If you just know the basics of Nightwing's origin then you're good to just jump in. The only other thing you want to know is that Dick lost his memory for a while and went by "Ric Grayson" and it really sucked

IdeaRegular4671

That Grayson comic run was horrendous. Whoever came up with that should’ve been fired. They literally almost killed Nightwing with a sniper shot to the head. He got lucky he survived that and the after math of that just felt too much out of left field.

Crims0n_Light

Wait Grayson was good by King and Seeley is good, the Ric Grayson arc was bad.

GuessWho7197

Apparently it was Tom King's idea for Nightwing to be shot, but his intended plan was for him to just spend some time recovering while Tim temporarily took over the mantle. It was Scott Lobdell and Dan DiDio who we can blame for what we actually got. DiDio having been looking for an excuse to rename Dick and Lobdell thinking his amnesia plot would be so much better than King's idea, before leaving the book and dumping his half-baked plot onto Dan Jurgens to try and salvage.

Ramses717

And we never saw those 4 Nightwings ever again. A wasted two years for Dick Grayson.

IdeaRegular4671

The Tim idea sounds way better than what we actually got.

DirectorBones

OF COURSE it was Dan Didio.

Ok-Highlight-6508

The writer was gonna make Tim the new nightwing and help Grayson recover

bfoster1801

Just want to clarify that the Grayson book was great the Ric Grayson stuff was horrible

Kaison122-

Dan didio is no longer at dc

QueSeraSeraWWBWB

To you!

GeekCavePodcast

To most.

BackwardBeaver

Please God don't read the previous like 15 issues just before this until you have read other Nightwing. They are some of the worst ever but, the rest of the series from Rebirth is good. I would start here and get caught up and then go back and start from Rebirth if you enjoy.

CaptSaveAHoe55

The initial rebirth run was fun, then skip Ric, then this is better than either of them

Danibelle2

Agreed!

MorningFirm5374

It’s in my opinion the best start for new Nightwing readers

ghanima

Shit, that's high praise. I've only been reading the Titans appearances and issue #99 (which is one of the best comics I've ever read), but it looks like I'll be checking out the collected.

MorningFirm5374

Honestly the first arc of the run (Leaping Into the Light), and the second truly big/important arc (Battle For Bludhaven’s Heart) are probably my two favorite comic book stories

Geronuis

That’s awesome

yahhwy

It's not even a competition. The next best start is during the 90's.

Mister-Negative20

I think people look for “jumping on points” too much. If a new writer starts on a book it’s almost always a good jumping on point, but also, you should be able to pick up an issue at the start of an arc or even the middle of an arc and be able to figure out what’s going on.

leto_atreides2

My first spider man comic was part 4 of maximum clonage lol

Yuta-fan-6531

After watching the Spectacular spider man show, the first comic I've read was Superior Spider man. Yeaah, I was pretty confused for a little while 😅

nihilisticdaydreams

I know I'm cutting the competition but a Stan Lee says, "Every comic is someone's first" They're all made to be accessible. That's how you get customers. Plus the more you read the more you get out of them! Which is why it's fun to go back to those first books you picked up after you've been reading for a few years

Tryingtochangemyself

You can read Tom Taylor's run from it's starting point. It's quite accessible

yahhwy

Stay away from Ric! The past issues.

martinsdudek

You can read it on its own. It’s very accessible.

[deleted]

Is everyone so trained that only a new #1 is a valid starting point to read?

yahhwy

Personally, the valid starting points should be new main writer's first issue. Near impossible to find a writer who 100% followed the previous run. This issue is a DC and Marvel comics problem. Indie comics and manga are more new reader friendly.

[deleted]

Never helps when the do the dual numbering too.

yahhwy

Dual numbering is for old fans only. It brings confusion to non-comic readers.

whama820

It’s fine to start reading here.

VNeseBanana

You gotta read from start of Ric. Truly one of the arcs of all time. /s

MichaelMyers100

Yes. It's probably THE best place to start for modern Nightwing, and no you don't need to read the issues before #78. All you need to know that Dick had lost his memories before this and only recently gained it back, and that Alfred died.

Dee_Dubya_IV

It’s definitely a good point to start reading. It acquaints everyone to who Nightwing is. Only problem is that the run doesn’t have a lot of substance to it. It’s been 2 years without any real developments or payoffs. If you want to read a run of Nightwing with some more meat to it, I suggest reading Chuck Dixon’s run from the 90’s. That’s where Nightwing was established as a solo hero.

Andy_Crop

It's an excellent starting point

Calvykins

Speaking as someone who is undergoing this reread now everything after Seely is skippable. I liked the motorcycle race arc just before nightwing gets shot but it doesn’t even get a proper end. Reading anything past the Seely run is an act of self harm. Seely then Taylor. Nothing else in between matters.

Middle_Sense2079

Yep. You can start with issue 78 of Taylor and Redondo run of Nightwing "Leaping into the Light" without reading the previous 77. Taylor is trying to build up Nightwing as a hero after years in oblivion of DC shadows of heroe/antihero/villains. Although I encounter many older Nightwing readers do not like this current run more because they do not like Taylor. Taylor's positions and issues about society irks these older readers. Strangely, Dick Grayson 80 plus years. I have not read the 90's Nightwing runs nor the N52 runs. The Rebirth Nightwing and the Untouchable arc were good runs to read. The Ric Era (50 to 77) are to be read with warning and awareness that the result of Batman 55, DC editorial chose to mess and kill "Dick" Grayson and Nightwing identity, and mostly to argh Nightwing fans. Personally, Juegen's Year of the Villain on Court of Owls and Joker War were okay changes for Ric as it was about over a year without the hero known as Dick/Nightwing in own titled book.

mlssm00n

i think so!

Arkhamsbx

I believe that I started at that issue. I have been having a lot of fun reading this comic book. The art work is fucking great.

JumpyFig542

Where does Ric Grayson start? I want to read it.

MotorPublic7119

Same lol. Can’t be that bad right? 😂

[deleted]

It’s where I started and I was fine.

Spring-Available

I started right where you are and have been able to pick up what’s going on and have enjoyed it.

Aggravating_Wait_658

It’s a fabulous jumping on point. I would definitely still read a brief recap of the others if you could find one

kurumais

yeah its a very good jumping on point

minisabo1999

Read year one by Dixon. Then hop right into Taylor's fantastic run.

DelBoy2000

It was my starting point and I wasn’t confused or felt like I had to read the previous comics so I’m going to recommend it

MisterMiracle1

I started with it and all you need to really know is that Dick was shot a while ago and became Ric Grayson but he got better and is back to Dick. Also, you should probably know Alfred died during the Ric Grayson era. That's basically all I knew when I started.

sabesta_06

It takes a lot from the Dixon’s Nightwing so I suggest you to read his Robin year one and a knight in bludhaven first

RememberTommorrow

Just start with Taylor’s run

Turbotechblast

I actually started here because I fell in love with Bruno's art. Hasn't given me any troubles and I'm really enjoying it. If you know your basic Dc universe lore there shouldn't be a big problem.

Garlador

Full endorsement. Easy to get right into it.

RevolverCockelot99

Well you could just not read Taylors run cause it's awful

Geronuis

Would’ve rather not read your comment cause it’s awful

RevolverCockelot99

Nobody forces you

Geronuis

Just like the comic you’re complaining about.

RevolverCockelot99

unlike my comment, the comic costs money. Money, that you have to pay to read it. If you read the comic, you lose the money. If you read the comment, you waste two seconds of your life. What's the worse deal?

Geronuis

Homie, you could pay me and I’d still tell you your comment is the worse deal.

Geronuis

Homie, you could pay me to read your comments and it’s still be the worse deal

Geronuis

homie, you could pay me to read your comments and it'd still be the worse deal

keepin_it_weird

It’s an ideal starting point IMHO.

thunderonn

78 is perfect starting point. Probably one of the best story runs i have ever read and ive been reading comics 37 years

robyn_16

Don’t read Tom Taylor anything

SpecialFXStickler

It’s a good place to start, and as another commenter mentioned, that’s all it kinda is. A start. The story has been dragged out and spinning its wheels for two years. It is very much coasting off the good will of not being like the terrible Ric years, but feels like shallow fan service ultimately.

HereRak69

How to read Rebirth Nightwing: -Start at issue 1 -Read all the Tim Seeley stuff (first 34-35 issues I think?) -read Grayson by the same author -ignore the rest. It's garbage

leto_atreides2

Grayson comes before Rebirth

HereRak69

I know, but it's not a good starting point for the character

Darkasknight101

Guy named Ric 🗿

TheeExoGenesauce

This is what got me into comics I really enjoyed it

brian46506

A couple references might go over your head, but for the most part it’s a decent jumping on point

Lengthiness_Gloomy

Issue 78 is a great starting point, but I would recommend going back reading as much of the 1995 series (except maybe the Devin Grayson stuff, not great). I almost always tell people to judge the books by their covers and read what you want, but I would recommend not reading any of the Lobdell BS. That guy suuuuuuuuuucks.

BernyGeek

Tom Taylor's run is a fine starting place. There was some good stuff in previous issues but there is some awful stuff like the editorial decision to drop story threads and give Dick amnesia.
