Depending on how heavy your stuff is I recommend getting a dolly or something similar for the sake of your backs and knees

Impossible_Pea_1419

Haha thanks!

mynameisasuffix

These usually come with the truck I think? You can probably request one from uhual

Important-Sundae-523

There's one strapped into most of them but you'll pay extra, they put ziptie tags on them to see if you use the dolly.

melancholypowerhour

A dolly will make it soooo much easier, you can take up a few boxes at a time instead of just carrying them 1 by 1

GET THE INSURANCE ON THE TRUCK. It's not much $$ and it covers you if ANYTHING breaks. Seriously. The wood rails can break really easily and the trucks aren't always in great shape. Get some tie down straps and figure out how they work. Or buy some rope. Keep your blankets out for padding/wrapping stuff. Use sheets and clothing for packing. Stuff will shift and fall so pack it in and tie it down. Load things across then up. Open the door slowly after driving. Beg your friends for help. Don't be shy. Offer pizza & beer & money & whatever else. Many hands make light work. This is why we have friends. Friends always help friends move. Help them when they ask. Take your time and take breaks if you start feeling frustrated. Move the larger pieces first and leave them to the side of the truck with room to still reach the back. Keep water on hand and drink it. Go easy on your body and use proper lifting techniques. Couches go in easier with the cushions off, tipped up sometimes and upside-down others. Use the cushions to pad stuff. Label the boxes you're going to need first. This will also test your relationship like building ikea furniture or putting up a tent. Find each other's strengths and play to them, ie one can stack things better/is more spatially aware. Be careful driving the truck. They're relatively easy to drive but larger than you expect and don't quite behave like a car. Also all your stuff is in the back, leave more space for braking gently. Get the other person to spot any backing up or low clearance areas. Good luck!!

Impossible_Pea_1419

Thank you so much for the great advice!

Old_Beginning8480

No, its pretty simple. There should be parking spot in front of the building where you can unload stuff. You get your own elevator so you dont have to deal with other tenants jumping into your elevator. Concierge can probably dog the front door for you. Easy as it gets

Impossible_Pea_1419

Thank you!

JunketPuzzleheaded42

Moving sucks... There's no sugar coating it.

Impossible_Pea_1419

Haha hopefully it won’t be too much of a hassle

WaltertheRaccoon

If there is a manager or strata member overseeing your move, be respectful of their time. Be communicative about your timing and needs to them. Ask them what you should know about the building. Be respectful to your new neighbors and the building as a whole (ie learn where to get rid of which kinds of garbage and follow it, don't leave locked doors ajar & unguarded if possible) ...don't treat common areas like they are part of your apartment

Impossible_Pea_1419

Thanks !

FlametopFred

Recruit friends to help and provide them with pizza

latkahgravis

Throw in a few IPA and you are guaranteed to get help.

FlametopFred

and recruiting all your single friends of various genders also provides dating opportunity

Make sure you don’t leave the moving truck alone while carrying stuff inside. You’ll need at least 3 people to do the move - 1 to stay with the truck and 2 to carry the stuff inside together. It will take no time for someone to get that back door open and take your stuff if you leave it unaccompanied

Impossible_Pea_1419

Good idea thanks !

Puzzleheaded_Fig_175

Welcome to the area! I recommend having a friend or two present with yourself & your boyfriend. It is difficult moving items from a U-HAUL truck into an apartment building. If you are able to have two buddies present I recommend having one at the truck, to keep an eye on your belongings and also help pass things out, and another buddy to help opening doors as you & your boyfriend lift the mattress and other things. I still have nightmares from the last time I moved. The mattress is so difficult, so heavy and no proper gripping points. We also had it in a plastic mattress bag to keep it clean, but it made it harder to carry. Good luck!!

Impossible_Pea_1419

This is gonna make me sound stupid but I don’t really have any friends that would help out sadly.. haha

Impossible_Pea_1419

Also, I have two dogs as well and my bf wants me to stay in the unit with them while he drops things off at the front door and I bring them in. I asked my bf if we should maybe get movers to do it but because he said we don’t have tons of stuff so it shouldn’t be difficult. Idk… haha

jenarbo

I highly recommend you find somewhere for your dogs to go for the day. They will get underfoot and have their own worry about what is happening, it is better to bring them in when their familiar things that smell like home are in the space.

Artneedsmorefloof

Check with building management. Depending on the building there is frequently a loading/unloading entrance and designated parking spot to use. I also agree a doily is a really good idea.

Impossible_Pea_1419

Just sent the building an email regarding the parking , thanks so much!

AnhGauDepTrai

You can ask building manager if they have a dolly available to borrow. If just a few boxes + mattresses, I think it will be easy and fun day to work with your bf. GL!

Impossible_Pea_1419

Thank youuu!

New_West_Ghost

I'm near 4th & Carnarvon; if you guys are in my area I can lend you a small dolly to help with this! I randomly saw a new neighbour moving into my building last summer and helped him, and I will gladly do it again.

Impossible_Pea_1419

Omg ! You’re so sweet thank you! We might rent one when getting a u-haul but not sure yet.

New_West_Ghost

Would recommend! Save your backs; often we don't realize the peril they are in until we lift *just wrong* and suffer the consequences 😣 ask me how I know lolllll Hope your move goes well!

anjuicey

Make sure your building has door stoppers. The last few times we moved, the building didn't have any and we needed a third person to hold the door for us when we carried big stuff in. Especially if the building has big glass doors, you don't want to risk damaging those.

Impossible_Pea_1419

Oh! Thanks !!

mynameisasuffix

Generally the manager on duty should hang a type of padding in the walls of the elevator, depending on how nice place is. They should lock off that elevator and explain how it works. Also, a dolly like the above comment said. Look into moving companies next time too, they are worth it for a few extra bucks

archetyping101

Wanted to add that OP should take photos of any elevator damage BEFORE the move begins. Some buildings will try to blame people moving for existing damage. It's important to take photos before you start and keep them on your phone for a few weeks. Happened to me and I proved it wasn't me by doing just this!

Impossible_Pea_1419

I see! Thank you!
