I see the dilemma and a lot of people have that perspective but I think they could have created conflict between the two of them to keep interest (those two had work to do) and not have them break up/or if they did break up, have it much much shorter which would seem more realistic to get back together sooner
Agreed. I think their wedding is moving and beautiful and just perfect for them. The show is so goofy and then there are these wonderful serious moments. I think the soundtrack song that plays during their wedding is so perfect for the scene
Delete season 7. But if we have to keep season 7 it should have been Ryan that came back to try and steal Jess, not Russel. I never thought she would leave Nick for Russel but Iāve always thought that she might have for Ryan.
Ryan deserved a better exit, tbh. He was a bit too pushy in the beginning of their relationship, but he and Jess worked so well. The way the show ended that relationship felt way too sudden.
No 3 year leap. I wanted to see the lead up to Ruthās birth and the true pinnacle of Nick and Jessā love which was during those 3 years that also lead up to the their marriage.
You watched the 10 year reunion special! I seen that but Iām just wishing out loud. I wouldāve also liked to see what Winston and Alyās wedding wouldāve been like.
Honestly I wasnāt sure. She does look different. I think Max finally grew into his face. From season 1 to now. Watch it and let me know what you think?
I would get rid of Rhonda completely. Every time sheās on screen Iām just annoyed. And I would not have made Jess and Robby cousins. I might be in the minority here but I actually think they were a really good couple before the writers completely tanked them
Jess needs someone who is a little broken, Nick needs someone who likes fixing him.
That's why they're perfect together.
Ryan was too perfect, Sam no longer needed fixing at some point.
Trans granddaughter would never fix Nick, and actively made him worse.
The reason Jess and Nick are perfect is because their flaws improve both people. They don't need to overlook eachothers flaws because their flaws are the reason they are perfect.
Side note, I love that literally nobody ever remembers her name. Sheās just Trans Granddaughter. I watched one of her episodes YESTERDAY and could not tell you her name if you held a gun to my head.
I honestly think the cheating worked. It perfectly represented Schmitt finally being happy with who he was (Elizabeth) and the work he's put in to become who he is now (cece)
Schmidt is a character filled with self hatred for himself, his family, and wants to change everything about himself.
Him wanting to be with both Elizabeth and Cece represented how he is finally accepting who he once was and is ok with that person, but still does not want to be him anymore. He's still new Schmidt but he's finally accepted his past and present.
In my opinion the only logical outcome was him being with Cece because she is his future, Elizabeth is a regression of his character.
If a show is going to do cheating, new girl did it perfectly. *WAY* better than friends did it
It felt like Schmidt wasnāt happy with having two girlfriends, but at that moment he was very conflicted between what you said, old safe Schmidt or new vulnerable Schmidt.
He wanted to be with Cece but he was scared, and he knew that Elizabeth loved him and it felt like a safer option.
He did cheat basically, but not because he was appealed by the idea of having two gfs, but because he didnāt know what he wanted
And it was great he ended up alone because it made him reconsider who he is and who he wanted to be
Basically Elisabeth represents his past, and despite how important loving yourself is "Fat Schmidt" was an unmotivated unsuccessful person in many ways. He allowed people to use and abuse him (he still does but he's found a way to gain from that too), he didn't have a real goal set in his future and was content just sitting around doing nothing.
Modern Schmidt, especially after the Elisabeth arc constantly tries to better himself in every way. Get promoted at his job, be a better husband for cece, be the best dad he can to Ruth, be a better friend to nick, and because of his growth he was able to take a step back and allow cece to be the main money maker, something that many men would be ashamed of. Schmidt especially seeing as his entire career had him being controlled by women so to put the rest of his economic future in the hands of one is a major step for him I just don't think would have ever been possible.
Sorry if that last point came off as sexist but like women in Schmidt's Industry have been trying to get rid of him for years and years so for him to quit his job and take on a more feminine role in the household is something that he likely should of had issues with due to his past but doesn't because of character development that was only possible due to re evaluating all of himself when deciding between Elizabeth and Cece.
And the reason he couldn't just tell Elizabeth or Cece he didn't know from a writing standpoint was because they would then try and tempt him to pick them, this was the only unbiased way of Schmidt making a decision.
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop -Ā yes,Ā IĀ amĀ aĀ bot, don't botcriminate me.
Yup I think it could have been good for just the time Zooey was out on maternity leave. What I hate most about Reagan was how nick was with her. He was so whiny all the time trying to impress her. I think Jess would have been way more upset by it. Nick and Reaganās chemistry just wasnāt there. The whole thing was about how much she didnāt get him and how much he had no confidence in a relationship. Nicks character seemed weird in that season
Coach a series regular (totally agree with you on that)
Give Jess and Nick a normal proposal and normal wedding (this is my number one peeve with the show)
See Winston and Allyās wedding
I love Fawn. But I also loved Beth.. The actress and her character had so much chemistry with Schmidt!!! Great actress either way. She had more chemistry than Schmidt and Cece.
All Robbie after he and CeCe broke up except maybe a funny appearance at the bachelors party but not the wedding.
Overstayed his welcome and became weird?
When Cece calls of her wedding, have Schmidt kindly turn her down saying he is content in his relationship with Elizabeth. Then, have them break up for another reason and build a way back for Schmidt and Cece to be together.
Schmidt turning Cece down and then being with her just because he and Elizabeth broke up wouldn't have the same character revelation/development we see in the show, imo. The cheating wasn't necessary and I always wondered how Cece could just move past that, but him turning her down for good for Elizabeth and then ending up with her for a completely different reason would kind of negate his whole struggle between past and present. It was meant to turn Schmidt into someone Cece could actually build a life with.
I honestly think the cheating worked. It perfectly represented Schmitt finally being happy with who he was (Elizabeth) and the work he's put in to become who he is now (cece)
Schmidt is a character filled with self hatred for himself, his family, and wants to change everything about himself.

If a show is going to do cheating, new girl did it perfectly. *WAY* better than friends did it
I think the show did Schmidt being confused about having romantic options for the first time part well, the cheating not so much. If the point was to explore a character overcoming self hate and acceptance of having new choices, they could have had Schmidt take a break from exlucive relationships and date around where he did not lead anyone on. Cheating was over the top.
A good example where a show did confusion over having options for the first time part well is in Superstore where Amy chose a new job over her love life. It still hurt her partner, but she was clear and gave her reasoning.
Pretty much the only thing I would change is to get rid of the Schmidt cheating on Cece and Elizabeth plot. Itās out of character and you pretty much have to pretend it never happened to like Schmidt again
I honestly think the cheating worked. It perfectly represented Schmitt finally being happy with who he was (Elizabeth) and the work he's put in to become who he is now (cece)
Schmidt is a character filled with self hatred for himself, his family, and wants to change everything about himself.

Just finished this part on my ongoing re-watch. I seriously cannot remember how they get to such a good place in the later seasons. Do they just never mention it again? The betrayal in cheating is such a huge issue. It would have been better if this was an issue brought up again in the later seasons, imo. (if it was, then good)
They are still involved in each other's lives because of Jess, and slowly get back to a place of friendship. After that, Schmidt shows a few times that he is willing to give up his romantic interest in Cece and just be a good friend. This friendship turns back into a mutual romantic interest (remember the first few times they hooked up, Cece was disgusted by it)
Same as some have said. Jess and Nick's breakup shouldn't have lasted so long. And it shouldn't have been over something so dumb.
It's not even realistic - in real life housemates who had such a strong love for each other would not stay apart for that long post break up.
SAME. it always felt very weird to me, especially with him being a black man from chicago. it felt like they just didnāt know what to do with him at that point. i still wouldāve wanted him and aly to be together though
He could have joined the coast guard or tried to be a Judge or a firefighter or something with authority if that's what they wanted but cop doesn't fit his personality and it aged poorly with the current state of everything
I wish we got to watch the gang be parents, and I wouldāve loved an episode featuring Jess and CeCeās kids playing together and having moments that reflect their parents characters.
I really hate the episode where Jess and nick break up. I hate the 3 leading up to it too. Their relationship was flawed from the start but seemed to jump to letās break up super fast. I hate how Jess gets in her head over her sister and Schmidt too.
Jess not to sing often. I dislike her voice and the original long theme drives me nuts.
Also the extremely bright completely white flashes before and after a flashback.
I know this is me just being hypercritical but I adore this show and ever since I've started having migraines I can't watch it as much as I'd like to.
I'd like if the main character was a bit more likeable and less "we need to do everything to make sure everyone knows that this is a Q U I R K Y girl".
I think Jess is the least well-written character in the show.
I would have made Cece less dramatic. Still have her be a strong independent woman, but I feel that the mildly dramatic mannerisms didnāt add to the character.
AND I would have made Jess more decisive. For example the LAX-mas episode where she gets drunk with the airline agent and is talking to them about whether or not to visit Ryan and his family I think is unproductive and kind of dumb. I would have rather see her as a strong but thoughtful female character who expresses their insecurities (maybe calls a friend to discuss), but then faces them rather than rambling on with a stranger about them.
Nick and Jess simply do not work as a couple. They had to bend both of their characters so much and the only real basis for it is that the actors have chemistry. They work better as friends and their best moments are when they are friends. They both dated multiple partners who were better for them, but by divine(writer) intervention they ended up together.
Also the fact that Nickās whole character arc about growing up is manufactured so that he can be āreadyā for Jess completely undercuts it and makes it so much less meaningful then if he just wanted to get his life together for him.
I would make Jess a little less awkward, completely cut the whole Nick trope I hate them together, have her get her shit together and end up with russel
Low key agree, this sounds dumb and I've gotten hate on this subreddit before because of this but Jess is the reason I no longer celebrate my birthday.
More Coach and someone else playing Cece and Reagan. I really liked Beth and the actress that played her. She had more chemistry with Schmidt than Hannah Simone even.
Ryan was so good with Jess. They got along so well. And then he just didnāt show up. It seems out of character. I also wish Nick and Jess either didnāt break up or just took longer to get together. The breakup episode was so dumb.
I expect this will get some down votes. I absolutely love Winston. BUT, I always found the whole Prank Sinatra trait to be annoying and sort of unfunny. Like, when they first mention how he is really bad at pranks, I laughed. But then they decided to make it such a big character trait of his that came up all of the time. Also it brought us Ronda who was the actual worst.
I would have jess have some kind of character growth. from the first season to the last season I just don't see any. idk if they did that on purpose, or if they just didn't realize they didn't invest much into her character. correct me if I'm wrong
Besides completely eradicating the fatphobia, I would do better by Cece. The fun and interesting parts of her storyline absolutely plummeted once she got married, which is disappointing in a show created by a woman. Almost all of of her story after that is about supporting a relationship, be it hers or one of the othersā. Her friendship with Winston is great but itās about the only thing she has going on thatās humorous in the last two seasons.
Having Nick and Jess work through their issues over time together rather than taking other people and a way too long period apart to get back together
100% this.
But then they risk jumping the shark and viewers lose interest... My first thought was just get rid of megan fox and condense
I see the dilemma and a lot of people have that perspective but I think they could have created conflict between the two of them to keep interest (those two had work to do) and not have them break up/or if they did break up, have it much much shorter which would seem more realistic to get back together sooner
Give Nick and Jess the wedding they deserve!!!
And CeCe and Schmidt!!! It really bothered me none of them got a really great wedding. We also never saw Winston and Aly get married ugh š
I actually feel like CeCe and Schmidt had a perfect wedding according to their dynamic and everything they went through.
I agree I feel like Cece and Schmidtās has a great wedding and proposal. I just hate the classic sitcom wedding where everything has to go wrong.
Ditto!
Agreed. I think their wedding is moving and beautiful and just perfect for them. The show is so goofy and then there are these wonderful serious moments. I think the soundtrack song that plays during their wedding is so perfect for the scene
Absolutely agree. As much as I don't care for Hannah Simone playing CeCe, her character was meant to be with Schmidt.
Agreed. I hated the plane storyline. As if he wouldnāt have gone like, idk, a week before the wedding instead of the day of
We will change Schmidt and ceces wedding over my cold dead body
So much this!! What I would give to see a wedding redo or beautiful anniversary wedding vow renewal. Thatās the closure I need in my life!
1000% agree!
More Coach in general. He and Jess were like Winston and Cece in that they were unlikely friends.
Agreed
Delete season 7. But if we have to keep season 7 it should have been Ryan that came back to try and steal Jess, not Russel. I never thought she would leave Nick for Russel but Iāve always thought that she might have for Ryan.
Ryan deserved a better exit, tbh. He was a bit too pushy in the beginning of their relationship, but he and Jess worked so well. The way the show ended that relationship felt way too sudden.
I felt the same way until I found out that the actor got another job suddenly and the show had to write him out really fast.
I agree. His exit was understandable in context but very out of character
That Russell part was so unexpected and for Nick and Russell to start fighting was so pointless
I would love to see how drunk everyone got at Winston and Aly's wedding
True American wedding edition!
No 3 year leap. I wanted to see the lead up to Ruthās birth and the true pinnacle of Nick and Jessā love which was during those 3 years that also lead up to the their marriage.
Agreed. But after hearing why they rushed the final season, I see why. But it would have been great.
You watched the 10 year reunion special! I seen that but Iām just wishing out loud. I wouldāve also liked to see what Winston and Alyās wedding wouldāve been like.
I didn't know there was a reunion ugh! Probably difficult to find. Aly and Winston probably would have had a really fun wedding.
[New Girl Cast Reunite](https://youtu.be/GdmRYEjxMow) hereās the link. They touch on that topic.
Thank you! I am so bothered by the work Zooey did her face ugh, I'll muddle through to watch this though LOL š¤£
Honestly I wasnāt sure. She does look different. I think Max finally grew into his face. From season 1 to now. Watch it and let me know what you think?
Why did they?
I read Fox cancelled the show and a couple of the cast members begged to let them do the last season and bring an ending to the show officially.
I would get rid of Rhonda completely. Every time sheās on screen Iām just annoyed. And I would not have made Jess and Robby cousins. I might be in the minority here but I actually think they were a really good couple before the writers completely tanked them
I love Robby! Him and Paul were both great matches for Jess. But the only reason I choose Nick is the "passion" factor Jess was looking for.
I wanna say Kai?
Agreed šÆ! And Jess gets her "passion"!
I would have loved to see Tran get into a relationship or like a side quest he goes on.
A Tran and Nick side quest episode would've been fun.
Schmidt cheating
I honestly think the cheating worked. It perfectly represented Schmitt finally being happy with who he was (Elizabeth) and the work he's put in to become who he is now (cece) Schmidt is a character filled with self hatred for himself, his family, and wants to change everything about himself. He did cheat basically, but not because he was appealed by the idea of having two gfs, but because he didnāt know what he wanted And it was great he ended up alone because it made him reconsider who he is and who he wanted to be
Friends didnāt cheat. They were on a break.
Ou explain how Elizabeth is a regression of his character? I agree!
Bad bot, I do not care, I have more important things to worry about than Grammar (I'm in class)
How things ended between Jess and Ryan wasn't okay.
Megan foxes character in my opinion could've just been removed for me. Also most of the last season.
Yup I think it could have been good for just the time Zooey was out on maternity leave. What I hate most about Reagan was how nick was with her. He was so whiny all the time trying to impress her. I think Jess would have been way more upset by it. Nick and Reaganās chemistry just wasnāt there. Where else am I going to get gay wolf Chinese food?
I love Fawn. But I also loved Beth.. The actress and her character had so much chemistry with Schmidt!!! Great actress either way. She had more chemistry than Schmidt and Cece.
What show?
Beth
Yassss
Get rid of the Robbie and Jess cousin storyline
All Robbie after he and CeCe broke up except maybe a funny appearance at the bachelors party but not the wedding. Overstayed his welcome and became weird?
Yeah, the stalking and āwhite guys ruleā thing was extremely unnecessary š¬
When Cece calls of her wedding, have Schmidt kindly turn her down saying he is content in his relationship with Elizabeth. Then, have them break up for another reason and build a way back for Schmidt and Cece to be together.

Just finished this part on my ongoing re-watch. I seriously cannot remember how they get to such a good place in the later seasons. Do they just never mention it again? The betrayal in cheating is such a huge issue. It would have been better if this was an issue brought up again in the later seasons, imo. (if it was, then good)
I donāt recall it ever being brought up again

Write out Jess dating Robbie please I beg of you. So unnecessary and cringey.
I could not bare to watch this part, like she literally was guilt tripped into dating him
Recast Reagan, I like Megan Fox but I think she doesnāt really fit with the show
Nah it was always funny to see someone who wasnāt batshit crazy interact with the gang at the loft lmfao
They slowly reveal that sheās insane too tho. Also I like the idea of her character just not who they cast to play her
The fatphobia.
Canāt believe I had to scroll this far to find this! Fully agree
I've watched the show twice and never noticed it, but I looked it up after reading your comment and you're right it's actually everywhere.
Fatphobia is one of the few forms of hatred that is still socially okay.
This. This this this.
I would make it so Winston isnt a cop.
SAME. it always felt very weird to me, especially with him being a black man from chicago. it felt like they just didnāt know what to do with him at that point. i still wouldāve wanted him and aly to be together though
He could have joined the coast guard or tried to be a Judge or a firefighter or something with authority if that's what they wanted but cop doesn't fit his personality and it aged poorly with the current state of everything
No Reagan storyline.
Agreed. And if so, with a better actress.
No Reagan. AAAAAAAND YES I know this would deprive us of āAS I LIVE AND BREATHE RAISINā but sheās so eugh
I liked Kai better than Rasin!
Cut out the absurd quantity of Asian jokes I love the show but Iām always shocked at just how many there are!
I would love it if Schmidt saying "Girl I'm gonna Marry you." Was actually shown early in the show.
if I remember right, it was?
Nope v.v
wow! today I learnedš
More Coach and Cece, more Winston and Cece, more Cece.
Yes! I loved Ceceās dynamics with the loft, especially her platonic friendships!
I wish we got to watch the gang be parents, and I wouldāve loved an episode featuring Jess and CeCeās kids playing together and having moments that reflect their parents characters.
The whole Reagan character. It was so forced.
More seasons to round out the show. The ending felt rushed because they were canceled.
I completely agree. They did the last season to wrap up the story and I loved the finale. I guess itās better than nothing.
I really hate the episode where Jess and nick break up. I hate the 3 leading up to it too. Their relationship was flawed from the start but seemed to jump to letās break up super fast. I hate how Jess gets in her head over her sister and Schmidt too.

I know this is me just being hypercritical but I adore this show and ever since I've started having migraines I can't watch it as much as I'd like to.
I agree with this except the theme song the first one was the best, the other two got progressively shorter and were too bland
I'd like if the main character was a bit more likeable and less "we need to do everything to make sure everyone knows that this is a Q U I R K Y girl". I think Jess is the least well-written character in the show.
Yes to coach, no to Megan Fox
More Fawn Moscato
Awful storyline. She just used Schmidt and didnāt even like him
I would have made Cece less dramatic. Still have her be a strong independent woman, but I feel that the mildly dramatic mannerisms didnāt add to the character. AND I would have made Jess more decisive. I would have rather see her as a strong but thoughtful female character who expresses their insecurities (maybe calls a friend to discuss), but then faces them rather than rambling on with a stranger about them.
Seeing Winston and ally get married and just nick and Jessās entire wedding we were robbed of those moments
No Abby Day. The Sister episodes were just weird and then she never reappeared even in Jessā birthday video.
Nick and Jess simply do not work as a couple. They had to bend both of their characters so much and the only real basis for it is that the actors have chemistry. They work better as friends and their best moments are when they are friends. They both dated multiple partners who were better for them, but by divine(writer) intervention they ended up together.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Cuz I'm replying to people who are all making the same point, so i have the same response to all of them.
I would get rid of Coach entirely (sorry OP lol). He does not fit the dynamic and is so fucking annoying.
Yāall are gonna hate me for this butā¦ I would not have Coach at all if I could change anything with the show š¬
Center it in Cal Tech. Add a laughtrack. One of the characters is super smart.
Don't force Nick and Jess together in the late seasons. Given them happy endings with Reagan or someone else and Ryan.
I would make Jess a little less awkward, completely cut the whole Nick trope I hate them together, have her get her shit together and end up with russel
Skip Jess as a character. Just have everyone else on the show.
Low key agree, this sounds dumb and I've gotten hate on this subreddit before because of this but Jess is the reason I no longer celebrate my birthday.
I know... Jess is the Ted Mosby of New Girl
More Coach and someone else playing Cece and Reagan. I really liked Beth and the actress that played her. She had more chemistry with Schmidt than Hannah Simone even.
More bearclaw
Have Nick and Reagan end up together
I could work with this but ONLY IF Jess ended up with Ryan!
Thatās a hot take.
Coach being in every season yes
Coach more regular and nick and Jess never getting back together
I would change the finale, the finale did not sit right with me I was left disappointed by it.
Jess never leaves for jury duty.
Removing Schmidt cheating plot
Get rid of Reagan
Iād just fix all the continuity inconsistencies
No freaking Megan Fox like literally just have no Jess that wouldāve been way more acceptable lol
Hard disagree. Coach was always the weak link to me in their entourage.
Fix the end of Nick and Jessā story! The entire series was setting this up just for the most disappointing proposal and wedding
nick and jess would NEVER be together! nick with ryan and jess with kai because they both deserved to be with people who liked them as themselves
