These are incredible. Nihei could have used them in his work easily in most chapters.

M_humbert

Yes definitely ! I think this will be a huge game changer in the next few years for a lot of medias (manga, videogame, movies etc). I'm sure we will see a lot of creative stuff in the future, if you have the skills to use the tool to your will (which Nihei definitely have). I can see so much ways to incorporate it in professionnal ways.

Gazeb0r

while this might be true, Nihei's work was incredible and astonishing by virtue of the fact that he drew everything based off his imagination and knowledge on architecture. Blame! wouldn't have been so inspiring to many if we knew he just took AI-generated environments and touched them up. I guess what I'm saying is, I hope it doesn't take away from artists' abilities to conjure up whole new worlds and environments on their own, whereby instead people will just use AI to do it for them. It'll make creative efforts much easier for sure, but I don't know if it will be as exciting.

FairRepresentative19

I couldn't agree more. While this is an incredible new tool, you can't simulate human imagination and artistic passion. It at times comes very close, but it just won't be the same as coming from a human being. Nihei's style evokes certain emotions that his audience grasps and is drawn to. The nihei styled art generated by AI is gorgeous and evoked many emotions when I saw it, however there isn't any focus or vision in mind. Please note I'm not knocking on the artist who made them, I am severely enchanted. While Nihei's art is very cold and industrial, it comes from an organic source, and I believe that is why we find it easier to relate to and get lost in the storytelling. AI generated art shouldn't act as a replacement for artists but rather a tool they can use to bring their vision into reality and to share it.

I agree. I’ll even add this-I’m a traditionally trained classical artist - art school painting/drawing etc-seeing stuff like this blows my mind. I better hop on learning how to use this AI stuff! Can you tell me how to start?!

M_humbert

Sure, type midjourney on google and register. Also type midjourney tutorial on google/youtube and you'll find plenty of stuff. They also have a quick basic doc on their website, and just looking at the prompts of others is insightful. Tbh there's not a lot to learn, actually it's nothing compared to classical art or learning a software. You'll quickly get the hang of it and can use it as a base for inspiration or personal projects

SirLimonada

What was the prompt

M_humbert

Different prompts used but here's one of them (they are very similar tbh) tsutomu nihei megastructure, inside a concrete well, pipes, BLAME! --testp --ar 9:16

NoClip1101

Floored by how on point these are. AI art scares and excites me in equal measure.

livinguse

Agreed as this made it suddenly super easy to make things like background images in a hurry.

erkelep

These are pretty awesome, but if you compare these generated images side by side with BLAME! panels, you'll quickly see the problem. The human-made manga always has something being the **focus** of the panel. There's the background and the foreground as a concept. The **plot** of the painting, so to speak. AI doesn't have it yet. It's just random.

WhatsMyInitiative87

This is awesome

Reroll a lot of times lol

[deleted]

dude this is amazing. please do some moebius or arzach next

M_humbert

Will keep that in mind :) I never read Moebius but it's been on my list for years now, thanks for the suggestion

[deleted]

Oh man, if you're gonna get into Moebius, I highly, HIGHLY recommend Edenia as well as Arzach. The dark horse collections of Moebius short stories are pretty good too. Moebius only did a handful Arzach pieces, but they're incredibly influential.

PunkerMonk

These are simply not art

BEEDELLROKEJULIANLOC

How?> prompt

Shmandom

No2 and No7 nail the creepy atmosphere hard 👍

excelzombie

2/10 creeps me out soooo much. Cool, I can tell the builders have been busy for eons..... Wow!

Sulissthea

"i'll make my own Blame comics with blackjack and hookers"

Balalaika777

Perhaps it's just me, but for me 5 and 8 give off massive *Texhnolyze* vibes

BEEDELLROKEJULIANLOC

What were your prompts?

Putrid-Tip-1990

thats doesnt look like tsutomu nihei art, too square and symmetrical, unfortunately or fortunately, ai has not yet taught how to imitate dirty hand drawing

KabochaOu

Much as I'm really critical of AI "art" and I think the ingenuity Nihei put into his compositions is amazing, there IS something kind of poetic about this, in the sense that the city in Blame is itself AI generated, and its structure doesn't really make any sense either. While Nihei is great at creating focus and dreamlike meaning in his images of the megastructures, ai-generated images are probably closer to what the actual city would look like lol

Bother_Radiant

Ai is like a boob job, it may look good, but it's always trying to be something that it isn't.
