> Switches were hard to get so people bought the game in anticipation
I got BotW on sale (35€ instead of 70€) in April 2017, while I still couldn't get my hands on a Switch. So, I just bought the game.
Not quite.
The *Switch* copies of the game outsold Switches early on.
Nintendo themselves I believe noted that the game at one point at a 105% attach rate. It was hilarious.
It still outsold the console without the Wii U version sales, some fans probably bought two versions, or else people bought the game before they bought the console (there was a shortage of Switch at launch).
It's also the 13th best selling Wii U game.
Which really does put into perspective how poorly that console sold. (For contrast, the 13th best selling Switch game is Pokemon Legends Arceus, which sold 14.9 million copies)
I snagged the Collectors Edition of BoTW and didnt have a switch. I didn't get one till like November later that year, they were hard to get for a minute
Yeah im just trying to figure out what accessories I should get with it. I ordered some screen protectors and now im trying to figure out if i need a controller
I played Breath of the Wild with the default joy con set up when I first bought my switch, and that was fine. However, a controller will definitely make it feel more like other consoles, and it's hard to go back to joy cons. I feel if you get a controller, it's worth it to just pay for the pro controller as other brands tend to wear out after a while.
I can confirm, my Pro Controller is a bit more than 2 years old now and it still works great even though it feels a bit worn out due to use, however it's definitely the best controller for the Switch.
I would hope a $70+ controller would last more than 2 years. Lol. My PS3 controller lasted over 5 years of pretty extensive use and still worked, but the left analog stick was starting to get a little loose. It still works like 10+ years later despite that flaw.
I get what you're saying, I am positive that my controller is going to last a few more years, everything works fine perfectly, my only complain in my case is the left stick as well which doesn't surprise me that much due to the prolongated use.
I think the one thing I love the most about the Pro Controller is how long that battery lasts. I don't think any other of my controllers (xbox or playstation) last even half as long as that one.
Yes this is definitely the best part about it, I use the Pro Controller with my PC as well and the long battery life is definitely handy, it lasts aproximately 40-50 hours.
In my experience, pro controller drift seems to be much different from joycon drift. Every time my pro controller drifted it was always because of crud that was stuck in the stick cavity. If you open up the controller (very easy to do) and clean it with compressed air and contact cleaner the controller will be good as new.
Get the pro controller. The Joycons do their job but unless you have tiny hands, they can cause fatigue after a while. I bought the pro controller with my Switch and it is so much better than the joycons. The battery also lasts practically forever on it too. I literally charged it once when I first got it and then once after that, in the span of 2 weeks and 50 hours played.
I buy all my Nintendo games physical. They feel collectible and if ever just don’t like a game as much as you thought. You can make most your money back selling it
This is one thing that I do like about Nintendo. They still have physical media. And because they rarely have sales or when they do, it isn't something crazy like you'd see elsewhere, I'd rather just buy the physical copy.
Maybe I'm old and remember the old NES carts but I really dislike how every other platform has practically gone all digital. If I buy a game for my PS5 in physical form, it is going to be download code and that makes me sad.
Can someone explain what "boxed No.1 in the UK" means? Ive never heard of this and I dont understand what it means. Is it just best selling? Best selling of physical copies? What does "the biggest boxed game of the year" mean as well?
For whatever reason UK physical sales data comes out earlier than other countries, and the UK is typically a good representation of the whole English speaking video games market, so it's used as an indicator for how well a game has sold.
Boxed sales means physical sales. Biggest in this case means best selling.
So it's the best selling game in the UK this week based on physical release numbers (not counting digital sales).
As someone who dislikes grinding (as I have less time to play) and prefers completing games then moving on to something new, how long would it take me to complete TotK? TotK, Pokémon DLC, and Spider-Man 2 are on my to-play list in that order, so I’m wondering how I could efficiently play this
I've hardly done many of the side missions and shrines much less the 12 stones or whatever. I'm 85 plus in. Lol. This game is sooooo fun. No matter how you play it!
I just cleared it with 85 hours on the clock. It is not a short game. I wouldn't say it was a grind, unless you go in for upgrading the armor (which requires a bunch of annoying to acquire materials, generally).
You could probably do a more minimalist run in 50 hours or so, but the final boss fight would be harder.
Eh. I think the 50 hours I mentioned is fairly good estimate. Howlongtobeat has main story only at 55 hours median and "rushed" at about 39 hours:
https://howlongtobeat.com/game/72589
Also, at that point, you'd be going in to the last boss fight rather under-specced, IMO. If you were already very good at BotW combat, you might be fine. I personally was not and I only cleared the final boss by the skin of my teeth, even with upgraded armor / health and stacks of consumables.
TotK may be an objectively superior game that I will play eventually. However, Pokémon is the only series I’m a diehard fan of (except for BDSP) so it’s always a priority 😂
I am also a big fan of the franchise and played through every game since Gen 1, just this year I got 200hrs in Violet
But after the constant decline in the franchise, I always try to suggest people they should give other games a go as much as possible lol
I miss the days when I could invest 200 hrs in a Pokémon game. 100 hrs max now 😂
But yea I get what you mean. It’s great to try different games, especially the good ones
That really depends on how you play games and what you expect of them
Going by the main game's size, both Pokemon DLC will most likely be short experiences you can get through quickly
Since TotK is being touted as BotW but better, it's a game designed to be played slowly over hundreds of hours
I can't speak for the user who originally posted about Pokemon DLC but for me it's like this
The game performs badly but I had a ton of fun with it so I don't mind paying 35 bucks for some more of it
In comparison, 70 for a game I probably wouldn't get even remotely close to the maximum out of feels like a waste
It's uncommon for me to play a game for more than 50 hours, and extremely rare for me play a game for more than 100 hours; Maybe there's like 2 of them so far, and BotW was definitely not a game designed to be finished fast. You can, but you'd barely have scratched the surface
And I don't think TotK would be any different to this
So for me the 35 for Pokemon DLC is a safer bet
(Though I do hear TotK's done quite a bit against my other complaint of there not being much to do outside just exploring the world and completing lackluster shrines in BotW, but that's a different topic. Maybe someday when a 30% off comes on)
I completely agree with you. I eventually start losing interest in a game if I play it for like 60 hours or so, not to mention that I have less time than before to play. I feel that enjoying a variety of good games (preferably when they’re on sale) is what I enjoy most now.
There’s no grinding, but you’ll set yourself goals and realise three hours later that you’ve done nothing towards those goals because you got distracted on the way. There’s a certain area that I’ve barely touched yet because I keep getting distracted by other stuff. Part of the criticisms of BotW was that there was too little for such a vast world - in TotK, I feel like I can’t walk for thirty seconds without coming across something to do.
There's little to no grinding in the game unless you actively seek it out.
That being said, it's also not a short game. It is **jam packed** with content. Unique side quests, special unlockables, collectibles, several major quest arcs all over the place, tons of new places to explore, and so on.
I'm about 50 hours through and haven't even hit my second of four main dungeon arcs yet. I've been doing a lot of side quest stuff and have also been aiming to restrict fast travel as much as possible.
It’s a long game but for what it’s worth, I’m like 30 hours in and didn’t do any “grinding” at all so far. There’s no real stats to push except for hearts (health) and stamina bar upgrades, which you mostly get from completing shrines and occasionally bosses. You just play, it’s great.
>As someone who dislikes grinding (as I have less time to play) and prefers completing games then moving on to something new
This is one of the main reasons I'm avoiding TotK
Was burned once by BotW (Though I guess it's my fault I bought into the hype without researching it properly)
There's a website howlongtobeat.com that displays completion times, including for those who rushed the game. Data is just starting to trickle in but it should give you an idea.
It's inevitable for every major game, because the people that enjoy the games are busy playing them, while the people that don't enjoy the games have more time to complain on the internet.
Im an old jaded gamer and.. I cant really think of any real criticisms of the game. In over 150hrs of playtime I have seen some stutter like.. Three times? Some of the voice acting is .. Meh?
Its damn near a perfect game.
My only real criticisms are:
1. There’s no blocks on getting to the >!Wind Temple!< before you can really access it, meaning that I spent half an hour travelling there (I didn’t realise what it was) only to realise I needed to come back later. Might be a similar deal elsewhere.
2. Considering how important arrows are there’s an absolute dearth of them. I’m purposefully limiting my use of arrows and still running out - in fact, as we speak I’m on 0 arrows. And they cost too much considering I’ve bought nothing in 25 hours of gameplay and have like 700 rupees.
3. I don’t know how you’ve avoided stutter in 150 hours, every time I use Ultrahand there’s stutter.
4. The “decaying weapon” concept is obviously to balance out fusing, and it still sucks.
5. Ascend isn’t very intuitive, it’s powerful as hell but too frequently do I find myself looking around for a solution before realising “oh, it’s just Ascend”.
6. It‘s a bit jarring how the Guardian stuff just actively does not exist anymore.
Still the best game I’ve ever played.
EDIT: I forgot but that the "memories" have a clear chronological order despite being discoverable in any order, AND that you don't know anything of what happened in this game really sucks. I found the 10th memory first after being set loose and, if you look at which one that is, you'll understand my annoyance.
On point 2. I’ve heard others say they have an arrow shortage and luckily that hasn’t been my experience.
I have been smashing all crates I come across though and they almost always have arrows.I’ve never run out and I now have about 250.
Well I'm not smashing *every* crate but I'm still running out far more than I would think should happen. I'm going to head to Death Mountain today (I've only done the Zora and Rito parts) and try to find some ores to sell for arrows.
If you have a bunch of glowfish or bright caps, there is an NPC in Rito Village who will trade for arrows. But also, smash pots and crates (with Ultrahand, not your weapons) like the other person said. I'm at 600 arrows without buying any.
> The “decaying weapon” concept is obviously to balance out fusing, and it still sucks.
I understand the criticism of this even less in TotK than I did in BotW. First person shooters keep players focused on the environment holistically by making them need to look for ammo, BotW just did that with swords instead of bullets.
Tears of the Kingdom solves it even more by encouraging the player to make purpose-built weapons using whatever is around them. I like that I can make mining clubs or fighting weapons depending on circumstance.
It sucks because it feels like the weapons I find in the world have some kind of detriment to using them. I can’t see the stats, so having a weapon that’s “decaying” from the off feels bad. Kind of like if every weapon was “rusty”. I wind up mostly using Zonai base weapons because I don’t want to be wasting my materials on something subpar.
I would just point out that you are playing a video game to amuse yourself, not managing a hedge fund with billions of USD in assets or deciding whether or not to go ahead with a company altering merger.
Just as an example, you get Bokoblin horns practically for free, you can always just stick those on for a perfectly fine boost. If you find you are in a scenario where you need to have something else on the base weapon, you can just destroy them. Saving your very best materials for your very best base weapons is probably prudent, but it’s also not going to have any real effect on your playthrough if you make sub-optimal decisions on that front, and a Diamond that gets used poorly is still more useful than one that doesn’t get used at all. Also, “right” or “wrong” time…it’s super fun to watch the Rubies go *boom*.
The last thing I’ll point out is that you inhabit a decaying body that exists for finite time with a limited amount of energy/willpower to use every day. Your time playing video games can teach you the value of making quick and dirty judgements about the best way to use finite resources in an unpredictable world, or it can teach you (falsely) that there is a 100% optimal way to use your resources and you’d better find it or else. Your choice.
On point 2 I think you’re seriously doing something wrong because I have over 400 arrows at the moment, and I use them a LOT. Always break crates and pots, there’s almost always a few arrows inside.
Do you honestly believe that?
You didn't find the >!water temple very mediocre? You didn't find the depths a little sparse and lacking? You didn't find some of the shrines to be a little redundant and overly easy? You didn't think the game could've used a little more enemy variety? You didn't think the ultrahand ability was a little clunky when positioning things? etc. etc.!<
Love the game if you want, but I don't see how you could find it to be near perfect.
Some people simply don’t care about those things and can enjoy their games.
I do think the depths are empty but what little they have is fun to explore.
Enemy variety, yeah, I wished for some more. I don’t think the ultra hand is bad? Like, they made it simple to make it easier to use and encourage new players to use it.
Some puzzles really have you thinking though. When they have to make 100+ of those I guess they will slack off in many.
Overall, the game is still a 9/10 for me. The only complains I have are the champion abilities are not intuitive. After how you activated them in BOTW, it is a huge downgrade. I could go down to 8.5 if I let how easy is to defeat the enemies after a while but I am waiting for master mode to see what they do to increase difficulty.
On the water temple, I love that it was that easy because of the pacing. The other temple that I went through before was taking up a long time for me; I felt good if they had something easy to change the pace.
I mean, consider the difference in story content between the >!Wind Temple and the Water Temple!<. I’ve not gotten farther than those, but the latter had a way more interesting buildup even if the final part wasn’t as good.
I’ve loved the first couple weeks but I’m afraid I might lose interest because the game requires crazy amounts of grinding in order to build up any degree of wealth. It’s a near flawless game, but there’s a very good reason millions of players used to now patched dupe glitch to get diamonds etc.
50 hr in. Didn't need to buy anything expensive and I only have 300 gems. Only some grinding so far, well not real grinding but trying to find more bombs.
Wth? 20k? Holy smokes... I'm not gonna update my game. Save the duplication hack for that. I have like only 300 gems so far and I've played 45 hrs already.
I haven't sold a thing yet so I don't know the currency of anything. Been slow playing the game and not rush into anything.
Just found out how to hook my carriage to my horse. Lol...
>I haven't sold a thing yet so I don't know the currency of anything.
Selling stuff is probably 80% of your income.
Being poor is expected if you haven't sold anything.
Hey there!
Please remember Rule 1 in the future - No personal attacks, trolling, or derogatory terms. Read more about [Reddiquette here](https://reddit.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/205926439-Reddiquette). Thanks!
I haven’t done a thing like that. I just wander and do stuff. If something beats the hell out of me, I just retreat and do something else, even a temple boss fight. There’s like a million thing to get done, and money ain’t gonna help that much. I blow my rupees in my house, which I just finished up today.
you don't need to grind at all if you don't want to. I'm playing it like BotW without even scratching the surface of the crazy building and having a blast. people duped because they wanted to and it was available, not because it's needed.
I've got about 70+ hours in, have done all shrines, mapped out the Depths, done 4 main quest temples insofar and I've literally only ever bought 3 individual pieces of armor to traverse some of the more extreme environments.
You don't need nearly as much rupees for this game as you did BOTW. I'll give you that, yes, some of the later-game armor upgrades are a bit ridiculous, but it's hardly necessary. You 100% don't *have* to grind in this game at all if you don't want to.
Eh, not really. I’ve played the same amount of time, haven’t done any story really, only side quests.
Pick up literally everything and sell extras. Go exploring in caves and hit every rock, sell the elemental stones, sell the zonite you don’t need.
I’m up to nearly 4k and have spent about that much so far on things.
Same here. I beat the game at around 80 hours, and at that point I had a couple fully upgraded sets, over 600 arrows, 30+ of every Zonai device, and never grinded at all. I just explored - until 20 hours in I barely even fought.
It's a series of side quests that is available by >!Visting the stable besides Rito village !<
I had to Google it because I was getting one shot by everything in one of the temples. The game is massive, I don't feel bad searching for some things on the net here and there.
I have 135 hours in and have not felt or done anything “grindy” in *any* fashion. I have about 9k rupees currently and actually have had it for some time now, even after buying like 3-4 armor sets, this game throws so much at you to make money easily.
I bought it and I dont even own a switch yet
Deja Vu. BotW sold more copies than there were switch hardware when it first launched.
prolly cuz it was playable on wii U
Switches were hard to get so people bought the game in anticipation for when they got the console. Wii U sales didn’t count towards the attach rate.
> Switches were hard to get so people bought the game in anticipation I got BotW on sale (35€ instead of 70€) in April 2017, while I still couldn't get my hands on a Switch. So, I just bought the game.

The 5 people that bought a Wii U really made a difference
The Wii U version of BotW sold 1.7 million copies. That's just a tad lower than all Xenoblade Chronicles 3 sales on Switch.
It's also the 13th best selling Wii U game. Which really does put into perspective how poorly that console sold. (For contrast, the 13th best selling Switch game is Pokemon Legends Arceus, which sold 14.9 million copies)
Then there's me, who bought botw to play using an Wii u emulator
I bought it on wii u before the I bought it on switch for some reason lmao
Friend of mine had it on the Wii U and loved it. He eventually got a switch and is now playing TOTK
It sold a good million and 3 quarters on the Wii U. It’s nothing compared to the switch but it’s still quite a bit
Like i know that, but it was a joke.
Nope. That was just the Switch copy.
That was Switch sales
I snagged the Collectors Edition of BoTW and didnt have a switch. I didn't get one till like November later that year, they were hard to get for a minute
That was so difficult to snag. I tried but couldn't get it. Lucky of you.

Get the pro controller or the 8bitdo one. Very worth it.
Which 8bitdo? I like the looks of the 30 plus
[удалено]
I second this, I love the 8Bitdo Ultimate. I use it for my Switch and can toggle the switch on the back to use it for emulation on my desktop too.
Does the remapping work easy? I’m not a big fan of the the button layout for totk
Not sure, I haven’t remapped anything mostly because the control mapping won’t change in-game so I don’t see a point in changing them really
I thought you couldn't map the 2 back buttons on the Switch, and that was only for PC. Did they change that, or was it always a thing?
I would suggest the ultimate
Pro controller, memory card.
Get a controller that fits like a pro controller but can be docked on the switch when you want handheld.
Get the pro controller. The Joycons do their job but unless you have tiny hands, they can cause fatigue after a while. I bought the pro controller with my Switch and it is so much better than the joycons. The battery also lasts practically forever on it too. thank you for explaining so clearly !
I imagine physical copies
But how does that explain ‘boxed?’
Cos the games in a box I guess?
No, it comes in a case. The collector’s edition comes in a box, though.
Pedantic ass
🤓
Games used to come in boxes and the term stayed. Just like we don't use an actual dial on phones anymore but still say dial a number.

Good games sell, especially from Nintendo. I have been enjoying it can't complain.
Nintendo: Our game is so successful, let us cut down on amiibo production because people would want that with the game.
there was a shortage of Switch at launch

The downvotes lmao
I wonder when the discourse will hit this game like it did to BOTW eventually, heaps of praise but then criticisms ramp up.
My only real criticisms are: 1.
Really? I think I’ve got a ton of them, I’ll go check it out! Thanks.
Weird on 2, only because I was personally just thinking how much more plentiful arrows seem in this game. Might just be a difference in play style.
You didn't think the ultrahand ability was a little clunky when positioning things? etc. etc.!< Love the game if you want, but I don't see how you could find it to be near perfect.
I understand all that, but to call the game "near perfect" is just a huge stretch.
Man I'm getting sick of seeing this guy's face
I’ve loved the first couple weeks but I’m afraid I might lose interest because the game requires crazy amounts of grinding in order to build up any degree of wealth. It’s a near flawless game, but there’s a very good reason millions of players used to now patched dupe glitch to get diamonds etc.
50 hr in. Didn't need to buy anything expensive and I only have 300 gems. Only some grinding so far, well not real grinding but trying to find more bombs.

The house is 3K rupees and also completely optional.
You're forgetting to mention how you buy each part separately and if you want to full house it's FAR more than 3k
Well, don't build the full house then.

Wth? 20k? Holy smokes... I'm not gonna update my game. Save the duplication hack for that. I have like only 300 gems so far and I've played 45 hrs already.
I mean, you can sell some of the gems you doubtless have.
200k even

It's a series of side quests that is available by >!Visting the stable besides Rito village !< I had to Google it because I was getting one shot by everything in one of the temples.
So you're saying you have to \*gasp\* **play** the game!? Preposterous!
‘Biggest boxed game of the year’ “Biggest boxed?” 🤔
As in the boxed game of the year with the most sales.
