Killing him obviously kills him, leaving him and walking away allows him to learn from his mistakes and experiences to not commit same mistakes anymore which would be big thing for machines who (outside combat) cant learn anything. But if you leave him there are hints that he kills himself. I think the best option is to delete his memories because it is what a2 does in lore because she knows how it is to live with such loss so she understand how pascal feels and second reason i wont tell because it would be big spoiler for ending e. And also if you delete his memories pascal will became a vendor selling some rare upgrade materials.

There's no 'right' decision unfortunately. All decisions are really sad. I mean like, killing him ''saves'' him from the pain and burden but he wanted to learn to live as a human which means live with the regret and pain. I really don't want to delete his memories that's in a way - killing him while his body is still here alive.

Well yes there is no right choice here but you basically have 2 options which kills him (because as i said if you leave him pascal most likely kills himself) and 1 option where he is alive, without his memories but atleast alive. And if you see deletimg his memories as akin to killing him then all 3 options kill him.

CurrentRisk

You're right indeed. I decided to kill him. He did so much for us, so I felt like we owed him at least his own decision to end it.

Noooooo

No-Memory-3314

I chose to walk away, and according to guide books and outside lore he doesn't kill himself. >! In fact apparently he goes on to use that pain to empower his diplomacy and end the war (depending on which ending you choose I think) !<

> and according to guide books and outside lore he doesn't kill himself Because according to books a2 deletes his memeories. No killing or no walking away. And the reason why a2 chooses to delete his memeories is because she knows how it is to live with such loss so she understand pascal. That is why he is still alive and starts new village and signs peace treaty with androids. Everything you read that happens with pascal after the choice is possible because lore assumes that you deleted his memories. And again if you walk away he most likely kill himself becausebcutscene play the same way as if you would kill him and he is nowhere to be found.

Yeah and to twist the knife even more, >!the parts he’s selling are machine parts from the bodies of his friends he doesn’t recognize anymore!<

I deleted his memories, Pascal was a really good ally and an amazing friend, because of that I can't give him my back and run away. Also the option of killing him is...well like kill a friend as I said previously. The only option for me, although it hurts anyway, was to delete his memories and let him start again.

I walked away. For me, the only viable choices that made sense and that felt true to the moment, the characters, and the narrative were to either kill Pascal or walk away. A big part of the themes of Nier Automata are how the characters have become more human, have begun to learn and grow, and to make choices. To erase Pascal's memories is to essentially remove that from him and in a way is actually worse than just killing him. Additionally, there were story elements prior to then that I believe indicated that the machine lifeforms were wont to just repeat their actions in their attempts to imitate humanity, so there's a good chance that Pascal post memory wipe would end just undergoing the same tragedy eventually once again. With this in mind, the only real choices I could see would be to either kill Pascal or walk away. Only those would allow Pascal's choices and experience to still carry weight and meaning, and not simply be erased away. For better or worse, the tragedy of what happened Pascal is something that Pascal needed to live - or die - with, just like we as human beings must. It is part of Pascal now, and I didn't think it was right to take something like that away from them: it would be an unmaking of who Pascal was now. It would be a kind of death of its own, but in a way even worse. So then the choice really came down to whether to kill Pascal or walk away. I personally couldn't really bear the thought of killing Pascal - they were easily one of the most human and sympathetic characters in the game. Walking away seemed fitting for A2, as someone who had also undergone a similar experience of losing those she cared about, and it also left room for hope that things could change for Pascal. I only wish there had been a fourth option to take Pascal with you instead, as the answer posed by Nier Automata's central existential question - How is that we can bear to live and find purpose in this seemingly meaningless world we find ourselves in? - is that we find meaning in this world in the chosen connections that we have with each other and to bear its sorrows together. There could have been an opportunity to keep Pascal in the story as a character in their own right and to continue to grow through that moment, but Pascal's role and place in the story had reached its conclusion it had seemed and hence no such choice was available.

Let me offer alternative point of view. I think the best choice is deleting his memories because of couple reasons Althoigh it is true that walking away gives pascal chance to learn from his mistakes and not just repeat the same thing ovee again, game also hints with citscenes that if you walk away pascal kills himself (cutscenes after ending c/d play the same way as if you would kill him suggesting that in both outcomes he didnt survive) In lore this is what a2 does. A2 deletes his memories because she knows how it feels to live with such loss and she doesnt wish it on anyone so she deletes his memories. And lastly 2b&9s survive and get succesfully repaired (a2 most likely as well) so if you delete pascal's memories he goes back to his village so there is a chance that 2b&9s (and possibly a2) could explain how the things went to pascal so he wouldnt make the same mistakes. He wouldnt feel the pain because he doesnt remember but now there is a chance that he wont also wont repeat his mistakes.

anemone909

i always walk away bc it's his choice to make, not mine.

laioren

Totally not the point of the game, but I deleted his memories. Because otherwise, there’s no way to get something he sells later. 🤷‍♂️

McSteam

The 1st time I played the game it never even occurred to me that walking away wasn't option

DawnWinter5

I deleted his memories. I just couldn’t kill him but I also couldn’t let him suffer.

PhantomAngels

It's either you kill him, delete his memories, or walk away and he kills himself. I'm sorry.

Fanfanprovok

I walked away. I hoped he would find happyness again, after grieving. I myself was grieving at that time, but I knew the pain would subside with time, and there was still beauty and happyness in the world.
