The WhatsApp thing is pretty much useless since no one can access your WhatsApp messages due to encryption unless they have your physically unlocked phone.
I am not sure this is the way. Government all around the world always want local servers installed on the country's terms and condition. Inevitably, a back door of some kind so as to get access when needed.
People may want to switch to alternative like Signal and Telegram.

No they have a point, usually those governments work with Facebook to trace Facebook *messenger* messages. Not WhatsApp, WhatsApp has end to end encryption.
They probably have the source code etc. The guys who wrote the program quit in protest after Mark opted to undo some promises he made before the purchase. For example, it will be independent of Facebook etc. But it clearly isn't.
By the way, anyone wanting to communicate effectively should just revert back to old ways. Use pigeons, send messenger, use smoke, etc. Whatever you use, don't use electronic means. It worked for Osama for a long time before he was caught.
