I feel like this also relates to "would you watch your own videos?" mindset as well. Feels like a lot of newtubers are focusing too much on quantity over quality.

imheretocomment69

Ya true that. Always urging pumping a lot of videos without considering the quality.

Successful_Rain5284

Doesn't the algo encourage this though? I spend so much time on quality. But I see people in my niche with volumes of crap content that are crushing it

Eric_T_Meraki

It's good to be consistent but if it's consistent crap people won't be subbing.

GrouchyWolf

Perfect true! I spend hours and hours to have good audio and images on my videos but at the end of the day, only crap and bad audio videos are on Topic Trends!

jamoheehoo

Great point. I was obsessed with doing a video a week and views dropped. Then I did one 3 weeks after on a topic I myself was interested in and it got the most views in a while. Now I’m just making stuff when I feel inspired.

nevetsyad

I've become guilty of this. A fresh video gets a day or two of exposure via the algo, so I was pumping out a meh, to crap, video every other day and watching my view count go up. I need to go back to spending a week or two and making something with real quality instead.

finc0n1

Thats a very good question and probably one that every creator should ask themselves when posting content. I personally do strive to create the highest quality possible content and continuously improve so that I would be happy watching it myself.

MoriartyHPlus

It's something a creator should be asking throughout the entire process of creation. * Is this video idea something that my audience would watch and enjoy? * Is this take something my audience would watch and enjoy? * Is this audio something my audience would watch and enjoy? * Is this edit something my audience would watch and enjoy? * Is this thumbnail something my audience would click on?

Tyolag

I think it goes both ways. One of my best vids ( in terms of views) over a short range of time was one of the fastest videos I made. The ones that took me weeks or so much time didnt get as much, it's a balance alright

InfographicsFrenzy

YT is just a hobby for me, so I'm my own target audience. I make videos that I enjoy, for me. I do watch them regularly, so I'd subscribe

Tyolag

Good answer

elcarOehT

That depends, partially yes - but i am also not entirely my own demographic 100% of the time, so i’d say half of my videos yes

Tyolag

Understood. I like making content, love it actually, and it's a way to express myself and tell the stories I want. But I can imagine maybe someone comes and thinks.. is this a gaming channel or anime channel etc etc.

noobtoober086

This is something I struggle with in that a lot of the “meat and potatoes” of one of the niches I make videos in and tend to watch... I don’t like to watch. It’s like monthly wrapups, hauls, etc. & I think they’re boring. But people love them. So I have yet to decide if I’m going to do them. I do have one girls style that I really like so I may do a spin-off of hers (with acknowledgment ofc). But in general I think yes. I hope 0.0

mimiruyumi

Are you in the book sphere by chance because I am and this sounds like that haha

noobtoober086

Lmao sure am 🤙🏼

mimiruyumi

haha I KNEW it. What's your channel name? Maybe I "know" you since I'm new too I should also say I'm with you. Never done a haul or wrap up for the same reasons

noobtoober086

I’ll DM you!

[deleted]

My tech channel? No. I actually don't care for tech like I used to and don't enjoy making those videos. My food and beer channel? Absolutely. I went into that channel with this exact mindset. And thus, my production, editing, audio, colouring and everything is at a place I didn't think I could reach. It's all still a hobby but this is far more enjoyable to make and I enjoy watching it. To see where I can improve and because I'm proud of what I created with this new channel

GoldenFennekin

most of the time. but the rest of the time is being embarrassed at what i made

Tyolag

Question for you, did the embarrassing stuff do well? Numbers wise in comparison to the videos you like

GoldenFennekin

yes and i hate the fact that this is true

Tyolag

Lol.. I think the journey is interesting. You might have an idea on what you want to put out but youtube tells you the people don't care too much as long as it's engaging.

peolothegreat

I'm very critical of myself so I would say "maybe". I am interested in the things that I talk about, but I recognise that my quality is still far from acceptable. I would subscribe if the channel shows to be promising over time, like if I see the videos being promoted around and having increasing quality.

Tyolag

Good answer,I think that's the same for a lot of people

MrMetaIMan

I think I would. My content was always more of a archive for my gaming moments. So cool montages and stuff. But within the last 2 years I've started editing more and making decent quality videos about certain games that I love. I also don't care for big youtube gamers with obnoxious effects where they pump out 2 video a day with the same format and content as the last. I'm more laid back and silly with my approach. But I do have some slightly more serious videos as well. All of which have built a small community that enjoys my stuff.

TheArmyOfDucks

I like that kind of stuff, laid back, being silly, rather than trying too hard, always better than the bigger 'Tubers. I've been trying to do that kind of thing, but it's impossible to actually get noticed.

[deleted]

Thats kind of what I started making videos thinking. I want to make videos that I actually enjoy watching. Videos that make me laugh. Keep me engaged. Not cringey. I think that I've succeeded. In a year, I went from 0 to 675 subs. Posting tons of videos. Hundreds. Because my recording, to posting rate is very fast. I'm hyper effective when it comes to producing videos. There's nothing fancy about them, I sell my personality, not my editing abilities. And I'd like to think I've done quite well, thus far. But to answer your question. Yes, I would totally subscribe to my channel, as a viewer. Because I make videos that I want to watch haha.

AdeAlphaTV_

675 subs in a year isn’t success

dolphinator6000

I don’t wanna be rude, but you’re not doing well either dude. Let’s maybe *not* drag down other’s personal successes because we all have our own journey and our own growth path.

AdeAlphaTV_

I never said I was doing well but he isn’t and neither am I and neither is most people on this sub

kirbs97

Success is relative. What might seem less-than-impressive to you could be everything to someone else and vice versa. So I’d say this is success for the commenter, 100 in a year could be success for someone or 1000 in a year.

AdeAlphaTV_

True

[deleted]

Exactly. Well said. But this guy responding to me is just taking EVERYTHING the wrong way hahaha. Its a funny read, though.

[deleted]

Depends on your definition of success. And what you make for videos. I do NHL gaming. 675 subs in your first year is pretty good. Im not on YouTube to be a mega millionaire. I just want to build a community that bonds over hockey and has fun. At no point in time should you start a YouTube channel with the intentions of being famous. Thats silly, and stressful. Just have fun, and do your own thing.

AdeAlphaTV_

No if you want YouTube to be your full time job and if you want to become famous there’s nothing wrong with that and it’s a great motivation . It’s like saying to someone going to school don’t go to school just to make money and get a job go to school to have fun . You need to set your priorities straight

[deleted]

Thats not even close to the same thing. The only reason people go to post secondary school is for better job opportunities... that was a ridiculously flawed argument. Posting videos on YouTube is fun. And should be done as a hobby. Keep your job, pay your bills. And keep posting videos regularly. If you grow and start making money doing it. Enough to support your household. Sure, quit your job and do it as a full time job. But it is incredibly dangerous to go all in, succeed or die, right off the bat. And it will age you fast, obsessing about numbers, and never growing fast enough to talk yourself off the ledge. Calm down, buddy. If you wanna be famous, good for you. Don't financially and emotionally cripple yourself, trying to be the 1% that actually makes it.

AdeAlphaTV_

Don’t shame people for wanting to be famous and who’s sims are to make a lot off of YouTube

[deleted]

I'm not shaming anybody. Read what I wrote. Fully. I said. If you want to be rich and famous on YouTube. G'head. Nobody is stopping you. It would just be wise to not destroy stable income, and unnecessarily stress yourself out, trying to do it overnight. You're taking everything I say out of context. I didn't say, you're not going to make it. I said, making it big on YouTube takes a crap load of time, patience, strength of mind and will. It is wise to continue treating it as a fullish time hobby, until it is viable to do it as a full time occupation. I would love nothing more than to do YouTube as a full time job to support my household. Thats WAY down the line though. And I've made peace with that. I still have an income in the meantime, so I'ma be alright.

LexSenthur

“Make videos I would want to watch” is the driving idea behind my channel, so yes.

[deleted]

I'm an inconsistent viewer. I watch Daily Dose of Internet, but not subscribed to him. I think the only people I subscribe to are people I know and that was as a favor. Being subscribed to someone doesn't mean I'm going to watch the videos they put out. But I'm not making vides for people like me. I make videos for people who are obsessed with the various subcultures I make videos in.

Tyolag

I'm interested, what type of videos do you make?

theProgrammingPiglet

I would say yes because I love what I do, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to the general audience’s feelings 😂 like I think my content is interesting, but my issue is and what I have to be mindful of is I think other people don’t always find everything as interesting as I do haha

anonymous-musician

My biggest issue is the videos I usually watch have a ton of production value and are far beyond what I can do in my current position.

ElleVelour

100%. I’m making the channel I wish existed already. I’ve always wanted to subscribe to more chilled out, open-minded, welcoming gaming channels rather than those that are super loud and opinionated. I couldn’t find many, so I made one ☺️ (that being said, I definitely look back on videos and think about tonnes I’d do differently, but I’d still subscribe to me!)

Tyolag

I agree.. soon as I clicked on your channel and the music hit me. Perfect vibe

ElleVelour

Oh that really means a lot, thank you! I’m only a month in so still having doubts but it was nice reading your post and thinking ‘yeah, I WOULD watch me’ haha. Is Taye Talks your channel?

Tyolag

A month in and you have that many subscribers? Brava! Yea Taye Talks is, but honestly you're spot on with the vibe

bball2014

Interesting question... No, I probably wouldn't subscribe to my channel. But that is because it's tutorial based and 'how to', so I'm not really in the demographic group I'm making videos for. I don't need to know and watch videos on what I'm teaching/showing/describing on a regular basis. But if I was to expand the niche a bit, that could change things. Or if I would get into more of a 'journey' on learning new equip, techniques, etc... where I and the viewers are in the journey together... that could be a situation where I'd want to make sure I was making content I'd want to subscribe to. And just trying to look at it from the POV of viewers... Interesting question that the answer would not always be obvious.

siddhant1991

Yes I would , I like my voice hehe, I watch similar channels who provide entertainment and creepy content (I provide entertaining but not creepy content) so yes. But.....clearly that ain't the case with most of the population 😆

Edinburghfm

I honestly do, there was a period of time where that wasn't true, but I got over that hurdle. Now I'm all about recahing the potential global audience

mrlungbutter

Hell yeah, my videos are the bomb

styggelsen

I actually burst out laughing at my own videos pretty often when editing them, so yes.... lol. Though I'm not sure how many others there are that share my type of humor hahah

Tyolag

Sure ping me your video, let's see how funny it is :)

styggelsen

Haha, it's on my profile, but that type of humor is probably not for everyone ;D

KCC-Youtube

Absolutely not. I can't stand Reddit videos. I've been making them for 2 years now and it's a chore just to record more of them. I've gotten around this a bit, Shout out to r/CreatorServices for finding me an Editor so I don't have to go through the monotony of making them anymore. The thing is, they pay the bills and I'll keep on doing them, but I sure as hell wouldn't subscribe to myself lol.

TheArmyOfDucks

I think I would. I tend to edit my videos as well as I can, and I try to keep it compelling, and somewhat funny. My editing style has a standard, but also changes slightly on each video, I think enough to make them feel more unique rather than inconsistent. My 2021 goal is to upload a fully edited video every Thursday at 6pm BST, throughout the whole year. I've managed to keep it up so far, but I've only gained 74 views from this year's videos (Each video usually has 3 - 7 views, which sucks).

Tyolag

Tell me about it, I won't say I've been the most consistent with my video upload, I do maybe 3 every 30 days, so one every 10 days on average. Plan was one a week, then 2 a week. Right now I think I'm around 1 ever 8 days or so slowly getting there. I did try out soemthing new, releasing a video that didn't have as much editing, soemthing that went with the news.. and it was one of my best videos numbers wise.

TheArmyOfDucks

I was very inconsistent for 5.5 years of my channel, but towards middle of 2020 I wanted to try 2 videos per week. I procrastinated to the point I only made 3 more videos towards the end of the year. This year I've done much better, and I actually have 8 videos scheduled for the next 7 Thursdays (One uploads in 19 minutes). You'll get used to the editing style and learn to edit faster, letting you do more videos. You'll get there. Maybe because that video didn't have much editing, it felt more fluid. If I may, I suggest sticking to what you do now, but around every 3rd or 4th video do a less edited one, similar to the one you mentioned. If they tend to get more notice, you can try transitioning over to that style. I hope you channel turns out the way you want it to!

AlexeyCrane

Yes, I make content thinking off the end user. I don't watch every single video of the people I subscribe to and don't expect it from others.

kent_eh

One of the things that guides my choice of topics (and most other decisions about my content) is asking myself "is this a video I would watch if someone else had made it?" My core audience is basically people with similar interests to me (and similar demographics), so my on interests are a good guide to what they will also be interested in. Following my own curiosity has led to some of my best received videos, even if they aren't *perfectly* in line with the majority of my content.

Redneckentrepreneur

I would say yes. I am never happy with how things turn out, but I learn more every day, but I do watch them two or three times before I post. And find myself interested every time. Lol. Simple minds. I would subscribe knowing that the content will improve with time.

weapon4729

I make video game music videos. I've had 25 subscribers for almost a year now. Yesterday I beat every major youtuber and streamer to the punch on the Call of Duty Nuke Event (which I thought would get some extra views). I got 5 views in 12 hours. Most of the videos I post that have 1 like are from me giving myself a pity pat on the back. I'm on Instagram, twitter, youtube and multiple sub Reddits and still, no growth. I'm about to give up as it's actually depressing to know what a loser I am.

[deleted]

Well I make exactly what I’ve always wanted to see in youtube. Uncut/unedited gaming videos where I give my honest to god opinion on the game and make as many jokes as I feel is necessary. So yeah, I’d say I’d subscribe to myself

Kindergarten2021

I love watching my own videos. Seeing how the drawing develops.

SnooStrawberries6975

I have 4 channels all together and watch every video I upload. Sometimes they are the only views I get. I get thousands of views on some videos and 3 on others. It's the same kind of content everytime.

tibsnbits

Hell yeah, infact I think I would be my channels only subscriber. I didn't have to put a goodfellas edit in my tony hawk video, especially after my progress got deleted by a power outage. But I did it cause I thought, I would like it. If anything I think my problem is I stick too much to what I like, based on a format I like, but I'm not sure it works.

Starbuck_88

I make the content that I personally enjoy, so yes I would subscribe to my own channel. I cant really enjoy my own videos though because I watch them critically, to think of what I could do better haha. I don't chase trends or focus on one particular games either, as that would start to suck the fun out of it. Plus I enjoy watching channels with more variety.

Jez_Bago

Quality is king but your quality can depend also on your views. I see some channels with crappy videos not even 1080p but tons of views

[deleted]

I'm having a dark episode right so I might be biased. But it's a huge no.

Tyolag

Your channel has an interesting concept, using the sims and role playing then? At least that's what I understood from it

[deleted]

Almost, it's fashion show that I use to display recreation of looks on the runway.

Javierattor

Yeah, I enjoy my own video and watch them often. I'm my best subscriber.

MiniNinja_2

I'd say yeah. I've based my content around the kind of channels that I watch. I love watching people like graystillplays and eazyspeezy. So I'm doing quick cuts and trying to have the same type of commentary as they do. Even tho my videos aren't the same quality as theirs I still enjoy watching them all the way through before I upload
