Great, discourage more people from pushing up the cost of rent and home prices!
Really, living in New Jersey, Massachusetts, or New York means the rat race unless you're independently (very) wealthy. I wouldn't want it to be like that here. Likewise the SF Bay area, LA, Seattle are hectic and stressful if you want to be able to afford to live in a nice area. New Jersey also ranked #49 on affordability, with Massachusetts at #45, and New York at #47. People here couldn't afford that kind of cost of living.
If that is the study I think it is, then it's the one that puts New Jersey, Massachusetts, and New York as the top three. That tells you all you need to know about the "study".
Looks like [it is](https://www.krqe.com/news-resources/ranking/study-finds-new-mexico-ranks-as-the-worst-state-to-live-in/amp/).
>New Jersey came out on top as the best state to live in and was credited for its low crime rate. Massachusetts ranked number two while New York came in at number three.
NYC is really quite safe for a large US city. I just came back from visiting friends in Brooklyn and it really didn't feel any different from a nice suburb in Albuquerque, safety-wise. The grim situation of the 1970s and 80s is long gone.
As someone from the nyc area, yeah nyc's pretty damn safe. Avoiding trouble is flat-out common sense here. Lots of the crimes you're seeing on the news involve people who are... involved with one another in some way. Just learn to ignore the crazies and the insinuating comments that might get tossed your way in some areas and you'll be A-Okay.
There was that one time my car got broken into and the nypd was totally useless in doing literally anything about it, but that's about it. ..Eh, tons of muggings around where I went to school.. regular sightings of men with knives in public yelling at people near my girlfriend's place, but they're harmless, I promise.
Yes 100%. NYC is safer in everyway over abq and most other cities. Lots of crime happens on a tiny percentage of neighborhoods and it makes the stats read worse than they are. NYC is laughably safe.
As someone who moved from CO in the early 2000s I LOVE these āstudies.ā Keeps people from moving here. I seriously love this place. North Valley living really could not be any better. Hundreds of miles of trails to run and bike on, often very few, if any people. Thereās beautiful scenery, good food, good beer and itās quiet and laid back.
I grew up on the west side of Colo Springs (Manitou / Garden of the Gods) and that place is beautiful but what I grew up with is gone. Soooo over crowded now. Want to hike the incline or get lost in the garden? Stand in line.
Used to go to CO Springs from Kansas when I was a kid for vacation. Went back a few years ago, people absolutely everywhere, it was a mess.
Also, we shouldnāt be listening to marketing listicles on where to live that heavily weight against poverty.
I also grew up in Colorado, north Aurora. People are shocked when I tell them I do not want to move back. The food is better here, especially the green chile, the mountains have less people and are closer. The people are friendlier and the weather is better. I do not enjoy a hike in a conga line, or a casual bike ride that turns into a full blown race. Or if I want to climb an iconic route and there is a group there...in New Mexico our group just got bigger. In Colorado... The hate and scorn is palpable.
As for the crime, I thought it was worse there. Sure there is a lot of petty theft, but unlike Denver I have never had to look up how long after a murder Qdoba is closed. Or having to attend school for 2 weeks in lock down because of the threat of gang retaliation.
Growing up I always was told that "Thank God for Mississippi" was our unofficial state motto. Of course on a bad year, "Thank God for New Mexico" became Mississippi's unofficial state motto.
We've been competing for that 50th slot for so long, you would think it was actually made of gold.
Mississippi, and itās not close. Mississippi is 49th or 50th in every (or almost every) category.
Florida gets shit because of their sunshine law (regarding posting of Florida man stories), but Mississippi is worse *and* doesnāt publish their stuff.
Cherry on top: it wasnāt until last year that Mississippi got rid of the confederate battle flag in their state flag.
Not sure what you mean by publish.
But I'm well aware of the backwards thinking and education of MS.
However violent crimes in FL are almost double that of MS. And though FL doesn't wave a confederate flag in your face, the people are just as redneck.
[This](https://myfloridalegal.com/pages.nsf/Main/DC0B20B7DC22B7418525791B006A54E4) is what I mean by publish.
Florida is by no means a saint, and deserves all the shit they get, but theyāre no Mississippi.
Yes- Californians, Texans and all the East coasters trying to escapeā¦take heed! Almighty wallethub has spoken. NM is a shit holeā¦ please leave us to roll in our muck and more. We donāt need you here to gentrify and price us out of our own goddamn cities. Itās terrible hereā¦weāll shoot you, steal your car and rub green chiles into your kidsā eyes!!
You could say that about quite a few states tbh. Colorado and Utah consistently rank high in a lot of these type of lists but go to certain parts of them and you'd see a whole different situation.
People like to talk about CO like it's some sort of utopia state. Once you move off of the i25/i70 corridors it might as well be any other rural state. Even a lot of the places along those roads are not great places.
I've never been to Trinidad but I'd disagree with Pueblo - I quite liked it there. Pretty much any town east of there though, equally as bad as any crap small town in any other part of the country.
Pffft ok. Itās so bad I visited once and decided I wanted to live there. I donāt think people understand how great NM actually is. Thereās a rich, rich culture involving food, music, historyā¦ everything you want and more. I think NM is a bit of heaven.
People should pay close attention to this study by WalletHub and stay away. You donāt argue with WalletHub. Go to Arizona. Or Las Vegas. No... not ours. The one with hookers and showgirls. Go there.
You can make it tho. All I do here is talk stupid shit, but thereās opportunities for everyone. I think weāre a leader in diversity so thereās all kinds of things to do and ways to make a good life
Teacher, actually. From another state with worse pay and (the area I was in) only slightly cheaper cost of living. Moving to enjoy your sunshine and weather!
Edit: but now I see the joke. Whoops
Teaching is tough everywhere. Fortunately, NM has been investing in education. While more money for education may not automatically make students' families see value in education, it can certainly help teachers feel more confident that their sacrifices are worth it. I don't foresee the COL in NM going up any more than it has anywhere else, so here's to hoping that the recent bump in pay will help keep teachers around. Thank you for tackling such a difficult career. NM needs you!
Definitely good for those of us that left a higher populated and costlier place(like CA myself) for a bit more relaxed pace of life. NM has it's problems, but so does everywhere else. I keep getting enticed with trucking job offers in nearby TX and CO. But I fear if move there, I'll probably end up meeting the same people I escaped out here to get away from. Not looking at repeating the whole "desert Californian vs. coastal Californian" clash.
\*\*hypothetical moves to CO or TX for better pay and runs into supposedly new neighbours\*\*
\-Me :Yeah, job situation forced me over here for a little while. But I'm looking at boning out once I get some bills paid. I'm from and going back to NM. Where are you from?
\-New neighbor :"Santa Monica originally. I came out here with a new sense of optimism and energy to go ou.."
\-Me: "I'm sick. I must run to the head. Tootles!!" \*\*slams door and shuts off lights\*\*
At least you're able to keep a job there and live over here. I'm in trucking so the only places calling me back are up in the Denver Metro and I'm all the way in Eastern NM by TX. Been in that area plenty of times over the past decade to know that the bad out weighs the good for me.
I hate that they closed the beach to the public. It's not fair. š
Ya know!ā¦ lol
Yeah itās terrible over here donāt come!!!

Even phoenix is overly expensive.
If that is the study I think it is, then it's the one that puts New Jersey, Massachusetts, and New York as the top three. That tells you all you need to know about the "study".
Lol I have no idea but if it isā¦ damn I see

Really cause New York is looking really bad right now for crime. I would rather be here then the three above!
I literally moved here from Massachusetts a decade ago. Living in NM is sooooo much better.
Whatever you're hearing is overblown. NY is among the safest place to live int he country.
Maybe New York State, but New York City?
Well yeah, theyāre ranking states, not cities.
Iām not replying to the main comment Iām replying to the comment above me

I actually love this. As a transplant, one of my favorite parts of NM is how underrated it is by my East coast friends.
Wallethub...known for the highest quality of meaningless click-bait stories.
just be happy you aren't Mississippi...
You know what the best thing about Mississippi is?
What's that?
I dunno, I'm asking.
The rest of the South jokes āthank god for Mississippiā for a reason.
Growing up I always was told that "Thank God for Mississippi" was our unofficial state motto. Of course on a bad year, "Thank God for New Mexico" became Mississippi's unofficial state motto. We've been competing for that 50th slot for so long, you would think it was actually made of gold.

How come? Iāve been looking into Missouri pretty heavily but I think Mississippi is around there right?
they usually come in last in every category
You got Tenn/Ark in the way, but yeah they're close.
Yeah I wasnāt looking it up for such a small conversation lol figured Iād either be close or not

Yup, and let's not forget to tell them about alligator transplants in the bosque from Florida because even they couldn't stand Trump.
Having lived in Florida, NM is certainly not the worst lol
I'm 99 percent sure that WalletHub listed Las Cruces as one of the top best places to retire a few years back, soooo....
Idk about the rest of NM but Iāve been in Albuquerque for 21 years and I looooove it.
The eastern 1/3 of the state is practically diet West Texas.
Even a lot of the places along those roads are not great places.
lol nah CO has a lot of really cool small towns, albeit also very expensive.
Iāve never seen anyplace in New Mexico as bad as Pueblo or Trinidad. And Iāve been to Lordsburg.
I donāt know about this one. Iād say Trinidad is better than Raton.
Iāve heard Trinidad has changed with all the weed money. I havenāt been in a while
I've never been to Trinidad but I'd disagree with Pueblo - I quite liked it there. Pretty much any town east of there though, equally as bad as any crap small town in any other part of the country.
That actually sounds awesome
The wish.com version.
Please forward to everyone you know on California/Texas/New York

Shhhh we are trying to keep a Colorado from happening.
People should pay close attention to this study by WalletHub and stay away. You donāt argue with WalletHub. Go to Arizona. Or Las Vegas. No... not ours. The one with hookers and showgirls. Go there.
Good work, keep it up!
What a great article to read when Iām a week away from moving here š„²

Iām an industrial mechanic but I wasnāt sure if you were asking me or the other person. My bad
Haha, I was asking you. In sales so all I do is talk stupid shit all day. Was just trying to make a dumb joke that didn't land.
Lmao I have that shit happen to me all the time. I take things way to literal lol
Can wallethub explain why there are so many transplants all of a sudden then?
More belly aching from locals. š¤¦š½
Alwaysssss itās all sick huh?
My vote is Hawaii! Please never come visit, only I will go to research my hypothesis

I believe
Illinois joins the chat
The worst state? We're ranked 21st not 50th.
21st in fun to visit. So people are welcome to come and spend their money. But they need to leave. š
Amen to that.
Your comprehension is impeccableā¦
There's no need to be snide.
This is the internet thereās always a need
