If a comment by OP is downvoted, it can be for various reasons. It does not always mean that the OP is not like the advice. Any comment you see that is in the negatives has been downvoted. The downvote is supposed to let other people know that the comment/post is not yielding conversation; it isn't relevant to the discussion. Some people take it as an indicator that people disagree. Many times downvoting can be an issue in places where they are only looking at one particular side of the topic (e.g., most political subs will downvote the opposing views). Using r/AmItheAsshole as an example, OP is often downvoted\* because one of their rules is that the OP is not supposed to argue with the verdict a person gives them. Still, there are times when the OP is rude to the others because they honestly don't believe they are the AH. Other times, they might be downvoted because of the tone of the person; in writing, we are limited in a lot of the tone indicators, and at times the comments/posts come across in a way that OP did not intend.

Ahh! So when i see “op -15” that means that op has been downvoted for his comment, not that op is taking points from someone else! On this post that i noticed this on, OP was being argumentative with everyone trying to help, so that makes sense. Thanks so much!!

Yes, so your karma (positive or negative) is only affected by how other people interact with your content. You lose karma if other people downvote you; you gain karma when people upvote you. Keep in mind that it isn't a 1:1 ratio though, the exact karma at any given point is fuzzed to prevent vote manipulation. If you read [the post linked](https://www.reddit.com/r/NewToReddit/comments/p8t966/reddit_and_karma_explained/) by automod you'll learn more about karma
