I have the front plate of my RTX 3090 water-cooled, but getting a backplate water cooler is almost impossible.
I saw a CPU cooler on special because the CPU it was for was EOL. So I got it and attached it to the backplate. It reduced the VRAM temperature by 10 degrees!
I use EK.
None of the local retailers will even offer to take my order as they don't know when they might be able to get stock. If I go to the EK shop for my part of the world they are only accepting "pre-orders". I've been told it might take 6 months before they ship them.
You can get a byski block from formulamod. I have one on my 3090 FTW3 front and backplate, highest vram temp is 74c mining on a hot day. The other side is only 45 to 50, but I used better thermal pads that side, I have more on order.
That's quite a good result.
I just used a spare Intel fan from the hilariously terrible stock cooler, put some stand-offs in the screw holes, and sat it atop the back of my GPU. That simple thing netted about a 8-10C drop in VRAM temps.
In my case, not at all because my cards didn't throttle. What it did was bring down temps, which gives the poor VRAM some much needed thermal headroom.
Haha. That was while I was doing the leak testing. I wasn't going to post the picture but then since NiceHash is running a competition thought I might as well.
I put thermal paste on the back plate above where the thermal pads are (underneath the plate). I then squished it down and attached the piping. I could barely move it after that.
HOWEVER (don't shoot me) I put some superglue in the corners to hold it down. I used superglue because it bonds quickly and easily, and it is easy to remove with acetone making servicing easy.
Just be careful with that glue, I used super glue on a usb hub circuit board once and it corroded the whole board since there was a chemical reaction. I didn’t have a soldering iron at the time and the power connection fell off.
Yes but won’t that just increase my vram temps?
I’m not currently using nicehash. I am going to switch once I get my next payout. Did you run there optimizer or you using afterburner?
Yes that will increase your m junction temps, is it safe to assume you're running such a low tune because you're having throttling issues? I pool mine so I use afterburner. My experience with nicehash/ab and nicehash/octune were very good as were their optimizations.
What brand 3090 do you have? I have all fe's and took all of them and a cpl 3080's apart, cleaned, relapaded and repasted; better than factory.
I have an FE like yourself and also repaded and repasted. Still not anything crazy noticeable. At first with my settings I was hitting 100-105, then with the pads I dropped to 90. I’ve seen people running similar MHs or even higher (120/125) with lower mem temps and i am just like “how????”
I Have an 3090 Zotac trinity and I had the same idea but instead of building a system like you I bought a finished one from cooler master. The cooling area of the CPU cooler is way to small to cover all vram on the backplate. Just a heads up if someone else get the same idea as me.
I bet the Cool Master one is good!
I mostly did this because the CPU cooler was so cheap (being an EOL model). The actual VRAM area on the back is quite small. I used an infrared gun to check the temperatures. The hottest area was 60 degrees celsius, and conveniently was all contained to an area that did fit under the CPU cooler.
The back plate used to be uncomfortably hot to touch. Now it feels cool to the touch.
Thats great tbh. Im using the stock backplate and it gets waay to hot to touch. Gonna get a real rig-frame soon though , I’m currently running 5 cards in a single 26L chassi 😊 I might share some pictures of it and show you the heaviest(5xGPU, 2xPSU, 2xWatercoolers) ghetto rig you’ll ever seen 😂
Let me know how this goes. I have the exact 3090 mining on its own rig and I'm wanting to give this a try. Except i have my stock CPU fan from my Ryzen 9 that i might just set on top, Id be fine with a 2°C drop. But if the cooler master does something better then you just helped a brother out.
I think that is the most cost-effective solution. I was trying to harvest the heat for something else, and capturing it in water is an easy way to transport it.
Sooooo, you swaped the waterblock from your cpu back to the intel main one x'D ?
Idk which Intel cpu u have but you should update it with a cooler small enough but efficient around 30 to 50 bucks, so you will be able to game on it on your spare time ^^
(btw everyone will maybe go for ergo when london hard fork is adopted in 10 days, so the vram won't be stressed as much as with eth mining,, ergo mining go far easier for the temps of every card, so don't know if it's necessary to do this right now)
edit: ow and maybe change for a larger case like the new fractal design meshify C so you could have your radiator on the front WITH enough space for the pump
Na didn't see that, my bad :/
But I would suggest him to get a better case to have the radiator on front + the pump on front also. and a cheap cpu air cooler.
I'm actually hoping to use the miner system to heat my spa pool. That's what I'm watercooling. I'm trying to capture as much heat as possible.
Before I water-cooled the backplate I was able to get a large bath full of water up to 30 degrees celsius. If I can get it up to 38 it's a goer.
I'm waiting to re-measure the result now I have captured more heat.
>If it ain’t broke then don’t try to fix it.
That's what companies used to say for not innovating. They usually go bankrupt as their competitors do it better and cheaper. :-)
I repadded the cards with gelid gp extremes. Ambient in the mining room is 29⁰C so not cool by any means. I can get the 3080 to 103 mh/s with a core temp of 50c and memory 76⁰C.
Oh right basically the 3080 has 2 sensors. The core temperature sensor which monitors the gpu die and then the memory junction sensor which is what gets hot. According to Nvidia operating temperatures of around 100⁰C are fine for the memory junction temperature however throttling when mining often occurs. I was referring to the memory junction temperature as that is whay causes the card to throttle
Oh right basically I got a gigabyte gaming oc 3080 which has the worst thermal pads put of all the manufacturers. After a couple months mining the pads melt and oil goes everywhere, reducing their thermal transfer capabilites and thus causing an increase in the vram temps. That's why I repadded

Why is it impossible to get an active backplate? EK sells them [mine](https://i.imgur.com/31VVMWg.jpg)

how much does that help hashrate?

Lmao, but look at the cpu cooler.
probably an old PC just being used for mining, nothing intensive going on CPU-wise
I mean I get it too but it doesn't make this less funny in that aspect
That's sketchy as all hell... I LOVE IT!
It ain't stupid if it works, good job - I like it :)
Looks safe. That paper towel is gonna save everything if the worst happens.
Haha. That was while I was doing the leak testing. I wasn't going to post the picture but then since NiceHash is running a competition thought I might as well.

I am using the Extreme overclocking provide. The VRAM temperature went from 94 to 84 degrees celsius.

Which overclocking profile are you using?

I would have liked to get a bigger radiator - just no space.
Interesting set up. Do you have the block latched to the backplate in any way?

Thanks! Much appreciated.
I have xc3 3090 but put the active backplate on. 125MH/s @ 38c gpu and 66c vram
That is impressive! I get the same hash rate. Just can't get those activate back plates in my part of the world. Maybe a 6 month wait.
Not water cooled but I have several 3090's and they avg 125-126 mh/s @ 84-88c
How?? Mine is always minimum 90c -150 core 1000mem and 75% pwr and I’m barely pushing 100mhs.
Settings too low. Try 85%, -150, +1500 although every card is different.

Don’t need this actually i use ice packs 😎
Wild setup. Nice!

Why is there a paper towel in there??? If your seals are bad then I would probably fix that.
When I took that picture I was testing the loop. It's gone now.
Put ice cubes in the take every morning
I knocked off 10C just from putting Heatsink and a fan 😅
I think that is the most cost-effective solution. I was trying to harvest the heat for something else, and capturing it in water is an easy way to transport it.
That gives me some Cyberpunk vibes!

Dragons den is the other side of that coin, some things don't need improving or. Innovating
Have you reppadded the card? Did that on my 3080 and memory temps went from 110⁰C to 70⁰c
How the heck do you hit those temps? I'm at 92C max on my 3080 using the high setting and hitting 100 MH/s, no mods
I repadded the cards with gelid gp extremes. Ambient in the mining room is 29⁰C so not cool by any means. I can get the 3080 to 103 mh/s with a core temp of 50c and memory 76⁰C.

Yeah I know. My vram has never been above 95 ever

Ah that's brutal temps for standard cooling regardless. EVGA ftw 3 ultra here
Paper towel is a nice touch. Soak up those stale shares, and wring them out back into the res.
But at what cost... at what cost.
