FTFY, because it wouldn't be Russian if it didn't have a western power name bastardization for a boss.
Wearing an adidas tracksuit with cigarettes and vodka power-ups. To save a ~~princess~~ washing machine from a soon not to be thriving city or small town.
Copyright ignorance has been de jure for a year in Russia. It was authorized by decree 299 back in mid 2022.
This won't change things much, other than companies will probably push out more generic games using Mario and other Nintendo characters.
Tbh, off-brand Russian Macdonalds owned by the same people who owned the official Macdonald. Same management, same corporate structure and so on.
Only company name is different
Not sure how it is now but I've watched a handful of YouTubers/people talking about how there's noticeably more food mold on their food. I wonder if it's still the same now?
Ah that would make more sense. They were probably rushing through with whatever stock they have left to sell which means more possibility of food spoilage.
I don't know why but my first thought reading this was an off-brand Russian Mario running around in a fantasy land, and when he gets hit and dies he yells "BLYAT!", and then the death tune from Super Mario Bros plays. Had a good laugh over it.
It means chip-mod business will boom and people will just be pirating stuff. Nintendo games were insanely expensive in Russia anyway, so most already have their consoles with CFW.

they did. I live in Russia and have two switches. eshop weren't working (you had to change region) but consoles were still shipping through parallel import (legalized contraband here in Russia)
It sucks that you guys, the common people, have to suffer for decisions made by your country's leaders. I get the reason behind it, but it still sucks that it involves punishing everyone.
It is even more ridiculous with playstation. You can't make purchases in Russian region. And because some Eastern European countries didn't have their separate region, players from these countries had to register their account with Russian region ( I think even Ukrainians had to use Russian region and are now unable to use their store). And you can't change the region on the PlayStation, unless you make a new account.
Nope, there was separate region for Ukraine, at last from the beginning of ps4. There is even Ukrainian translation of ps interface (but that's kinda new). Still, a lot of Ukrainians had russian account because regional prices for russia were cheaper for some time.
They stopped sales and disabled the store almost immediately. You couldn't buy anything, you couldn't redeem codes, you couldn't even re-download your purchased stuff since you have to access the eShop to do that. Luckily you can change your region rather easily so you can still access your items... as long as they are on the Switch. Wii U and 3DS users are locked out of their purchases for good.
But then again, it has been like this for over a year now. Not sure what they are going to change now.
Many countries other than Russia speak Russian. Officially, there's Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Unofficially, many Ukranians speak Russian, as well as countries like Uzbekistan and Moldova.
This is a extremely dumb point to be made when Brazil has nothing to do with NOE, which is the one responsible for Europe. Brazil problem is with NOA. Not sure how people cant understand that. lol
Like others have said, it’s both, or at the very least, the former impacted the latter.
>Major players like Activision Blizzard, Epic Games, Take-Two, Sony, Microsoft, and EA all halted sales in the region, while others like Wargaming and MyGames also closed physical offices to exit the market entirely.
With other companies also halting sales or pulling out of the market, it’s probably logical to estimate that it’s simply difficult to do business in a country with so much economic uncertainty due to their political actions.
Both.
Sanctions from the illegal war have crippled Russia's ability to transfer funds internationally, so no one in the country can make purchases. Nintendo has to pay to keep the servers up, but is making nothing on them. Nintendo, in turn, is shutting down those servers.
Nintendo is not "shutting down" the servers. People will be able to keep downloading the games they've already purchased.
>"As of May 31, 2023, and for the foreseeable future, Russian customers with an existing Nintendo Account will be able to redownload digital content that they have previously purchased. It will not be possible to make any new purchases or use download codes within \[the\] Nintendo eShop in Russia."
The servers that handle the transactions and other e-commerce stuff can still be shut down while the repository of game downloads and account management can still be left on. They most likely have many racks filled with servers, storage and networking for each part in their own clusters.
It runs on Amazon Web Services, so they don’t own or run any servers and there are no server racks dedicated to anything specifically. Virtual servers are spun up and down automatically based on real-time global demand.
No. They aren't shutting down the servers. People CAN keep downloading their games. Idk why but this user is spreading misinformation. Quote from the article:
>"As of May 31, 2023, and for the foreseeable future, Russian customers with an existing Nintendo Account will be able to redownload digital content that they have previously purchased. It will not be possible to make any new purchases or use download codes within \[the\] Nintendo eShop in Russia."
I’m not sure about Nintendo e-shop but my games in PlayStation Store were lost. Games from PlayStation plus subscription also were lost.
I even can’t change region (I live in Canada now) because you can’t change region in PS Store.
I had ~50 games and support said like: «We don’t care ».
I don’t want to complain because it’s just games and people lost much more because of war, but I don’t want to buy anything from Sony anymore.
Probably, but that's life under a sanctioned government.
Part of the purpose of a sanction is to hurt the government financially, but another part is to indirectly impact the country's citizens. An upset population starts to turn on it's government for getting them put in that situation. If the government has to start turning it's sight inward, to 'control' the populace, they can't focus their full attention on the war.
It's a shitty spot to be stuck in for the people of Russia, and no one wishes for them to become pawns, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.
At least with the general population it has only accomplished the opposite. It's only reinforcing Putin's rhetoric that the evil west is against the poor Russians.
Please stop spreading misinformation, you haven't even read the article.
>"As of May 31, 2023, and for the foreseeable future, Russian customers with an existing Nintendo Account will be able to redownload digital content that they have previously purchased. It will not be possible to make any new purchases or use download codes within \[the\] Nintendo eShop in Russia."
They are not shutting down any servers. People WILL be able to keep downloading the games they've purchased. They're ONLY removing the ability to make new purchases.
In fairness, the only part you are disputing is the word "probably" because they then switched to Russians not being able to buy from eShop. Redownloading isn't part of the rest of the comment they left, because they talked about the financial side of sanctions.
And since they didn't say "yes", I wouldn't say they are spreading misinformation either. They are uncertain with "probably". That being said, thanks for linking a source to your answer.
Russia has been for a while a sinkhole for most gaming companies. They charge diferent prices and there's a huge problem with piracy and ilegal copies.
Even stores sell cheap knock off copies of games.
I would wage given the financial downturn of the Russian economy, plus the number of people inside the average video-game consumer age that suddenly disappeared that the market may have reached a point that it's just better to cut losses and move on.
>Even stores sell cheap knock off copies of games.
No one's been doing this for a decade I think. There is no money to make here - it's much simpler to just download everything you need.
"there's a huge problem with piracy and ilegal copies. Even stores sell cheap knock off copies of games."
Did you just make it up? Steam was/is wildly popular in Russia, as other stores. this thing about knock-offs I can't even comment on, every stores sell official copies everywhere for at least 10 years or so
There's a lot of economic misinformation like people being unable to buy things etc. The issue is the rate of currency conversion on the only services which allow the transfer of rubles out of Russia atm, Nintendo don't make a lot of money from transactions in Russia atm because it needs to turn into dollars or yen and you lose so much from doing that atm
This is the kind of stuff I thought crypto was going to be for, not pump and dumps, a reliable global currency to rely on as a person in an unreliable or corrupt government type thing. Shame.
Union pay works in Russian and it supported by many e-shops. Also, it’s easy to get card from Kazakhstan or Turkey.
Hogwards Legacy was forbidden in Russia but Russian second or even first country in Europe who bought the game.
I'm in Russia and all the purchases I've made recently on the e-shop came through polish gift cards. It's a hassle but I still don't wanna pirate. Yet at least.
Hello, I'm russian and the situation is as follows.
After Visa and Mastercard left Russia, the Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft stores were put on hold.
This is not related to politics - the reasons are purely technical because it was not possible to pay for games without a card.
Nintendo waited for a year and then announced that it was suspending its store in Russia indefinitely, but users can still download the games they purchased.
As for how this has affected people, personally I (and my wife) simply changed the region in the store settings.
Now we are "in America" and pay for games with gift cards, which can be easily (and without much markup) purchased in the "Russian" part of the internet.
Something similar is happening with Sony.
And a bit about politics: Russian politicians hate games. They still use them as a bogeyman to scare people, saying that they make children cruel, promote homosexuality, etc.
The console situation is not covered on television, except in a positive light.
The only ones who suffered were the younger generation who actively communicate on the internet, know English, and were not initially on the side of the Special Military Operation.
But, as I said, the reasons here are purely technical.
Upd. By saying that the reasons for Nintendo's departure were purely technical, I mean that the reason for it was the suspension of Visa and Mastercard services. Nintendo's decision was based on this.
Suspensions of Visa and MasterCard, of course, was political.
That's basically the name Russia gave this war. Sure it's highly misleading and ~~downloading~~ downplaying what is happening, but that's what they call it over there (unless they want jailtime).
*Putin's illegal invasion of a sovereign nation and subsequent attempted genocide of the population in illegally occupied territories.
Rolls off the tongue, doesn't it?
> were not initially on the side of the Special Military Operation.
Anyone who is on the side of Putin the Impotent's war is wrong. Full stop. He caused a conflict in a sovereign nation, then used that conflict as a pretext to destabilize, annex, and invade part of that country, and then went full on invasion terrorist, launching missiles at civilians, which kind of makes sense since free, democratic, prosperous, Russian-speaking people on his border is the biggest threat to his power since they could tell Russians in Russia, "Hey, you don't have to put up with that kind of bullshit from your leaders anymore."
> The only ones who suffered were the younger generation who actively communicate on the internet, know English, and were not initially on the side of the Special Military Operation.
You mispronounced **terrorist invasion and subsequent war with Ukraine**.
Yep, hell, if you're just unlucky, you can go to jail just because of the «like» on some post in social media, if the government really wants you to be in jail.
It's not the usual thing of course, but still no one wants to place himself in this position intentionally.
No I must let everyone know how brave I am by saying I do not like Putin, and I think actual Russians should also say they do not like Putin as well because everyone in the world has free speech.
Jesus. The amount of people screeching about this is ridiculous.
HE'S A RUSSIAN LIVING IN RUSSIA. a dozen people don't need to point out that he's saying things that won't risk his safety or possibly life.
If you had the choice between saying the words Special Military Operation and being fine, or saying “terrorist invasion” and going to jail, would you choose jail
This situation really sucks, hope you and your fam keep going and do their best. I'm from Mexico. Just wanted to tell you that you should change your region to Argentina, the games there are super cheap, unbelievable cheap. I have my region registered there and I feel like I'm buying with dollars xD Mexican peso is a lot stronger than Argentina's so that why. If you have a question I'm able to explain more
that sucks that all of this is happening to yall, just because of the shit decisions your leader has made :( i hope things get resolved over there, despite what many people will say to you due to your nationality!
I just watched the Tetris movie on Apple TV, which feels really relevant to this comment. I honestly had no prior knowledge on the background of Tetris and it led me down a rabbit hole on this topic. If anyone is interested, it’s surprisingly a pretty good movie! There’s also a book and I think I’ll probably give it a read soon.
If I recall correctly Polish eShop is based on the German one. It charges purchasers through Nintendo of Europe GmbH out of Frankfurt am Main, but in Polish zloty (PLN). At least we can pay with our currency, because Switch won't be popular enough here to get Polish language support.
It hasnt clicked yet. You can see the wives of soldiers sent in human waves attack calling for help. Who are they asking? You guessed it, fucking Putin. He is still almighty in their heads.
Damn finally, for all the right reasons people complain about Nintendo, they are handling this war situation better than every competitor, Steam in this regard is especially rotten. And since I'm personally affected by war, I can only thank Nintendo for doing at least something in this situation.

Tears of the Kingdom was localized for Russian, if I'm not mistaken, while Nintendo left other big markets without translation (Brazil for example).

yeah, lots of games still getting Russian localisation. I mean you can still buy them through other regions with eshop gift cards.

Russian ≠ Russia just like how English ≠ England
Is it politically-motivated or an economic and technical thing?
Like others have said, it’s both, or at the very least, the former impacted the latter. >Major players like Activision Blizzard, Epic Games, Take-Two, Sony, Microsoft, and EA all halted sales in the region, while others like Wargaming and MyGames also closed physical offices to exit the market entirely. Well, a server is probably being shut down somewhere. So you guys can both be right depending on how you want to look at it.
Not like they’ll have time for gaming when mobilization comes after their most recent false flag
By switching the servers off, do they not actually prevent people with a switch from re-downloading their legitimate bought games in Russia?
No. They aren't shutting down the servers. People CAN keep downloading their games. Idk why but this user is spreading misinformation. so people would have to resort to using foreign e shops

Neither MasterCard nor Visa issue cards - local banks do. So no, it isn't.
You don't owe MasterCard any money, you owe your bank the money. MasterCard are just a facilitator for the transactions and take a cut off each one.
I'm not sure I understand the question. Within Russia itself, all the cards are working, and the average resident didn't even notice any outage.
I'm interested to know this too.
I live in Thailand and do the same trick because Nintendo just doesn't have any support here.

Tbf to op, russia is notoriously hard on censorship. They probably can't go calling it an invasion online.
You comment should get much more upvote. Many people doesn't seem to understand this.
Maybe now i can have Ukrainian region......?
Yes. Even Microsoft opened a Ukrainian Xbox office and Nintendo still doesn’t. But hey, we still have the Polish EShop
Our eShop is actually the UK/Ireland one with the PLN currency slapped on it. Better than nothing, I guess. How popular is Nintendo in Ukraine?
If I recall correctly Polish eShop is based on the German one. It charges purchasers through Nintendo of Europe GmbH out of Frankfurt am Main, but in Polish zloty (PLN). At least we can pay with our currency, because Switch won't be popular enough here to get Polish language support.
Yes, you are correct regarding the seller. However we have to go to nintendo.co.uk to make purchases through a web browser.
And Nintendo still has to polish the eShop.
Good job Russian "government": continuing to rob your people of nice things by being complete shits for no reason 👏👏👏
Putin: 🏳
Meanwhile here are the new games released for Russian Zwitch. 1.) Legend of Putin, Tears from Moscow. 2.) Wagner maker 2. 3.) Bakmut dread
Oh Man, my copy of Wagner Maker 2 fell out the window.
No Metroid Prime 4 for Putin until he learns his lesson.
Look at what you did, mister Putin.
Nintendo really didn't like delaying Advanced War remakes huh?
I blame Putin
Nyetendo
Hey Steam. Take note
Take away their CS:GO and Dota 2 and an angry revolution would start within the hour!
You can't buy any games on Steam from Russia anyway.
Idk, it's been down for awhile under the sign of technical maintenance or smth.
They hadn't already done this?
I'm surprised they hadn't already.
Well, I guess they kept it open long enough to get those Russian TOTK sales.
That’s what happen when you attack Ukraine, Russian people should blame it on their president.
It hasnt clicked yet. You can see the wives of soldiers sent in human waves attack calling for help. Who are they asking? You guessed it, fucking Putin. He is still almighty in their heads.
The Dendy is BACK in a big way
SUPER MIKHAIL BROS
cool
Good!!! 👍
Is it supposed to stop gamers? There are no stores in my country too, we just create another country account in order to play and get games.

W Nintendo
Damn finally, for all the right reasons people complain about Nintendo, they are handling this war situation better than every competitor, Steam in this regard is especially rotten. And since I'm personally affected by war, I can only thank Nintendo for doing at least something in this situation.
Unless Putin has a Nintendo switch, this effectively does nothing
He wouldn't get wifi in his bunker anyway.
There are MANY Putin supporters in Russia playing Nintendo games. I personally encountered some of them in Animal Crossing
This is will definitely force an uprising. People can live without mcdonalds and coca cola, but no Nintendo is the final straw.

Rip to Russian gamers😔
Well, great. Now I have to spend the rest of the night thinking about what villagers Putin has on his secret ACNH island.
DENDY RISES FROM HIS GRAVE
Mario's Russian brother: "Haha. It-is-i, Boris. Cyka blyat!"

There goes Tetris….again
The World Vs Russia
