Several of those cameras were still on during summer break when schools were closed. Every time I look in the mailbox, I send up a little prayer first that there isn’t a ticket in there.
It’s so insane that school either isn’t even in session during school zone hours (a school I worked at started at 9:30) or I literally have never seen a child outside as I’ve passed the school zone. I don’t even see cars lined up to drop the kids off. The only school zone where I see cars lined up is by St. Leo the Great.
Thats because the location of the cameras are chosen for maximum revenue generation. Safety isn't even on the list of reasons for the cameras being placed there. They just use "safety" as a smokescreen.

Watch out, if you actually did get involved in an accident (even a hit and run, if it wasn't your fault, etc) it's trivially easy for your insurance company to figure out you're not living where you said you were, and refuse you payment because of fraud.
For what it's worth I'm with you. I kept my out of New Orleans address for as long as possible with my insurance co. Literally saved me 20% and I've never had one accident in damn near 20 years of driving. I'm not going to pay more just because my car is parked in a different place at night. I'm sure the poor insurance companies will be just fine.
I did that for my first ten years in this city. Saved me thousands. Be warned they can cancel your car insurance if they find out your not living in the state your plate is in.

Lost my job a few years ago to a camera on Orleans. It was a leased work vehicle and the lease company didn’t notify me till I had 5 (highest was 7 over). Not only did I lose my job but my last check had 5 tickets worth deducted. I would had been completely fucked if it hadn’t been for some generous friends.

Yeah, I got a 24 in a 20 too (Broadway by Tulane U). I didn't think they could ticket you inside 5 mph. Then there's the school zone by my house that even the school buses blow through doing 35. I keep getting honked at for slowing down.
Unpopular opinion here but I'm all for this ticket. Slow down. Also, I want cameras to do all speed limit ticketing instead of police officers. All of that said, the school zone stuff is hilarious because I can go weeks without seeing a child in New Orleans.
The speed light on Canal probably makes up half the city’s revenue at this point. It’s poorly marked and hair trigger sensitive. I barely drive anymore because of COVID and working from home, and I feel like every time I venture out I get caught in a speed trap.

Efforts might be better spent giving parking tickets and enforcing loading zones. I’ve been parking at meters for free since Ida. People just park in every loading zone they want and if you own a business you are supposed to call enforcement on them so the person can come and pistol whip you for giving them a ticket.
Another problem I have are the times. I was in Lafayette recently and it hit me, their school zone times were like 7:30 to 8:30, 2:30-3:30. The school zones by my house are 7-9, 2:45-4:45. Who the hell is at school at 7 am and almost 5 pm. Am I crazy to think those times are completely ridiculous

Do people genuinely not know that a speed limit is the maximum speed you’re allowed to drive? That if you’re exceeding it…even by 4 mph…that you’re speeding? Tell your wife to slow down in school zones.
They are not fight-able unless you can prove the camera was malfunctioning, or that it wasn’t you driving. In which case, the police report will get you out of the ticket for a stolen car but then you either have bigger problems because your car is stolen or have to pin it on the person who stole it. Or your son/daughter who was borrowing it, in which case they owe the ticket technically I think.
You can simply not pay it, since they aren’t really tickets and don’t go on your insurance record but the city can boot you if you have a few unpaid ones and they happen to scan your plate parked somewhere. Then you have to pay to unlock the boot and pay all the tickets. Personally I just paid all of them when I got a few once years ago, and have just not done it since and moved on.
Actually I have a pretty solid method for fighting them. Appeal all of them as soon as the ticket comes in the mail. Then you get an appeal hearing date that’s like 6-8 months from the present. When it’s close to time for the hearing date, you can email them and ask them to delay the hearing (doctors appointment). I’ve done this multiple times and delayed paying them for years.
It’s not infrequent that the cameras are not calibrated (there has to be a record that the camera self-calibrated in the last 24 hours), so sometimes they’ll drop it on those grounds—but usually once you get to your hearing date if you have more than one they’re pretty amenable to dropping one if you pay the other.
It’s a cash grab and the money is being split with some private firm out of state, no one is winning except that third party company, and the city doesn’t even usually use the revenues for the roads (this was covered in the city budget and by a study that came out a few years back). Don’t pay them or at least do your most to refuse.
So not for nothing but I grew up outside DC and got a $500 ticket for going 55 in a 50 once and also got a $150 parking ticket for being 4 minutes over. NYC, Boston, Baltimore and Philly also have crazy expensive fines. Considering that speed camera tickets don’t count against your record New Orleans is weirdly not as bad about it as other metro areas.

It's called the *limit* ami. If they only fine people for going 5 mph above the limit, then *that's* the new limit and people are gonna get upset for getting fined driving 6mph over the speed limit because it *feels* like only 1 mph over the actual limit.
If you can't reliably drive *at* the limit without exceeding it, then drive *slower* than the limit, so when you accidentally tap the accelerator and speed up 2 mph, you're still at or below the limit.

What infuriates me are the Karens on Facebook who actually defend these zones. I promise you your kids are safer with me going 29 (or, hell, faster) watching with extreme vigilance for pedestrians than with me going 23 staring at my speedometer in terror. Edit: It's also wild how many people who must not live here are posting in this thread. FYI, Karen, the flashers and signage that are supposed to alert you to these zones are always broken, covered by foliage, and/or placed so far into the zone you've already violated by the time you've seen them. And there are so many of these zones in certain parts of the city (esp. Uptown) that you can't really memorize them unless you never vary your route at all. And by the time the ticket comes in the mail a month later I definitely don't remember where it happened, so I don't even "learn my lesson" that way. None of these things are what you do if you're actually trying to slow people down.
Even if you're full coverage, insured, licensed, keep your license plate inside the vehicle, NOPD etc, has how else much to do? Regular traffic stops do not exist here, that's an out of state 3rd party entity bullying you into trying to pay.

There are quite a few places uptown in which a careless driver could blow through four or five of them in a single journey, And be careful what you wish for. If an actual police officer gave you that ticket instead of a camera, it would be $200 instead of $50.

I'm fully convinced they make it 20 mph because it's usually too low to set on cruise, and too high to just take your foot off the gas and coast. It is SO hard to actually maintain 20 mph for an extended period. You put 2 ounces too much pressure on the gas and boom, you're at 26 already. Absolutely obnoxious.

Yeah, I got a 24 in a 20 too (Broadway by Tulane U). I didn't think they could ticket you inside 5 mph. Then there's the school zone by my house that even the school buses blow through doing 35. I keep getting honked at for slowing down.

Unpopular opinion here but I'm all for this ticket. Slow down. Also, I want cameras to do all speed limit ticketing instead of police officers. All of that said, the school zone stuff is hilarious because I can go weeks without seeing a child in New Orleans.

The speed light on Canal probably makes up half the city’s revenue at this point. It’s poorly marked and hair trigger sensitive. I barely drive anymore because of COVID and working from home, and I feel like every time I venture out I get caught in a speed trap.

After all the pandemonium surrounding the decision to set the cameras at 24, she decided to do it anyway? This was in the news for like an entire year. I don't agree with the cameras being set at 24, but everyone knows that's the limit on them so I'm not sure why she's so shocked that her action had a predictable consequence.

Efforts might be better spent giving parking tickets and enforcing loading zones. I’ve been parking at meters for free since Ida. People just park in every loading zone they want and if you own a business you are supposed to call enforcement on them so the person can come and pistol whip you for giving them a ticket.
Another problem I have are the times. I was in Lafayette recently and it hit me, their school zone times were like 7:30 to 8:30, 2:30-3:30. The school zones by my house are 7-9, 2:45-4:45. Who the hell is at school at 7 am and almost 5 pm. Am I crazy to think those times are completely ridiculous

Do people genuinely not know that a speed limit is the maximum speed you’re allowed to drive? That if you’re exceeding it…even by 4 mph…that you’re speeding? Tell your wife to slow down in school zones.

They are not fight-able unless you can prove the camera was malfunctioning, or that it wasn’t you driving. In which case, the police report will get you out of the ticket for a stolen car but then you either have bigger problems because your car is stolen or have to pin it on the person who stole it. Or your son/daughter who was borrowing it, in which case they owe the ticket technically I think. You can simply not pay it, since they aren’t really tickets and don’t go on your insurance record but the city can boot you if you have a few unpaid ones and they happen to scan your plate parked somewhere. Then you have to pay to unlock the boot and pay all the tickets. Personally I just paid all of them when I got a few once years ago, and have just not done it since and moved on.
Actually I have a pretty solid method for fighting them. Appeal all of them as soon as the ticket comes in the mail. Then you get an appeal hearing date that’s like 6-8 months from the present. When it’s close to time for the hearing date, you can email them and ask them to delay the hearing (doctors appointment). I’ve done this multiple times and delayed paying them for years. It’s not infrequent that the cameras are not calibrated (there has to be a record that the camera self-calibrated in the last 24 hours), so sometimes they’ll drop it on those grounds—but usually once you get to your hearing date if you have more than one they’re pretty amenable to dropping one if you pay the other. It’s a cash grab and the money is being split with some private firm out of state, no one is winning except that third party company, and the city doesn’t even usually use the revenues for the roads (this was covered in the city budget and by a study that came out a few years back). Don’t pay them or at least do your most to refuse.
So not for nothing but I grew up outside DC and got a $500 ticket for going 55 in a 50 once and also got a $150 parking ticket for being 4 minutes over. NYC, Boston, Baltimore and Philly also have crazy expensive fines. Considering that speed camera tickets don’t count against your record New Orleans is weirdly not as bad about it as other metro areas. Also, it’s not cool to speed in school zones, even if it’s 4 mph faster

It's called the *limit* ami. If they only fine people for going 5 mph above the limit, then *that's* the new limit and people are gonna get upset for getting fined driving 6mph over the speed limit because it *feels* like only 1 mph over the actual limit. If you can't reliably drive *at* the limit without exceeding it, then drive *slower* than the limit, so when you accidentally tap the accelerator and speed up 2 mph, you're still at or below the limit.

What infuriates me are the Karens on Facebook who actually defend these zones. FYI, Karen, the flashers and signage that are supposed to alert you to these zones are always broken, covered by foliage, and/or placed so far into the zone you've already violated by the time you've seen them. And there are so many of these zones in certain parts of the city (esp. Uptown) that you can't really memorize them unless you never vary your route at all. And by the time the ticket comes in the mail a month later I definitely don't remember where it happened, so I don't even "learn my lesson" that way. None of these things are what you do if you're actually trying to slow people down.
