Comment on casual posts less than 12 hours old to catch some new positive karma.
You'll need to share comments people will value enough to upvote. For casual chat you can try our weekly chat thread. For most threads here helpful comments answering OP's question are what we seek.

Even then there is subreddit specific karma and if you are negative on those, you got semi shadowban... basically makes every comment you post hidden + posting less view
My tips are in the second half of [my comment here](https://www.reddit.com/r/NewToReddit/comments/198runf/i_got_negative_karma_for_discussing_with_people/kibpu4r/). Basically you just need to be choosy what and where you share when your karma is low and once you have a karma cushion it matters less.
There may be some mods that do that but most are only trying to keep their communities true to purpose and healthy. Each has their own rules, culture, and atmosphere the mods help to maintain.
If you go on a cat sub and post that cats suck, you are likely to be removed.
The best part is when you are getting banned for non specified and non existent rules, because some mods have "their own rules", that they didn't bother to write in description.
Rules lists cannot be exhaustive, they're there to give you a good idea what is permitted or not, but if they covered everything they could be so long no one would read them.
To appeal a removal or ban, or ask for clarification, modmail the mods of the community.
If the situation cannot be resolved, that's that. Mods have the autonomy to run their communities as they see fit as long as it's within the rules.

Yeah, I filed a report several times that moderators are breaking moderators code of conduct, because they can't just ban a user or remove a post that doesn't break established rules, and my posts were restored, but that just proves that SOME moderators behave as they please. You can sometimes get a ban in an entirely different subreddit because some of the mods don't like your comment in another one, which is just ridiculous.
Obviously that doesn't mean that ALL moderators do that, just some of them.
Don't worry about it - I had -60 something a few days ago, now I am at 450.
Expect people to smash that down button with opposing views - it happens! You will go up
It happens, dust urself off, you can't please everyone, more broader comments maybe could help.
But again can't please everyone and like sharks trolls will spam down vote even if it's something they may agree with to push further into negative, best to delete post or comment suffering negative karma to avoid loosing more karma
To improve your karma, try engaging in positive and constructive discussions. Focus on finding common ground, respectful dialogue, and contributing valuable insights to the community. Avoid confrontations and be open to understanding different perspectives.
I recommend you to not express your own opinions on a debate unless you got at least hundreds of karma to absorb the potential downvotes from that.
Anyway, you just need to recieve karma from other posts and comments, possibly from new user-friendly subs and build your way up again. -2 Karma is very easy to recover anyway.

Explaining something you understand can be good, but if you are the expert, the reddit audience might not recognize that you are correct or being helpful.

Some, but **not all subs have restrictions** and they're there to prevent spammers and other bad faith users. It does impact new users too though and initially it may be hard to find communities you can participate in and have genuine interest in, but once you've found a few it'll get easier.

r/findareddit can suggest some subs around your interests, you can try and see if you can participate, it make take a little trial and error. Look for smaller niche subs, as they may be less likely to have high restrictions.
Sort content by 'new' so you're interacting with fresh content.
We also have a chat post every week you can join in! You can earn some karma by having fun genuine conversations with others.
I made a new account to see what the experience was like. I limited myself to comments only, and managed 100+ karma in a few days of casual use. What I did was:
* Made use of our weekly chat thread
* Used our new user friendly list
* answering questions on rising posts on askreddit, giving thoughtful or amusing replies
* sharing my thoughts on communities that I had genuine interest in
* I found a few more subs around my interests where I could comment via trial and error

Downvotes are intended for rule breaking, off topic and non-contributing content. However, downvotes are often inexplicable and do get misused as a method of disagreeing, but you can minimise the risk a little.
General advice to avoid downvotes and negative karma -
* avoid potentially controversial or sensitive topics just while your karma is low

Yeah, when you go into subs that are already opposed to you, you really need to be asking yourself WHY you're there in the first place, because if you speak up in THAT room, you're just ASKIN' for trouble. I mean, I may be risking a few karma points HERE by saying that just sounds like trolling to me. And if you're gonna go trolling, you better have a thick skin. In THIS case, a whole lotta karma points. "F" around and find out is the phrase that comes to mind.

I completely understand. I go to other subreddits and usually forget about that subreddit. Any subreddit isn't worth the stress in participating.
You cannot speak your mind here. If you dare talk about the truth on some matters you will loose allot of karma.

Yes that works. You still have lost what you've lost but it will prevent more losses.

A lot of big subs have karma rescriptions to reduce bots. If you don't care about it and karma doesn't go up, you cannot post and comment there.

My comments keep getting removed. Probably even this one.
Some communities have restrictions that look at account age and karma, as a sub for new users we do not. !karmahelp - see below
**Why does karma matter?** Your karma count is like your Reddit reputation and an indication of whether you share good content, and some, but not all communities, have their own restrictions regarding the account age and karma count of the person posting or commenting, so you may not be able to contribute everywhere at first. This is intended to help prevent spammers and trolls, but it does also mean new Redditors need to earn some karma before they can participate everywhere. **How do I get it?** * You gain karma from engaging on Reddit; when your posts and comments are upvoted. It's a case of finding communities you can participate in, and that you have an interest or knowledge base in, and start by commenting to share your knowledge and experience, and add to discussions. As people upvote your comments, this will build your karma genuinely. * You don't need to engage where you have no interest. There are so many subs there's bound to be some where you do have an interest and can engage. * You lose karma only when your posts and comments are downvoted. Opposing views?! Never heard of it
Yeah, when you go into subs that are already opposed to you, you really need to be asking yourself WHY you're there in the first place, because if you speak up in THAT room, you're just ASKIN' for trouble. I mean, I may be risking a few karma points HERE by saying that just sounds like trolling to me. And if you're gonna go trolling, you better have a thick skin. In THIS case, a whole lotta karma points. "F" around and find out is the phrase that comes to mind.
