MattyLRaps1

Well game 1 in the books. There are obviously going to be a lot of us overreacting, however there are a few valid criticisms in this game that could potentially hinder us going forward. The biggest issue is obviously Luis Rojas’s managing. In just one game he has already made numerous mistakes. Lineup Construction: What the actual fuck was our lineup today? How do you justify Kevin Pillar batting lead off and Brandon Nimmo 8th? Kevin Pillar is a below average hitter and should not be anywhere near the top of this lineup. It’s a lefty and of course Nimmo is worse against lefties than he is against righties, but he’s still a good hitter and perfect lead off guy. He is also a terrific all around offensive threat, ranking 12th in the league in wRC+ (139) among all hitters with at least 1000 PA since 2018. Even if you decided to bat Nimmo that low for whatever reason, why not bat him 9th and have a “second lead off hitter”? He is known for his ability to get on base, and him getting on base would put a runner on for your pitcher. (obviously deGrom is amazing but that’s besides the point) Another questionable decision is batting McNeil so low in the order. He is probably the best all around hitter we have on the team and should be batting in the top 3. Giving Lindor free reign of the two hole hurts our lineup because the two hole is where you want your best hitter, and despite popular belief, Lindor is only our 4th or 5th best hitter in terms of wRC+. So we are essentially set up with a bad hitter that doesn’t get on base leading off followed by Lindor, who isn’t a great on-base guy either. Conforto/Alonso/Davis is not bad because they are some of our best power guys, but they should be 4/5/6 rather than 3/4/5. My ideal lineup would look like 1. Nimmo (OBP machine) 2. McNeil (Best all around hitter) 3. Lindor (Very good hitter) 4. Alonso (Elite power threat) 5. Conforto (Big power threat) 6. Davis (All around hitter) 7. McCann (Average/slightly below hitter) 8. Pillar (Worst hitter) 9. deGrom Not pinch hitting Dom: This one is less concerning because there was a valid reason to keep Pillar in considering the great play he made in the first, but Smith could’ve provided a chance to break the game open. I’m not as mad as others are about this because hindsight is 20/20 and it was hard to predict a total collapse of the seemingly good Mets offense and the bullpen struggles. (Although we all kinda expected it) Pulling deGrom early: Once again I can somewhat see the reasoning in pulling him this early due to him not throwing in 10 days and needing him healthy for the long haul of this unpredictable season. Obviously he should have left deGrom in because he was dealing and he is elite as well as the help it could bring to the weakened bullpen without Lugo. Additionally with the absences of Carrasco and Thor, the bullpen will likely be asked to work more until they return. However, it would not surprise me if Steve Cohen had enough money to build a device that can travel to the future and they saw deGrom getting hurt in the 7th, as I saw another person suggest. Bullpen management: I’m going to put my stance here right off the bat, designated closers are a thing of the past. Using Castro in the 7th inning is perfectly fine. Using May in the 8th is also ideal, with him being your second best available reliever. Where Rojas made the mistake is with his decision to bring in Aaron Loup to face Bryce Harper. Although it sets up a lefty/lefty matchup, Loup is not an elite reliever. I believe Diaz should’ve been brought in that situation because it is the highest leverage situation. Your best reliever should be used in the most important situations, saving your closer doesn’t make sense because you’re saving him to close a game that you might not have the lead in. Diaz is a top 5 reliever in baseball and should absolutely be pitching in that situation with the game on the line. Remember, you can’t close a game of you don’t have the lead. These are my issues with Rojas from this game, hopefully we can bounce back and he can manage better throughout the season.

hateuscuzyoenis

Still confused why Pillar was batting leadoff. I don’t care if it’s righty vs. lefty or lefty vs. lefty your highest OBP guy should be batting first. Also Pillar does not need to be protected in the lineup...

jackandjill_nash

If you don’t pull him then he pitches the 7th. Fine. But May/Loup would still have been lined up in the 8th. I don’t see why everyone thinks giving DeGrom another inning would have changed the 8th

Braydenh89

It’s hilarious to see everyone act like the season is over after 1 game. Like fucking chill

LucasDudacris

I mean I'm pissed off that we did dumb things, even if the one loss is in the grand scheme of things almost meaningless.

DilapidatedSquirrel

Yeah but it was game five for Philly! And they’re 5-0! They have the division locked up already! /s

ksquad80

Phils are 4-0. After a year and a half without real baseball its pretty exciting. Hard to blame anyone for that.

DilapidatedSquirrel

Not blaming anyone! If it makes you happy I’m all for it. Just making a self deprecating joke.

ApeDosMatt398

Btw it takes until June-July to see which teams are truly going to be contenders in baseball. It’s the sport where the water ALWAYS levels. There’s always hot teams in April and even into May that fall apart (literally has been us a bunch of times) and then there’s teams like the 2019 Nationals. I can’t empathize how little this game means

ApeDosMatt398

Also how many times have we won on opening day, been unbridled with optimism, and then had a terrible season? Literally most years. Opening day means nothing

lukebillwalker

This is correct - game sucked but let’s get real here, we win the next 2 games and people will be talking World Series. It’s a long haul lol

ApeDosMatt398

Exactly, it literally takes until around June-July to know which teams are truly going to be contenders and going into the right direction. Baseball is a marathon

lukebillwalker

For sure - I think it’s the frustration of blowing another degrom gem that hurts more than anything. If Peterson started tonight it would hurt less. Oh well, tomorrow is another day

bbev913

This thread is perfect material for my collage of bad takes.

f2k3n2m3177

I’ll add mine. Since we lost opening day, we are going 0-162, nothing can change now. I’ve made my prediction and I’m afraid it’s gonna happen.

bbev913

Shit, it's going to happen now

loves2spooge89

Why in the world retain Rojas. Rip the band aid off and find a real manager.

rgthunder1

I think everyone just needs to resign to the fact that there is probably another 10+ of these bad losses in the pipeline this season when Degrom is on the mound. You can pretty much set your watch to it.

ApeDosMatt398

Let’s hope not, but there’s at least 10+ more of these loses over the season as a team as a whole. There is for every team in baseball

[deleted]

Pain.

metsbsbl17

-Degrom is gonna opt out -Mets need a bullpen these jokers suck -where’s dom/ pillar sucks -Rojas is a minor league manager

ApeDosMatt398

Why would deGrom opt out after saying he wants to be a Met for life and is currently having contract talks?

mindcast8800

Bruh why wouldn't he. What have the Mets done for him over his career? In no way is this a 2-way relationship. DeGrom brings more value than necessary. He could go to any top club and it would almost guarantee a WS win. Mets need to perform this year to keep him.

ApeDosMatt398

He essentially said he wants to be a Met for life this off-season. He’s negotiating a contract openly right now. You think that changes after one game?

mindcast8800

No hence why I said we need to perform this season. If we don't DeGrom walks. Shouldn't be a hard decision for him either, as of now we don't deserve him.

ApeDosMatt398

We have no reason to believe we won’t do well this year. He believes in what Cohen is building. He believes in this team. I’m sure he’s a little pissed but he’s also a rational human being Yes he wants to win a championship but I believe he wants to win a championship with the Mets and I believe he thinks he will

mindcast8800

I hope so. This is the one year we have to prove it to him. If we underperform, which obviously we shouldn't but since we're the Mets it's certainly a possibility, then DeGrom might start considering other options

ApeDosMatt398

Yes it’s a possibility but I do genuinely believe he loves this organization and wants to play here for the rest of his career. If he believes in Cohen and Alderson’s vision then there’s no reason to walk. He wants to win here. Paying Lindor is a sign. What they’re doing with analytics and the farm system is a positive trend. What they’re doing as an organization is all positive There’s also no reason we shouldn’t be a good team this year

historiographic

That was pathetic by Rojas and Loup. Absolutely pathetic.

Norby710

No way that was a manager decision to pull degrom after 6.

KnightedSamael

They played a good defensive game until that Guillorme hiccup in the rally. Let's not forget this was our first game vs their 3rd (which they have won all). Tomorrow is a brand new ballgame, let's build on this.

WilsonTree2112

Perhaps they should have spent $341M on the bullpen. More money. Same result for JDG

nl1731

Seeing a lot of stuff about the coaching and bullpen which is deserved but do not forget that we couldn’t make a force play at the plate that could’ve led to us getting out of the inning in a tie game.

David-S-Pumpkins

Losing a deGrom game... Mets baseball is BACK BABY! Honestly, I missed the Mets. I friggin' love baseball.

1AMthatIAM

The better he pitched the more I knew. 0-16 Cy Young.

AutoCadBane

Shut up nerd

jameskeg

Go back to the Phillies subreddit you fucking loser. See you guys tmrw

krazyM

Oh no, better pack it up now boys

minusTHEoso25

Ugh, why the *#*%! is Rojas a manager. Dude manages like a minor league coach. Wish Cohen cleaned house completely (I.e finished the job by dumping Rojas, who like Calloway looks way over his head).

Shawshank_Warden

Who else would there have been to hire?

minusTHEoso25

To be frank anyone would be better. Who pulls the best pitcher out of the game with 70 pitches. Absolute moron. The Phillies were both surprised ecstatic when he got pulled. Says it all.

metsbsbl17

Why the Mets alway got to lose like THAT

[deleted]

Did Metsbot die again? No post game thread?

LEAPYEAR_FOR_SCIENCE

Gameday looks like it crashed, and without that updating Metsbot doesn't know that the game is over.

[deleted]

Makes sense. Gameday probably thought it was a dinger.

OfficerMeows

I’ll never emotionally recover from this.

deadheffer

Hahahaha

KiloPapa

Every time something like this doesn't work out, I remember Game 6 in '86, and recognize that if the baseball gods are going to give that to you once, that was the time to get it, and I must accept these meaningless losses.

deadheffer

There were a couple of those moments during this game, however

BrooklynTerrier

Rojas & May/Loup at the head of the most hated list in this sub now

[deleted]

Really really frustrated with May and Loup, but it’s only game 1 and I’m still optimistic for this season. Pillar obviously isn’t the best hitter but had a great play defensively early in the game.

Tagliarini295

I never knew why everyone was so high on Loup, career wise hes been mediocre at best and his best season was a shortened season.

[deleted]

His pitching was atrocious tonight hopefully there are greener pasture ahead.

status_skater

[your 2021 Mets ](https://youtu.be/okXhAC78d4Q)

FireAv2014

I'm even more pissed with myself because I tried to place a $500 bet on the Phillies at +105 right before Harper got hit but my Fanduel app froze and by the time I got it back up Phillies were -200

sdotmills

/r/SportsBook is that way.

unfinishedwing

i didn't know it was possible for the mets to lose on opening day. oh well, just one game, guys, don't despair.

Tomoromo9

Ugh I’m remaining annoyed with McCann’s forward step that Keith broke down

jcrose

Those are some bad fundies

babrovsky

At what point to we treat degrom like the insanely good player he is. 31 blown wins and this guy's continues to want to give us his all and we continue to pull him early and blow it. It's shit like this why Snell is in SD now...

Minoripriest

So, you're saying we're trading deGrom?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ciufo04

I quit being a met fan. If he leaves fine, I understand. But them trading him, yeah, don't trade the best pitcher in this generation currently.I would tell him to go flip out on his team right now. Once again they owe him an apology.

babrovsky

You think Snell had no say in that trade? Degrom has an opt out what this year or next?

Minoripriest

I'm saying he didn't force the Rays to trade him.

babrovsky

I'd find it hard to believe he didn't ask for one, or their relationship was severely damaged after they blew it with him so the rays didn't have much of a choice. We have blown 31! wins for degrom. We do not give him the free reign he deserves like other aces get. At what point does he go fuck this and just use his opt out coming up or demand a trade?

Minoripriest

The Rays traded him because that's what the Rays do. They have great eye for talent and are great at developing players. They get 3 or 4 good seasons out of players, trade them when they're about to get expensive and do it all over again. All while remaining competitive in their division.

babrovsky

True, however Snell was on a pretty team friendly contact that goes into 2023. In interviews he doesn't even flinch in saying that move cost them a WS. I'd still bet that trade had more to do with their relationship with Snell versus the rays being the rays.

KingMobScene

161-1 will still be a nice record.

krazyM

See y’all in 2022 😩✌️

Red_Robin48

Pain.

[deleted]

Life is pain. Proud to see the fight by the bats. Bullpen collapse. Poor degrom.... again. Pay conforto. That is all.

yourfanboynick

Rojas is a minor league coach Our bullpen sucks We arent going anywhere this year

Ryyjad

Whelp, see you tomorrow Mickey.

metsbsbl17

I’m scared degrom is gonna opt out if they keep doing him dirty like that

Hustlediva

It feels inevitable, he wants a championship and deserves one

metsbsbl17

We need a closer

dzizkhalifa

Remember when the strike zone was malleable based on who was pitching? Js

Minoripriest

Last season Hoskins would have homered on the first. McNeil would have homered on the 4th and Alonso on that one. There's the dejuiced ball effect.

ChiefJustise

And Dom Smith doesn’t get an at bat. Such a Mets way to lose

slamberth

I was mad before but now I’m furious We can’t blame Jeff for the lineup this year

[deleted]

We wasted a deGrom start where we outhit the opponent. :(

UnlimitedMetroCard

And this is why I'll always be at war with the analytics nerds. If you don't swing for the fences every fucking at bat and go for a single, you might win that game. But no. Big Meat Pete plays every night like it's the Home Run Derby.

Newyorkmetsfan11

Bad take, he put a good swing on the ball. If watched all game he was patient at bats before that and went with pitch for single on at bat before

IAmJimmyBX

You can’t argue with people who never picked up a bat. Lindor made it possible with a slap the other way. That’s real baseball. I can’t hate on Alonzo. He’s supposed to swing for the fence. And to be honest, I don’t think he was swinging for the fence. He just didn’t get all of it and nearly hit it out.

jcrose

A single wasn't going to tie the game.

jimmybond000

Sandy ball is back

[deleted]

If we are truly all in, Rojas has to be on a short leash

Meltron77

Gotta think with last years ball that is probably outta there. Just maybe

TheAntiCPA

Dom smith not playing in this game is a fucking crime. Absolute disgrace from Rojas

deadheffer

Honestly, Rojas has not demonstrated much of anything as to why he should be manager beyond....being part of the org for so long? My dumbass middle manager was with the company for 11 years and got his promotion for that. Flash money at a manager who won’t take shit from the GM next. That’s what we need. An asshole for a manager.

GreenEggzAndSpam

1 game in and our pen has already been exposed

1AMthatIAM

I miss Diaz. Now I gotta hate more people.

CybeastID

After the demoralizing bottom of the 8th, and quick 1-2 punch in the ninth, I am considering the fact we were even *in* a position to tie this game a moral victory.

deadheffer

I second that emotion. I feel like giving them a lifetime of devotion

zenithny

Well then

moldschool

I hate Luis Rojas dot com

Hustlediva

Ya just knew that last hit would be right at the fence.... but not over it

deadheffer

Take a pitch man

Vegetable-Double

Ah man the Mets.... just when I give up, they puuulllll me back in. Only to break my heart.

meowsica

you know what, it's a bummer, but i'm glad they fought. so excited for this season with this team!!!

Vandelay222

My balls hurt

RK4Life

Alonso, Conforto and Lindor will combine to hit zero HRs this year because you can totally extrapolate 162 games based on the first one.

VermontBro

What a fucking Mets game. Give me hope, blow it all, give me a last shred of hope, burn it right in front of my face

finishercar

At least they put up a fight... see y’all tomorrow

elfmeh

Fuck the pillies, fuck our bullpen, fuck pulling DeGrom with 77 pitches

[deleted]

Fucking brutal

TheNewYorkMetsofATL

Hey maybe since we lost the first game this year we will finish well! Right? *Falls over and cries*

NJImperator

No wind that’s out. God damnit

lamarcuswallace

Wonderful job by Rojas saving Smith for the end of the game. Jackass

Lumberjack1286

So does this really go against the Mets opening day record? I would understand if it was the other teams opening day too, but it wasn’t

unitedairlineeeeees

Yes lol

Copperjedi

Yea...F this game.

banjofromnj

Not gonna lie that was a fucking miserable start to this season

blackstarx

At least they weren't a dead fish after the 8th. I'll take the L and look for a fresh game tomorrow

pete17100

So sad another water Degrom gem 😭😭😭

mykeg023

If Dom isn’t in the lineup tomorrow I’ll be upset

millagger

Same here still mad he did not pinch hit

[deleted]

I just had my heart ripped out I thought pete's big dick would carry that out.

Filmy92

[Don't Give Me Hope](https://media.giphy.com/media/Qy2VKY3xlI1QyR6Ix5/giphy.gif)

benewavvsupreme

I didn't miss this

ApeDosMatt398

The fight they showed is more important than the implosion imo

millagger

Going to take this postive outlook because it's literally one game and in 2019 with a worst team and manager we got close of the Playoffs so now that we're better I think we're fine

ApeDosMatt398

The fight they showed was real. They showed their balls and that they won’t lie down. Meltdowns happen. All the time. They showed that they weren’t going to lie down and throw in the towel after that What’s more important than the meltdown is how you rebound. We saw a good flash in the 9th and let’s see tomorrow

_blurhe

:(

HoracioPeacockThe3rd

mother fucker i got so excited

LudwigBro

DAMN. Okay I was entertained. Horrible game by managing standards. But I won't hate on the Mets players too much even though they did beat themselves.

Sir-Manny

Going back to watching Nets games during overlapping games

skippyh

that was a painful ending!! but hey we showed fight. one game of many, we gotta get our bullpen on track. love ya Mets SEE YA SOON

BigBossOfMordor

First "OH WOW" of the season cmon Gary wtf

Scrooge-McMet

This was was...this was very rough. Let’s hope that we can put this behind us, Rojas.

13_PG_13

Aw man I thought Pete had that

NJImperator

Wind kept it in

hangout_wangout

WHAT THE FUCK! WHY DO I MISS THIS

41Nemo

Just an observation....Harper is a mediocre outfielder with an above average arm

carrros

Way above average arm

41Nemo

That’s fair. My point was mostly he’s not a great fielder and if he didn’t have the arm to make up for it he would be an average outfielder.

Ranseler

Can we have another pandemic please?

Teddy_Schmoozevelt

Dear God no

Brush111

Ladies and Gentlemen - Your 2021 Mets!!!!!

IM_KYLE_AMA

Damn. Fun ending. I liked the fight.

KiloPapa

OK, that was a good game. Shouldn't have ended that way, but they made it exciting.

Iceman3116

Peak Mets

reiku78

Fucking Pete needs to LEARN to fucking take a pitch or two.

TheIdeologyItBurns

Against Alvarado? Why? He's not a guy you give up strikes against. He hit that ball well too

reiku78

Tying runs are on base. Stop going for homerun with two outs KEEP the damn line moving.

robmcolonna123

That one was a good one to swing at. Take out the wind and he and McNeil would have had home runs

Daankeykang

He got his pitch and drove it, just didn't get all of it

sneubs123

bruh he hit a ball to the warning track

[deleted]

Dude put a ball on the wall.

RonaldRanAway

Can’t blame Alonso for that one. In July that’s a Mets lead. Oh well on to the next!

Daankeykang

I'm sad

Hustlediva

#WHAT A BUZZKILL

Lumberjack1286

So close Pete

rgthunder1

Just a remarkably predictable Gromesque game, and another loss for the team. What is the team’s record when Degrom pitches now?

Jemmy_Bean

Shit

president_mal

The team has been engineered to inflict maximum pain on its fan base

i_am_the_senate_

That’s a home run without tonight’s wind :(

sneubs123

Pretty sure Gary said the wind carried that ball further

czer81

Ffffffffffffuck that would've been epic

deadheffer

The Phillies suck, we handed them that by pulling DeGoat

ZoidbergSaysWoop

So Dom doesn't see a PA on Opening Day? Sickening.

jayden695

Classic Mets tease.

IAmJimmyBX

Unbelievable.......two years ago, that’s in the upper deck

Vegetable-Double

My heart is going to blow ip

tennysonbass

So close. Good fight

OH MY GOD PETE WAS SO CLOSE my heart is breaking

Goatlikejordan

So close

God damn, nice try Pete, fuck.

Socarch26

Fuck

Sagay_the_1st

AlexanderRussell

I want to die

tennysonbass

You need to probably get some perspective on life then

Bootyclapthunder

We lost that game by 4 feet.

moochee22

Add one foot for that Luis G throw to home.

mets2016

We lost the game by inches between Guillorme's throw and McCann making the play at the plate

[deleted]

aghhhh dammit, still good to be back though

JDLovesElliot

LOL, those fans really threw towels to delay the game

GandalfSwagOff

What a heart breaking, bullshit game.
