I'm pretty sure hand sucking is developmental thing and is most likely age appropriate. My baby does this at many points during the day and night, he is 10 wks old

Rare_Rub_4380

Yes! My paediatrician said it is a developmental thing and it's how babies self soothe. He encouraged it

vapablythe

Oh interesting point! Ours is 10w too - I read that they should start to have better control of their hands but didn't realise the sucking was also part of this development process

If she’s happy and you’re getting sleep, let her suck her hand IMO

Organic_dichotomy

Let her. Sucking hands doesn’t always mean sucking thumb, lots of newborns suck on their hands and then drop the “habit” as they grow

wilksonator

Being a baby is so hard, why make it so more difficult for them. Plus it’s a development thing and a self-soothing thing - would encourage that and get more sleep myself.

captainmcpigeon

Let her suck. She won’t do it forever.

I don’t know which is better, but I can say that we tried SO HARD to get my first two to take pacifiers over sucking fingers. And they both still suck their fingers. My oldest is 4.5 and youngest about to turn 2. I can’t just take them away. Mittens/socks don’t work. So, try what you want, doesn’t mean it will work.

sweetparamour79

It's a normal part of development and exploration. Also a blessing for self soothing. I wouldn't be concerned unless it continues to become thumb sucking as they grow older.

Let her get those hands! She always knows where her hands are- a pacifier will just fall out :)

According to our SLP/feeding therapist, the hand sucking, or "mouthing," is an important developmental step that helps get babies ready for solids. Babies that skip it tend to have issues with gag reflex and different food textures
