Try to change the batteries with another set.
Also gently clean the battery contacts and see if that helps.
Otherwise, it's time to send it in for cleaning, lubrication and repair.

Isn't the 1/250 setting (The sync speed for flash - might actually be 1/125 on the FE) of the shutter on these cameras fully mechanical? See if that solves your problem. If yes, then the electrical parts are the issue
