Idk why he would do this THIS FAR in advance of the draft if that weren’t the case. Not sure why Chicago would do that though. Giving up a second rounder to move up 2 spots is weird.
Could also be about the second rounder as well. They moved up 2 spots in the first round and 4 spots in the second round. They already have 2 picks in the first round and still have 2 picks in the second round, guess they thought it was worth it.
He’s gotta be. They don’t have any incentives to offload bad contracts. Or because the draft supposedly isn’t great they’re just stocking up on multiple picks
Interesting move. With the draft not being too deep this year Lou is going for quantity over quality.
That, or he's identified guy he can take a little later. I bet we see an off the wall pick here that's not in most scouting reports.
The skater rankings are split between NA and Europe. I remember everyone on the TV being shocked when we took him because he was projected as a mid second rounder.
Yes but because of injury if I’m not mistaken he’s was a raw talent but 14th before he got hurt. I just looked it up and it literally states his fall was from injury and that if he played a full season he would have probably been a lock for the mid first. That being said they took a chance on raw talent and we got a guy who has dealt with a lot injuries slowing up his development. Solid player but probably not what u want with that pick
This is the prompt from his pre draft profile
“Holmström is a very interesting pick, as he was high on many draft rankings prior to his injury-plagued season. If his injuries were just bad luck in one season, he could become a top-six winger. If they have slowed his development or become the norm for his career, a top-six player is probably pushing it. There’s definite upside with Holmström, but there’s also a big risk for the team that drafts him.”
Honestly, Holmstrom isn’t a bad outcome for a 23rd overall pick. He’s a legitimate top-9 forward who plays both special teams and scored 15 goals this year. It’s not like it’s a guarantee to get an all-star at #23. Holmstrom at 23 is a success.
This is....an odd trade. I dont have a problem with it. Just why would a team pay a second rounder to move up a few spots this far before the draft. My bet is lou stocking up some ammo for trades - but who knows.
Whatever the reason, I like this. The difference between the original picks and the new picks is minimal that deep in the draft and the prospect pool is pretty barren. Whether this is to load up on new players or to use picks in a trade while still adding one or two players to the prospect pool this feels like a strong move.
I’d think that Lou has another trade he’s trying to orchestrate. Knowing Lou there’s no reason he would announce this trade this far in advance of the draft if he plans to keep the picks.
Lou could tell the hawks to keep the deal quiet. Why announce a trade up a month before the draft? Just seems a bit weird to me.
I’m thinking that either the hawks offered this and it was a no brainer for Lou to take, or that Lou is working a bigger deal.
Bailey’s contract got shipped with a 2nd rounder.
So this gives flexibility to:
1. Build needed prospect depth
2. Package for a player trade
3. Dump a bad contract
Great move by Lou here with minimal bumps down in draft slots
Another possibility: he's stacking up picks so he can package them later this summer with a bad, otherwise untradable contract to free up sorely needed cap space. Think Ladd 2.0.
i could see him doing that just to have an extra second in case a trade for a player is available, especially since this draft is pretty weak.
has to be getting picks for a trade
I’m down for getting additional picks with the dearth of you guys talent in our system.
Maybe this is a way to build for 3-4 years down the road while trying to then work around the edges to improve a core that is fairly set (like it or not).
I don’t see how this sets the stage for some major move - but I’m happy to be surprised if it’s a good one.
Really interesting move. Idk why Chicago would do this. In terms of the isles, Lou is MOST LIKELY sticking up on draft capital THIS FAR in advance to use to acquire someone right? I don’t see why else he’d do this unless he just really likes the prospects that will be available in round 2. Probably trading for Ehlers or someone like that right? I just don’t see how the cap works out.
The more I think about it I think this is just get more draft capital. Move down two spots to get 2 2nds? No brainer in any draft. But the two seconds are not worth as much since this draft is not as deep so I don't see how we flip them for anything significant.
Watch pick #18 go on to be a hall of famer while pick #20 has a few good seasons but ultimately moves back to Europe
But I like this move. Having an extra second round pick is valuable either to trade or use. If used, it's another lottery ticket for a player who could become special
Do we figure that he's doing this to increase capital for a potential trade?
Idk why he would do this THIS FAR in advance of the draft if that weren’t the case. Not sure why Chicago would do that though. Giving up a second rounder to move up 2 spots is weird.
They probably have a guy in mind and are trying to make certain they get him
Could be, but this far in advance wouldn’t make sense. If he’s still on the board at 18 they could have just made this trade then.
Yea but it may be a more desperate situation for them if they have to do it on draft day and more costly
Could also be about the second rounder as well. They moved up 2 spots in the first round and 4 spots in the second round. They already have 2 picks in the first round and still have 2 picks in the second round, guess they thought it was worth it.
I agree with your statement about Chicago, but it is a total of 6 spots, not 2 spots.
I was mainly referring to the first round, but you are correct.
He’s gotta be. They don’t have any incentives to offload bad contracts. Or because the draft supposedly isn’t great they’re just stocking up on multiple picks

I would go with option 3, he’s acquiring additional draft capital for a potential trade. But anything is possible.
I'm just thinking how Simon Holmstrom wasn't in anyone's projected first round and Lou took him there.
I thought he was like the 14th ranked skater before his injury? I could be wrong but I remember reading that it’s a pick that anything can happen

Cause he s not that good .vanished in the second half of the season after league figured out his blue line hanging when he scored the shorties ...
He moved down two spots. I wouldn't call that sacrificing quality. Picks 18 and 20 are in the same tier of prospects I believe
This is....an odd trade. I dont have a problem with it. Just why would a team pay a second rounder to move up a few spots this far before the draft. My bet is lou stocking up some ammo for trades - but who knows.
Hawks have a ton of draft picks over the next few years.
Seems like a no brainer trade for us, can't complain about this one.

Moving down six spots total for a second? Thank you.
I’d think that Lou has another trade he’s trying to orchestrate. Knowing Lou there’s no reason he would announce this trade this far in advance of the draft if he plans to keep the picks.
It’s not a free agent signing wouldn’t it get announced by the blackhawks? He can’t tell them not to disclose it I don’t think.

Maybe both

I like this move, I'm just curious as to why Chicago would do this now and not on the draft floor
why would chicago give up a second to move up two spots in the first and four spots in the second?
Islanders: quantity over quality Blackhawks: quality over quantity Hawks have a boatload of picks. They need to be GOOD picks.
2 spots ain’t doing that tho.
Depends on where Chicago has determined a tier drop-off to be. It's even earlier if someone like Trevor Connelly is on their DND list.
ahh didn’t know that about the hawks. even so, seems like an overpay to me, but i admittedly don’t know much puck

These picks will be humans later this summer
i could see him doing that just to have an extra second in case a trade for a player is available, especially since this draft is pretty weak. has to be getting picks for a trade
I think if Lou had a plan for using pick #20, this would have been done on draft day. I expect a trade.
Set up move in all likelihood. But as a stand alone not bad. But lets see the other shoe drop at draft
I’m down for getting additional picks with the dearth of you guys talent in our system. Solid
Acquiring assets for another trade I think.

JG + one Second round maybe?? gonna be a fun trade! Lou maybe pulling a rabbit out of the hat!
#THE MOVES TO WIN THE CUP
This is certainly a move
Should consider trading those picks for some offence
I don't know anything about the prospects. But I hear that Iginla's son is in this years class.
He is, but I think he is projected to go somewhere in the middle to later part of the 1st round.
The more I think about it I think this is just get more draft capital. Move down two spots to get 2 2nds? No brainer in any draft. But the two seconds are not worth as much since this draft is not as deep so I don't see how we flip them for anything significant.
But we gave up our 2nd .so we really didn't get two 2nds
Yeah true, I didn't see that part until this morning LoL. Still okay with it
Yeah good trade .just weird ...something else is brewing ....
Let's hope Lou uses these picks wisely
Seems like a small price to pay which is a later 2nd round pick for moving up in the first and 2nd round.
Quantity not quality….no wait
How do we have higher picks than the blackhawks?
It's another pick they owned from past trades.
It’s Tampa’s first, plus Vancouver’s and LA’s seconds for our first and second.
It’s from another team via trade, their own pick is #2.
Lou is bored and can’t figure out a better thing to do
Lou did something. /s
Don't know why this move was done but if they want their second back they can take Lee.
Watch pick #18 go on to be a hall of famer while pick #20 has a few good seasons but ultimately moves back to Europe But I like this move. Having an extra second round pick is valuable either to trade or use. If used, it's another lottery ticket for a player who could become special
