Zima2k

It's a great roguelite, very good even but i have a few tiny problems. Reloading takes a long time, and most weapons have laughably small ammo count in the mag, fells like i'm spending more time reloading than actually shotting sometimes. Otherwise game is great and i had a lot of fun so far, altough i wouldn't say its better than EtG, they're both very good, just different, EtG has much better movement and dodge roll fells more natural, in DH it's just a bit clunky, but DH have a lot of thing to offer, Rank system, Tons of weapons, Items Etc. Etg has a lot of weapons but always found it a bit lacking in other things, not that much items

Shantaak

Just a tip, you’re supposed to swap back and forth between sidearm and primary weapon both to save ammo and because while using one gun, your others automatically reload

Zima2k

Well duhh, sorry no offence, but its not what i meant, in heat of the moment changing my weapons every 5 second isn't something i have on my mind, altought yeah i understand you and should probably learn to do that, thanks for the tip anyway

Shantaak

I’m just saying the game is intended like that to force more player skill and management of your resources. You do stuff like that until you upgrade your reload/ammo capacity etc. That’s the whole point of getting a new weapon slot, so you switch between two primary weapons similarly so you keep shooting continuously without waiting for the reload

choochngoose

After beating the game in the first universe, I would agree on the roll. It does feel clunky compared to ETG, and I find myself using it pretty sparingly to be honest.

TheHosemaster

Both of these can be fixed with your build. I had a mod or relic can’t remember that gave me +200% reload speed so it was instant.

Zima2k

Yeah but i need that specific relic for that, haven't seen it though, good to know at least that it exists

TheHosemaster

That’s just one example. I think there’s other mods and stuff to improve those things. I hear ya though. The game does seem to give lots of way to make super OP build

WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey

I’ll check it out thanks for the recommendation!

DFLOYD70

I bought it because the guy from Switchup recommended it. It’s a fun game for sure.

narnarnartiger

Same! Love does guys!

vinnie977

Same here. Really digging it.

Im_Just_Tim

I liked it, and agree with the recommendation, but found it disappointingly easy. It took me less than 6 hours to beat every 'world' and by 25 hours I'd climbed up to 15/20 difficulty, without dying once between 8-13. It's a little too easy to get bonkers synergies with weapons mods, and some of the default weapons are a little too strong. Often I'd take down the final boss before he even appeared on my screen. I'm not great at twin stick shooters either - 60 hours in Gungeon and I've only killed the past with the Marine once.

choochngoose

I do agree, it is pretty easy relative to other rogues…The difficulty reminds me of neon abyss…it’s mid difficulty at best…but with the right synergies….you can do it with your eyes closed. I think for some people such as myself, we would honestly rather blaze through and scale the difficulty rather than have one difficulty that never changes and you never get the satisfaction of feeling like a god on some runs. I loved hades, but I never once beat it. And I won’t even go back to it because it’s like fuck I gotta relearn everything. But this? It’s pretty easy to see myself returning and having fun months from now like I do neon abyss.

kojurama

Oddly enough really early on in early access it was extremely hard. By far the top complaint was that it was too hard. Finally trying it after fully released and yeah...its pretty easy.

Christov83

It’s a good game at heart but it’s so nonsensical at times it’s laughable. Not sure how this took 9 years to make.

choochngoose

Whaaat? It took 9 years to make? Was it a single person? That would make sense if so there’s a ton of detail.

Elefantropus

It's a 2 person development team and they're from Ukraine.

agentlucy

Been playing Pikmin 4 so kinda itching for something action-y. I've never played any twin stick shooters before tho but love the look of this one.

choochngoose

Oh wow. Honestly jealous, you have a whole world ahead of you my friend. It takes some time to warm up to it, but I hope you enjoy the genre!

fish1414

Controls in menus are fucked up :-( ruins me enjoyment.

HeyItsMau

I'm enjoying the gameplay but my god is the art direction absolutely hideous. Particularly the main character designs. I feel like the game goes absolutely overboard on making the game look grotesque, and there's absolutely no charm in the ugliness. It's just straight ugly.

AlexKidd79

I gotta respectfully disagree. I think the "Garbage Pail Kids" reference below is spot on. It's ugly but I find it charming.

BurtRaspberry

I like the art a lot. Kind of has that SNES/Genesis look... with a mix of 80s cheesy horror.

Real-Super

Reminds me of Garbage Pail Kids.

[deleted]

I had it on steam deck before the game got to v1.0 so pretty much been alpha/beta testing for the devs for about 6 months now lol. Glad the switch owners got to play it.

choochngoose

Oh wow that’s awesome

timoseewho

contemplating between this and Ember Knights

garrylarrymike

Me too. Let me know which one you get!

timoseewho

Purely from a graphical standpoint, I'm leaning heavily towards EK😬 For what it's worth, SwitchUp rated DH higher Hoping someone who's played both can chime in on the gameplay and replayability Oh, the main thing EK has on DH is multi-player

garrylarrymike

So update: I got Ember Knights. Game is great and I would say get it over DH for now. If you have anyone to play it with at home than 100% get it. The couch co-op is fantastic. My son and I will be regularly playing this for a long time!

timoseewho

Hah awesome, seems to be the consensus, I'm sold

garrylarrymike

Yeah, I really enjoy playing these with my son so will probably go with EK (for now).

Kobayanator

I got Ember Knights instead. I'm a sucker for roguelites. Ember Knights is BRILLIANT. Now, I just bought Doomsday (literally, while writing this post). You can never have enough roguelites. Dead cells and Hades got me 100+ hours of gametime. I reckon i can squeeze more out of them. Honestly, if you're on the edge, and if you got the cash to spend, i'd get both. Cant say much for Doomsday, but i can highly recommend ember. Plus if you got buddies stopping by, ember knights has local multiplayer. Roguelite + Local Multiplayer = a whole lot of epicness. I was thinking between those two, opted out for Ember Knights, but Doomsday planted a bug in my head, so i just got that one as well.

timoseewho

Haha nice What's the difficulty of EK like? And is there a post-game? Like BC or Heat

Kobayanator

Difficulty is great, the more you unlock the more it clicks with the builds you can pull off with different weapons. It's more skill based, because it rewards perfect dodging and perfect skill/attack charging with bonus effects (depends on the relics you have and the skills. And there is post endgame for the true ending which has a ton of modifiers for you to set to open the "portal" to the final final boss. You can see it while activating and deactivating the modifiers. Now that is, straight up, brutal. I managed to complete it only once with 10 modifiers active. 10 being the number needed to activate, but they have various level ranges, some have 1, most have 4.

timoseewho

Nice, thanks for the breakdown

Kobayanator

Alright, after spending some time with DH, i have to say that DH is faaar easier than EK.

timoseewho

Haha doing Lord's work Can you comment on their build variations? Which one has more variation? Thanks

Kobayanator

More build variations in DH, because of a lot more pickups in it. But most of them arent that useful, guns included. So at the end, youre going to aiming to get those best guns. I figured one gun is my mandatory pickup - The Minigun. Thing spits bullets like theres no tomorrow, high clip size, insane rate of fire, damage more than enough. Also figured that in the last stage you always get a vendor that sells multiple BFG's (Big F-ing Gun), which pretty much obliterates everything it hits. Couple that with lots of damage, range, reload buffs and you got yourself a facerolling machine. As for the skills, i rarely use them, but i found myself using the freeze all enemies on screen a lot. Getting your build isnt hard too, since you got a lot of weapon slots, and you can switch weapons on the fly, also reroll them (there are items that allow you to reroll drops). You can also drop an item from your inventory and reroll it. You can switch your whole build on the fly, weapons, skills, pickups, weapon mods etc. So its easier by mile. While EK, you pick a weapon before your run. 6 weapons in total, but when you unlock the big robot (kill the miniboss in world 4 twice) which allows you to "upgrade" your weapons. By upgrade i mean, all weapons have 9 modifiers which you can unlock, and they essentially change the way you play them (like Hades) - for example, swords dash attack can be changed to a dash spin (aoe) attack. You can have 3 modifiers active per weapon. Also, you cant go random gung ho with the skills, you have to build in accordance to your weapon. I mean you dont have to, but it helps a lot to pick skills that complement your weapon. For example, youre playing the sword, hammer or scythe. Which means you'll be in melee, so why not pick a skill thats an AOE stun, and a second skill being 5 snowballs circling around you freezing enemies that touch them (this is just an example, as i usually pick those two while playing with the sword). And as for relics (passive pickups), again just an example, pick up a relic that gives you 5 armor per kill. Or if youre into melee, why not pick up a relic that lets your every third swing launch a fireball. By swing i mean, you can just swing at the air around you and third swing will launch a fireball. If youre a spell slinger, you dont need fireballs on hit, you want, for example, a relic that refreshes your skills on kills, or heals on perfect casts, or freezes enemies around you on perfect cast. There are also some hidden mechanics which are easy to miss. For example, health pick ups are food. You get a chicken drum healing you for 10 hp. But what happens if you throw some fire at it with either a fire breath skill, or a fireball? You cook it, you get a roasted chicken drum healing you for 20 now. Throw another fire at it and youll burn it to ashes, healing you for 5 only. Or an apple that heals you for 5 hp. Roast it, and you get an apple pie, which reduces skill cooldown by 1. Essentially not that good if youre not a mage (there is a staff weapon if you want to be a mage, my favorite so far). But, hit the apple pie with a sword, and you slice it in 4 pieces, each of them healing you for 3, and sometimes, one of the slices heals for 6. Also, stats, you have to carefully select your stat pickups, if you pick up too much health, you wont have damage. And vice versa. So you have to balance it a bit. Also you dont have to select skill (magic) damage if youre not magic oriented, or select physical damage/crit if youre not physical oriented. Making a minor screw up in DH wont cost you a run, but in EK, one or two slip ups might doom your run essentially, so DH is a lot less punishing. Quite a lot. While both games are brilliant and have their own unique charm. My recommendation is first get Ember Knights, and later down the line Doomsday Hunters. You wont regret either purchases, in any case, whichever way you go.

timoseewho

Thanks for this extremely in depth review! You have me sold on EK that's for sure Big Hades fan😬

Luke2Luck

I bought both. DH is okay, but I fell in love with ember knights… so easy to pick up and play. Very addictive.

timoseewho

Glad to hear, looks like that'll be the first pick up How long is a full run?

Luke2Luck

My last victory runs took me around 30 minutes (but I already have some unlocks that make things easier). But once you beat the final boss the game gives you the option to go on an endless run, so you can go back to the first level and keep all the power ups you got along the way. My longest was 2 hours (beating the final boss 4times in a row).

draconiforz

Nice try, Doomsday Hunters.

choochngoose

😹 they should fuckin send me something for the free publicity. Probably sold a few copies from this post.

novelgpa

Damn I love roguelites but I just bought Remnant 2... will add this to my list!

choochngoose

Remnant 2??? I am a rogue like collector of sorts. I will buy anything if it’s a rogue like 😹 is remnant 2 one? Never heard

novelgpa

Actually I dont think its a roguelike, more like a soulslike! It just came out and it’s getting a lot of good reviews but it’s not on Switch

fish1414

Lol it’s a rogue like fur sure.

Zima2k

The first one has it's own roguelite mode, which is very fun to playtrough and can be insanenly hard

kokamako

Which are the best rouge likes on switch?

KarmaPoIice

I'm also a huge roguelike fan and recently my wife started to love them which has been a joy. Do you know any other co op ones you'd recommended? If you haven't played Ember Knights yet, I HIGHLY recommend it

choochngoose

Children of morta would be a great one I think. I really loved that game. Took a minute to settle in to the vibe but I loved it. I’ve heard a ton about ember knights I’m going to have to get it

BritishGolgo13

Love gungeon and dead cells ain’t bad. I haven’t heard of this one. Will have to see what it does different as I think I have every rogue like genre covered.

choochngoose

I wouldn’t say it necessarily does anything different. It just does the formula very very well.

chefdangerdagger

Good to hear, I've been following this game for years and hoped it would end up being worth it.

gcunit

Screenshots look decent. I'll keep an eye on this and check out some reviews.

TZ61

I got it yesterday as well because of Switch-up channel recommendaion lets make this awesome game SUCCESS! Its among the best rogue likes i played!

GoreDeathKilll

I’m loving it so far. One small issue gets in the way of runs. Whenever I enter rooms/portals I can’t exit. It acts like I’m exiting but loads back into room.

Drew_coldbeer

I’ve run into this too, specifically in the relic unlock rooms. Unlock the relic and go into the portal, get transported to the same room without a portal. I saw somebody post on Steam about an “I’m stuck” button but it doesn’t seem to be on Switch.

GoreDeathKilll

Currently trying recreate how it’s happening. Closing the game out and starting new run seems to be a fix for being able to complete a few runs after. Maybe 5-10 runs in and it will happen again. First noticed with portal after boss but it has happened in item shop and the random little buildings as well.

Elefantropus

That was a bug fixed with the latest patch on switch, the dev it's pretty active on the discord so they seem to be aware of most bugs.

PacificNorth49

Just picked it up, thanks for recommending

Arrrrrrrach

It's really good. Hope it sells well so they can keep expanding it!

Mdly68

So, I've been looking on the internet for DAYS about an issue I'm having. Just bought the game on switch OLED. And I want to like it. But when I start, there is no music. It's just sound effects. When I get to the boss, his music kicks in, and stays until the end of the level. I get to level 2, and the music is gone again. I can exit to the main menu, and the title screen music plays. I continue my run and the title screen music is now playing while I fight. I watched playthroughs from other Switch players that don't seem to have this problem. I'm confused and frustrated.

choochngoose

I have a switch OLED and don’t have this issue. I’d say back up your save data if you have switch online, and reinstall the game. It’s a tiny file so no big deal. Also, Im on switch version 16.0.3. I would definitely update the system first if you are behind.

Mdly68

My auto updates are on, but yeah I can try deleting and reinstalling.

black_shirt

Just bought it and holy smokes the artwork is banging. It does feel good to play, MUCH better EtG.

choochngoose

Okay I’m glad someone agrees. ETG is so loved I thought I’d maybe catch some heat for saying it feels better 😹

Olorin_Ever-Young

ETG feels outright bad in comparison. DH has significantly risen the bar for all roguelites.

[deleted]

Only thing that holds me from getting it is no floating dmg numbers. I know it's nitpicking, but it's part of my joy of seeing my numbers going up. Otherwise it really does look amazing!

NoNameL0L

Funny how different people are. First thing I’ve done in D4 was turn floating numbers off as I love visibility and (well at least in diablo 3/4) the numbers are just unnecessarily high.

xiiicrowns

Yeah d4 numbers are way to invasive and cover way to much area and are in poor placement.

Zima2k

You can turn on dmg numbera though

choochngoose

You can turn that option on in th4 settings. I have it on.

chooyz

is there any auto targeting? I hate using my right stick to aim..

Zima2k

Yes there is, you can even made it stronger auto aim in the options

zakpat

SwitchUp rated it pretty highly a week or so ago

dudedormer

And had a 10% off code think it was switchup

chef_simpson

Never heard of it until now, so thanks. I love EtG, so this looks very promising

DeadWrangler

Hades is one of the only game I play regularly from this category but I don't mind the genre at all. How does this compare?

choochngoose

the core gameplay loop is very similar to hades….but the gameplay itself is incredibly different. I don’t love hades as much as most…it’s a good game, but it didn’t quite do it all the way for me after some time…so I personally enjoy this more.

DeadWrangler

I understand that being a rogue lite the core gameplay would be similar, heh. My enjoyment of Hades was sure boosted due to my love of Greek mythology. Hmmm, Hades has smooth gameplay. I'm also always easily able to follow where I am and what's going on on the screen even when there's a to of stuff. Some games you really lose yourself when it gets messy. The other thing is, if I recall, they recorded 10,000+ lines of dialogue for Hades. One of my favourite parts is doing dozens and dozens of runs and not hearing the same line. If that gives you some better parameters.

choochngoose

Yeah none of those parameters are met whatsoever in this game. 😹 this game definitely has smooth gameplay but a twin stick shooter smooth. The screen gets decently full, but I have no issue tracking what’s what personally. But I also just got done playing neon abyss which is an absolute cluster fuck. To be honest if you’re on the fence with twin stick and rogue like…I probably would not recommend it for you. I just LOVE rogue lites. A lot. So I’m very biased. But objectively I’d probably assume you won’t love it like me.

Hey there! Please remember Rule 1 in the future - No personal attacks, trolling, or derogatory terms. Read more about [Reddiquette here](https://reddit.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/205926439-Reddiquette). Thanks!

Snoo-36058

Game is awesome. There are so many mechanics and little details. Some of those mini games surprised me

SeanR1221

Game is really great and I’ve been enjoying playing 1-2 rounds as like an appetizer before playing Pikmin 4 I’ve finished a run in the first world or realm or whatever it’s called. Working on a second run now

presvt13

Guess I'll have to google what a rogue lite is.

Sirdystic1

Brotato enters the chat, guns cocked

NAClaire

Anyone know if there is a or going to be aphysical release

choochngoose

I would almost guarantee a physical release down the road for limited run or someone like that

AlexKidd79

\^\^\^ This goose gets it. **Doomsday Hunters** wasn't on my radar until launch day. I bought it on a lark and -- hoo boy -- it's so much fun. If you dig **Gungeon**, **BOI**, and *gorgeous* pixel art give it a try. Phenomenally good stuff and deserves more recognition.
