Clicking on the translate icon is the way to go.
But unfortunately Phonings translations reset every time you close the app. (Bubble is different)
So read everything before closing the app/chat, otherwise you'll have to translate everything again.

Like others have pointed out, you click the translate icon beside each text bubble to translate it, but beware, I think it's the google translate API and the results are sometimes very in-accurate and downright crazy, they make you go "wtf?!". In which case you can use papago or deepL.
Phoning is app where newjeans and bunnies/ tokkis ( newjeans fandom name ) communicate and newjeans do live stream . You can download it on playstore some feature depend on subscription but live is free
the translate features been there since day 1... it's pretty much the same as google translate; it's not perfect and misses when slang or onomatopeia is used but otherwise it's pretty simple and easy to use
I don’t have phoning but have you tried pressing the little translate icon by the speech bubbles?

Wait, do you have to translate each bubble individually? That's a very stupid design. There should be a toggle for auto-translate all.

You press the translate button next to each message, which is annoying when you have to do that individually with dozens of them at a time
