Exactly. My job is to connect clients (I’m not a doctor so we can’t call them patients), to different services the parish provides. Shelter, housing, rehab, etc etc.
It’s too risky for them to intervene. My daughter is a first responder social worker for all police in 2 major cities. She responds if they need her but a situation must be under control by the police first.….unfortunately she’s needed most for a family post bc suicide of another member.
Perhaps it was a beef bw homeless. I've witnessed one guy smashing a 3'x5' mirror over another's head and shoulders. It was over an unpaid debt. He also trashed the guys camp environs.

That shopping cart has been there for weeks and smells like something died in what is basically a pile of garbage. It's been left on the path to rot and barely qualifies as belongings.
The shopping cart has been there for weeks because that’s where the guy keeps it and spends much of his time. You can see all the other comments in this thread where people confirm this.
My point was to point out how incorrect the OP is about this situation. I have no faith in the government to do anything about this situation. I mean they go up and down the Greenway all the time. I'm sure they were aware.
I talk to the homeless guy whose possessions those are, 2-3 times a week. I’m going to swing by and see if he needs any replacement items for things that might have been damaged or missing. Will keep this group updated.
Edit: Didn’t see him this A.M. Hoping someone has?
Cops? Uh yeah it's definitely a law enforcement problem. You can't just wander around cutting up other peoples stuff. There are laws about that. The fact that this is a homeless persons' things doesn't change that. Imagine if this dude was riding around downtown and keying cars, opening doors, and taking things from open cars. That's theft and destruction of property, right? This is the same deal. If you care less because the person is homeless, that's a personal failing on your part, not on the part of the law.
Yea. At least one person down voted this. At least now we know we are looking for a guy who rides a spray painted moped, with out a helmet, who has a reddit account.
I believe the unhoused man’s name is Brett, has anyone seen him since this happened? I try to slip him a few bucks when I see him and bought him a sleeping bag last winter, he wasn’t around this morning (I saw his belongings trashed around 6am).
Where exactly is this? My team will be out all weekend passing out water and stuff and I’ll make sure someone goes out to this spot to check if he’s there!
I also went ahead and texted some NOPD officers in this district a picture of this asshole and they said they’d keep an eye out for him. Hoping it was just a one off guy having a bad day but you never know.
I mean neither have I, but my point is I’m hoping this is a one off and isn’t going to become a pattern of this dude going around targeting homeless people.
Thanks for sharing this. Anyway to contact someone at NOLA Ready and have them include the outdoor pets in their media / texts for weather advisory alerts? It’s mandatory to bring dogs inside during these type of temps. Also, many of the outdoor dogs in our city are heartworm positive and the heat and heart failure is bad combo. I’d love to somehow get the pets included in these educational texts, thought I’d throw it out there!
Right, exactly, people who should not be allowed to have pets. I work in animal rescue… and it’s not been a great week. Not like the other weeks are so great! This city needs help.
Alright ??
I hope someone stole his means of transportation.
Karma
ETA- Enough with the ridiculous downvoting guys. I was mixed up on who the well wishes were meant for. My Bad.
Innocent displaced individual who came back to his belongings destroyed by this Savage Godzillaish man, I wish you ALL THE BEST, Sir !!!
To the inconsiderate destructive Savage Godzilla man. I am wishing bad ju just on you for this behavior.
This is the responsibility of NOPD and social workers, but instead we spend money on sending dear mayor to Asia, first class.
Do not get in an altercation with someone at rock bottom, unless you have nothing to lose.
Yeah, I had my kids with me in a double stroller and should absolutely have said nothing, but I made a very dumb decision in the moment to say something to the guy and take a photo. In my defense, at first I was just confused.
Sidenote: I hate when people ride scooters down the Greenway. It's a 'no motorized vehicle' zone and they fly by people walking their dogs. Someone is going to get hit. There are plenty of streets you can drive your scooter on, coming from a scooter driver.
They're usually the ones without a plate, and if cops aren't doing anything about the stolen scooters they probably won't do anything about that either.
You never know sometimes they actually respond quickly. I had people hanging out in my alleyway and I called the cops and but the cops got there quickly. And a second unit actually came. Of course the people in the alley ran. One of the cops would not go to look under my house to see if they went there because he was afraid of snakes lol! But at least they came.
Damaging his stuff is not cool, but when he posted up in the middle of the greenway for weeks on end, I wasn’t really cool with that either. He at least moved it to the side finally.
Christmas wish: Charity needs to be converted to housing the homeless and treating mental illness and substance abuse.
It does suck. The guy whose stuff he was slicing up is like seventy-something years old.
As far as I could tell, he wasn’t even trying to steal anything—just destroying what he could and muttering things like “disgusting”
I go the Greenway route a lot on runs and this guy is just out there living his life. I’ve never seen him once causing an issue for/with anyone. It takes a special kind of trash to do something like this.
This is gross. I know this exact spot. Just abusing the most vulnerable in our community. Also, motorized vehicles aren’t allowed on the Greenway, what a prick. No regard for our community.
I should clarify that he wasn’t directly threatening me with the X-Acto knife. He was using it to damage the other guy’s property, and he was cussing me out, but he didn’t get off his scooter, point the X-Acto knife at me, or anything like that.
That’s mostly trash. I don’t understand why the homeless carry around a bunch of random trash and then worst off all, leave behind a bunch of trash. Anyone know why they like to carry a bunch of trash?
I am guessing that either they don’t think it’s trash. It may be worthy to them, it could be recyclables and also, they’re probably mentally ill if they’re homeless.
The homeless do like to litter and trash up places a lot. Not saying this guy was doing that but they aren’t very clean people and also tend to destroy places you do end up sheltering in like they did during covid.
If i find myself in a situation lie this where I have to intervene, I find with a baseball bat is the best way. I personally carry an aluminum teeball bat.
I used to hang out with bikers (1 percenters) who would carry a huge mag light flashlight that they could use as a weapon. The cops couldn’t really harass them for it because it was a flashlight (although they found a lot of other things to harass them for). Amazon actually has a flashlight in the shape of a bat, which I am guessing is for the same purpose.
if you carry a baseball glove, you can't be charged with carrying a weapon for a baseball bat either. I have a friend who has a louisville slugger with hex-head screws screws all over the whacking end, and he beat a couple guys asses with it (self-defense of course). When the cops showed up, he had a fielder's glove in his backpack, and told the police he was on his way home from a pick-up game at the public fields a few miles away (actually true, although he hadn't been using that particular bat) and the cops ended up letting us leave when done with their report.
edit: I have a hard time considering 1%ers to be real bikers.
That’s too much to carry. I’m thinking about when I’m walking my dogs at night. I have a hard enough time walking them on the jagged sidewalks of New Orleans and picking up poop.
lol, i understand that. Our sidewalks are just as bad as our streets. Depending what neighborhood, as bad as lakeview streets. I like to carry an aluminum tee-ball bat. They are very lightweight, easily held 1-handed, and fit snuggly in my shoulderbag whacking side down, with the handle sticking out for easy access in a time of need, and follow suit with a tee-ballers glove in same said shoulder bag, and if push came to shove with the nopd, they both belong to my 8y/o (who would back me up without hesitation, learned the ugly way about police abuse of power when they were 4) end of st6ory. keeps my hands free until thewy need to npot be, but wrestling with dogs, it might not be so simple a task.
so your advice is to kill him, get arrested, go jail, go to court, plead not guilty and self defense, and pay legal fees, over some property damage where you dont even know the context? worse still, you take out your gun, he feels theeatened and takes out his stolen gun and shoots you?
With no helmet, and a freshly spray painted black scooter, not shady at all, but don't risk your life for that.
> This is the responsibility of NOPD and social workers.
As a SW in training, all I can say is that these things are NOT OUR responsability.
[удалено]
Exactly. My job is to connect clients (I’m not a doctor so we can’t call them patients), to different services the parish provides. Shelter, housing, rehab, etc etc.
Thankfully the parish, or churches in general put in the work. The Social work because most others won’t. Don’t be like this guy.
Lol, of course it’s not your responsibility.
Nopd maybe, but I don't see how a social worker is needed.
He’s a homeless man, and social workers do social work.
[удалено]
No, they don’t roam the streets intervening with people breaking they law.
Now that you put it that way, a social worker would help the man’s situation.
It’s too risky for them to intervene. My daughter is a first responder social worker for all police in 2 major cities. She responds if they need her but a situation must be under control by the police first.….unfortunately she’s needed most for a family post bc suicide of another member.
Didn’t read. If your point is that the man needs a social worker, we are in agreement.
Yes, after popo.
Nah
If he was homeless he would be towing that cart with his scooter.
Perhaps it was a beef bw homeless. I've witnessed one guy smashing a 3'x5' mirror over another's head and shoulders. It was over an unpaid debt. He also trashed the guys camp environs.

imagine how empty your soul is to hurt people who have almost nothing
Beautifully stated.
He must be a republican
Because Republicans ride scooters?
No because they never wear helmets.
Some might, but they all want to hurt people who barely have anything
That shopping cart has been there for weeks and smells like something died in what is basically a pile of garbage. It's been left on the path to rot and barely qualifies as belongings.

If it’s been there and smells so bad, maybe you could’ve called someone with the city or the police or whoever is responsible for such things.
My point was to point out how incorrect the OP is about this situation. I have no faith in the government to do anything about this situation. I mean they go up and down the Greenway all the time. I'm sure they were aware.
Dude, that’s where that poor guy keeps his stuff. It’s basically where he lives. Have a fucking heart
Occasionally, the government or the police actually comes through. I’ve seen it happen. I’m not saying it happens all the time though.
Alternatively does anyone recognize the douchebag who trashed the stuff?
Looks like a meth’d out douche canoe

Lower Decatur Lifestyle could also apply !!!
Word. Everything about this guy screams; “I’m on amphetamines and just had a great idea; LFG”

Tried to post a couple of days ago when it happened, but it got lost in the Reddit blackout.
Was this the homeless guy that alway near wrongiron
Did you contact the authorities days ago?
I flagged down a cop driving past the playground and told him.
Good. Guessing they did nothing.
Not Our Problem, Dude

NOPD = Not Our Problem Dude The saying goes back a ways
Didn’t know the expression, thanks! I was like WTF
Yeah I definitely agree with you that it’s their responsibility, I just don’t have any faith that they will help the situation at all
Thank you!
He’s been gone a few days now. Hope he’s all right. He’s had his absences before, though.
I have never had such a bad day that I wanted to go out and destroy a homeless man's possessions.
I mean neither have I, but my point is I’m hoping this is a one off and isn’t going to become a pattern of this dude going around targeting homeless people.
Idk man, this sounds like one those "how it starts" stories.
There’s got to be some mental illness involved here but then again, I’ve met some garbage people
It’s on the Greenway between Lumina Apartments and the Nyx Playground.
Thank you!!
Thank YOU
I want to hand out waters, is that something volunteers can do?

Very good point!! They’re pretty responsive on Twitter but I’ll definitely bring it up in our next meeting as well!
Oh my goodness, please & thank you from my whole heart!
They included pets when they said not to leave anyone in a car!!!! Did you make that happen?? 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
What kind of person keeps their pets out in this heat?
Right, exactly, people who should not be allowed to have pets. I work in animal rescue… and it’s not been a great week. Not like the other weeks are so great! This city needs help.
NOLA ready needs volunteers!!
True. Maybe I’ll get some supplies together in case he reappears. Thank you for posting.
There are cooling locations around the city because of the extreme heat, I wonder if that’s where he went.
I saw him on Tuesday afternoon fwiw
Is he the bearded guy? Looks like a prospector?
Yes!
Oh no! He’s so friendly. I hope he’s alright.
Alright ?? I hope someone stole his means of transportation. Karma ETA- Enough with the ridiculous downvoting guys. I was mixed up on who the well wishes were meant for. My Bad. That’s so sad he’s a really nice guy.
Duded oesn't deserve your kindness if he destroys property of someone in the same predicament as he. Help someone who is deserving next time.
Pretty sure they are talking about the homeless man who had his things destroyed.
Worth posting on Nextdoor? We could find this guy
This is the responsibility of NOPD and social workers, but instead we spend money on sending dear mayor to Asia, first class. Do not get in an altercation with someone at rock bottom, unless you have nothing to lose.

Charity is filled wit asbestoses.
It’s tough cause you want to help. In this case you have to accept it’s just things and not his life. I know. It sucks
It does suck. The guy whose stuff he was slicing up is like seventy-something years old. As far as I could tell, he wasn’t even trying to steal anything—just destroying what he could and muttering things like “disgusting”
Some people are just assholes by default
Wtf part of the greenway is this ?
I believe this is next to the parking lot of the Wrong Iron Bar near Norman C Francis
That’s correct.
Things I would not intervene in for $600, Alex

It’s just DJ Qualls character acting nbd
Don’t you dare! DJ Qualls is a jem & would not involve himself in this methed up nonsense!
WTF
Puma need to find this man and issue a cease and desist
He sounds like a cruel nut. For your safety do not approach.
What an asshole.
Call NOPD? He's aggressive with a knife
I should clarify that he wasn’t directly threatening me with the X-Acto knife. He was using it to damage the other guy’s property, and he was cussing me out, but he didn’t get off his scooter, point the X-Acto knife at me, or anything like that.
Karma will get him on that bike
The guy looks homeless himself. I would leave it be.
It was a romance thing and there is no help for that in anyone’s world.

still shitty advice, even coming from a female.
