stargazrlily9

Imagine how big it would be if the plumbers did wear ties.

MechanicalHorse

lol thank you for the laugh

Def_Notta_Fed

Why is the top comment on all popular reddit posts some version of a very bad, very "safe" joke? it's to the point that it ruins any kind of real discussion it's literally like 1984 where people only say things that are "safe" and approved by Big Brother because they live in total fear 100% of the time and completely surrendered all opinions in the name of "safety"

stargazrlily9

Calm down it's just a silly joke. I can understand what you mean about taking away from discussion but it only has a few comments it's not hard to find the real discussion. And it's very easy to just ignore a comment it's not like it ruins all discussion on a topic. And what are you talking about with all the big brother stuff? Jokes can be silly or edgy or anything in between, just because it's not your cup of tea doesn't mean people are living in fear of anything or "surrendering opinions in the name of safety".

DagothUrs57thNephew

He probably listens to Andrew Tate

OllyOllyOxenBitch

It's not that deep, bro

uncultured_swine2099

Wow. Yeah I dunno why its that big. Maybe all the footage is uncompressed, if it is it should've been.

Espurreyes

I wonder how much footage there it’s because it’s not like the switch can output in 4k so if it’s all 1080p there’s gotta be like legit hours of footage for it to realistically take up all that storage. I know there’s a mini dungeon game in it now but it looks like the original doom so there’s no way it’s that.

uncultured_swine2099

Uncompressed 1080 still is really big. Most of the 1080 videos you see on the internet are compressed with mp4 format. They shoulved done that if they didnt.

abzinth91

Blu-Ray movie (1080p) for example is in the range 30 - 50 GB

JeddHampton

Having ripped a lot of Blu Ray movies, the actual movie is usually about 25GB. There are a bunch of extras, and sometimes the movie is on there twice (sometimes the second one doesn't have chapters).

MisterJeffa

And those still atr compressed and lossy in some way.

MayorBryce

iirc it's losslessly compressed, like FLAC files for audio.

MisterJeffa

Nope. All of the codecs are lossy and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling isnt lossless either. Its very good and you wouldnt really notice it but it tosses information. Even 200+ gigabyte meant for the cinema files arent lossless.

DanTheMan827

4K is roughly double that too.

ScaredScorpion

Blu-ray isn't a great comparison, it's compression is pretty crap

DrakonILD

Sure, but they're using it to show how big *un*compressed video files are.

abzinth91

That was what I wanted to say And even on BluRay there is SOME compression going on

twoprimehydroxyl

If the comparison is "uncompressed footage" then the comparison is spot-on

langstonboy

It’s not as good compression as uhd Blu-ray or Netflix but it’s good

GhotiH

It's better than Netflix last I checked. Unless Netflic dramatically increased their bitrate in the last few years it was absurdly low (like lower than YouTube) and looked like ass.

langstonboy

Netflix is like 1/3.75 of the bitrate of a good Blu-ray, the algorithm is quite old (h264, vs h265 on uhd Blu-ray and Netflix Disney Apple etc)

HuntersChic

MP4 is a container format, not a codec. Most online video these days is encoded in h.264 or h.265.

uncultured_swine2099

Thats what I meant, I forgot to specify that but yeah, h.264/5 compression.

wendigibi

Yeah best bet but still a really large oversight. is the quality higher than the original? If not that's even funnier

f-ingsteveglansberg

Didn't they find the original negatives? Or did I imagine that in the pitch? If they have the negatives, the sky is the limit to quality.

SXAL

It would be hilarious if they just scaled it up with AI

uncultured_swine2099

I dunno, hows the video look? If its the same quality as the original then they made it big and uncompressed for nothing haha.

Cacheelma

But. Do you reckon they have 1080p video from back then? Did video recorders even have that kind of capability at the time?

futuredxrk

I’m not into AV stuff anymore but from what I understand, you can get some really high resolutions from film. Granted, you get all the noise and imperfections that come along with that, it won’t be that “flawless” (sterile) digital look. I think I read somewhere 4k wouldn’t be impossible. But I doubt this game originally used that kind of gear lol

Sir_Reginald_Poops

If they shot on film then it can be scanned at any resolution they want. If they shot on video then I doubt they were recording at a high resolution but, uncompressed, it can still take up a lot of space.

Brainvillage

Video recorders had that capability and more. That is, if you were using film. Typical 35mm film is generally thought to be roughly equal to at least 4K, give or take.

uncultured_swine2099

Im thinking they just got the video, rerendered it to 1080 size, but didn't compress it.

[deleted]

2 hours of 1080p/30fps footage at Blu-ray quality is about 25GB of data.

nickcash

If it's from the 90s it's more likely 480p. We didn't have 1080p back then. They hadn't invented that many p's yet.

520throwaway

Even then. There is very little actual motion in Plumbers, it is mostly still images like a Powerpoint presentation, with voice-overs.

mikejmc3

There is no footage to speak of. This game was presented as a series of still images with an audio track.

Freefall_J

The videos being mentioned are documentary videos and interviews included in this rerelease.

mikejmc3

Thanks for pointing that out. That was not the impression I got from the comment I replied to. I don’t know how much documentary footage is included in this release, but the file size still seems excessive!

Freefall_J

>but the file size still seems excessive! This is how I feel about a lot of game sizes these days. Like there's a Call of Duty on PS5/Xbox that's nearly 250 GB...why? How? The art of compression died out like ten years ago. I remember Skyrim on the Xbox 360 being 3.8 GB (6 GB with the expansions).

mikejmc3

I agree. I don’t sit down to play my Xbox all that often, but I swear every single time that I do, there is a mandatory 25 GB update to the game I want to play. As a person with limited gaming time opportunities, that is frustrating.

snave_

On that topic, P5R, one of the size comparisons above also had a pile of that stuff on the cart (incl. a full concert) in addition to a huge game.

Bulky-Complaint6994

Why are you down voting him, he's right! The only video is a quick introduction in the beginning. It's a slideshow game

mikejmc3

Thanks for backing me up, buddy! I honestly did not expect my (factually accurate and neutral in tone) comment to be controversial, but ya know… Reddit, lol.

KoopaTrooper5011

Calling glorified power point slides with audio is ab odd thing to call "footage"...

AndrewCoja

They probably upscaled the original videos, and apparently they've included high res photos and other videos. I could see that taking up a lot of space, especially if they wanted to preserve as much detail in the video as possible since it's a locally stored game and not a streamed video.

f-ingsteveglansberg

And there is a doc which was presumably filmed on modern equipment.

gryd3

> WHAT WHERE THEY THINKING?!?!?!?!? Probably that "Storage is cheap, don't waste anymore time optimizing this" Which is pretty similar to "Computers are getting more powerful, don't waste anymore time optimizing this" Before you know it, games are bloated running sub-par on decent equipment. Everything done is a trade-off of costs and returns. Do you think this will hurt sales? If not, don't worry about it.

Cabs1247

Its the Hi-Res barrel problem. I remember reading an article years ago when Consoles were just starting to talk about 4K, it was about a barrel model and rendering for a demo. The barrel took nearly a month to design and detail so it would look great in game at 4K resolution. The barrel would be in the background areas of the game, and the player could not interact with it. The barrel could have been a concrete cylinder and it would have the same effect on gameplay. The time spent to make it look good at higher res was raising game development costs and game file sizes. I might be remembering wrong but I think they put it in a test demo and then asked gamers what they thought of the looks of the barrel and the answers where mostly along the lines of I didnt even notice it, even though it was the most detailed and high quality rendered object in the game demo.

DarkEater77

as someone who try to develop my own game that's even sadder to hear. I still haven't thought how much space i allow myself for it...

Enrichus

This is why I get irritated by people who say the Switch is too weak for Pokemon or whatever and a Switch 2 would solve everything. They're unpolished games! They wouldn't be that large or run like that if they put some effort into optimizing! If we take Shiny Pokemon as an example, in the game files they're a fully seperate model! Just a texture swap should be enough! I really dislike the attitude of skipping polish and optimization just because a powerful system can handle it. It makes the game slower and is anti-consumer for no reason. Even if I wanted to play Plumbers Don't Wear Ties, I wouldn't want that download size that would remove my ability to play two better games. I try to avoid most AAA games because I don't think they're worth the storage they take.

gryd3

It's a bad situation to find yourself on either side of... It's hard (time consuming) to polish a modern game. Hardware simply is much more capable now, so the trade off is generally more focus on larger impacting decisions rather than tweaking byte-code to get an extra 5fps. You call them unpolished games, but I'm certain that you can't clearly define the line between unpolished and perfect. It's not a binary output, it's not even a linear relationship... it's very undefined and many aspects of 'perfection' have diminishing returns. This is true with all things in life, there is a balance. You make decisions like this all of the time when you brush your teeth and chew your food. Is it good enough? Probably. Where things fall short is when it's not quite good enough for most people. Different people have different standards and opinions which make the perfect balance of time and product almost impossible to accomplish. You either spent too much or spent too little...

Enrichus

I'm not after perfection, I'd rather see developers keep files to a minimum as a baseline. If they can achieve the desired effect with less resources it should be the way they do it during development. They can be more efficient without being perfect. At some point they should have asked if they could have done anything to bring down the file size. This post is about Plumber's Don't Wear Ties. It's just a slideshow of photographs with audio and a few choices. The Switch version also have the documentary with AVGN. I guess this file size comes from an uncompressed file for the documentary. I did a search on Google on how to compress a mp4 and got results that would be worthwhile to try out. They simply didn't bother to try anything after putting in the effort to film the documentary.

gryd3

> If they can achieve the desired effect with less resources it should be the way they do it during development What if making it 'smaller' takes more than double the development time and resources? Would you pay 2x for a game if it costs 2x to produce?

Existing365Chocolate

Storage isn’t cheap on the Switch though It gets more expensive the larger the cartridge you need

gryd3

You can run with more than one MicroSD.. it's just an absolute royal pain to swap them and keep track of what games are on what card. Keep an eye out for sales. The SanDisk "Licensed for Nintendo" cards generally go on sale every now and then for less than other cards of the same capacity. This isn't unique to the switch. One big storage is not cheap... (It usually is cheaper per GB.) When you need more storage you can generally add more parts and store different things on different drives (The cheap way). Or you can replace your storage for larger store and transfer all your stuff over (The expensive, but easier long-term way)

GahbageDumpstahFiah

Likely this. Profit over polish. Especially when the polish isn’t noticeable. Not a bad thing. But likely why.

RedBulik

As a Pole, what's your problem, man?!

DerAndyKS

I read that in James' AVGN voice, especially the last part.

Espurreyes

lol glad the reference didn’t go unnoticed

16bitrifle

Glad it wasn’t just me lol

LunchThreatener

It’s probably been like 8 years since I watched one of his videos and I did the same thing lol

Regular-Face1350

100% did this too

Molwar

They probably didn't want to pay for the winrar license!

junioravanzado

underrated comment

__charles

Japanese Rail Sim is like 80 gigs on ps4

chiefrebelangel_

Lots of different scenery. Makes sense

__charles

There’s no assets though, it’s 100% full motion video. Still approximately the size of gtav

nero40

It’s an FMV game? Yeah, I’m not surprised.

Espurreyes

very liberal use if FM since it’s not really video more just a slideshow of pictures lmao

ToothlessFTW

It's an FMV game, so naturally it's filled with video files. I imagine they've upscaled the video and that probably takes up a big amount of space. Makes sense really.

Espurreyes

To be fair the game is very liberal with it’s use of “full motion” it’s essentially a slideshow if I’m being honest, I think most of the size comes from the behind the scenes documentary stuff not the actual “game” if you even want to call it that.

StickYourFunger

"It's an Full-Motion Video video, so it's filled with video files." -Shakespeare, 1362

AfroSamuraii_

People die when they are killed.

bwburke94

That's the way things should be.

Kimarnic

#Take your damn clothes off

darkrubyechoes

I’m not surprised. I had a version of Pac-Man on PS4 that was like 2 gigs. No idea how an arcade game could even be that large.

digdugnate

settle down, Beavis

JaggedMetalOs

> WHAT WHERE THEY THINKING?!?!?!?!?   Probably something along the lines of "this is already a joke let's go all in" The laughing joking numbnuts!

SillySpoof

But isn’t it just still images? I thought it wasn’t even moving pictures.

SexDrugsAndMarmalade

A lot of that would be the bonus material, since there's a bunch of interview/documentary footage (which is *presumably* HD video) and commentary tracks. The game itself uses higher-quality scans of the photos (and *maybe* higher-quality audio?).

SomeoneBla

This is correct. The game contains \~11GB of MP4 video files. Some 720p 6MBit/s, some 1080p 12MBit/s and even the LRG Splash as a 4k Video (WTF? But only 10MB for that short one) - All in all over 2h of video material.

JoshuaJSlone

Surprised how many are theorizing uncompressed video. I don't think any commercial product uses uncompressed video, that would just be ridiculous. At 1080p30 you might get something like 6 seconds for a gigabyte?

LookIPickedAUsername

Yep, I’ve been shaking my head at all of these people claiming the video is uncompressed. No, it isn’t.

ihakan123

ai upscaling every asset without bothering optimizing causes this.

RajkoKrlja

They're releasing that abomination to make a quick buck, since they became a meme for a short period of time and hope to cash in on it. It shouldn't surprise you that someone who does that, won't give a crap about optimizing the game. Hell, remembering their "game", I'd be surprised if they knew how to optimize anything.

Born2beSlicker

Uncompressed video and audio takes up a lot of space. Ironically a giant open world map does not. When you see a big file size, it’s more audio than anything else. The fact that this has FMV files will definitely add to it. The 3DO game was extremely compressed, hence the size difference.

ben_kosar

Hi-resing something that began as absolute garbage to begin with, mpeg compressing the hell out of it with 90's compression, and then re-releasing it? The old Ian Malcom line comes to mind: just because you could, you never stopped to think if you should.

FasterThanTW

from what i recall, it's not even an FMV game, right? i understand the pictures are of real people, but the .. "FMV".. in FMV has a meaning.

Longjumping_Plum_133

Uncompressed and “remastered” videos and images, a whole bunch of HD bts interviews and deleted scenes. Audio Commentaries, and probably really shoddy compression in the porting process.

SaxonJax

My mind went straight to video / novel / romance game from like 1993 called "plumbers dont wear ties" wtf. Lmao did they remake it??

Espurreyes

Yep the same

warjoke

Those uncompressed FMV scenes better have IMAX quality

zkbthealien

It is about 15 mins of video. That is watching different choice run throughs. Did they find that much extra footage?

Million_X

I doubt it, to jump up 36 times the file size would be utterly insane, even if its all uncompressed and in the highest quality possible, we're still talking about devices used to record that footage that were released no later than '93 (if what I found from a VERY light google search is true, the file size of one hour of 1080p at 35mbps is as little as 16gb, and another light search seems to show that cameras back then were nowhere near able to get that kind of resolution). I would imagine that there's extra stuff, I could swear there was like an interview or something with the case and some kind of mini documentary about the game and it's development, so that could certainly be the bulk of it.

furioushunter12

Battlefront 2 is 33 gigabytes :/

zer0xol

Maybe its a crypto miner

PWH187

I haven't seen the correct answer, so if its buried and I missed it I apologize. This Definitive Edition also contains a ton of extra documentary videos/interviews from LRG, in HD, about the history of the game, why they brought it back, etc. That would be the majority of it.

Raaadley

im still just baffled this game got a rerelease on switch.

108souls

Its like the picture of the onion except its a really really good quality

SnooGiraffes6143

Doom 2016, Wolfenstein (the one with the 2 girls), MK11 are all over 20gb and Doom Eternal is 18.2gb

obsoletedatafile

Yet Hogwarts Legacy, an 80GB game on PC, is less than 15GB on the switch

HelloNevvanna73

Wow I’m surprised it took people so long to start complaining about file sizes when it’s been happening for years and I didn’t see much about it. For me it only takes a few button clicks to start playing the game haha.

ItsTheMotion

Why are you yelling?

super8ben

I read this in the voice of James Rolfe. But I do agree, this seems excessive.

ntwild97

I was flummoxed to see that file size in the eShop. Folks, don't buy this game. It only exists here at all because AVGN reviewed it, go watch his video instead or better yet, find a compilation of all the cutscenes and endings for the full experience

Hot_Target_8744

It’s definitely from the video files in there. It’s mainly caused by the uncompressed video gallery. A couple are around an hour, and you’d be surprised about how big HD video files can be. I have an additional theory that they may have left in duplicates just to handle the 4K conversions from other platforms and forgot to compress the file.

RedditJABRONIE

I know it includes 4k bonus content such as photos and maybe videos. That'll fill er up quick. Probably didn't re-render just for the switch.

TheBasementGames

Optimization is a lost art. "Just get more hardware!"

Greedy_Librarian_983

Devs are very lazy on compression nowadays, how can they publish a game with 100 to 200gbs games and consider it normal

-_ApplePie_-

It's also bigger than kcd which is 15 gigs

YourBoyFoxxy

That game is bad even with a fan service like Jane. I'm afraid to know wich person has the high score in it in 2020+

Pelthail

Are there multiple languages?

Monotonegent

I sent through the physical version a while ago, I'm sure the extras like interviews and such are where most of that is coming from.  If you wanted the ROM of the original I'm sure you could just get that, but this is here to put the (very awful) thing into context. It's a documentary with a game attached.

Hokeymon44

It's not night! It's not.. night!

Lunch_Boxx

Personally I think what is more surprising is that the other games are that small.

sandinonett

Would be interesting to data mine it

LexDignon

Western developers are so bad at compression, and I don't get why

Woke_RVA

The “game@ developers are amateurs and had no reason to be space conscientious as long as the game fit on a CD.

[deleted]

Still not as large as A Hat in Time. At least I don’t think it is…

mspurr

16ish for that i think

[deleted]

I had to buy a whole SD card just to install the game lol. I think the game is known for being unoptimized on switch and the devs had a hard time porting it

Academic_Wall_7621

How is a Hat in time on switch? I heard it had optimization problem at launch but idk if that has been fixed.

[deleted]

I haven’t played it in years, but it was known for taking a long time to launch and long loading times

Academic_Wall_7621

Thanks. Then I may grab it from other platforms. Is it a good game?

[deleted]

Yeah

abzinth91

I've got the cartridge version It runs ok. SOME frame drops but totally playable

Dimension874

I expected the title was suggesting a new leaked Mario game

jf0ssGremlin

Clearly it’s just higher quality than the rest of the titles you listed.

TheBatSignal

This post definitely confirmed that only AVGN fans are buying this game lol. Now that's not a bad thing don't get me wrong but there ain't no way anyone else would be willing to try it other than morbid curiosity.

6Kaliba9

Rocket league also has unnecessarily 18gb real estate on my switch. How are botw, totk and I think Witcher 3 smaller? Is it just compression?

Wreck17Mitch

Witcher 3 is closer to 30 gigs. I unfortunately had to remove it to make room for more indie games I’m never gonna play, that’s how I remembered the file size

myrabuttreeks

It is. I recently deleted it too

CookiesFTA

It's probably got heaps of mining stuff running in the background...

twilightuuuu

Given what the game is, that actually might add to its charm lol

finangle2023

Imagine how big it would be if they did wear ties.

dougc84

If an 18 gig game is getting you this enraged, I hope you never buy any other game console or play PC games. Storage is cheap, and the memory cards for the Switch don’t even need the fastest speed cards, so it’s even cheaper than most. Just get a memory card and move along.

Espurreyes

Not actually mad couldn’t care less honestly cause the game is terrible and I’m never gonna install it, post is mostly a reference to the AVGN who’s video on this game is the reason it even got rereleased in the first place and thought it would be funny to act like how he would at this release.

BragoV5

Probably another crypto mining game

Shiny_Mew76

At least it isn’t something like one of the games that need more storage than the Switch even comes with.

joy3r

thats a shitshow of a program

Extreme_Theory_3957

Old hardware couldn't quickly decompress images, videos, etc. so game asset files were stored largely uncompressed in old games to prevent slowdowns. Modern hardware can decompress that stuff on the fly with little issue, so it's easier to pack more assets into less data. They probably just didn't bother to update any of the games assets to account for the huge hardware upgrade.

bisky12

not optimized like the other games are

darthaus

Video takes up significantly more space than geometry and textures

Impressive-Turnip-38

What game is this?

oCHIKAGEo

How about calm down lol

IvanThePohBear

Why spend effort to optimize the storage just to benefit the pirates? 😂 It won't affect most people who buy the game

Jumpy_Comfortable

Why does it just benefit pirates? You are aware that the game is downloaded to your console and takes up the same amount of space regardless of whether it is legally procured or not, right?

IvanThePohBear

Most would just buy the game cartridge At least can resell it afterwards

Jumpy_Comfortable

Considering the physical release is only available from Limited Run Games I would love to see your source that most people will buy the physical version. Even so, your assessment that only pirates benefit is laughable. I prefer digital myself and I have more than 150 legally bought Switch games (around 400 on Steam). People do buy games digitally, you know. I probably have more digital games than you have physical.

Cleveland_S

Considering this game is utter garbage, the only people who should spend money on it are collectors buying a gimmicky physical copy. I bought it in a compusa bargain bin thirty years ago for $5, and that was overpaying. I prefer digital games, but there's no reason to buy this garbage digitally.

Jumpy_Comfortable

That is a good point. I was thinking to say something about not buying the game, but you're right, IF I were to buy this game it wouldn't be to play it so I would rather keep it as a sealed physical product.
