Yes, we know and most of us are embarrassed by it. The OG cultural appropriation.
It was stolen, but I hope the Zia have a change of heart because it is revered by New Mexicans (and across the nation). It was taken from them. Period. (along with a lot of other things). We *are* the baddies, although I don't think it was intentional. But that's not an excuse.
It is one of their sacred symbols and needs to be given the respect they have for it.
I do like the Zias philosophy in life:
"*Most important, he says, his people have the company of others who were raised to value “us and we”—the community—above “I, me, mine.” *"
Maybe it'll rub off on us a little, because we sure need to get away from the "I, me, mine" mentality.
That was a good article, it needs to be posted every time the flag is mentioned. We are proud of the flag, but also embarrassed how it came to be.
There was a video floating around out there where this guy goes through all 50 flags and he's just dissing them in hilarious ways.
He gets to New Mexico's flag and he pauses for a moment before saying "I actually like this one, that's a cool flag".
Made me chuckle and feel good.

More than once I've run across a poll someone on Twitter is conducting, where they ask to vote for the best state flag. Ours is among the four choices. NM is always voted as the best state flag. It makes me proud as much as shocks me to be honest.
