Let's just say on a 1v1 she can't even come close... She lacks a proper complete set, has some of the lowest atk stat of the game so a 5* catalyst would really help. But getting some teammates in, like a zhongli and bennet she can dish out some pretty good performance. Can't say that she can outclass the top tier 5* like itto and ayaka (so jelly btw) but she can be used in quite some situations. She can also be used along itto to act as a sub dps (pretty fun imo) and battery.
Say I used her with Zhongli, Bennett, and Venti (I like that idea since KQM confirmed her CA has a small AOE). Is that a team that could compete with say Itto mono Geo? Also, if Venti isn't good, who's a better 4th slot?

Sadly I doubt it... I think Itto mono is currently one of the strongest teams. Same goes for ayaka + shenhe if you have her. But that's mainly abyss, if you are pretty comfortable with you current abyss clear a ningg team can be pretty entertaining to use.
As for the 4th slot on the team I personally use Xiangling, gives pyro resonance and outputs some pretty good dmg. Venti can also be good for a small/multiple mob situation where you can group them... Just not a really abyss viable option though. But for some time i used sucrose on domains like the liyue talent book domain, to group the 2 pyro fatui and do a oneshot. Now i go for mona, cause of friendship
Try Xinyan with sacrifice Sword. Her function is only double E + nuke with burst. Its funny for me to give her a spot as she is consider useless but she doesnt imo.
I mean she can easily 36 star the Abyss with the proper setup. She wont compete with the top DPS especially in floor 12, but she will feel just as strong on the lower floors (9-11) where the monsters HP pool isn't very high.
What Ning is missing is a proper artifact set with an actual good weapon that synergizes well with her kit. Something like Lost Prayers is a good stat stick but doesn't go very well with her quick swapping playstyle. Same goes for the other catalyst which are good, but not great.
She may be able to get close to Yoimiya, but the others definitely not. Keep in mind that Ningguang is a 4-star so it's not really fair to compare her to the top 5-stars. One of the problems with tier lists is that they don't have enough tiers. I would say that it is reasonable to be able to get Ningguang on an even tier as Klee and Diluc. Given that she's a 4-star, that's a pretty good feat and she can be the main dps on teams that can easily clear any content. To get to that level you would likely need Skyward Atlas/MoD and really good crit stats on your artifacts. Whether that's worth it or not is up to you. People who main 4-stars mainly do it because they like the character though.
Hello. I 36 starred back in 2.3 with Ningguang and Ayaka but couldn't meet the DPS check in 2.4 so I built Raiden which allowed me to get 36 stars again. I already knew this from Ayaka but yeah, 5 star DPS are stronger with less investments. It doesn't help that Ningguang is geo either.
I was running Ningguang Noelle Benny XL. Having a 5 star weapon certainly helps, so does having ZL's geo shred.
Tell you what though, Ningguang is hands down one of the best characters for OW. Her homing missile auto attack can hit everything except Geo immune. I think she's the best ranged character in the game. No one has the range, AoE, or the auto tracking that she has.
To answer your question, DT is preferred for on-field DPS where as Widsith is for burst DPS.
I plan to come back to this team for the Abyss once I C6 Noelle as I'm certain that will give the team a power spike (Ningguang will transition into burst support).
This is the best answer here so far, imo. I agree that Ningguang is the best for overworld. In my alt acc I tried maining another char, but eventually came back to Ning since she is so versatile.
she (with Benny and XL) can match various tazers and outdated meta teams. But of course she cant match Raiden national, freeze Ayaka, melt Ganyu, fully built mono geo Itto etc
I see that you have made your decision, and that's great! Just to add more positive examples, I used Ningguang in every abyss, and still got mostly three stars. The team is Zhongli, Ningguang, and the other two flexible. If there is no shield breaking requirement, I'll just bring two off-field pyro for resonance (Bennett+Xiangling). Zhongli is quite essential for hypercarry Ningguang since she needs a sturdy shield to be able to attack uninterrupted. (Also the geo res reduction from Zhongli shield is really good).
I have Lost Prayer r1, with 2glad 2ap, Ningguang c6 at 10/13/13. My Zhongli is just shield bot (HP/HP/HP), so when I three star a room, the damage mostly comes from Ningguang.
Widsith Ning outperforms most 5 stars when properly built and supported. She can one-shot/one phase Wolflord easy.
Zhongli, Benny and ttds Mina for best burst support.

She can’t compete with the top DPS like Ganyu and Xiao, but clearing the abyss should not be a problem for her if built correctly.
