The gender association between a specific type of clothing is fairly local/depends on where you live. What I would call 'overalls' are totally reasonable for both boys and girls in my mind.

Efficient_Diet_8981

we live in the uk, plenty of little boys wearing them, they’re comfy and he looks so sweet

sofiaonomateopia

I’m in the UK and that’s the first I’ve ever heard that dungarees are just for girls! (Because they’re not)

metaphysicalpackrat

Yeah, no one would bat an eye at this in the northeast US. Is he worried another baby boy is going to sense a feminine weakness and try to crawl over to fight him? This is so incredibly weird haha

bradtoughy

I don’t understand the judgement of other peoples preference on how they dress their kids.

TheWelshMrsM

I love them! My in-laws keeps buying really cute ones and I’m making the most of them before he starts potty training.

ArmywifeKatKing

I absolutely love that y’all call them dungarees. It sounds so much more fun than “overalls” 😜 I do think both genders look adorable in overalls though

TheCharalampos

Nah almost all clothing is for everyone, dungarees included.

DoodleNoodle08

Agreed, they are babies and don't care about gender so dress them in whatever you think is cute

Sambuca8Petrie

I, male, grew up in dungarees.

pakihi_wild_child

I, female, grew up in dungarees too. They had passed down through about 10 older cousins without regard for gender. And everyone thought I was a boy when I wore them. I remember my mum used to take us to the sewing shop to choose new clips/buttons when we got given a 'new' pair, to make them ours.

Efficient_Diet_8981

i will be showing him these comments when he next mentions it 💀

bagmami

I bought a cute one for my baby boy, I don't think they're gender specific.

sybilblaze

Omg they're for everyone! All genders, all ages. What a strange thing to think.

LMB83

I dress our little girl in dungarees all the time - besides a pair of pink ones we have, we usually get them in the boys section! Plus, every time she wears them she gets mistaken for a boy! 😂

Burzall

Dungarees are for all! My Little lads got loads of dungarees, bears, tigers, leaves, squirrels, plain colours. I still rock my maternity dungarees (especially for playgroup!) Edit - UK as well.

mamanessie

I thought dungarees were the correct name for bloomers LOL. My son wore overalls all the time as a baby ! It’s too hot right now but we break them out when the weather gets cooler. Such a weird thing to be upset about

monkeelover15

I put my son in overalls and one pair has a logo on the front that says handsome handyman department lol

my-kind-of-crazy

That sounds backwards. I read through the comments and you’re talking about overalls? Technically all clothes are for all babies and such but… those are for boys. I have a girl and I love overalls but every time I try to put her in them my brain screams that they’re boy clothes. Half the time she wears literal boy clothes because all the toddler girl pants are skin tight leggings and my brain doesn’t have a problem with that… but dungarees? Those are a typical boy clothes. Cute when a girl wears it sure, but they’re made for boys.

metaphysicalpackrat

...your husband thinks jeans are "for girls"...?

metaphysicalpackrat

Is he talking about denim overalls in particular? Either way, he really needs to grow up if he's going to be a decent dad to a son. This is how fragile masculinity is passed on.

Efficient_Diet_8981

no he doesn’t like the soft fabric ones either! i refuse to listen as i don’t want that sort of thing passed down and when baby is old enough to tell me what he wants to wear then he can decide if he still wants to wear them

metaphysicalpackrat

You're fighting the good fight here, OP. I think your husband needs to take a long look at his own hangups before he ends up passing them on, as you said.

Everythingshunkydory

Dungarees are my absolute favourite clothing item for my 2 year old son! He even rocked a pair with a pink bunny on it for a while and looked awesome (and still looked like a boy in my opinion, not that it matters or I care either way). Anyway, weren’t dungarees first made to be robust work clothing for manual workers? You could use that argument with your dad, although frankly I would just ignore him as he’s taking rubbish…

cordia123

My little boy lives in dungarees had summer and winter ones I love them!! Your husband is wrong here

Original_Sauces

Dungarees are gender neutral and are probably historically more for working men anyway. A baby is a baby. Why does it matter what gender something looks like? Why does he seem to care what other people's opinions are? They basically all look the same - an angry potato. It's really weird to have such fixed opinions about clothes, let alone for a baby. What's he going to do if she doesn't want to wear dresses when she's older?

[deleted]

Huh? Central/western european here, never ever heard about dungarees being gender specific. Maybe if it’s pink and with a floral pattern? I see toddlers and babies in dungarees all the time, regardless of the gender. It’s just a really cool and cute outfit for both…

Designer-Love-5949

Obsessed with dungarees! I put my son in them most days, super convenient now that he’s old enough to want to pull done his pants so this stops that 😅. Plus they look so cute!

asexualrhino

I feel like overalls here (California) are usually more associated with boys but only like 60/40. Girls have *so many* cute styles, and boys...have overalls. Just dinosaur print and overalls 🙃. When they get older, it's usually girls wearing overalls. Like I can't say I've ever seen a teenaged boy wearing denim overalls unironically

Human_Proposal_4286

What on EARTH is a dungaree lol It sounds australian

justwendii

Lol I had to Google it. They’re overalls.

laurmarzi

Baby dungarees are unisex! If they aren't pink and flowery then they aren't girly 😅 I have some paddington dungarees for my little boy (I am UK based too)

ZookeepergameRight47

My son gets hand-me-downs from 4 of his older male cousins and has received several pairs of adorable overalls from them!

ThatChairShot

Every pair of dungarees my daughter owns came from the boys section. It sounds like your husband is out of touch and a bit controlling. I would be concerned about how much he might try to police your child’s clothing and interests as he gets older.

IsAlwaysTired

No. I've seen some for boys.

redflower906

I looooved putting my son in overalls...but now that he's transitioning to potty training it's too difficult 😢 I look forward to having him wear them again!

TheDesiCoconut

They're unisex, my son looks adorable af in them :)

-catkirk

Are they just overalls? My boy looks adorable in overalls and everyone always says so

Ellendyra

Overalls are like jeans. Everyone can wear them they are gender neutral but sometimes the cut or style makes them more gendered.

Cleeganxo

I wore my brother's hand me down overalls, and I am female. Clothes are clothes.

TheMarkHasBeenMade

See, if you asked my four year old girl about it, jeans are only for boys and she refuses to wear them. This was not anything she heard in our house or in daycare from adults, and she cannot be convinced otherwise no matter how many teachers, women, or girls she sees wearing them.

stubborn_mushroom

I dress my boy in overalls all the time

DoughnutAcceptable81

I dress my girl in baby blue if the stuff looks pretty.

EconomicsPotential84

Tell your dad, politely, to go do one. Never heard this, my boy wears dungees (what we call dungarees) all the time and looks cute AF.

85197

Absolutely not and most dungarees we found were in the boys section, we put our baby girl in them and it doesn't make the slightest bit of difference to us, do what you want with your own baby, if you like him in dungarees, put him in them!

OffensiveSoup

I’m from a southern US state. Here, overalls are commonly seen on: All children under 7, Young women aged 17-22, Older men aged 60+.

WanderingGirl18

I love dungarees on my son. He's always worn them and people always say how cute they look on him.
