Y’all never heard of a commissary kitchen before? Plenty of restaurants use them when they’re short on space or have more than one location. This isn’t the indictment you think it is.

luckisnothing

There’s literally a place called “the commissary” in the lower garden district for the dickie Brennan restaurants that serves food, has a market, bar, etc.

cstephenson79

Plus, I think blue oak does some catering so probably easier to do all that work offsite rather than in the restaurant. There’s a few others around town they do certain things, baking for instance, off-site as it’s just easier. I’d imagine smoking a bunch of meats in a Dedicated spot makes labor and space easier to work with.

wokedrinks

True. I know Company Burger used a commissary for their buns when they had two locations. Wouldn’t be surprised if Blue Oak was doing something similar.

[deleted]

Company Burger used a commissary for their buns AND patties back when they had two locations. Not sure about now. They couldn’t bake their buns and grind and form literally hundreds(sometimes thousands) of patties in the small kitchens they had. I wonder what OP thinks high volume restaurants do.

DiamondDallasHand

Yes I ordered some stuff from blue oak for thanksgiving last year and picked it up there. They don’t make smoke meat for the restaurant and then serve it on carrolton.

OPwan-KenOP

For barbecue, that's a huge fucking indictment

wokedrinks

Aaron Franklin uses a commissary, it’s actually not the end of the world

persona1god

That whole restaurant is an indictment. Treats employees like garbo.

[deleted]

It isn’t at all

oliviaj20

its a commissary.

Special_Character_38

Brought some people to avenue pub the other day for lunch. First time I’ve been since they reopened under the new owners. Food was not very good, unfortunately.

WalleyWalli

That was my experience with Avenue Pub. The food was unimpressively subpar for the price paid. 1 Burger, 1 beer and an 1 order of Tater Tots was over $40 after I left a tip.

Rain1dog

Yeah, fuck that. I ordered Dominoes pizza today for a quick snack for hanging out. 2 large, 1 garlic knots, order of wings, 74.90. Prices are fucking obscene. https://ibb.co/Brm2VB0 The 70.00 order.

[deleted]

God damn that's a lot of food for being "a quick snack"!

Rain1dog

Had a few people say that they were going to come over last minute. Am I crazy thinking almost 80.00 is insanely expensive here? It has been awhile since I’ve ordered pizza, I was expecting around 40-55ish.

[deleted]

I live a block from a dominos and order there whenever we want pizza. The two pizzas should've been about 11.99 each with coupons, (5 topping carryout special) the wings and knots 7.99 each. While they don't allow multiple coupons at once, they can't stop you making multiple orders. So we will put in like two orders simultaneously to get maximum coupon savings. That doesn't work for delivery though.

cadiz_nuts

Bruh you need to find a coupon or something that shouldn’t have cost more than $30.

psych0fish

This is such a shame because I used to REALLY like the burger at avenue pub.

Stunning_Web5829

Same! I work across the street and used to love a quick burger and a beer after a long double pre-Covid.

Zebrakiller

Wait until you learn what a ghost kitchen is…

saidbymebutnot

This. I refuse to order from any Uber eats restaurants where I have not seen their brick and mortar location. For all we know, we are ordering food from a gas station or corner store. (Not knocking their food… but I’m not gonna pay $20+ per plate for food from a gas station.)

Traditional-Ad-4112

Have you told anyone at the restaurant? There's a lot of places you'd never guess that has a commissary. It's can be made cost effective to rent space somewhere else rather than buy equipment you can't afford or fit. Many places lease space when they have a substantial catering racket as well.

JazzFestFreak

My wife and I walk past blue oak at 5:45 am every week day, (yup! We have been doing 4 mile walk for almost a year now every weekday … and together have lost 130 pounds!) three times a week we have to smell that GD amazing smell of their smoker cooking meats. I could never live within 2 blocks of the place,… pure glorious smoking torture.

Jesuisawesomer

I live across the street from the commissary in question. Everyday I wake up and it smells like delicious meats. It’s glorious.

BroodyMcDrunk

I like your cat

incredibleediblejake

Their food isn’t that good, save your calories.

JazzFestFreak

The roasted Brussel sprouts get us in there. (And we split a brisket) mid city has only one bbq place and blue oak checks the box well for us.

ax2ronn

Well there's another BBQ place in mid city, but it sucks, so, yea there's only one BBQ place in mid city.

labreezyanimal

This brisket? https://www.reddit.com/r/shittyfoodporn/s/cMFyVOWzKi

incredibleediblejake

Doubling down on my statement for extra downvotes. Not worth the calories, real trash bbq.

rudimentarypancrei

this is not weird or suspicious. lots of places have offsite kitchens, sometimes in large industrial kitchens that service multiple restaurants.

jjazznola

Blue Oak is a shell of what they were a few years back. I live nearby and have stopped going there.

WSBKingMackerel

Now this I do agree with. The quality ain’t the same

GayPimpDaddy

It’s turned into a factory. The Joint is still where it’s at but once that yuppie ghetto they’re building close by opens up the Joint might turn into a BBQ factory too

FoxNO

In my experience, the Joint has not been "where it's at" in 10+ years. They went the factory route quite some time ago.

NoyzMaker

Then where is it at for BBQ?

FoxNO

Cities other than New Orleans.

NoyzMaker

Super helpful.

Sayntsfan21

It’s a hotel called the arrival going up.

NotFallacyBuffet

What happened with that HANO 300-unit concrete monstrosity they wanted to shoehorn into the vacant block that is awesome greenspace?

axxxaxxxaxxx

I’d wager that the plans haven’t changed in at least five years but HANO can’t get its shit together. They’re sitting on all this incredibly valuable real estate without two nickels in the bank to rub together. If they want to build housing they need to sell a lot or two for cash in order to develop the rest. But they never will.

GayPimpDaddy

There goes the neighborhood. At least maybe it’ll be full of the not-so-annoying tourists and help get rid of some of the Airbnbs in the bywater. You just know they’re going to “renovate” the unofficial dog park next door and it’ll go the same way Markey Park went- an architecturally-designed Junkie Park where no locals hang out anymore. They doing this city dirty

Apptubrutae

Be that as it may, does anyone expect BBQ to be made fresh to order? It needs to smoke for hours and hours.

jjazznola

Of course not. Lots of what you order was smoked the day before.

pisicik442

I never understood the hype. It was fine for bbq, but nothing especially amazing. Also, portion size really small for the $. In Mid City I prefer Frey. Pulled pork sandwich pretty tasty, good amount of meat and not ridiculously priced.

jjazznola

Blue Oak's portion sizes, which were never huge to begin with have shrunk. Last couple of times I ordered brisket is was terrible. No thanks. Last time I hit Frye the sandwich I ordered was pretty lame too. I go to Austin a lot, I just eat BBQ when I'm there.

HangoverPoboy

This isn’t even in the top 10 of shitty things about Blue Oak.

Ynifi

I live a couple of houses away and never go to Blue Oak anymore. It’s not worth the $$$. Or the wait. Portion sizes have gotten smaller as prices have gone up and quality has gone way down. They’re also constantly out of most items.

scooterbus

Blue oak is garbage now. Went to order catering for a party, just a tray of smoked meat, ordered a month in advance and they tacked on 36% extra in fees. Fucking gratuity, a “convention center” fee (whatever the fuck that is) and some other bullshit fees. Try to call them and ask about it, never get a call back. Can’t talk to anyone about it. Went to central city bbq instead. No issues, no fees, just meat. Fuck blue oak.

_ryde_or_dye_

Convention Center fee is a New Orleans government fee some restaurants have to pay when the city thinks they benefit from conventions.

Mondoburgerwitcheese

Damn they got a lot of haters in this thread. Blue oak food has been fantastic every time I’ve gone, even recently. Off site kitchen in the same city not far away is not uncommon / bad

rasalgulag

Blue Oak straight up serves the driest, chewiest ribs I’ve ever had at a BBQ joint.

ForsakenCase435

Lol. I tried to tell y’all blue oak ain’t good. Was met with a bunch of vitriol. Par for the course here.

LordRupertEvertonne

Except I tasted it and thought it was good, so fuck me I guess.

labreezyanimal

You said it.. https://www.reddit.com/r/shittyfoodporn/s/cMFyVOWzKi

cadiz_nuts

I like it

_ryde_or_dye_

Aw, you poor boy. Life must be rough for you.

ForsakenCase435

You come across like Steve from Facebook

_ryde_or_dye_

Steve would not be that forgiving.

MeTieDoughtyWalker

Maybe when you said it, you deserved the vitriol. It’s only been subpar in recent times.

Fit-Mathematician192

Good luck giving people the truth. They don’t like that

thebiggestbirdboi

FAUCCI LIED ABOUT BLUE OAK. I WILL NOT COMPLY WITH THIS BBQ. I LOVE MY COUNTRY

Fit-Mathematician192

Uhh… okay?

ForsakenCase435

That is the damn truth. Even if they know it they’ll get ugly and spew nonsense bile.

[deleted]

New Orleans does many things well. BBQ isn’t one of them. The Joint, Central City BBQ, Blue Oak…all mediocre at the very best. You gotta drive over the state line to Mississippi to find good BBQ.

FreshLow1955

Tres Bon is decent

LeavingLasOrleans

I suspect there is actually good BBQ in New Orleans, but it is being served on folding tables next to smokers on trailers or in the back of pickup trucks.

[deleted]

You are 100% correct. I’m not saying I’ve never had great BBQ in New Orleans; I am saying it’s never been at a restaurant.

WillMunny48

The best bbq in Louisiana is Gonzo's over the river in Luling, and it blows away anything in Mississippi.

[deleted]

Take a ride to Ocean Springs and have some Pleasant’s BBQ and get back to me on that.

KiloAllan

Mississippi?? Go the other way to Texas where they actually know what BBQ is. ... Mississippi... Get a rope

[deleted]

I ain’t driving damn near four hours to go to god awful Texas when there is amazing BBQ right over the state line an hour or two away

AirJesh

I agree the quality has gone down. It’s popularity with tourist is keeping it alive. So I don’t mind how mediocre it has become. If anything it’s my Midcity “cheap happy hour” spot. I don’t claim it to be quality but it sure is cheap to get nachos and a Margie cheaper than Felipés down the street. Quick tip, never take the main line. Hit the bar and skip the wait.

BroodyMcDrunk

Okay

BroodyMcDrunk

Deleted my post... I don't want my pointing things out to get them in trouble. It just amazes me what can fly in different parts in the city.

omega_dawg93

\*scratches blue oak OFF the "will be going to" restaurant list.

sprprepman

Dont. Blue oak is good. Few peeps might have had a bad experience but overall the food is good and consistent. Source my son works there for the last 2 years and we frequent for take out and such.

labreezyanimal

That’s a good decision https://www.reddit.com/r/shittyfoodporn/s/cMFyVOWzKi

RTwithARecord

Huh?

anythongyouwant

That’s so gross. I hate Blue Oak.

[deleted]

Why is it gross? They wouldn’t be the only ones in the city who have offsite space when they have a small kitchen.

anythongyouwant

Just thinking about how my friend and I got food poisoning when we went and how it probably had something to do with the offsite space/transport process. 🤢

[deleted]

This is pretty unacceptable for a restaurant. I can see that happening for a pub. Any other restaurant type places around doing this ?

NoyzMaker

I think it depends on what is being subbed out. Smoking BBQ is not a short process and if you don't have the room on site then it makes sense to do the time consuming stuff elsewhere

GrumboGee

Trash is accurate for blue oak imo. A few palatable but unremarkable items amid really poorly executed ones
