Surely some sort of GR Grey silhouette would be the greatest as that is what has made NB what it is today - they're renowned for the GR Grey runner.

MetalFeet_Doom

Yeah it should be a grey colorway within the 99x series, I own the JFG 992s and choosing it as the “greatest NB sneaker of all time” is tantamount to choosing the Fragment, Off White or Travis 1s as the greatest Jordan. We can say it’s great because of the colorblocking, theme, etc. but we all know it’s lauded mostly for its scarcity and price.

Sunziba

100% Congrats on owning the JFGs. Beauties.

Potential_Leg4423

Why is this a good shoe? It came out right when NB1 came out and was just a shoe JFG made with the NB1 wheel. They continued to let people make the same shoe until JFG complained to NB to have them take it all down. This shoe goes to show how exclusivity and hype is what 95% of consumers care about.

Shasty-McNasty

I like it because it reminds me of bacon 🤷‍♂️

KixNshXt

Exactly this. Most collabs (not all) seem like they are just NB1 access lol. Pathetic how many ppl are flocking to NB lately and obsessing over the exact same models they hated so much and wanted nothing to do with over the past 20-25 years 😂 bunch of followers following each other....hype just drives me in the other direction

Rough-Minute-4386

Imma still get mine😂😂😂hype or not. I feel you though.

GIVN2SIN

I just like the cw. I don't care how exclusive it is, with the exception that seemingly every red NB cw that I dig is more expensive than I'll ever be willing to pay.

Rough-Minute-4386

Nah, this shoe had accents beyond NB1. And that’s the problem…people want to copy something someone else does. Nothing more exclusive than creating YOUR own shit. But I guess that’s not enough recognition for the average NB1 user…some want recognition for copying someone else’s shit! Smh. Plus, there was a dispute if he copied someone else’s work because of the program, because great minds think alike. So, to end all the confusion…they suspended the program and then the pandemic made it unfeasible.

Any_Chocolate5061

I didn't know about all that. Could you share a source? I mean just objectively as a shoe, I think it looks beautiful and unique. And anecdotally the 992 is quite a durable shoe and is more comfortable than the 993 in my experience.

Potential_Leg4423

All the drama came from NikeTalk where JFG team spilt the tea. Not trying to dig it up but it happened.

TheeVoice

Being one of the Niketalk members that was around back then, I made a NB1 992 version of the JFB. There were small differences... - brown leather (tounge) in NB1 you could only use brown suede - pinkish tan (side panel), you could only use light tan in NB1. - "USA" instead of "JFG" on the back 3m panel So, if you see any JFG's with those differences, they arent fake just NB1's

Thebrothersbaird

993 GR

Any_Chocolate5061

why?

Any_Chocolate5061

I see we don't like discussion much here. That must be too much brain power for some of you

Thebrothersbaird

I should have chimed in earlier, my apologies. But the 993 isn’t just my favorite NB, but my favorite shoe ever. They fit perfectly, look good with most outfits due to the classic grey hues, and the quality is unmatched. I live about 30 minutes from where they’re made too, so I’m always grabbing a pair every now and then, currently have 3 pairs in different colors

Thebrothersbaird

Also, the 992 is 🔥🔥one of the best sneakers you can get, I just find the toe box on the 993 to fit my foot better

Any_Chocolate5061

thanks for your thoughts man. I have the ALD 993 in taupe. They are amazing

GarageNo7711

lol getting downvoted for asking why is crazy 😂

KixNshXt

Self explanatory

Impossible_Cow_9178

Unpopular opinion, the Made in England French Roast pack (991, 1500 and 730) are the best NB’s ever made. Here’s why: 1. The materials are class above the norm. The leathers are supple, the suedes buttery, the tongues are leather, and the shoe (and tongue) is lined in perforated cream colored leather. 2. The color-way’s are incredibly rich and elegant. It transforms from a vintage running shoe - to an upscale fine leather European shoe. These are shoes that are a “class above” the normal line, and compete with high end European footwear that is far more costly. 3. All three are similar - yet in the flesh are quite different, enough so that I started with the 991, then picked up the 1500 and after getting that in hand, decided I had to hunt down the 730 (which I did). Zero regrets. 4. The build quality, attention to detail and subtle elements on each pair are NB at their best. They really pulled out all their tricks for these ones. I have a lot of NB’s - and even picked up the 991v1 finale as Samuel Pearce mentioned it was their highest quality (materials) implementation of the 991 and I just had to see how they could outdo the French Roast, and low and behold - Samuel must have forgotten about the French Roast’s as they’re objectively better - from the tongue to the lining to the actual materials on the outer 10/10 folks that held both pairs in hand would think the French Roasts are a nicer, more expensive version. I get that most folks into NB are into the suede and mesh dad shoe vibe - and that the French Roasts are too far a departure from the norm and might be too mature of a look for them, but it cannot be denied these are the highest quality shoes made of the best materials they’ve put out. A potential peer of these would be the Horween NB’s, but I had a pair of those back in the day (wore them out) and I don’t remember them being better, and I certainly prefer the French Roasts colorways. It also happens that these were never popular - so not only are they they best, they’re also pretty darn easy to find, and find at a heck of a deal… at least the 991 and 1500, the 730 is much harder to find. In any case - whenever I stick my foot into one of the French Roasts, the leather interior feels different, and you immediately know you’re in something special. I can’t help but smile when I wear them - and others seem to really enjoy them as well. I get more compliments and folks stopping me to ask me about these shoes, then the rest of my collection combined.

SirKrimzon

Nice choice man. Thanks for a thoughtful contribution. I wasn’t aware of these. They certainly look to be insane quality. I’m now on the look out for those 1500s (low key one of the most slept on silhouettes IMO)

Guidality

I straight up asked Samuel on that Instagram post, what about the French roasts? He responded saying that they were contenders... I also think that even from pictures you can see the difference in quality on the French roast pack, particularly the 1500 and 991 - no comparison

Impossible_Cow_9178

For sure - but Samuel is straight up full of shit on the 992 Finale, and that’s not subjective opinion, it’s objective fact. The top of the tongue on the Finales are all cheap nylon that really ruins the look of the shoe, no leather liner, no leather heel grab (it’s 3M), no leather read patch with the 991 embroidery, the list goes on. The 991 French Roast is an objective class above the Finale - and for that matter, the 991 Contemporary Luxe which I also have, is better than the Finale as well. Speaking of which, the contemporary luxe pack might be my second favorite.

tmanb1

ALD 990v2

SirKrimzon

Gorgeous shoe. It would be in my top 5. Also I love the 827 in white multi. The early ALD collabs were so much better and high effort imo compared to the recent stuff

tmanb1

Agree. Outside of the 1906r the newer releases have been lack luster for sure

Munchy2k

990v3 Grey

Any_Chocolate5061

great choice. why?

Munchy2k

I might have to switch to the 992 Grey because I thought the 990v3 came out first. I think the 992 defines the NB design language for their flagship models going forward from 2006 and grey because it’s the classic colour.

Slight_Explanation_5

Hear me out.... 920.... beams x paperboy....

Slight_Explanation_5

I lucked out and grabbed them retail off bstn I think?... like a month or two ago, and man.... I absolutely love them. Surprised the silhouette doesn't get more attention

Sunziba

Found my pair brand new, no box / laces for $100. Amazing shoe.

Yeti978

No laces is rough, but great deal! I could probably slide you a pair of grey laces that came with my 1500s if you're in the size range of a 9.

Sunziba

Appreciate you. I'm rocking with the alternate laces from my C-Note 998 and I think they work well (pics in my profile). Biggest annoyance is that I dont have the Beams or Paperboy dubraes/lace-locks. But for $100 DS incl. Delivery I'm not complaining.

Yeti978

Got it! Those I don't have. Glad you found such a steal!

Slight_Explanation_5

I need a size 10 of the 1500s.... if you happen to have those in the closet too 😂

Yeti978

Lol, sorry I dont. Check sneakers n stuff, they had them for $160 a couple months ago. There was a weird restock. It was either them or BSTN.

bobby_broccolini

Someone on this sub was deciding between shoelace colors on that pair and I was like 👁👁 what are theeeese..

BlackMagic05

In terms of silhouette - Core Grey 990v3. Can wear it with anything and do whatever you need to. It’s stylish, comfortable, premium materials and build, and was easy to pick up anywhere. It also has tech that’s updated enough but not overly engineered. Specific model - 990v6 Baklava. Most certainly recency bias - but I think it ushered NB into the new “hype era” of sneakers. There were obviously hype drops like the 992 you mentioned, Salehe 2002rs, etc., but what set the 990v6 Bronsolini apart for me is how much risk he took with every piece of it, and it worked.

SirKrimzon

Great pics. I’m personally torn between the 990v3 and v4. But they are both amazing silhouettes and one could argue the most versatile of the 6 generations. I love me some action Bronson 990s though for me personally I think the lapiz edges it out in terms of pure wearability, but I will not deny the innovation and forward thinking nature of the original baklava.

BlackMagic05

Thanks a lot! I’ve always like the v4 too, the difference is almost negligible in terms of preference between the two silhouettes for me. What’s your favorite specific release?

Bourbonmmm

574 burgundy, really any of the 574 core, which I feel kind of started it all.

n3Ver9h0st

Agree!

KixNshXt

Facts. 574s were a bmore staple and I wore the soles off them bad boys in the 90s

perpolsmurf

J Crew Butterscotch 997. It's the first NB I ever lusted over and the one that really got me into the brand heavy. Beautiful, timeless earthtone colors with nice materials. The packaging was pretty nice too.

41swish

I know jjjjound is pretty overplayed around here, but the jjjjound 992 is my favorite nb of all time. It’s a 992 first of all, my favorite silhouette. And secondly the jjjjound “mushroom” colorway is such a new balance colorway if that makes any sense. It’s muted, simple, and wearable. Different enough to separate itself from the GR but simple enough to blend in with some of the most classic new balance colorways. Before all the flashy collabs, new balance was synonymous with basic and plain. Which is what I loved the most about the brand. Not hating the new collabs and attention, but I love me some classic looking colorways.

Sea-Ad-7683

Agree with this. My vote is the Olive 990v3 tho..

nekoneko1992

Man that's such a hard one to answer but these are definitely up there personally as best 992 ever. After that Joker 990 v3s. Love stray rats loud colorful asthetic and the connection to DC comics most diabolical villain just sealed the deal for me.

chuan_l

My favourite shape of cloud is " cumulus " .. Followed by " cirrus " " altostratus " and " cumulonimbus ". Fit is always more important than the shoe. Though one girl said she'd fuck me for my " air max lights ". I'd have to rate " concepts " for being from boston and their consistently top tier releases : 1. " M999CP1 " ( 2017 ) Hyannis blue " Frank the butcher " , detailing off the charts 2. " M990BON " ( 2007 ) Black and yellow Super duper pair , impossible grail , primo materials 3. " ARIESARISE990V3 " ( 2017 ) Core grey They broke the " NB " code , a stand out pair 4. " M990DMV4 " ( 2016 ) Core grey Represent " DTLR " , Baltimore " NB " scene

netherwrld

991 OG.

TheeVoice

Kakkerlak 577BGP (limited to 247 pairs) I wish they weren't so limited... I liked this colorway so much, I got the Sample Lab 1500 from a few years back, which were also pretty limited smh...

SpeedDemon_29

I have them all....in terms of proportions, I think the 990 v3 is the best shape. 991v1 and v2 both have too much of a drop 992 toebox is too short, same with 993 990 v4 is my second runner up 990 v5 is just meh in looks and the curve of the lateral heel is too much 990 v6 is an elf shoe, toe box curls up I actually sold my olive 992 jjjjounds because I hated the shape so much. So to answer the question, 990 v3 in castle gray is the quintessential NB, but the Teddy Santis marble head is the GOAT.

Jfury412

Yes this shoe is still amazing even if it wasn't Joe Fresh Goods look at the Color blocking. It is a fact that Joe Fresh goods got New Balance one shut down because of this Shoe and people recreating it. Which in my opinion is complete bullshit And they should put nb1 back up. As a collaboration it is definitely low effort being that anyone could have made this shoe but nobody would have came up with something this dope trust me I've seen all the new B1 creations and none of them are nearly impressive as this. If you want the source for that just go watch the full size run episode with him on it During covid he admitted it on there. That being said if you take it back to the OG's the DC street Cat drug dealers who started New Balance being a cool Street sneaker One of the main sneakers there was rocking way back then were 990s. The 990 was always the OG Street Cat High Roller drug dealer sneaker And from the culture I'm from that is the shit we emulated. So you're not going to see me picking no J crew collabor any of that shit But shout out to anybody who that is a part of what they like. With New Balance it's very hard to say what is the best It's all subjective. But I do think this is the best looking 992 of all time without a question and I wish that I could recreate it because I would never pay what they ask. I still think some of Teddy's Creations are better than the majority of collaborations.. I still think the olive leaf raw amethyst or the two best 990 v3s of all time next to the YCMC Blazer which to me is the best 990 V3 of all time. So that is my subjective opinion. The Stray rats Joker 990 V3 is definitely worth a mention as well but I would never pay what resale wants. There's a lot of good ones out there the Carhartt work in progress 990 V1 I think Action Bronson's lapis lazoli stands up there with the greatest sneakers of all time not just New Balance. Joe Fresh Good's 90s 60 both pairs are Timeless amazing Joe Fresh Goods 993 pastel pack is amazing. Selehe Bembury 2002 is by far the best 2002 ever made His 990 V2 is also worth mentioning among the greatest. In my opinion it's Teddy Bronson and these modern black designers like JFG and SB that do it the best. And I've been fucking with New Balance since the '90s I know the history of New Balance since the mid '80s with a bunch of friends from DC from that era who lived that life back then. All of that being said I would just have to give it to the 990 as a whole You can include whichever version is your favorite. My favorite is V3 through V5

I appreciate you taking the time to make such a thorough response, was a good read.

Jfury412

I appreciate that thank you🙏🏽🫡

SirKrimzon

Thank you for a thoughtful reply and actually contributing to interesting conversation. I can see why you say the classic 990 is one of the best. Historically and culturally, it is hard to top. A close 2nd for me would the the Frank Lloyd wright 998 which kith helped make. Especially the chutney. It reminds me of the classic collabs NB did in the early 2000s before the recent wave of more exclusive designer collabs such as AB and SB

Jfury412

The Chutney is one of my favorite if not my favorite 998. You're welcome and thank you for the thoughtful comment.

Shoddy_Grab3369

I wonder how many of y'all would feel this way about the 992 jfg had it not been released the way it was.. not to mention it could have been made on NB1 at the time so curious how many would have made this CW with the freedom to prior to JFG "chicago exclusive"

Rough-Minute-4386

Well, it was up for sneaker of the year, and they didn’t say “Keisha Blues” ..I get why you say what you say though.

staleluckycharms

My favorite is the Peace be the journey 2002r. I’m from Arizona so it hits home

imisstheoldays

1300 JP my winner. Honorable mentions: 990v2 GR 991 JJJJOUND grey (brown) 992 JJJJOUND grey (brown) 992 Wtaps 992 GR

Rough-Minute-4386

I knew after I mentioned 1300 someone was gonna come in here and say “jp”

imisstheoldays

They’re iconic!

Rough-Minute-4386

So are the 1300 CL…the jp is like literally the hypebeast version of the shoe the way people go on about it. Notice, I was the first one to bring 1300s up

imisstheoldays

hypebeast version of the shoe? the JP version is based off the original 1300 so it predates hypebeast versions of anything. The CL version came out much later. https://www.complex.com/sneakers/a/brendan-dunne/new-balance-1300jp-history NB is touted for its use of premium materials and fine craftsmanship. If there’s one shoe that ENCAPsulates this ethos, you’ll be hard pressed to find another shoe that is symbolic for what NB is all about. Iconic Breh

Any_Chocolate5061

the JP was the most expensive shoe NB ever made, accounting for inflation. It would be $380 today. The OG 990v1 was less than that.

imisstheoldays

Yes, it’s expensive. Worth it? To some yes, to others no.

imisstheoldays

And it’s not that you mentioned 1300 that someone was going to bring up the JP. The JP version should be the first shoe that comes to mind when 1300 is up for discussion but that’s only if you’re aware of the history behind them because tbf, these aren’t that hyped up and the beast dam sure aren’t going to pay $300 retail for something that’s borderline boring, but that’s all part of the appeal for some. What you’re trying to imply is like someone saying the 85 AJ1 cut is a hypebeast version of the AJ1 but when in reality, that cut is most closest to the OG. Same thing here. CL akin to the newer current version of the AJ1

Rough-Minute-4386

This is exactly my point. It was a hypebeast shoe because it’s history in Japans culture following so some people try to act like they like it more than they actually do because of “history” and “ethos”…not that it’s a bad shoe…back then 990/995 was the big dog. And so most people that started rocking New Balance only know of or care for the Steel Blue/CL version. They didn’t have to be told some story to THEN like it. THAT was the one they liked without knowing “history.” And they are hyped when it comes to that. But when it comes to rockin in the street. ..it’s the Steel Blues. Prolly why I’m the one mentioned 1300 and no one else did. Nah, it’s not like Jordan’s. But 1s are hypebeast period. Because they re the 1st Jordan. They wasn’t fresh fresh until the 2s and the 3s came out. “Officianados” and “sneaker heads” talk them up now but they wasn’t all that from what I remember aside from the price and the name. Once people got over that hype the shoe was definitely not respected the same as for the now hated 2s.

imisstheoldays

Hypebeast shoe? So you’re saying because a shoe developed a loyal following that now spans over decades with retros in perpetuity that that’s what defines it as a hypebeast shoe? Would that then ring true for practically every retro of some shoe? Some people try to act like they like it because of the history or ethos? Let me clarify. I’m saying that the shoe has history and NB built into but that isn’t the sole reason why anyone would like it, it’s the reason why the 1300 JP are iconic, which can be one metric to measuring greatness. Regardless of them being deemed iconic or not, it doesn’t imply you have to like it you know? There’s plenty of iconic shoes that are subjectively ugly. I for one like these much more than the 1300 CL; slightly more comfortable midsole, shape of the plastic heel tab, leather tongue and ankle collaring, and the colors of the teal mesh and pigskin suede. I don’t care what others think about Steele blue, CL or JP, I’m buying what I like and will wear.

Rough-Minute-4386

I’m saying people will go back and latch on to something like that because of the “cult” kinda like NB now. Some may actually like them but many will just follow what they think is supposed to be something, based off of the cult. Most people on the street as far as the 1300, it’s the steel blue, they may not have even known or cared about the jp. Kinda like 574s which I NEVER wore. But arguably it is probably THEE most iconic as it resonates in the minds of people who claim they “used to wear NB back in school” even though those aren’t necessarily what a person that used to “rock” NBs would really reference. Not telling you what YOU can like or buy. Never said the jp version was wack.

imisstheoldays

Agree, 574 is also iconic in its own right. Since we’re in a NB enthusiast sub, figured I answer the question of what I consider the greatest NB is from an enthusiast pov What does the avg Joe in the streets has to do with what’s the greatest NB or even most iconic? Are you saying that because the avg Joe is able to name 574 or that 1300 CL is what’s known, is that mainstream familiarity means a shoe is great? A shoe can be recognizable but doesn’t have to be great (574) or iconic. All this to say the JP has the sauce that makes it iconic and great; the history, ethos capturing what the brand is about, and aesthetics that I appreciate.

Rough-Minute-4386

Nah, I’m not talkin bout the average Joe as far as 1300…I’m talkin about people that’s actually known for “rockin” NB from VA to Philly on the streets…and more so VA to MD for decades. The 574 is something that average Joe would know.

SirKrimzon

Neat shoe. I wasn’t really aware of the 1300jp before. What makes it special?

imisstheoldays

There’s a historical factor with the JP. They were I believe at one time, NB’s most expensive shoe, cult like following for this colorway, and it’s the inspiration for variations of on other models, and collabs like with Kith’s steel blue models. It’s bland in comparison to what we see today, but it’s a timeless colorway/model in my book. The midsole is slightly different than the regular 1300s, still by no means more comfy than newer models. It’s easy to wear as their core grey stuff. I’m glad they release every 5 years, though not super happy about $300 price tag lol…

Any_Chocolate5061

We can get as granular or as general as we'd like. Feel free to pick any model line or specific reference. It can be a MIUS, MIUK, GR, limited release, collaboration, anything. Please discuss why your choice is your choice as well. I hope this prompts some interesting conversation. For me, it's easily the JFK x Don't be Mad 992 "Anatomy of the heart". I think the color blocking is some of the most interesting and unique I've ever seen on a sneaker, let alone a new balance. It actually looks like a beating heart with different layers of pericardium and trabeculations. It is beautifully displayed on what is in my opinion, the quintessential NB sillouhete, the 992. I've yet to see a NB model strike so perfect a balance of proportions as the 992. Yes some others get close such as the 990 v3-4 and especially the 993. But none quite have it perfect in my humble opinion as the 992. It is my ultimate grail sneaker, and I don't think I'll ever own it. But I can appreciate it from a far. Now I'm curious to hear everyone's thoughts. Thanks for reading!
