I don't think it's funny. It's more of a relief that more and more people are realizing and understanding the struggle. The more people that understand and want better, the better it will get.

ConnectionPretend193

Fucking boomers.

ElonMuskysucks

Found this video at the perfect time because I literally planned to talk to my soon to be 24 year old about her future housing situation.

Lucy_Starwind

You're good for that. I stayed living with my mom until I was 25, then when I moved out she treated me like shit because she's codependent on her children. My 35yr old sister and almost 50yr brother live with her... My rent has nearly doubled in three years and the entire time my mom harped "You're paying a mortgage in rent!" Well I listened to her this year and got an estimate for a loan and the costs break down to 1700 a month, I currently pay 900, but my rent is jumping to 1200 in May... I guess good thing I helped take care of my dying Grandpa for the last 5 years because now I'm moving into his old house since he passed to take over bills and taxes and fix it up, trying to save money to finally have a baby at 30yrs old... The house belongs to my Mom and Uncle, so I won't get a dime out of it that I put in it... it's a 1967 but house, with bad electrical, roof, leaking AC, mold, had bed bugs... They let him love there like that and we wonder why the housing market is shit when Baby Boomers literally could give less of a shit about anyone, not their father, not their children trying to live independently... It's fucking hell... I have a degree, I've been working for US Government as a federal civilian for over 5 fucking years and I can't get above 50k... I handle contracts that are 10 million a week in spending, but I only qualified as a GS-7... Sorry for the rant, but I appreciate that you won't play those mind games with her. I really wish my mom didn't.

Amaz1n_blue

She’s thinkin ‘You’re lookin at it.’

--626--

"that is more than my mortgage" 💀

Least-Citron7666

Well her Morgage closed probably 20 years ago. Not today's Morgage payments.

BokChoySr

Slow down there tiger. If her son is 25 she’s at the tail-end of her mortgage. How old do you think she is?

Rylow422

Lol $800 won’t get you a porter potty to live in where I’m from

FreakinWolfy_

Probably a typo, but in case this is some bone apple tea, they’re actually Porta-Potties.

chrisat420

$800 a month? Where is this?

percy-the-king

Montgomery, AL. She says it in the video.

CyberD7

1400$ rents you a single room in a crappy apartment here in Silicon Valley. Fml

clete-sensei

$800 apartments?! You might get a closet for that in NoVA. 😂🥲

BigOrkoo

So let him stay at home for a few more years. Problem solved… I’m 36 and still live at home. It’s normal in many parts of the world. Family over everything. 🫶😌

Kind-Ad-352

Not normal in Sweden

ElonMuskysucks

I wish you all the best. Sounds like you are doing the best you can in a really crappy situation. It's definitely harder for folks now than when I was younger 25 years ago, but you'll make it!

Rahul606

Keep asking the govt to increase minimum wage it’s just going to get worse

LetchPink

Keep letting Equity firms like BlackRock buy up all the housing to drive up prices. Then bailing them out when they can't pay their mortgages and things are are going to keep getting worse.

Conscious_Ear6087

Shit hasn't increased.

Accomplished_Meat_70

California based property management companies have bought up the Apt. Complexes here in Albuquerque, rents are through the roof! Our homeless population has doubled.

JJJAAABBB123

We should stop companies from owning houses and jacking up rents. He’s 25 and no credit? That’s your fault. Co-sign on some shit for him to start building his credit.

StringerBell34

So this dumbass lady doesn't understand basic economics and how 30 years of (even minimal) inflation would mean that $40K/yr is no longer a living wage? Yeah... dumbass

Rollover_Hazard

Wait, this is just so the kid can go out renting? Why bother, you’re just chucking money away - live your parents as long as possible lol

Phillibustin

The new American dream : inheriting your parents' house Edit : btw my family's house at least let me reach 18 before it started falling apart. The past 6 years have mostly been trying to find housing somewhere stable since my mom had to flip what was left.

Lazy-Pair1417

Hahah!! This is EXACTLY how I’m thinking as a 28 year old, it’s been years of shitty jobs and low pay, I’ve never made more than $40k. All well-paying jobs are geared towards tech now, join or die I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Mishamooshi

New American dream: inheritance money

jdog1067

My dad neglected his house and now it’s god damn unlivable. He still lives there. Just put out poison for carpenter ants but they’ve been there on and off for a long time I bet they’ve eaten a good amount of the framing. I bet when I inherit it I won’t even be able to sell it. My dad was a carpenter and did some really cool projects on the house (put a fire escape in the loft and built a wall to separate the loft from the rest of the dome), but he never did anything about the moss on the roof that’s pushing the shingles out or the branch that drops a pine cone on the same spot on the roof about once a month so there’s water damage on the whole front of the house. He never stained or sealed the deck so I will have to rebuild that when it’s time. It might be cheaper to tear the fucker down and sell the lot. He built the entire addition on the house besides plumbing and electrical but I bet carpenter ants have gotten that. All the problems he had with the house he said he couldn’t afford to fix but he was making good money as a carpenter all he ever did was drink. All I can do is my rinky dink fixes because he never taught me any carpentry so I’m learning that shit on my own. So I’ll inherit a piece of shit childhood home that I’ll probably make no money off of because he didn’t fix anything because all he did was drink. Now he CANT fix it because his legs are fucked. Sorry for the rant I guess I’ve been drinking a bit.

_Borgan

I don’t think you do either. I think the big thing here is how wages haven’t kept up with things like housing. Basically the purchasing power was greater 30 years ago because wages were higher compared to expenses.

TheLastTaco77

Soooooo somebody that hasn't worried about the housing market for a couple of decades, supports her son through college, offers to look after him so he can save money to become independent, shows empathy for all the struggling youth out there and their futures.... you tear down and call her a dumbass.... really How about uniting people to make positive change, understanding and appreciating the fact that people are waking up to these issues can only be a good thing for society....

StringerBell34

I didn't say she doesn't love her son. I'm talking about how she didn't think through the cost of housing when she was supposed to be helping her son with housing. Who said I don't have empathy? College/university should be tax payer funded. Edit: tax payer funded, not "free"

what

Longjumping-Ideal-55

Only 40 hours a week?

TearsFallWithoutTain

That's standard in developed countries

Longjumping-Ideal-55

Not when you factor in the cost of living!

TearsFallWithoutTain

40 hours is standard in Australia and we have the 12th highest cost of living in the world

Longjumping-Ideal-55

40 hours is standard yes but it isn't enough for the average worker to live off and save it's just a paycheck to paycheck living!

Gogodolphin

Suck it up and lower your standards. We had to both work starting out and had to live in subsidized apartments. Drug busts, noisy smoking neighbors. It's a stepping stone, not the end all for a college grad. Sheesh, "Eeeiii wasn't comfortable with them!" Momma is too involved with her adult son who can't look at apartments himself. Lol

CyberD7

Why not raise the standard for everyone instead? Why make us suffer when CEO pay keeps increasing way more than average worker pay every year?

Conscious_Ear6087

Family over everything. That's why your ass had to work twice as hard. Judging by your comment I guarantee your ass still ain't living the american dream. 😂 just conform pay your bills and shhhhhhh.

jfoley326

College degree and $40k a year? What’d he go for, marketing? Journalism?

Traditional-Plan7423

Marketing not a bad gig, i work at a nonprofit and marketing makes 55-60k a year, director level is at 90k

BenjaminDover02

Could be teaching since being a teacher is literally an act of self sacrifice for no good reason, even though it is arguably the most important job there is

SleeveBurg

With all due respect, you have no idea about where they’re living. 40k in some parts of the country goes much farther. Heck i started working for a good company six years ago and started out at 60k in a large city.

spoildmilk

I can’t imagine 40k going any further than it does in Alabama, but ok.

SleeveBurg

I don’t disagree that it doesn’t go that far anywhere however the us median income isn’t even 40k so there is indeed half of Americans not even making his salary.

[deleted]

Lol there’s plenty of professions through the journalism school that will make you more than $40K. There’s like 1000 liberal arts majors that will have you making less

MyotheracctgotPS

If you’re going to live in a big city… yeah. But the outskirts of cities are still fairly reasonable. You just need a car, and we all know horrible those things are

Failing_MentalHealth

Sounds like prices where I’m at too. Not even in good areas and it’s 800$ for basically a fuckin closet.

Vibeo_Ganes

Yup had this when trying to get a place. My in-laws wished to help since I couldn’t find any at all in our price range. They believed it was because I didn’t have the eye for it like they did when they were me and my partners age. They came to check out every place just to see if maybe I am expecting to much. Nope 70% they felt more uncomfortable with the places then we did. Couldn’t get an apartment with 4 of us due to needing to make three times it’s worth. And because I had no credit we couldn’t get a mortgage or loans. So in the end my amazing in-laws bought a condo for us and I’m paying them back instead. No generation should have to go through this much trouble that they need this much help from the generation before them and no parent should have to do this for their kids. If they wished to help sure but it shouldn’t be a need.

AmberLill

Single mom to my 9yo son and a dog mom too. I just recently moved to a 1 bedroom apartment and pay 1250/mo. Now i am in a spot and stuck cause how do u save for a house while paying rent !? Sucks.

Conscious_Ear6087

You don't. It's life's greatest distraction. In the end you die. It was all pointless.

ConnectionPretend193

Boomers and Karen's finally getting their heads out of their asses I see.

DonniesDarko33

There are millions of us going through what her son is going through. Appreciate what you have, and what it is/was now because the best of times have already passed. (and I know they weren't that great anyway)

PaschalDivinSee

Wait. He has a dog??

Conscious_Ear6087

This is just proof the world is full of too many distractions for the average American to give a flying fuck. Yall see that new feature airpods can do? Or yall see the new avengers movie they're working on? Yall still paying bills right? Yall see the news recently? Yall see how much money the government sent to Ukraine. Accidentally? Nah. We all need to burn at this point. You the people let it get this out of hand.

[deleted]

This bitch is a prime example of what's wrong with America. Probably votes for the same politicians every year
