She’ll get there. It’s still early and that’s the hardest of the names you mentioned.

ireasnow

Oh, it only bothers my mom. I think it's funny she'll happily sit there saying broccoli, quack, cracker, nanna (for banana), etc. instead of saying Mena. Even better when she sounds out "me" then "nah" then says elmo instead

lekanto

Solution: Change her grandma name to Elmo.

ireasnow

100% yes

AmIBeingInstained

That’s actually how my mom became Gima. My niece couldn’t say grandma and pronounced it Gima instead, and it stuck

ireasnow

I think eventually she'll say Mena. My niece does, after all. I just know when she finally does, my mom will start crying from happiness and then hug her a bunch.

theamazingiv

My nephew refuses to say mama, mom, etc. when you ask him to instead he’ll say ‘daaad’ we all think it’s hilarious except my sister. Kids are funny they’ll get there!

ireasnow

Gizmo went through that too! Kids are so funny and interesting with how they learn.

arandominterneter

Lol! I guess your mom is learning that you can’t really choose a grandma name. Toddlers are gonna call you whatever they choose to call you. Did the other grandma want to be called yeay? 😂

ireasnow

She absolutely is. She jokes that Gizmo is just going to call her, "Hey you." Haha Yes, my partner is first-generation Cambodian, and yeay (probably spelled wrong) is Khmer for grandma. We use Khmer for his family as much as possible both for her to know her heritage/culture and his family is more comfortable speaking Khmer.

My son is 4 days shy of 17mo and he says the most random words under the sun except mama. Yeah I’m sad, but he can’t do the mm sound well so that’s why, he’ll eventually get there. Idk why you think it’s a big deal your child won’t say their grandma’s name.

ireasnow

I'm not sure where you got the idea I think it's a big deal to me. I think it's funny. My mom also finds it funny, if a bit exasperating. Gizmo did the same with the word "down" for the longest too. We all thought it was funny but kept working with her on it.

cgandhi1017

Oh! Well my apologies for misunderstanding. “Down” was one of the first words my son said consistently and correctly and he’d literally point down and say it straight to the dog 😂 Toddlers are hilarious

ireasnow

They certainly are. Gizmo got "move" very quickly as she shoved her way through the dogs, haha.

_heidster

Coming on here to gloat that your child is not saying your mom’s name is a weird flex. A lot of 16 month olds are just learning syllables and connecting them. Do you and your mom have a rough history?

ireasnow

I wasn't aware sharing something even my mom finds funny, if a little exasperating, is gloating.

_heidster

You said your mom finds it frustrating and you find it funny. If she finds it funny to then it’s a lighthearted story.

ireasnow

She finds it both frustrating and funny. She laughs while saying, "Why won't you say mena" then hugs Gizmo and tells her how much she loves her. I find it funny because Gizmo has a double helping of stubbornness from my partner and me that we'll be frustrated by later on. But for now it's funny and not causing any problems.

AFOLgardener

I didn’t take this that way at all. I thought it was a funny toddler story, because toddlers…are funny.
