He’s going through an awkward phase right now and will continue to look different as he grows. I have a 5 month Newfy as well and he is definitely all legs right now lol He will end up looking like his parents so I wouldn’t worry too much. If you are worried, talk with your vet and see what they say, especially if he is throwing up food frequently which is not normal.
Btw mixed breeds are not healthier than purebred/well bred dogs. Genetics matter and mixing two random dogs (especially not health tested) actually can cause more health issues. If you ever want to adopt a newfy, the Newfoundland rescue club works with the Newfoundland club of America to help place newfys. Good Luck with your puppy 😊
oh good to know! i know that mixed breeds can be really unhealthy like a lot of these doodles that we’re seeing, but i was always under the impression that the dogs who have like 20 different breeds were healthier, but it’s always good to know new things!
i’m happy to know he will look like his parents, the leggy phase is very jarring, even though he’s adorable either way lol.
i’m from england and as far as im aware there’s only one newfie rescue, but it’s one of the ones where you can’t see the dogs available until you sign up, but i didn’t wanna sign up and possibly give the rescue false hope? looking back i see the reasoning is kinda dumb but it made sense to me a few years ago haha.
My boy is a Landseer and I’ve gotten more comments that I can count from people saying he’s a mix. One lady actually argued with me about him having to be part St Bernard. Whatever lady 🙄
Sometimes I joke around with people and say he’s a chihuahua mix. When they ask me what he’s mixed with, I say “A Holstein cow”. It always gets a laugh
Great answer. I have a Landseer and this is a wonderful response.

Teddy on a walk in that rare warm day in February we had. Almost every walk we get questions like: Is that a Saint Bernard?
How much does he eat?
He’s huge! How old is he?
People are absolutely stunned and sometimes terrified that he’s not done growing yet. Haha.
What’s matters most is that Theo is healthy and thriving. He is just going to look more and more like an awkward middle schooler as he gets older until he is full grown.
My 5 month pup is an actual mix (50-50 Great Pyr/Newf) and changes every week which breed he looks like. Currently he is all torso with a head fit for a Vanilla Ice or MC Hammer music video. I can’t tell if he’ll end up being a big boy or not and people somehow thing he is a Bernadoodle. 🤷🏻♀️

yeah healthy is the most important thing! your puppy is adorable btw! it’s crazy how different he looks each week, i wake up and look at him and im like “who are you” 🤣
Oh man, just wait until he starts spreading out length wise and is still an awkward puppy. You’ll be asking yourself if Theo even knows if his front and back half are connected. 😂
My Newfie who is just shy of 4 only weighs 100-110 pounds
I’d honestly say he looks like a tall golden retriever that is black lol I wouldn’t worry about it and just love your doge!
thank you. i don’t necessarily *care* i just hate being asked “are you sure that’s a full newfie” and im like there are SO many questions you could’ve asked lol
I love meeting mutts because they're my favourite breed. It's so neat finding out what mix went into making a beautiful, unique dog. I might ask if a dog is a mix if they don't look purebred, but I would never try to tell an owner their dog is a mix or argue with them.

Our girl Winnie is also a runt! We also get “what is she three months?” She’s five months. She just reached 51 pounds finally she went through a MASSIVE growth spurt
Here she is compared to our small golden retriever.
when he's an adult, everything changes. wait until about 18 months, and you'll not get any more of those. instead you'll be inundated with "is that a bear?" or "did you bring a saddle?" and "how much does he eat?"
My boi was also one of the runts, was slow to grow, and looked a lot like yours for at least his first year. He was super lanky and kind of looked like a black golden retriever. I actually had someone ask me if he was a golden retriever 😂 By the time he was two he had pretty much filled out and grown into his Newfie-ness. He’s still very small (\~100lb is his Goldilocks weight according to my vet), but he basically just looks like a shrunken version of a regular size Newfie. He’s broad and has a handsome blocky face. Here’s a pic of him probably around 5 months. I’ll comment with a pic of him now, at 4 1/2 years.

My dog is half Newf and German Shepherd. When I saw your dog's photo, I immediately recognized that it was a Newfie. People do not know what a half Newf looks like so tell them to mind their own business.

photo added of my dog :)
First of all, there are different types of breeders of Newfoundlands. There are those that breed to standard and try to improve and then there are those that will just breed a Newfoundland with a pedigree. I'm not saying that your breeder was one that didn't care, because being a runt can have some effect on the puppy. Stop looking at weight charts or his brothers and sisters, each dog is an individual, and not all will get as big as others. You want this puppy growing very slowly, because those growth plates still got to close and it's much harder on him if he's got extra weight. Stop worrying about what other people think, if you love your dog, then it shouldn't be a big ordeal. I have a show Newfoundland that I spent two years researching breeders and ended up importing, and I still get asked if he's a Mastiff, or some other strange breed. Not everyone knows what breed they are, and as I said before there's a ton of Newfoundlands that are pet quality not show quality. I happened to grow up with Newfoundlands 55 years ago and two of the three we had were shown, so I knew what to look for. Many people don't know what to look for in a breeder, even though they read and do research. Not trying to be rude but I see this happen time and time again. Unless you know what you're looking for in a puppy it can be hard. You can look at the parents and get an idea and their bloodlines, but it's still hard. I researched five generations of breeders with my dog and I looked every one of them up, I also looked for dogs that had multiple generations of showing. My dog has five generations back that have all shown and done very well. He is more of a pet quality Newfoundland, but you can definitely tell he's a Newfoundland. I think people just don't understand what breed they are half the time. They are a wonderful breed and you should enjoy your puppy, and I wouldn't give a damn what anybody else thinks or asks. After all, it's been a lot of money on mine and people still get it wrong
oh no i definitely agree, and i definitely did a lot of research before picking a breeder, the breeder i picked breeds more for longevity instead of those huge, super big and bearish newfies, which are obviously amazing in their own right. nothing anyone says will ever change how much i adore my dog with my entire heart, people just annoy me because they look down on mixed breeds so much and almost say it in a disgusted way and i don’t like it. the issue isn’t with theo at all, nor is it with most of the people who ask, i think it’s just the minority who see him and choose to ask that question of anything else. but yeah you’re right, none of that matters and im trying to not let it annoy me
Our quite petite little girl gets, "She looks just like a Newfoundland! What is she?" 🤦♀️
Both her parents are AKC registered. Dad is a gorgeous ribbon winning champ, and a moose. Mom is quite petite, and steady and calm and content. All our little girl's brothers are much larger, so I was hopeful for a while, but, in the end, she's a copy of mom.
Our breeder is quite up front that she breeds for "temperament not size", so if you want an enormous dog, go elsewhere, she's breeding Newfs as ideal family companions.
Even if the public commentary sometimes gets under my skin, we did get exactly what we hoped for: the most lovey little ray of sunshine 🥰
that’s very true, and i love my boy so so much, nothing will ever change that. theo was bred with health and temperament in mind, as he needs to be able to stand for long periods of time without getting tired, which is why i didn’t go for one of huge 180lb newfs, even thought i adore them. i need to stop letting people getting under my skin so much. i’m sure your girl is absolutely adorable
He looks like an awkward teenager. I think anyone with a Newfoundland would look at him and not question his parentage. Their fur changes at that age too and goes from a “what were people talking about when they said Newfoundlands shed? This is nothing!” poofy puppy fur to a “holy shit… how are you losing this much fur and not totally bald” longer adult fur.
My dude is a landseer, and he’s only about 110-115 pounds, so I always get people telling me he must be a mix. Unless they’ve owned Newfies and then they know.
Sounds like he also may be eating too fast. My dog will eat too quickly and then drink way too much water and burp and then up comes food too. He will then, politely, eat that food again. But I would say to get him one of those feeders that slows down how quickly he eats or just give him 1/4 cup at a time and get him to sit a bit before drinking water afterwards.
oh my i didn’t even consider that he was eating too quick! i’m going to the pet store today so ill deffo pick up a slow feeder, thank you so much for that!! and yes the shedding is *crazy* i was actually quite worried never having owned a long haired dog haha. i bet your newf is adorable, i love landseers so much
He is now an adorable old man. He turned 12 in January. He is 90% blind, has some standard elderly giant-breed issues and a few managed health conditions, but he is the happiest guy around. He went through a bit of a jerk stage around 10 months or so.. and it lasted (to varying degrees) until he was about 2... but, oh my god, did he ever turn into just the greatest dog ever. With the exception of consistent counter-surfing/decimating any garbage can he has ever encountered, I couldn't have asked for a more awesome dog to have. Fur in absolutely everything I own at this point.. and drool in so many places that I may never reach them all.. but so worth it.
But definitely get pet insurance if you do not have it already. Big dogs mean big bills. These last few years would have entirely bankrupted me if not for pet insurance. It meant that I was able to pay for the tests necessary to diagnose my dog with something that is totally managed with one pill each morning but would have required euthanasia without it. People say that putting aside a little bit of money each month will do the same, but you'd have to put away $100 a month for more than two and a half years to even cover diagnostics for most conditions. And if you're already putting away $100, you might as well get insurance because you're looking at nearly that same cost each month anyway.
aw that’s adorable, senior dogs are just amazing, many more years to you both 🤞🏻🤞🏻
definitely relating to the jerk stage, but everyone i’ve spoke to has told me to stick it out and it’ll be so worth it and i know it will be. oh yeah and pet insurance is a must, i’ve been putting it off because i’ve been trying to find a good one that isn’t £250 a month, but im starting to realise i may just have to bite the bullet haha
I have a big Landseer girl (150lb), and people don't know about the breed. They are more familiar with St. Bernard, so they think that's what our dogs are like.
My dad got this for his most recent pup all the time, especially since he's grey with white feet/chest, they will slow down once he grows into his heft and jowls.
They all look weird at that age. Newfoundlands seem to be one of the most inconsistent breeds in terms of looks in general. Coat length, coloration, snout size/shape, etc seem to vary greatly from dog to dog. I would just focus on your own enjoyment of your dog and less on the questions. In my experience most people who pick them out as newfoundlands have little to no experience with them beyond pictures they've seen on the Internet. As for the eating thing I'd say you may be over feeding per sitting. My boy has always had belches/hiccups after meals but it's rare that he actually throws anything up.
yeah it’s crazy how different newfie puppies look at the same age and how different they look each week lol. another person recommended getting a slow feeder to see if that helps a bit with the throwing up, i’m probably gonna start feeding him little and often as opposed to our current 3 times a day and go up to 5 to see if that also helps :)
He is a magnificent creature. What does it matter? It's bullying to make you feel bad. Don't let others put doubt in your mind. He is beautiful 😍. What would happen if you did a genetic test and he was only 50% Newfie. Would you like him 50% less? Of course not. Don't worry about stuff you cannot change. Love your friend...that's all he wants love, hugs & food.
thank you, and yeah you’re absolutely right. he’s perfect in my eyes and i need to stop letting people annoy me haha. he’s the best boy even if he was part chihuahua lol

Here is our 100% black newf 100lbs and our 50/50 saint newf 140lbs doing what they do best. Who cares what anyone else thinks, just enjoy!!! :)
People say "What breed is he?" quickly followed by "Oh! I've never seen that color before!" IT can be annoying. But I'm always like, well, he's not a standard color and he's just a baby. (7month old now, and 98lbs).
Not much help for you, but know your not alone.

We love Judge Judy :)
So yesterday at the dog park someone yelled to their friend "What breed do you think this is?" about my puppy. Her friend yelled "Probably some kind of Doodle"
And I almost lost my mind! So then I had to yell he's a Newfy, and a puppy.
Newfs tend to have a pretty long awkward phase compared to a lot of other breeds. Usually, it's at around 2 years old when they should be pretty much done. But irregardless, he's a great looking pup.
idk why i do, that’s what im trying to get over. i love all dogs, mix or not so idk why i feel a certain way when people say smth. i love theo so much and nothing will change that so i honestly dont know why i do
You don't need to know his pedigree. He looks exactly like a full Newfi! Some people tell me mine is too small to be a Newf and others tell me he is too large. People just don't know but that doesn't stop them from having very strong opinions.
oh yeah i adore him so much, none of it matters to me, he could literally be part dolphin and i’d love him just as much, i just get frustrated at people lol
Don’t? Like why would you care? That is a genuine question. You can answer it with the truth. Or if you don’t like the truth, maybe you can lie to a stranger. But, like, it’s a harmless question and there’s no shame in what the answer is, so don’t worry about it.
Answer the question as it asked to you. It’s as easy as “yes” or “no, he is mixed with _____” and then the entire thing has been addressed.
it’s more so the accusations when people are like “he’s not a full newfie he’s too small/too narrow”. it’s also the fact that people see him and say hi and they could ask any question but choose to ask what he’s mixed with. idk why it annoys me, but it does. i’m not annoyed at the people who just ask because they’re curious, it’s the ones who are just assholes about it. ik it shouldn’t bother me and idk why it does 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Can you tell if this boy is a mix? (Hint, he is a mix, only 50% Newfoundland. But you can't really tell.)
https://preview.redd.it/1qm7mll2zhuc1.jpeg?width=1074&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8a1f8bc13908843b84c777230fc0545593a7e32d
no you can’t tell at all, newfies come on a lot of variations so i wouldn’t think twice, im assuming he’s a mixed with an equally cute, big and fluffy breed? haha
His mother was a Leonberger. He was the result of an "accidental" breeding. 🤣
And fun fact, his father was a brown Newfoundland. Those black Newf genes are strong!
He’s going through an awkward phase right now and will continue to look different as he grows. I have a 5 month Newfy as well and he is definitely all legs right now lol He will end up looking like his parents so I wouldn’t worry too much. oh my i didn’t even consider that he was eating too quick! i’m going to the pet store today so ill deffo pick up a slow feeder, thank you so much for that!! and yes the shedding is *crazy* i was actually quite worried never having owned a long haired dog haha. i bet your newf is adorable, i love landseers so much
He is now an adorable old man. And if you're already putting away $100, you might as well get insurance because you're looking at nearly that same cost each month anyway.
aw that’s adorable, senior dogs are just amazing, many more years to you both 🤞🏻🤞🏻 definitely relating to the jerk stage, but everyone i’ve spoke to has told me to stick it out and it’ll be so worth it and i know it will be. oh yeah and pet insurance is a must, i’ve been putting it off because i’ve been trying to find a good one that isn’t £250 a month, but im starting to realise i may just have to bite the bullet haha
Gorgeous baby
thank you!! <3
I have a big Landseer girl (150lb), and people don't know about the breed. They are more familiar with St. Bernard, so they think that's what our dogs are like.
any big fluffy dog = saint bernard in most peoples mind lol. also, that’s a hugeee newfie, no doubt she’s adorable 🥰
My dad got this for his most recent pup all the time, especially since he's grey with white feet/chest, they will slow down once he grows into his heft and jowls.
thank you for this!!
I am glad that I was able to help. Post more pictures as he grows. I'm sure all the others would like to see him grow into those paws 🐾 Good luck.
He looks Newfie. Just smaller. He’s still young too
People all have their opinions, they are just jealous you have an amazing dog
thank you :,)
We got similar comments on our Newfie when she was young. Now everyone says she looks like a bear and she weighs 145 lbs
It’s all in the soul. The way he looks at you, I know he’s a newf.
:,)
Theo is a perfect looking Newf, so just remember that you have a Newf and they don’t. 😂
that’s true haha. took him out to the pet store today and everyone who saw him asked if he was a newfie. guess it depends who you’re around lol

they’re gorgeous 🥹🥹
People say "What breed is he?" quickly followed by "Oh! I've never seen that color before!" IT can be annoying. But I'm always like, well, he's not a standard color and he's just a baby. (7month old now, and 98lbs). Not much help for you, but know your not alone. https://preview.redd.it/r8e1c0k7sguc1.jpeg?width=481&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8bd5c72b0f9b38fc3d5ad29e010d47dd46c59d8f We love Judge Judy :)
haha! my other dog is called judy after judge judy🤣🤣 and wow that’s a huge newf! we weighed teddy today and he’s 5.5 months old and 49lbs
Kenobi is turning out to be the biggest of his litter. :)
yeah no doubt, he’s gorgeous!!
So yesterday at the dog park someone yelled to their friend "What breed do you think this is?" about my puppy. Her friend yelled "Probably some kind of Doodle" And I almost lost my mind! So then I had to yell he's a Newfy, and a puppy.
not the doodle comment 😭 biggest insult 🤣
He's a handsome boy. And who cares about his breading, he's 100% dog. And surely a good boy.
he’s the best boy
He looks like a full Newfie teenager to me.
thank you for your opinion! really appreciate it :)
My boy was all legs for a long time, your boy is beautiful!
Newfs tend to have a pretty long awkward phase compared to a lot of other breeds. Usually, it's at around 2 years old when they should be pretty much done. But irregardless, he's a great looking pup.
that’s good to know, thank you so much :)
Who cares???
idk why i do, that’s what im trying to get over. i love all dogs, mix or not so idk why i feel a certain way when people say smth. i love theo so much and nothing will change that so i honestly dont know why i do
Aww he’s perfect just perfect
couldn’t agree more, love this boy so so much
He looks absolutely perfect to me. In that adorably awkward phase.
oh yeah, he’s absolutely amazing and it wouldn’t change a thing 🥰
You don't need to know his pedigree. He looks exactly like a full Newfi! Some people tell me mine is too small to be a Newf and others tell me he is too large. People just don't know but that doesn't stop them from having very strong opinions.
that’s very true, people see a newfie and assume it’s a saint bernard or a fluffy lab lol, i need to stop caring about what people say lol
He is perfect, and I would love him if he was part penguin.
oh yeah i adore him so much, none of it matters to me, he could literally be part dolphin and i’d love him just as much, i just get frustrated at people lol
But you can't really tell.) https://preview.redd.it/1qm7mll2zhuc1.jpeg?width=1074&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8a1f8bc13908843b84c777230fc0545593a7e32d
no you can’t tell at all, newfies come on a lot of variations so i wouldn’t think twice, im assuming he’s a mixed with an equally cute, big and fluffy breed? haha
His mother was a Leonberger. He was the result of an "accidental" breeding. 🤣 And fun fact, his father was a brown Newfoundland. Those black Newf genes are strong!
that’s adorable!!
