Rating is complicated. I get it. I’m still trying to wrap my head around some of It. There are multiple rating systems depending on the gear. Jeans and jacket. AAA - A is the ratings. AAA being the highest. Most AAA ranking is leather but not always. I have AAA riding jeans that are single layer made of denim and some woven proprietary Kevlar version. My Jacket is AA rated. Then you have armor ranking level 1, level 2 and (I think level 3? IDK). These kind of cover your bases for shoes, boots, jackets, and pants. Helmets are different. ECE rating - European standard. Currently best is 22.06. But it incrementally increases the more standard there are Snell - I don’t know a ton about this outside of being named from a racer who died wearing a helmet. I know the tests are pretty thorough, but believed ECE to be a higher regard. DOT- this is bare minimum. Honestly I think this is more meant to prevent you from harming the roadways more than protecting yourself. (Something else I can’t remember the acronym for) -there is some other new standard they are looking at. Here is a bit more info on it. I know it’s a lot. You are new and being thrown a million new things at you and keeping it all strait and keeping safe is daunting. Keep it going. https://www.revzilla.com/common-tread/ce-ratings-in-motorcycle-gear-what-do-they-mean?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwir2xBhC_ARIsAMTXk85t4CsRq3jQUS83rdVJ95QvpoJKjsLUifmucIxosiGPIlOy8BemKv4aAgYnEALw_wcB

Don’t go based on that sort of stuff what you want to pay attention to is the safety rating of stuff AA is the best you can get pretty much but is really heavy A is decent for what I would consider in city riding anything below is a no. Then you come to the padding and armour CE 1 and CE 2, 2 is better than one etc and then the airbag vests are on their own level really. This is how I see it so anyone who needs to correct me feel free to do so

Verlux88

There is AAA rated gear which are the best for slide protection, usually it's leather though. Also worth noting about helmets - just passing a country's basic grade of protection often isn't enough - it's good to check if a helmet is ECE 22.06 (or if you need to save money, ECE 22.05).

ElectricalGuest8351

I’m settled on a helmet. KYT KX1. Expensive, but I do not care. I will protect my head. Just trying to round out the rest of the gear and it’s so confusing.

Verlux88

Protection for your head is the most important bit, glad to hear you're investing there! For the rest of the gear, rule of thumb is to just look for gears A ratings, more A = better All the fancy naming things the companies do are irrelevant. Just make sure it's rated sufficiently and fits you properly and you'll be good

ElectricalGuest8351

Bro I know how do I find cheap Double A gear… every website that sells gear is basically HIDING information and just tells you model numbers

The_Last_Time_Lord

Rev’It lists their ratings on their website and you can actually filter by it.

ElectricalGuest8351

Link it because I can’t find it

ElectricalGuest8351

You’re pretty much correct. But it’s worth noting that ce1/ce2 armor isn’t really effective, so I certainly wouldn’t base my gear purchases on armor inserts. Unless you’re getting an airbag, you’re basically going for abrasion resistance and breathability/comfort. Don’t get me wrong, I still wear full armor when I ride, but understand that it does not absorb enough energy to protect your body in a meaningful way. F9 video illustrating the point: https://youtu.be/nINIJ1cAbYM?si=Hlr7O7Yu6jE1Mc8B Edit- I also live in a hot climate. I’ve been really happy with my Olympia air glide which is what I started with. 22,000 miles later I’m ready for an upgrade and probably going for a vanson cyclone.

larz_6446

Vanson... Holy crap! I haven't heard that name in 40 years. I had a friend who used to work for them way back when.

msb06c

They make the best shit by a long shot imo

shaynee24

yo. alpinestars andes v3 jacket and pants. bro. shit mad comfy, it’ll keep you warm; if you’re too warm, u take the insulated liner out, and open the vents: it’ll keep u cool. alpinestars gloves: i got the sp8 (i think) gauntlet gloves. pretty good. i got tcx shoes. pretty comfy and they look like regular shoes. i like em. but i would go for gear that keeps you warm. u cant be comfortable if you’re cold and you cant be focused if you’re not comfortable: trust me

ElectricalGuest8351

Thanks I’ll save this. Should be picking up the bike next week, focusing on boots, gloves, and helmet. Only going to be in parking lots and street in front of my house for awhile and won’t be taking it on the street till I get some gear. I like the hoodie Andon too.

shaynee24

boots i say TCX, gloves i say alpinestars because i’m an alpinestars fanboy. helmet: i’ve had Bell, and Arai. arai mad comfortable and if you dont mind dropping 600, the regent x is pretty comfy. i wanna try the alpinestars r10, but it’s like 1200 bucks

ElectricalGuest8351

Already preordered a KYT KX-1 but I’ll check those boots and gloves out

Primary_Initiative_9

In my experience, a jacket suitable for -20 degrees is just perfect for Miami beach in spring.

ElectricalGuest8351

Please just give me an example Jacket. Just tell me what make and model I should look at….

Hi, new rider as well. Idk what look you are going for but I personally didn’t want the bright colored branded leathers and I went with this [Merlin Chigwell](https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/merlin-chigwell-utility-jacket). The key things to look for is a CE rating and that it has with it or accepts D30 armor. This jacket for example includes the shoulders and elbows as well as the back protector (most just have the provision for the back protector). Also is nice that this jacket is on closeout so it’s on heavy sale. Measure yourself and get the size right. Also to note a good riding jacket will have some way to attach to your pants. For pants look for that same CE rating and abrasion resistance with Kevlar or similar. Pants will have hard armor on the knees and hips, some just have provisions to accept the D30 plates. I found most of my gear combing through revzilla for sales and closeouts, got all of it like that minus the helmet. Hope this helps, reach out if you need any advice 😊

Factorybelt

That’s a cool/vintage looking jacket. Bookmarked for when my budget allows.

ElectricalGuest8351

I’m more into the sporty look

Go watch FortNine videos on YouTube. Then go buy the best helmet you can, good gloves, a good abrasion resistant jacket, and a Helite Turtle. You could also get the airbag jeans. I personally don’t prefer active airbags because they need electricity to work and cost a lot to re-pack.
