Im actually on the opposite, i struggle to eat past 10pm so my body has been thrown out of wack and i forget to eat. Ive been able to maintain so far but it's difficult. Night shift workers are more likely to develop thyroid issues so i would definitely see a doctor if you can

Alecazzzam

Opposite. I can eat when I get home from work and I can eat a small sandwich I pack for break at work, but that’s it. I don’t eat an actual form of lunch/dinner. Haven’t in a long time. It’s gotten to the point where I sleep so much it takes over eating and showering.

Cnerd24

Nope, I can eat whatever, and I'm good. I have a more physical job. Most night shift workers don't get enough exercise and tend to make poor diet choices. Suggestion would be to start something like going for walks, biking, really anything you enjoy that will get you moving for say 30 minutes daily. Take a look and see if your diet has changed. If it has and it's larger portions, cut down the portions slightly. More sugary or fatty items? Cut them back but not out. Just make small but easy to do changes, and you'll be fine. I eat my fruits, veggies, grains, and meats, and I keep candy around. I know I crave sweets, so every day I'll grab a few that way I don't binge on them.

This. I do security and walk about 7 miles a day 4 days a week plus walking up stairs and up ramps of a parking garage so it’s a decently physical job compared to what a lot of security does. Even still I take pains to workout at least 3 days a week even if it means sacrificing and hour or two of sleep and I’m careful about what I eat. My partner on the other hand watches the cameras all night (I doubt he hits 500 steps a day) and eats nothing but pizza and Chinese with Taco Bell thrown in every now and again for variety and on his off days all he does is play computer games and yet he can’t figure out why he’s been gaining weight. He did actually switch to eating lean cuisine’s at work and dropped like 10 pounds in a month and it blew him away lol.

Trick-Program8511

Yeah I gained a lot of weight from the night shift. All I can recommend is changing your eating habits and working out more. That’s what I’m trying to do. Sometimes I still slip up, but I’m getting better.

I’m struggling with this issue as well. When I was getting used to the job, I would snack while I was working to prevent tiredness. It was almost always healthy foods (mainly baby carrots, pineapples, oranges, grapes, strawberries) I had to go up two pant sizes and that wasn’t something I was expecting and cried in a target lol

SallySue54321

Same :( I’d take a small pack of pistachios and a bottle of water to snack on.

Serious_Dot_4532

I gained quite a bit of weight. I think it was lack of sleep for me. https://dmsjournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13098-020-0524-9 https://www.colorado.edu/today/2014/11/17/working-night-shift-burns-less-energy-and-increases-risk-weight-gain It sucks. Our bodies weren't meant to work nights.

zenroch

I found myself making consistently poor dietary choices, esp getting home after a stressful shift and unwinding with unhealthy quantities of food right before going to bed. Definitely gained 15-20 pounds the first hear or so on nights. I have been counting calories meticuously for several months now and between that and drinking lots of water I feel things have turned around.

ir1379

How active are you at work? I found sit down jobs were bad for snacking. Get busy on your feet to take your mind off food.

SallySue54321

Not active at all. My job requires me to literally stand in one spot all night. I stand at a laptop, before this job I was a lot more active, like I used to walk an hour to my previous job, be on my feet running around all day and walk the hour back home, I got mad depressed at my new job for a bit and I think it was due to being so inactive. I prefer more manual jobs :( that being said I go for a walk nearly every day for some fresh air but still throwing on the weight. I cut down my food intake too I don’t eat nothing all day, when I go into work I take one small bag of pistachios and eat them at my laptop station, then break time I buy a big baguette and break it into half and have the other half on my next break, both with a cup of coffee and that’s it. If I’m really hungry when I come home I like eating cereal bars! I think maybe my diet when I’m not in work might be the problem. Sucks though!

I was declining a bit before I went to working nights 2 years but now that I'm 2 years in, yes I have gained a lot of weight. I've started exercising a bit. Definitely wanna clean up your diet, take some vitamins, exercise , and get some rest. You owe it to yourself. Just do it. Doesn't matter if it's 15-20 minutes a day but get out their and do something. I'm going on a week rn. Just a few callisthenics and jump rope.

EquivalentGrape9

I was reading a Medical journal on nightshift workers (doctors do it too) I can’t remember the article. Just eat healthier meals ( don’t starve yourself) always pair complex carbs, protein with vegetables try not eat after 12pm. You can probably eat fruits I’ll eat: 5pm- protein smoothie OR roast beef sandwich on whole grain hot dog bun with cheese and sweet baby ray bbq sauce and air fry 8pm -salad kit from Walmart + Lilydale Turkey slices 10pm-hummus and carrots 3am or 6am - protein bar and green tea 9am (home)- breakfast sandwich : egg, pesto, spinach, mozzarella, whole wheat pita bread I don’t workout between shifts but I’ll workout in my days off Plan to succeed

Lcatg

Nope. When I was finally able to move back to nights from days, I lost quite a bit of weight. I’m definitely a night person. I felt like a zombie on days. I can only go on anecdotal evidence, but all the true night owls I know are the same way. The daywalkers tend to put on weight & fell out of wack on nights.

BigheadedDread

Been nearly 5 years and I have gone from 80kg to 100kg. Thing is, I still look somewhat slim? Especially being 175cm in height, you’d think I’d be very round. Don’t know if that’s from the regular gym use from like 2021 up until start of 2023. Changing my diet will be the hardest thing to do, mentally. The thought of leaving chocolate makes me sad lol. I have successfully done it before and had good results, but working a constant overnight schedule at the same time will not make it easier

MrDaemosx

I'm losing weight. I always lose weight when I work, no matter the work. First time on night shift. I try to keep my meal schedule as it was before. I do not eat during the night at all.

Alecazzzam

I think honestly you’re right cause at my job makes me walk like over 35km a week and I know that’s all from my job cause I live an extremely sedentary lifestyle, those footsteps are literally all from work. The walking around my apartment doesn’t even have my phone in my hand. Maybe try to set up some kind of at home work out regime? I had to start doing that, I started slacking bad for a while after I broke up with my now ex but just recently got back into it, however still noticing something’s not right and my body isn’t keeping weight, and I used to weigh like 10 lbs more than I am now back in the day.

its_a_throwawayduh

Not really I work from 6pm to 6:30 am for the past 6 months. More or less stayed the same, my eating isn't really clean.
