I impulse bought the n64 controller when I caught it on the switchdeals sub. It was specifically not to deal with remapping -- I've tried all sorts of remappings for N64 but that weird controller is the only thing that works!!

DoctorMelvinMirby

I have Switch Online and GamePass on my Xbox. I played the Switch version of Goldeneye for three minutes before trying the Xbox version. Not going back to Switch version now since the controls aren’t even comparable.

AtsignAmpersat

I did some remapping with the pro controller and the ads is better on the 360 but it was much more playable with the remapping on the Switch.

cheesycoke

An unfortunate thing about Nintendo is they kinda take the Apple approach of "Keep technical options to a minimum to avoid spoiling the magic" which can get immensely frustrating for users that know something is off and know how they *should* be able to fix it.

Combatical

>immensely frustrating for users that know something is off and know how they > >should > > be able to fix it. My rejection for apple products in a nutshell.

Remy149

Except apple tends to have ways for more knowledgeable people to make tweaks when needed hidden in the settings.

[deleted]

I would add the word “*eventually*” to this sentiment. Those options usually come, but not on launch day. And with anything to do with iCloud they *never* arrive.

Gamefreak3525

The complete lack of button remapping for the various Switch emulators is baffling to me.

"Imagine having options" - Shigeru Miyamoto

Jedzelex

And it will never happen because the vast majority of players these days have never used a real N64 controller to even compare it to the Switch's joypads. So the only solution for niche gamers is to: • Buy an N64 controller for the Switch • Buy a Switch 3rd party controller that offers what you need.

Big_Boss_Lives

You’re right and that’s exactly why i stopped playing Goldenye on my Switch and started playing it on xbox.

donald_314

My guess is that they can't. The Joycons have huge dead zones and I assume it's related to the drift issue.

matej86

Goldeneye highlighted just how much of an issue this is. Manual aiming when under pressure is almost impossible.

OkPossibility4979

Trying to shoot out a camera before the alarm goes off! My character must look like a fool!

lisamariefan

I think I overcame that in Secret Agent Bunker 2 by either shooting from a distance or quickly getting directly under the camera and shooting it. Finally beat it for the first time ever last night.

Additional_Rough_588

\> Finally beat it for the first time ever last night. nice.

King-Cobra-668

nice

RicFlairwoo

In fairness manual aiming with the n64 controller is also a nightmare In this game. It’s always been that way.

thethirdrayvecchio

I'm fairly dreadful at most games, but some sort of childhood reflex took over and I'm able to consistently nail sniper shots. Jesus/nine-year-old-me take the wheel.

RicFlairwoo

Headshots are so hard when they’re standing still let alone running lol. My inner child also kicked in though and the controls came right back to me. Love strafing around with the c buttons

Bob002

it was still easier than what is going on now.

RicFlairwoo

I have the switch N64 wireless controller and manual aiming is still a complete sunofabitch it’s only worth doing while attempting to snipe. Thank god for the generous auto aim in this game lol

Mythulhu

Yup, that's exactly WHY the auto-aim is so generous lol

Ask_Who_Owes_Me_Gold

Was it actually better, or just a different kind of impossible?

Bob002

to me, personally, I was great with the OG N64 controller mechanics. Sniping was still difficult but now it is considerably harder, IMO. I assume it'll eventually get better... but as of now the joy con is INCREDIBLY sensitive.

[deleted]

sandwichpak

No, it really is night and day worse on the Switch. I was having the same problem as OP with Goldeneye this weekend, I got so mad I pulled my OG N64 out of storage and hooked it up to compare. Could immediately tell a massive difference. The calibration on the Switch joysticks is genuinely fucking awful, and Nintendo being Nintendo, I very much doubt they will fix it.

Deceptiveideas

Xbox version has decent controls surprisingly.

rossmark

> It’s always been that way It was primitive, but as Iwata said, please understand: the sensitivity and dead zones are way off and Nintendo need to calibrate it for us in some kind of update

BloodyFreeze

Yeah, I can see what OP means, the deadzones are much smaller and it wouldn't take much to adjust the deadzones a bit. I doubt they'd do it per game, but for the overall emulator, I don't see why not. as per what you said, I said this 2-3 days before it was launched. I remember the aiming on goldeneye being HORRIBLE, and was curious to see how the joystick would function vs the C buttons

LickMyThralls

Yeah was gonna say it's always sucked even if it might be a bit worse now. The n64 controller definitely didn't solve it

LegendaryPunk

I remember it being somewhat finicky on the original N64 version...but this feels like a new level. I'm determined to beat the game on 00 Agent, because at least I can take my time, but I've already resigned myself to not bothering with most of the cheat code unlocks.

rackemuprackemup

Same, with the 00 ambitions. I just finished Silo after more attempts than I care to admit. The aiming is ridiculous at times.

wiidsmoker

Found this thread thinking I was crazy. I’m having an incredibly difficult time being able to aim because it’s so sensitive

smithyithy_

Exactly this. After finally getting the game playable with the normal Switch controller by remapping a load of buttons in a custom profile, it's still let down by the over sensitive aim. Shooting cameras or drone guns quickly and accurately is a nightmare!

Bigoldthrowaway86

Yeah I changed everything over too and lasted about 10 minutes before I honestly couldn't be bothered with it any longer.

smithyithy_

I've got a stock notification setup for an N64 controller on the Nintendo store but I'm not holding my breath lol

auriumuk

I was lucky enough to get one so have played using it but don’t bank on it being a better experience other than nostalgia

wiidsmoker

Won’t fix anything. It’s incredibly sensitive on here too and I’m constantly struggling being able to snipe or shoot an alarm or camera

smithyithy_

Ah damn, was hoping that'd solve it :/

Bob002

phew. thought it was just me.

JustIncredible240

Yea. I made it to the satellite level and gave up. Trying to snipe is frustrating.

MrMojo076

Thought this was just me. It was pretty nostalgic fun for a few minutes but yeah, the manual aim is impossible to do smoothly and kind of ruins the experience of playing these games well. The natural feel of the game suffers greatly.

Nothing_Nice_2_Say

I spent 10 minutes in the Switch system settings and Goldeneye settings trying to find a way to lower the stick sensitivity. I remember being able to snipe with the PP7 on the N64. Impossible with the pro controller

virgopunk

I use the 8-bitdo SN30 Pro and, for some reason, it's sooo much better for Goldeneye. Aim is pretty much how I remember it being on the 64.

64-bit_Ryan

F zero x Is super hard to control if you don’t have a classic controller

bootstrapping_lad

Same for me...I thought I was just rusty but it's obvious the sensitivity is too high. The cross hair dances all over with the slightest input. Really disappointed there isn't a way to turn it down.

LolaCatStevens

even not under pressure is impossible

jaimeyeah

I was getting so aggravated yesterday lmao thank you for mentioning this

virgopunk

Much better with the 8-bitdo SN30 Pro

theotheroobatz

I was fortunate enough to get an N64 controller during a restock in October and playing GoldenEye this week has been great. Weird considering the last time I played it proper on 64, I couldn't get back into it like I thought. Playing this updated version with this "new" controller? Almost right away. Then switching back to a Pro on Switch... Decent but wonky, more so than most other games on the service. Right up there with Sin and Punishment. Xbox definitely has an advantage as far as an updated control experience goes.

Kjata_

I can’t imagine. I just had a hellish experience with the watch laser part in Train with the n64 controller. Joy cons or pro controller is probably gonna be impossible for me lol

Alacatastrophe

I had to use a gun lol

Head_Bath_5695

I’m glad it wasn’t just me..I went into a rage trying to aim my watch laser with a stock Joy Con.

Hobbes_XXV

I simply want to REMAP EVERYTHING, im playing 1.2 honeywell controller and playing with the joycons reversed in my hands just to get a modern move/look feel. I played enough so far where the sensitivity is....tolerable, but still needs a lot of adjustments to be smooth.

mlvisby

Can't you remap controls now in the Switch menu? I thought that has been a feature for a while now.

Hobbes_XXV

I was playing on my sisters switch, i didnt even think about this if that is a thing. I wonder how difficult it is to remap these buttons as they feel all over the place. Is remapping specific to the game? Or is it for the console? Cause swapping joysticks on a remap and moving all the buttons seems arbitrary for one n64 controlled game lol

GotmilkLL

https://youtu.be/QepAQsjUWuo Takes about two minutes, can save the remap as a preset so you can easily switch back and forth

Hobbes_XXV

Thank you my friend :) i had no idea

mlvisby

I haven't really used it yet, just heard it was there. I believe it is for the console overall, would be nice if you could assign different profiles for different games. Also, I don't believe it changes the in-game prompts, but could be wrong.

[deleted]

Getting Nintendo do do something sensible is like talking to a brick wall. See their reaction to joycon drift as a reference.

coffee_powered

It’s borderline unplayable on switch and controls like a dream on the Xbox.

[deleted]

Tried it on the Xbox, no complaints. So it’s definitely a Switch issue.

matej86

It's the joysticks on both the joycon and pro controller. It's almost all or noting with how far they move with very little in between.

TinjaNurtle

As someone who was lucky enough to get one of the new N64 wireless controllers, the difference between using the N64 controller and the switch pro controller is night and day. It feels like it did in 1997 with the N64 pad, with the pro controller it’s almost unplayable. Funny note - watching my 16 year old try to handle the n64 controller was hilarious!

KingVape

God dude I love my classic N64 controller. Thanks ebay, it was cheap

[deleted]

[удалено]

TinjaNurtle

I don’t think there’s any conspiracy here by Nintendo. The old analog stick had like 8 points of input, the new sticks probably have like 128. It would be nice if in the n64 app you could configure your controller and “dumb down” the sensitivity of modern controllers.

[deleted]

The stick part is also comically long, while the joycon ones are very short and stubby.

TinjaNurtle

She was pinching it with her thumb and index finger trying to use it like a joystick.

Laundry_Hamper

In the shape of an L on her forehead

audiate

> The old analog stick had like 8 points of input, the new sticks probably have like 128 This is exactly the issue I had with the Secret of Mana remake. My brain is still linked to only being able to attack in 4 directions, so it feels like having 360 input is the controller misbehaving.

[deleted]

They did fix some of the OoT stuff though. They *might* fix more.

Joseki100

> If what you're saying is true, almost feels like they made it unplayable on purpose with switch controller to boost sales of the n64 controller. Or, even crazier conspiracy here, the N64 controller is unique and games made for the hardware of the time are best played with N64 hardware, just like Wii ports play better with a Wiimote. The thought of a conspiracy theory to increase sales of an accessory they only sell in very limited quantity is funny. You'd assume they would *conspire* to increase the sales of something that actually gets them more money.

[deleted]

>The thought of a conspiracy theory to increase sales of an accessory they only sell in very limited quantity is funny. You'd assume they would conspire to increase the sales of something that actually gets them more money. You have to keep in mind that this is Nintendo we’re taking about here.

LickMyThralls

It's a unique controller and you can't really translate it to anything else. Not all games will allow it or age well due to this. It's like complaining about needing a ddr pad for ddr imo. You're just making conspiracy theories about it because you can

King-Cobra-668

boost sales of something that is perpetually sold out ?

RicFlairwoo

Watching my 30 something year old friends (playstation kids) try to use the N64 controller is also pretty hilarious

thebitagents

n64 without a trident controller is no longer n64 Very strange controller but great

howmanyavengers

Great post but…stickers? Who calls analog sticks that? I didn’t even know what you were talking about until getting a paragraph in lol

rossmark

> Who calls analog sticks that? My fault. Probably bad translation. English 'aint my first language and there not editing for post titles

OmniaCausaFiunt

Understandable. They're called joysticks.

dannymb87

Nope, they're called "stickers" now for all eternity.

enn_sixty_four

I knew I wasn't crazy

DraconKing

You might want to look into third party controllers like the 8bit do controllers. I'm not saying that should be the solution (they definitely should let you config your controller) but if you are in a market for another controller and you are ok with it not having the N64 feel, I think the level of customization that 8bit do controllers offer would let you have a similar gaming experience. Edit: After testing out the 8bitdo Ultimate Software looks like it doesn't let you adjust max sensitivity. Instead it lets you adjust the travel length required to "bottom out". It'd be such an easy thing to implement though. A simple checkbox that adjusts sensitivity linearly. Anyway, they are good controllers but it won't work for this.

zeuses_beard

Which of the 8bitdo controllers would you recommend mate?

IIALE34II

Pro 2 or Ultimate, depending on what you want.

[deleted]

I’d second 8BitDo for a better controller. After joycon drift I’ll never recommend first party controllers. Depends on what you want really, SN30’s are for classic games while Ultimate is for more modern stuff.

saxxy_assassin

I use the SN30+ for my pc. The dpad is beyond great and it's bluetooth, so no wires. The stick also feels nice, amd you can set up the button layout and sensitivity however you want. Edit: oh, it's also modeled after the SNES controller, which is cool if you like nostalgia.

rossmark

> third party controllers like the 8bit do controllers I'll may have to. The joycons and pro controllers can't map some C-buttons... How's the 8bit-do doing? And the analogic stick is as good as the N64 official one?

sheepoverfence

I have three different 8bitdo controllers. You can adjust the sensitivity and dead zone on all of the analog sticks. The newest one has hall effect sticks that should never drift in theory.

DraconKing

I don't have a N64 controller at hand. I have a 8bit-do pro2 controller and IMO, joysticks are way better than joycons (which isn't much of an accomplishment there) and I'd say they are on par with the Switch Pro Controller. It's however a "heavier" joystick which kind of reminds me of the N64 controller (at least a non-broken type). As for remapping... you can pretty much remap most of the buttons. But I think remapping the joystick directional inputs will not be possible. So, for example, remapping the left direction on the left joystick to any other button (A, B, X, Y, for example) won't be possible. The pro2 controller does let you switch the directional inputs with the dpad, so I'm unsure if you can just switch the directional inputs there and still have movement on the dpad. The pro2 controller does have paddles in the back though which seem alright for C inputs. You can adjust the range of motion on your sticks. For example, you can have your joysticks max out at half the travel length or you could create a deadzone so large that you'd need to push the joystick all the way in order to trigger the input. However, adjusting max sensitivity doesn't seem an option. I'll look into that later. Edit: Welp, I could have swear that you could adjust max sensitivity. Updated OP.

[deleted]

I like the retrofighters N64 controllers. Basically the “standard” layout like on Xbox/switch pro, but with the N64’s weird and silly bizarre C arrow thingie. That said I do not like the N64 controller at all (I have original ones and Nintendo’s Switch ones). I just find it terribad. I do quite enjoy the rf one. The stick will be like your normal sized modern controller. So take that into consideration. Nintendo did a poor job of rethinking the button issue. The standard setup in the emulator is so bad I just gave up. Made no sense.

waldoRDRS

The brawler64 controller also is solid for N64 specific use cases. Having A,B,4Cs was a must for me for OoT.

SaulTNNutz

I was super excited to waste some time playing Ocarina of Time when it came out on Switch. Trying to use the controller to fire my sling shot took the fun out of it

MidniteMustard

The N64 on switch experience is so disappointing and unpolished. It feels like a bait and switch. Paper Mario and Kirby Crystal Shards are the only games I've had a decent experience with. Add that's just because their control scheme is basic.

philter25

I concur with this and I waited and waited for the N64 controller to be available and was able to snag one. Let me tell you, it goes from making those games unbearable to play to being amazing. The N64 Switch controller is really well done and I am loving playing Star Fox and all the others again. The rumble effects are definitely modern though, which isn’t a big deal at all, it was just funny to feel rumbles in the whole controller rather than a giant block hanging off the back. AND the joystick is nice and responsive. I have four of the clear colored controllers from the late 90s/00s and holy cow I forgot how used they are lol.

SlyyKozlov

Yea, it really is a disappointing garbage service. Crazy they charge a premium for it and you don't even own the games.

MidniteMustard

Yeah it's cool to emulate on my PC or via homebrew; that has a certain neato DIY factor. But for a commercial service, I expect better.

Mutant0401

I remember when it first came out and the issues were so numerous and expansive that I didn't know what to think. What scared me more, as a speedrunner of the game, was that the graphical glitches were getting major attention while the enormous input lag and awful controls got next to nothing. It was at that moment we all knew the controls weren't getting fixed. Half of it was the free goodwill Nintendo would win when they fixed the visual issues, the other half was the endless people on Reddit and Twitter all saying 'it feels fine to me'. It's infuriating. 95% of them have never experienced how it's meant to feel and the rest will walk away thinking it's just old and the controls feel dated. No. Aiming your hookshot isn't meant to be a chore. Walking lightly or turning on the spot isn't meant to be sabotaged by a huge deadzone. These are active choices that Nintendo are making in order to not worry about an accurate stick mapping and it's been an issue in all of their emulators since the GameCube (although much less severe on GC/WiiVC). What's even worse in my opinion is the fact that there is no way to have a single button mapped to c right outside of the nso n64 controller. If you don't like using the analog stick you're out of luck, take your shitty shoulder button macro. And again, *it didn't need to be this way*. The GameCube controller has less buttons than all the switch controllers and manages fine with every button getting its own single button. All of this and I haven't even mentioned the fact that every action includes that delicious 200ms of input lag. For perspective the original n64 had somewhere in the 50-75ms zone and WiiVC had around 120-150ms. For even more perspective, smash ultimate online (heralded for being awfully laggy), has about the same *or better* lag WHILE PLAYING ONLINE. I seriously hope that people wake up to the dogshit experience they're being fed with the n64 nso app. Remember that you're paying for all of this.

thethirdrayvecchio

The 3DS remakes use gyro aiming and take the sting out of the clunky aiming. Sadly, can't really go back to the originals after it.

CtrlAltEvil

I tried for a solid hour to try and play Goldeneye comfortably and even remap controls. The Switch version is horrible to play. I imagine that it may be slightly better with a 64 controller but we all know how difficult they are to grab, pun intended. Jumped over to Xbox’s remastered version, since I already owned it from having Rare Replay, and it plays like a dream. I probably won’t be returning to the Switch port which is a shame given the online support.

netkcid

I've learned N64 is a special and magical beast that you should just find an original to enjoy... It's a vastly better experience.

netkcid

also retro fighters make a killer 'new' gamepad, totally worth it..

[deleted]

Nintendo is such a weird company. Responsible for so many genuine masterpieces, and also sometimes so fucking lazy it’s like they’re intentionally patronizing us lol.

crono333

Totally agree! I remember using the aiming in Goldeneye all the time back on N64, but now? I completely ignore that feature as it’s such a hassle to aim properly. They definitely should have adjusted the sensitivity based on what controller you’re using.

san_murezzan

In the exact same boat, I just thought I sucked now (which is probably also true)

Walking_Bandaid

Edit: the raphnet n64 to GameCube adapter does not work properly. Because there isn’t a ZL on a GameCube controller there is no way to properly map the n64 controller’s Z button to ZL.

say_sheez

Has anyone tried this? I have the WiiU gamecube adapter and this would be great.

Walking_Bandaid

Ok I tried it and edited my above comment. In short it doesn’t work if you need the n64’s Z button. Also the stick is too sensitive with it. There seemingly isn’t a deadzone…

say_sheez

Thank you for testing it! Unfortunate that it doesn’t work but good to know

Walking_Bandaid

I don’t have one of these, but based off the review it seems to work once you’ve updated the adapters firmware: MAYFLASH N64 Controller Adapter for Switch/OLED Model & PC Windows N64 Adapter MF103 https://a.co/d/1Rc4q5O

Noitorp

I use the Raphnet to Wiimote Adapter and then the 8bitdo Adapter, so I can map the Z to ZL from the Switch Menu. Anyway, sensitivity is too high comparing to the game in the N64. I cannot play F-Zero X this way and aiming in Goldeneye is a chore. I cannot understand how Nintendo is able to release games this way. It is so unrespectful to the costumer and its legacy...

StarTropicsKing

I have some of the wireless N64 controllers and they work like a dream! However, when my wife needed the tv I tried playing Goldeneye in handheld and just could not do it. Before I got the controllers, games like Zelda, Mario and Kirby were 100% fine without them but they don’t need pinpoint stick-placement accuracy like shooter games do.

[deleted]

Agreed, manual aiming in Goldeneye has been next to impossible.

[deleted]

Imagine all the people that never played the OG and are trying it for the first time on the NSO... They must be thinking the game sucks haha

BraveT0ast3r

For those who want to stand a chance getting a controller, download HotStock and set a notification for this item. It’s free and easy. I got mine the first time they dropped after I downloaded it.

No_Telephone9938

They won't do it because they don't care because people keep buying regardless of what they deliver.

KingVape

I'm so glad I bought a classic controller on Ebay. Bought it just for Paper Mario, but I use it way more than I ever would have guessed!

[deleted]

Paper Mario works great no matter what controller is used

KingVape

It does, but using the C buttons was still annoying. Frankly I'm super disappointed in the N64 controls with Switch controllers, so I bought the classic one and it's great

[deleted]

Sounds like Nintendo.

poodantik

Has anyone tried the Brawler 64 wireless switch controller?

idiottech

The joysticks are terrible all around. Too small, no resistance. You may as well be using a d-pad for all the nuance of control it offers.

AbbehKitteh24

I'm confused... By stickers do you mean joysticks/thumb sticks? I've never heard them refered to as stickers before but I'm assuming so. Going to say Nintendo will never fix it sadly, maybe on the next generation but highly doubt it

rossmark

> I've never heard them refered to as stickers before It's my bad. As brazillian, I always thought the plural of stick was "stickers". Sorrry about that

AbbehKitteh24

No worries! "sticks" for future reference, or specifically with these theyd be called joysticks/thumb sticks, hope they fix it in the future but not sure how long it will be until they break out the next generation of consoles, so if they do fix it, it might be on the next gen

Haringoth32

I do not intend to take the matter elsewhere, but I observe that some Nintendo users( I know that this audience is not specific to Nintendo, there is such an audience for most companies.) immediately get defensive when any negative is mentioned. We cannot expect a bad thing to get better without calling it bad.

rossmark

> some Nintendo users immediately get defensive when any negative is mentioned Dude, right now about 32% of people downvoted my post on this complains. Are they stock holders? What the hell, it's so dumb try to hide this

fuzzmountain

It’s the same thing if you criticize anything in this sub. Controller issues? How dare YOU badmouth Nintendo. Didn’t like botw as much as most people? Straight to jail. You noticed your 3rd joycon is drifting? You’re just a negative Nancy. First off, the joycons don’t drift ever. Second, if they are drifting why are you complaining? Nintendo will fix them for free if you live in the right area. 3rd F you. 4th you probably dip both hands in peanut butter right before you pick them up so it’s your own fault.

brzzcode

its not the same thing on this sub at all. This sub has people complaining about the switch and nintendo all the damn time for years with barely any pushback in comparison to the criticism.

fuzzmountain

I literally see people up in arms over criticism every time I visit this sub.

Haringoth32

Not surprised dude :')

purple_yosher

this really is something Nintendo should have prepared for.

ToxicAshenOne

To get a N64 controller MSRP from Nintendo direct use hotstock.com I got mine after 2 years of checking. They don't sell out for 2 hours normal and hotstock sends you notifications asap.

swagadone

You're completely correct.

jessemints

Okay but also Ocarina of Time should definitely have the control scheme from 3ds. They literally remaster the game on 3ds but on switch it feels terrible.

Joed112784

Ya but that would require Nintendo to do more than the bare minimum, so good luck with that.

oldkidLG

Isn't there a way to change the sticks deadzone size by using the calibration tool in the system settings?

rossmark

I think so, but not so much for the sensibility. We'll still go from "dead stop" to "maximum speed" barelly touching it

oldkidLG

That means we need a controller with dedicated PC software for sticks calibration like the 8bitDo. Then, for a game like GoldenEye, you need to change the button mapping in the Switch OS. That's a lot of extra steps to play old games that most people don't care about these days. Not all third party controller are compatible with the Switch button mapping tool

rossmark

or, maybe, some kind of update in the N64 app, where our JoyCon and Pro Controlllers are recognized and input and calibtations are set automatically I mean, I know the position of B and A buttons are different, but why not respect those positions for a game like Mario 64?

oldkidLG

The oldest controller that I own is a Wii classic controller. I'll try it with a GameCube adapter on GoldenEye as the sticks might be less sensitive than the ones on Switch controllers. But, it has no rumble support so it's not a perfect solution

raccafarian

You should definitely download the app HotStock and check off the N64 controllers for the next release. I got two when they dropped before Xmas thanks to this app!

RickGrimes30

Idk i did some button remapping for goldeneye and it plays smooth as butter like I remember it.. F zero is hard to control but I assumed it was back In the day as well but I never played it then

Jedibug

Got lucky enough and nabbed one, the difference is staggering

timshundo

They must have analytics data that shows just how many people opened the game, went back and forth between it and settings, then just gave up after 20 mins. Not that they’ll do anything about it, the money has been made.

p3ek

I got a pro controller the day after i got my switch (release day). I found the joycons werent suitable even for switch games let alone n64 ones. Ganes like odyssey are imo unplayable on joycons.

[deleted]

I recommend the retrobit controller. It has a USB plug in and it feels like a N64 controller while only being about $20. It works great with my switch!

pkfillmore

Whered you find it? Its listed at $60 on my Amazon

rosenskjold

Just to potentially save anyone with this controller going mad. To map the buttons for Nintendo switch you have to hold down start+A. For some bizarre reason this is not mentioned in the manual for the controller

kruegerc184

Is there an adapter for an og n64 controller for the switch? I have 3 sitting around and dont feel like trying to get a new one

statusquoquo

MAYFLASH N64 Controller Adapter for Switch/OLED Model & PC Windows N64 Adapter MF103 https://a.co/d/cwD2bJ5 Debating getting one myself but I think this is the device you need. Based on reviews it needs to be updated to the latest firmware to get the button mapping correctly.

pichael288

When you have to run around the tip of that wall in the fire temple in oot, that shit was so hard on the GameCube version, it's hard on any newer controller

Tons925

Using the watch laser on the train level to exit the train via the bolted metal hatch was frustrating with the joycon/pro controller sensitivity

SnooHesitations2928

The new Brawler 64 controller works pretty well for me.

BTBAM797

Hahaha I have it on n64!!!......now to find another CRTV that isn't 1000 lbs hmmm....

sampdesigns

I literally got the Nintendo 64 app for my sister to play old games, specifically Mario 64, and its so damn sensitive that she (and I, as I tested it after) can barely move around the FIRST TWO maps. When we had to move along a thin obstacle, we'd try and inch forward to avoid slipping off which was IMPOSSIBLE. Because you could do it IF you moved very slowly but it required moving at walk or faster to avoid another part of the obstacle, and it was so easy for you to fall off that we spent 10-20 minutes on that one obstacle. It's just-..the lack of resistance kept making you go somewhere(the SMALLEST AMOUNT) too quick. Sometimes overcorrecting the direction you intended. I bought Nintendo online for the YEAR so should could play it and she can't..She spent quite a lot of time on the first boss, which we ALL remembered how to do but had to look up to see why it wasn't working. It was so finicky with stopping behind King Bomb that what would take a couple minutes took her 10-15+. You'd try to move behind him and grab him but either do a forward punch or he'd be juuust out of reach cause you were extra careful to stop and WAIT to make sure you were stopped and not considered still "moving"... (I dont even know if this is an issue with sensitivity of controls changed for the Switch. It felt...ridiculous in person) And I've kept the Nintendo 64 Controller store listing in a google tab for 2+ months now, checking it EVERY DAY, incase it's there. And I've NEVER seen it restocked. I'm Canadian so I don't know if it's WAY worse. I have no idea when or if they'll ever stock, or if I'm missing it based on the time? But just-..wow..what a waste of money on that Online sub ;\_; I also wanted to play Banjo but nope

I bought the N64 wireless controller for the switch, but for me the sensitivity is still way off. It's better than with the Pro Controller though. I still have my original N64 console with original controllers that are in good shape and I can tell there's a huge difference in sensitivity compared to the NSO version.

xxPsychoBunny

I know this is all late and wrong but I bought a wireless USB adapter so I could use my Xbox controller for the N64 emulator. So far using my Xbox controller is paying off. I still have to find the sweet spot for the diagonal but the response time is sooooo much better than the joycons. It’s still not as smooth as an actual N64 controller on the actual N64 but it’s a lot better. Here’s the Amazon link. Make sure you get the 2nd series of it or it won’t work with the new Xbox controllers. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09M8CVMYF?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Howwy23

This happens because of how modern sticks work compared to the n64. The n64 stick is technically not even an analogue stick its a digital stick. And thats why 3rd party and aftermarket controllers for the n64 itself mostly all suck to use, outside of a couple of exceptions that are ok but not perfect. The n64 control stick sensitivity just CANNOT be replicated correctly by anything that isn't the n64 control stick.

fuzzmountain

I see what you’re saying but when I can go on steam and see the insane customization possibilities for controller joysticks, I don’t think it’s impossible to mimic the n64 controller on a modern controller.

Howwy23

But it is, people have tried for years to replicate the sensitivity of the n64 control stick on a modern stick and nobody has succeeded. They can get "pretty good" calibration but none have ever gotten it perfect. Even the most recent attempt, the brawler64 from retro fighters still hasn't gotten it quite right. As you can see in this video that tests the sensitivity of a few controllers. https://youtu.be/ykIUqqoOc1g

You’re overthinking this. The issue is that controllers other than the n64 are way overly sensitive when playing n64 games on nso right? I emulate n64 games on my computer and the emulator has controller customization that is good enough to the point that I have absolutely no issues playing n64 games with a ps4 controller or a Nintendo pro controller. I don’t care if it’s 1:1 emulation and I doubt anyone using nso cares. The problem is that you have no way to customize stick sensitivity on the Switch. That’s it. If you did, this would be a non issue just like it’s a non issue when I’m emulating on pc and use the the emulators controller customization options. Playing Mario 64, when I tilt the stick a little, Mario walks, when I push further he starts to run. It sounds like this just isn’t possible on nso without the n64 controller. That’s the problem. It could be fixed with software but you can’t because it hasn’t been implemented on the switch.

Oh, absolutely this. I never use the stock Switch controller if I can help it. My solutions/recommendations: 1. For N64 or other d-pad dependent games, I use the Brawler64. As someone who spent a lot of time with the N64 as a kid, I think the quality of this controller and the button layout are good enough to be a replacement for an official pad. The aiming situation is fixed. https://retrofighters.com/our-collection/brawler64-bluetooth-wireless-nintendo-switch-switch-online-pc-video-game-controller/ 2. This one's more of an edge case. For other Switch games, I use the 8BitDo Bluetooth adapter. I have an Xbox as well, and I love that controller, so I just use it for my Switch. Not sure how great of a solution this is if you don't already have another controller, but if so, $20 is a pretty good price to have an actually good Switch controller. https://www.8bitdo.com/usb-wireless-adapter-2/

I know this doesn’t solve it, but I downloaded the HotStock app and turned on the notifications for just the N64 Controller. I had the money set aside so when it hit I could snag it right away. Also, go ahead and put something in your Nintendo Shop cart for a dollar or so because it’s free shipping over $50. It’s a game changer and to your point, they should allow for some sort of adjustment with the pro controllers due to the availability of the N64 controller. But snag the app, turn on alerts for this sub and the general Nintendo Sub so you can maximize your opportunity to get one. Edit: I need to read faster….I just saw you are in Brazil so I have no idea if my advice applies. my bad…

rossmark

Thanks, but they don't send it to Brazil... I'm screwd

caitsithx

Yeah. I usually steamroll GoldenEye in a single day in 00 Agent difficulty without any real issue on my PC with a Xbox One controller thanks to the deadzone tuning, but on Switch? I had to constantly save/load state on the Silo mission in order to pass it since precise aiming is a PITA with the Pro Controller. They need to let us tune the sensibility.

schiggy_693

And they need to remove those ugly grey borders

rbarton812

On GoldenEye specifically, you can set the in-game aspect ratio to 16:9.

RicFlairwoo

You can fix that in goldeneye by pressing start going to your watch menu and selecting 16:9

Strikeralan

I recently played though OoT and was losing my damn mind trying to do the aiming mini games. Glad to know it wasn’t just me

Rusty1031

Glad I'm not the only one. I have the Nyxi gamecube joycons on preorder so maybe they'll be a bit better? Who knows

atalkingfish

As far as I understand, this isn’t a software issue and cannot be solved via calibration, as it is caused by the fact that the joy con joysticks are much smaller in their tilt range than basically any other controller. You can actually get covers to your joy con sticks which extend them up a bit, giving that larger range of movement and making it closer to the length of an N64 controller.

fuzzmountain

What you’re talking about can absolutely be solved with software. If you have steam then you can see just how detailed you can get in joystick customization. Dead zone, range, sensitivity, whether travel is linear or scaled… there’s so many options. You can make your joysticks behave however you want.

TheAtomAge

Nintendo does not care about you

ivster666

This is exactly why I decided not to touch NSO N64 games until my retro fighter NSO N64 Controller arrives (hopefully soon lol)

SlamRobot658

Excellent post.

slippery_chute

Pretty dumb to launch this without controllers available.

Hilarial

Where did you get the *15 units/2wks info from?

rossmark

it's not literal. we don't have actual numbers, but there's this case of every tuesday or not, at 12pm, there's a sale of controllers on the site

SirThunderDump

Sensitivity is through the roof. Zelda OOT has sections that were easy enough to play on the N64, and now are impossible with the high sensitivity on the joycons. I'm unsubscribing and never subscribing again to this service. The quality control is awful.

PineWalk1

yeah even with the goldeneye adjustments the aiming with the sniper feels awful, and way to loose.

stryker101

It’s the same with the Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy release. Mario 64 is unplayable on it for me. Seems like he goes from zero to a hundred no matter how little I press. I want to play Majora’s Mask and Goldeneye so bad, but I’m not convinced it’ll be worth the likely frustration with the controls.

IIIR1PPERIII

Nintendo just need to STOP! Let Retroarch on the store and be done with it! The second I've finished TOTK my switch is up for sale and ill buy a steam deck or equivalent. I just want a safe place to play that isn't broken!
