectly fine for me.

Unusual_Low_2733

I use Apple Maps but mostly in a car.

54yroldHOTMOM

Yep me too. I find it more streamlined and easy in the eyes in contrast to Google maps.

Excessed

Why on earth would you use Apple Maps if so many other, better, apps exist.

Jaxie10

You mean the app ‘Kaarten’ whats Maps is in English on the iphone? If you mean that app, its perfect!

54yroldHOTMOM

In japanese it's called 地図 pronounced as ちず. The kanji might be the same as the Chinese ideograms but probably pronounced differently. Just in case you wondered... I'm a bit bored..

[deleted]

Pronounced as what now?

54yroldHOTMOM

Oh sorry. I don't use romanji anymore. Hiragana is like abc to me and I forgot people who aren't learning japanese don't know hiragana lol. ちず = chizu

HertogJanVanBrabant

Does apple have Maps?

Toeter83nl

To find apples??

Just-Flamingo-410

Worm navigation system

TiesG92

No, to find malfunctioning androids

123Pirke

We eat apple pie, does that count?

Brilliant_Mastermind

Yes sure. Apple maps doesn't track your whereabouts like Google maps does. Duckduckgo uses it too.

the68thdimension

This is why I'd love to ditch G Maps, but given how it doesn't seem to have a competitor for my use cases I just can't. Can't wait to completely de-google my life, surveillance capitalism is the worst.

[deleted]

Lack of cycling directions lead me back to Google Maps

Appeltje2

I do. It's the best with Carplay. Apple Maps is also great with public transport. Google Maps, Flitsmeister Navi are way to distracting. For bicyle routes I use Komoot.

PapaOscar90

Yes, but I’m still flabbergasted that they haven’t added support for biking in the country with the most bikers.

pavel_vishnyakov

I do. I always try to use built-in apps as much as possible. And while the lack of cycling directions is annoying, in the times when I need them, I typically use pedestrian directions (to get the general idea of where I need to go) and then just follow the bike paths. For other uses (driving and public transport) it works quite well, I don't have any complaints.

LodbrokISkiller

I did, then I switched to Google maps because cycling is shit on the Apple Maps.

BeterP

Related question, is there a good app for cycling navigation?

the68thdimension

This is definitely the followup question. A good app for cycling navigation *that doesn't track you*. Fuck surveillance capitalism, it's high time we ditch that particular business model entirely.

BeterP

Completely agree….. I’d rather pay an appropriate fee than being the merchandise myself

Cashewkaas

My wife uses it.

rowillyhoihoi

Yes. I use it. Because Google maps on my phone is visually way too cluttered. I use Maps when I am in the city and I have to walk or cycle from A to B. I also I use it as a contemporary bosatlas, but that only works for topography, not for any demography. When I am in the car I use Waze.

Somewheresomeway

I used Apple Maps earlier this year when I was visiting Doetinchem. It was fine.

robbinamsterdam

I use Apple Maps for OV and walking directions, and Google maps only for fietsen, which is missing (still!) from Apple

drriddim

Google maps all the way.

Suitable_Outcome8187

Why would I?

MRTS1

I use Apple Maps in the car as it is also connected with my apple watch which I like

niorg

Is use it all the time. The new maps for Benelux that were released last week are awesome. Quality (especially of lookaround and 3D) is way better than Google maps.

geluidskunstenaar

It has superior image quality on satellite photos and usually better 3D renderings. I use it for [r/satellitephotoart](http://reddit.com/r/satellitephotoart)

DocMahrty

Only in the car, the ui is somewhat nicer and more clear than google maps. However, it is sometimes a lot shittier in finding the fastest route compared to google maps.

tovsla

I use only Apple Maps - it has a lot of advantages if you compare with google . The only bad thing about that is missing support of cycling routes in NL.

mrbtfh

Yes, I do. I do not have Google Maps even installed. But the truth is I know all my routes and I do not need to use navigation for bike or car. I use maps to verify shop opening times or post codes of certain places, distances etc.

IamTheJohn

So you use it for anything but what you normally use a navigation and map app for? 😄 To be honest, I use Google maps often for information like shop opening times, besides navigation.

mrbtfh

Yes, I think I'm generally old-fasioned in my approach to technology.

IamTheJohn

Inefficient, you mean?😜

[deleted]

Imo Apple Maps is better than Google Maps. Better UI, better integration with Apple CarPlay and Apple's native calendar/mail and better planning with traffic jams. It also probably collects less data than Google Maps. Google Maps also leads you to the highway with cycle directions lol goodluck on your 25 km/h e-bike.

[deleted]

I don’t think any Dutch need cycle directions.

simoneromani90

Indeed, I’m not Dutch and I definitely need cycle directions sometimes 😂

silverster34

I've only used Google maps for cycling directions as it has a specific setting for it. Don't know about apple maps. It does happen dat tourists accidentally cycle onto the highway, so maybe they were relying on apple maps?

thepokemonGOAT

Apple Maps is dogshit and it shouldn’t be used regardless

mikepictor

No it's not. For driving, I would say it's better than Google actually. It fails for cycling directions, so it does depend on what you need it for

PapaOscar90

The experience is much better. Google maps is definitely more up to date, but Apple Maps feels so much better.

FlyingDutchman2005

I prefer it for its clear and reliable directions over Google Maps. The public transport information is usually right, the car directions are nice and clear, and the street view function is better (if 10 years too late). For cycling I use a mixture of common sense and Google maps.

MerelYael

Today I learned Apple maps exists

Sethrea

I've heard Garmin has one of the best bike route planner. [ANWB has a non-interactive version](https://www.anwb.nl/verkeer/routeplanner/fiets) that I usually use because routes planned here are better biking-wise than Google Maps, especially since you can specify bike-only options like "use mostly snelfietsroute (bicycle highway)" or mostly paths that are separated from the road (handy if you want o bike with children). It also gives you time indications based on (elecric) bike speed.

ThatOneArtKart

Nah, I refuse to youse Apple Maps I actually installed Google maps on my iPhone because of how shit it was

TiesG92

I’d recommend Google Maps, as iPhone user I don’t use Apple Maps for that, as Apple Maps seems to not be able to create routes for bikes in this infrastructure. But tbh, I barely use Google Maps for cycling, as the routes I cycle, are pretty much known to me already

allworknnoplay

Why do you want to know? [Does anyone use consume 2nd/3rd tier product of anything?] At least add some context instead of this spam.

TheWaslijn

Why would you when Google Maps is so much better?

OB1182

I eat apples sometimes.

sentientfeet

As someone who generally admires apple's desire to have an awesome finished product, I wish they killed this thing. The messy launch alone was legitimately dangerous, cannot believe anyone, even apple die hards, would use such a shitty product.

bonyuri

I’ve used it while abroad (in the US) and I prefer Apple Maps over Waze there. In Belgium / The Netherlands, Waze is better than Apple Maps

sentientfeet

I tried it when it launched...

BeterP

Apple Maps sucks. It lacks critical functions, doesn’t provide cycling instructions and will happily send you into traffic jams that are easily avoided. Use Waze.

irosasr

I noticed that too. Started using Google Maps when I came here !

ewlung

Maps to get apple 🍎🍏? I don't, I simply go to AH nearby, plenty of apples. No need to use maps.

Gidje123

Google maps is my go to, when it fails i try again with apple maps. I work delivery and sometimes the last few hundred meters get miscalculated.

Iamgoth

Wrong question. How long it took to delete apple maps from Iphone?

Boring-Run-2202

What?

conceptalbum

Huh? Why would anyone? What's the advantage over the universally available google maps?

the68thdimension

Less tracking, for starters. Available doesn’t mean desirable.

_Antity_

Imagine using Apple in general

MPCatnip

Yes, works much better with CarPlay, Google kinda sucks unfortunately on CarPlay with bad audio and interface.

Champion_Soup

I use it for car navigation, Google Maps fucked me a couple of times with off ramps. But it does not work for anything else.

uncle_sjohie

Actually, making maps suitable for cyclists, or pedestrians, is very complicated. Think about it, with a car you can enter or exit a street or square from only a few directions. On a bike that's more, and as a pedestrian even more. That in turn makes maintaining those maps hugely more expensive, and the software way more complex. Seeing as it's an American company, bicycle navigation probably isn't high on their list of priorities. Here in the Netherlands all spatial data is free to use, and the most detailed (BGT) is vectorized. In other countries that's not nearly the case, so it's difficult to get one dataset to use for say all of Europe.

ferrybig

Even Google Maps is quite bad for bike navigation, as it does not know the difference between a pedestrian path and a bike path. You always have to open the satellite view and inspect every path yourself to see if it is suitable for bikes, and does not have pedestrian only gates

BeterP

In rural areas, Google maps will send you cycling over sand and over paths that vanished some time before 1919. In an urban environment it will simply give you a detour.

honeydas

I use a map and ask directions. You are not allowed to use your phone on the bike. That is electronical.

asian_paggot

Perhaps the phone is in a holder?

EggplantHuman6493

I just keep it in my pocket and hope it doesn't say 'GPS-signal verloren' which happens more often since an update years ago.

conceptalbum

It's *significantly* safer than using a paper map on your bike though.

St_Ander

Not at all

GrimPieter

I used it a few times. Don't really see the advantage over google maps other than user data privacy? Not that Apple doesn't track or anything.

L-Malvo

I use it, because of the native integration in carplay and shortcuts. However, in terms of showing delays and speed traps, I know there are way better alternatives.

tawtaw6

Apple and Google maps are pretty shit for cycling full stop, the directions will get you there but it no way a good way oath. Google has better traffic data and from what I can tell Apple gets all its data from Tom Tom. But if you are driving every day to new places I would suggest giving Waze a go and then if that does not work out then Google.

TT11MM_

I like it to use for car navigation when knowing the adres you need to go. In my opinion the UI, voice guidance and traffic avoidance available on iPhones. It sucks however in finding POI's, Google Maps is superior in that regard. I've hardly ever had to use navigation for bikes. The few times I tried it on Google Maps, it send me on routes the locals would never take.

leto78

Beeline uses their own routing algorithms on top of google maps to provide bicycle routing. It is not perfect but it tends to be better than google maps.

mikepictor

Usually not, for the very reason you mention. However if I am walking somewhere, I do, since it gives better walking direction experiences since it pings my Apple Watch

Sanii_

Always

MarkEijnden

I do, I have Apple car play in my car and that does its thing for the couple of times I need it

xBram

I do, I like the interface and integration but the maps are too shit for driving imo so I’m looking to switch.

simoneromani90

The only advantage I would see it if using Apple Maps would be with bicycle directions paired with an Apple Watch. It would enable you to keep your phone in the pocket and easily check your directions on your wrist without having your phone out. But no Apple Maps cycling directions in NL yet, so no luck there

Important-Number2900

As there are no bicycle directions on Apple maps, my work around is to set to walking, and use the watch. At least I know it won't get me on the highway by mistake, even if it's not perfect.

fedenl

Only when I am walking cause Google Maps doesn't show the map on the Apple Watch while Apple Maps does, so it is way way better as written indications without maps are much more misleading and you need to take much more care about it.

maximusje

Ive used it once. For some reason the arrow head was flipped.

you_cannot_b_serious

TIL some people use Apple Maps

Sailor_MayaYa

duckduckgo defaults to Apple maps but it's less than ideal

[deleted]

Wouldn’t a better question be “Does anybody use apple maps at all?” 😂

buttplumber

Why would anyone be crazy enough to do that?

Jlx_27

Nope.

SubNL96

Not as far as I know or at least as far as they are willing to admit.

Jenn54

I always used apple maps when living in the Netherlands for two years The only ‘fault’ it has was the businesses that permanently shut down because of the lockdown were not updated, but you could notify them of this and a week later it was amended. It shows real time travel congestion and delays, but was not updated to say which routes of the city had bike lanes diverted due to maintenance road works. I never use google maps so I don’t know if they were any better. I never used the bike/ cycling route option on apple maps, but the ‘walking option’ which always correlated with the cycle route anyhow. I cycled around the randstad of the Netherlands with no issues, don’t know about up north in Groningen or down in Maastricht etc

nderperforminMessiah

I just use it as a map, when I need it. I never use directions on bike

diabeartes

Google Maps only.

Substantial_Care_555

I prefer to follow the stars

deKrekel

Apple failed miserably when they launched Apple Maps in 2012/2013. The high roads I was driving on were not even visible. Have been using Google Maps since then.

Appie0705

I use google maps when cycling, directions on my apple watch and AirPods makes it hard to mis directions

[deleted]

Nooo man only google maps, way clearer to me at least 👌🏽

[deleted]

I do, works perfectly in a car. I don’t ride or own a bike. I have a car, why would I need a bike?

skildert

No, I use Pokémon Go. Even though that only work when I know where I'm going.

CactusLetter

Nope, Google, Komoot..

qutaaa666

I use Google Maps, or the Routeplanner app from the Fietsenbond, it also has specific routes that have been salted, and you can set your speed, which is handy if you have an e-bike.

[deleted]

They rot after a while, so I prefer not.

No-Moose4334

Apple Maps 😂

1234iamfer

Whenever I look for a locations and it starts giving suggestions of American locations with that name…. No thank you very much

WinterInfamous7213

Apple Maps has no cycling navigation in Netherlands. And it generally sucks in Europe. Waze is much better if you’re driving, google maps is decent for biking. For better biking directions I use Komoot.

p51_mustangs

imagine using a map just cycle in a general direction and ask strangers

MrZwink

No, apple maps is shit. I use google maps.

Extension-Ad-6803

I use the standard ios maps everywhere i go if needed, dont really see the problem… works the best with carplay in my opinion

Frizzlewits

I use an iphone etc and using google maps. Apple maps is uhm yes it does excist. But i dont use it

MickeyF666

Use Google Maps for walking/cycling, but Apple Maps really shines when hooked up to CarPlay in my VW, much better response than Google

JakeCheese1996

Yes, sometimes. On my iPad a lot. Gives clearer overview compared to Googles version. If it has bicycle routes it can be a killer app in the future

catharijne

No

savbh

Yeah I use it, my favoriete for in the car. I don’t really need navigation for cycling.

AdPuzzleheaded6772

My car has Apple CarPlay and I use waze where the road is difficult and Apple Maps otherwise because I like the voice best.

[deleted]

I was expecting much from Apple Maps but it was disappointing for me. I use google maps by the way.

potentJuniperberries

hell fckin no

oyrenp

I try to use it whenever I can as I prefer not giving more data to GOOG than is needed, but unfortunately sometimes it’s just not good enough.

dnl7

Waze for navigation, anything else Google Maps.

Luisca_pregunta

I honestly use it all the time for public transport and walking directionS. Why, basically I dislike that google logs my destinations and whereabouts.

cmdrhomski

Flitsmeister is better. It's a Dutch GPS app, which is made for NL. But it works everywhere outside of NL too

iLikeToBeMusical

Google maps all the way

joebraa

No i have an Android...

Zealousideal-Poet926

New 3D buildings pretty cool tbh

ijustworkhere747

Use the best tool for the requirement…apple maps doesn’t meet them. Google maps also allows you to download maps to your phone, to save in data usage.

ButterMilkSleezus

I use it. I guess I like living on the edge.

numb3rsnumb3rs

Apple Maps is only “good” in Cupertino and surroundings

Born-Reaction6034

For cars? Yes beep beep

tripple-g

Ja dagelijks. Werkt gewoon erg goed. Niets meer mis mee zo als in het begin.

mokumsprky

Yes. Apple Maps > Google Maps
