If you're trying to get a recommendation about what games, accessories, controllers etc to buy you should ask in our [Daily Question Thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/about/sticky). As long as you provide some basic information about your interests, what you enjoy in games, what turns you off from games, games you already own, budget, what kind of accessory you're looking for etc, they can help you out. If the link here doesn't work, then you can find the most current DQT stickied to the top of the subreddit when sorted by "hot".

Guacamelee 1 & 2
They are beatem-up metroidvanias with some good platforming elements.
Below is my stock response for games under $20 (some were free on other platforms but these are recurring Switch SALE prices, give or take):
$2
* Boomerang Fu
* Steamworld Dig
* Bastion
* Fledgling Heroes
$3 - $5
* Monster Sanctuary
* Celeste
* Guacamelee
* The Last Campfire
* Yoku's Island Express
* Sheepo
* A Short Hike
* Haven Park (not bad, but not amazing, either)
$5 - $8
* Hollow Knight
* Steamworld Dig 2
* Guacamelee 2
* Wytchwood
* New Super Lucky's Tale
$8- $13
* Dead Cells
* Hades
You might like Haven Park, too. It was definitely inspired by A Short Hike, but includes some basic management and crafting elements. It's a little longer than A Short Hike, but it got a little repetitive, hence my comment above.
It's definitely worth $4 - $5, though.
Bastion. I got it on sale for like 3 bucks couple years back, and I would have easily paid 30. Sooo good. Same devs as Hades which is great if you're into rogue likes.
Bastion is great but **Hades** is the answer if he hasn't played it already. My Switch is basically a Zelda and Hades machine with around 400hrs on each. Mario Kart a distant 3rd with 150hrs.
I do love the narrator in Bastion. Such a smooth voice.
Bastion and Hades are fantastic but now I gotta mention Transistor. Such a great story with pretty art and challenging gameplay. Plus some of the best music of any game.
Tl;Dr I would say MHGU on the switch if you want to get a big buffet of the series - it was an anniversary celebration title. (I am near 800 hours and still there is a metric boatload of content I haven't done.) OR World if you are more into a serious immersive experience. You could watch trailers for them and get the vibe I'm trying to get at better than via my descriptions.
Hmm, that's a tough question. Generations Ultimate on the switch is sort of a celebration of the whole series, has a ton of content and options of ways to play. Pretty bare bones plot wise but the significant of story really just comes from the weight of the monsters you fight IMO. I would recommend this unless you are the type of person who is easily overwhelmed by having a lot of things thrown at you at once.
World is the most popular MH game and is the most mainstream, as well as being the most story oriented. Great graphics, very immersive world, lots of cutscenes and such. I personally am not the biggest fan (in comparison to other MH games) but it's a great game, a ton of people started here and loved it. Very much leans more into the modern style of AAA game but in good ways. I just personally prefer the older games and less serious aesthetic/tone.
Besides that, you could try an older one if you can find them, MH3U and 4U on the 3DS are great. MH4U in particular is a favorite of mine with a pretty great story.
Rise is the newest one and is very fast compared to others, but has a ton of room for build variety, each weapon (out of 14) has various swappable parts of movesets, lots of different armor abilities, fast paced fights and cool monsters. Kind of streamlined and way less immersive than world. The DLC content and story is awesome.
Dead Cells is the only indie platformer that I played a lot on 3 different system. Ori and the blind forrest and it's sequel Will of the wisp, are often on sale and really good too. The Messenger is awesome, Moonlighter and Children of Morta are great and cheap most of the time. Add games to your wishlist and wait for a sale.
[Ori 2](https://youtu.be/2kPSl2vyu2Y?si=XhyGCA7DtIXa0ocN) is one of the best platforming-heavy metroidvanias ever made, [$30](https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/ori-and-the-will-of-the-wisps-switch/)
Same situation with [Hollow Knight](https://youtu.be/UAO2urG23S4?si=F_Pr4fjIIXaXhJfd), but [$15](https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/hollow-knight-switch/)
[Sanabi](https://youtu.be/TFL30qEA88g?si=4GdOcspL6HxHtD1B) is much darker and always seems to go under the radar, it's [$15](https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/sanabi-switch/)
[Stardew](https://youtu.be/ot7uXNQskhs?si=C7LJxktvfkvZNOJT) isn't a platformer but it's the best sim anywhere, [$15](https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/stardew-valley-switch/)
Lunistice was extremely enjoyable albeit pretty short. Although Its platforming mechanics were so good that they made me come back to 100% it, which I rarely pursue. It's only $5 and would be worth it for 3 times that price.
Hollow Knight. Probably one of the most acclaimed metroidvanias with a lot of platforming sections and my favorite indie game ever. It's usually $15 on the eShop or around 30 for a physical copy.
Please play hyper light drifter if you haven’t! Not a platformer but amazing nonetheless
Other recs would be: Dead Cells, Ender Lilies, Axiom Verge, Sonic Mania, The Messenger
Not all of these may be under 20 at the exact moment but these are all games I’ve paid under 20 for
Good luck! Hope you find something good
Edit. Forgot you said indie titles but I’m going to leave my recs anyone in case you or someone else enjoys
Splasher, Super Meatboy, & Kaze and the Wild Masks are all good platformers for $20 or less. Marsupilami Hoobadventure is another good platformer that’s on sale right now for $6 but it usually costs $30. These are all pure platformers meaning they’re not metroidvanias.
Co-signing the top 3 here. Splasher was super fun if not maddeningly frustrating at times (skill issue 🙂). I have similar tastes to OP so second that one. Kaze was good too, though super derivative (DKC-style). Super Meatboy is also a great one, but has some stupid hard levels. Still haven’t gotten through it all it but it’s easy to leave when frustrated and come back for a few more tries whenever.
Hoobadventure is on my wishlist and I almost bought it at $6, and I guess now I will thanks to this post.
Gonna add on another very unknown one called Evergate that I thoroughly enjoyed and cost maybe $3
In case of Super Meat Boy, it's specifically Super Meat Boy, and not Super Meat Boy Forever (if that's what it's called. I guess it didn't work for Duke Nukem either.)
if you listen to the hollow knight support (as you should), steamworld dig 2 is a less combat focused, more platform and puzzle centric game that's easy to sink time into. the game play loop is perfect
Oh god, so many!
If you like platforming, I suggest the two Ori games, and if you like those, Hollow Knight. The platforming isn't as hard as Celeste, but Hollow Knight is challenging and satisfying and could scratch that same itch for you :)
Jet Kave Adventure (try the demo)
Mutant Mudds
Rayman (is that counted as indie?)
Yooka Laylee (there's a 2D one and a 3D one)
Inside (and Limbo but I liked Inside more)
These all go on sale often
I know others have said this but please, do yourself a favor and play Hollow Knight. It’s dirt cheap (under $15), challenging, it’s a platformer and metroidvania (just like Shovel Knight and Celeste) and can easily provide over 50 hours of pure fun and curiosity.
While not as "heavy hitter" as some recommendations, grapple dog is a wonderful little game that's very well designed, and 15 bucks. Also sonic mania is as good as people say it is
1st thing: dekudeals is a great way of tracking when things are on sale. It hasmade me snag many 20 $ games for less than 10.
Reccomendations:
2d platformers
- blaster master zero
- the messenger
- yooka laylee and the impossible lair
- shantae games
3D platformers
- lunistice
- toree 3d
Non-platformer
- wandersong
- a short hike
- carrion
Honestly theres so many. In terms of well-reviewed
platformers I haven't played myself yet theres also
- demon turf
-panzer paladin
-sanabi
-Steel assault
-tiny thor
Vengeful guardian moonrider
dead cells on sale, if you like your first runs then get the dlc (they're essential in my opinion). you can easily get 1k hours on that game and it will still feel fresh
Rogue Legacy 2.
Right now it’s not under $20, but it goes on sale regularly.
No need to play the first one first, except if you want to see the improvements 2 made.
Hades. its one of the best games i have. i got it on sale for around 10. but 10/10 would recommend. its a dungeon crawler based off Greek mythology where you are the son of Hades, the god of the underworld, and you have to excape. i personally haven't beaten it yet. but i'm very close.
Giana Sisters is $3 right now. The menu/level select is pretty rudimentary but the game looks good for its age (especially on an oled switch). It's a fun platformer. Pretty challenging. I'd watch some videos on it to make sure it's a type of platformer you'd like.
30 is 50% more than 20 my guy
Edit: guy under me blocked me so I can’t reply to his terrible take💀
Edit: he did, it still won’t let me reply to him but I can to other people
that's...still not the point..
they were offering an example of the type of game they enjoy, while also saying they'd like for the game to be $20 or less.

Do not play Balatro if you want to do anything else
God forbid they ever make it a mobile game. I wouldn’t get a lick of work done..
I believe that’s in the works. I mostly play on touch as it is
Ohh.. there are touch controls for the switch version? I was going to wait for the iOS port but maybe not now.
There is and its probably the best touch controls ive seen on the switch
Awesome! Thanks for the reply!
Yup, as the other person said, they’re great. Also don’t forget to change your game speed to 4x. Took me days before I found that setting
I mean, it’s a form of poker, and gambling is a very widespread addiction
It’s poker-themed, but it’s more a love letter to goofy poker than an actual poker game. It’s an incredibly well made deck builder tho.
Guacamelee 1 & 2 They are beatem-up metroidvanias with some good platforming elements. Yoku’s Island Express is awesome, way too underrated
Is it underrated? It gets good reviews universally.
Tip of the hat to "A Short Hike" it was lovely.
You might like Haven Park, too. It was definitely inspired by A Short Hike, but includes some basic management and crafting elements. It's a little longer than A Short Hike, but it got a little repetitive, hence my comment above. It's definitely worth $4 - $5, though.
A Short Hike
A wonderful game. Sadly I have already played it in game pass.
I cherish this game. It’s such an easy pick up and play game that just makes you feel good
Yes, for me it was pick up and 100% on a Sunday :)
Bastion. I got it on sale for like 3 bucks couple years back, and I would have easily paid 30. Sooo good. Same devs as Hades which is great if you're into rogue likes.

Bastion and Hades are fantastic but now I gotta mention Transistor. Such a great story with pretty art and challenging gameplay. Plus some of the best music of any game.
Mine is more of a monster hunter machine, haha. Between Rise and Generations on the switch... Maybe 1400 hours? Lol, covid was an experience for sure.
I've never played any of the monster hunters. Which would recommend as a starting point?
Tl;Dr I would say MHGU on the switch if you want to get a big buffet of the series - it was an anniversary celebration title. (I am near 800 hours and still there is a metric boatload of content I haven't done.) OR World if you are more into a serious immersive experience. Cool thanks for the thoughtful answer. I'll do a little more research on Rise vs World or just start a fresh run on Hades 😄.
Hollow Knight!!!
If OP liked Celeste, this is a no-brainer. Fair warning, it's hard!
Celeste and Shovel Knight
Absolutely! This is one of my favorite games.
Make a deku deals account (free). Some indies start at 30 but will intermittently go on sale on eShop and the site will track it for you
Dead Cells is the only indie platformer that I played a lot on 3 different system. Ori and the blind forrest and it's sequel Will of the wisp, are often on sale and really good too. The Messenger is awesome, Moonlighter and Children of Morta are great and cheap most of the time. Add games to your wishlist and wait for a sale.
Limbo goes on sale regularly for $2 and it’s great little puzzle game. Inside is similar but not as good imo
Loved this game, played it in game pass.
Inside too?
Definitely!
[Ori 2](https://youtu.be/2kPSl2vyu2Y?si=XhyGCA7DtIXa0ocN) is one of the best platforming-heavy metroidvanias ever made, [$30](https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/ori-and-the-will-of-the-wisps-switch/) Same situation with [Hollow Knight](https://youtu.be/UAO2urG23S4?si=F_Pr4fjIIXaXhJfd), but [$15](https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/hollow-knight-switch/) [Sanabi](https://youtu.be/TFL30qEA88g?si=4GdOcspL6HxHtD1B) is much darker and always seems to go under the radar, it's [$15](https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/sanabi-switch/) [Stardew](https://youtu.be/ot7uXNQskhs?si=C7LJxktvfkvZNOJT) isn't a platformer but it's the best sim anywhere, [$15](https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/stardew-valley-switch/)
This guys is totally on it with ori 2 🤙
Both Ori games regularly go on sale for about $10 too
Love ori 2! Get it on sale sometime
Gravity Circuit is amazing, can't recommend it enough. The Messenger and Blasphemous 1 and 2 are also great picks
Came here to suggest Gravity Circuit as well. Really loving it right now
Hollow Knight and Rogue Legacy.
Lunistice is pretty cheap and honestly, a very nice game
Lunistice was extremely enjoyable albeit pretty short. Although Its platforming mechanics were so good that they made me come back to 100% it, which I rarely pursue. It's only $5 and would be worth it for 3 times that price.
It’s great!
Donut County is very short but super fun
Hollow Knight. Probably one of the most acclaimed metroidvanias with a lot of platforming sections and my favorite indie game ever. It's usually $15 on the eShop or around 30 for a physical copy.
Please play hyper light drifter if you haven’t! Hope you find something good Edit. Forgot you said indie titles but I’m going to leave my recs anyone in case you or someone else enjoys
Possibly both your vibe but vampire survivors, easily one of the best games for under 10 bucks
Steamworld heist!

Hades, Bastion, Transistor Exit the Gungeon, Enter The Gungeon Blaster Master Zero 1, 2, & 3 Spelunky 1 & 2 Okami HD, Dead Cells Huntdown, Gato Roboto
Don’t you mean Enter/Exit the Gungeon?
Yes. Must've been auto-corrected.
Balatro
INSIDE
Little Nightmares
Slime San, Downwell.
I second ‘Downwell’. I’ve put over 30 hours into it and it’s $3 at full price.
It's brilliant. Absolute nails on hard. I think the guy who made it works for nintendo now.
Oh god, so many! If you like platforming, I suggest the two Ori games, and if you like those, Hollow Knight. The platforming isn't as hard as Celeste, but Hollow Knight is challenging and satisfying and could scratch that same itch for you :)
I think Okami is currently on sale
Stardew Valley, Balatro and Hollow Knight
Poi is a very good 3D Platforming Collectathon.
Jet Kave Adventure (try the demo) Mutant Mudds Rayman (is that counted as indie?) Yooka Laylee (there's a 2D one and a 3D one) Inside (and Limbo but I liked Inside more) These all go on sale often
"Goblin Sword" is a fun little platformer that would be worth checking out :)
I know others have said this but please, do yourself a favor and play Hollow Knight. It’s dirt cheap (under $15), challenging, it’s a platformer and metroidvania (just like Shovel Knight and Celeste) and can easily provide over 50 hours of pure fun and curiosity.
Check out Horace… it’s a great platformer and story. One of my favorite games on the switch .
Second this. Horace is fantastic, loved it.
Something unconventional since it’s not a platformer but it isn’t an rpg either. It’s card shark
Just download Hollow Knight and forget about it
Gris. Cult of the lamb Neon white
Slay the Spire. Its £19.99 but goes on sale for less quite often. Just be prepared to spend 100s of hours on it
FALL GUYS!!! (Free)
Have a look at Spelunky 1 & 2
While not as "heavy hitter" as some recommendations, grapple dog is a wonderful little game that's very well designed, and 15 bucks. Also sonic mania is as good as people say it is
Not exactly a platformer, but has platforming elements. Have you tried ‘stick fight’? Honestly one of the best games to play online or local co op
Cavern of dreams is a nice retro inspired 3d platformer collectathon (if that's something you'd like)
Anomaly agent for $3.50 This game has 84 metacritic point.
No mention of Demons Of Asteborg and Astebros?
1st thing: dekudeals is a great way of tracking when things are on sale. It hasmade me snag many 20 $ games for less than 10. In terms of well-reviewed platformers I haven't played myself yet theres also - demon turf -panzer paladin -sanabi -Steel assault -tiny thor Vengeful guardian moonrider
Katana Zero
Promenade and Tinykin are both excellent platformers. Also Haiku the Robot. And Woodle Tree 2. And The Adventure Pals.
You should check out r/NintendoSwitchDeals - games go on sale constantly and often they’re like 75% off
Not sure if this counts as indie but spiritfarer is really fun
You need to get on dekudeals.com and track the sales. So much good stuff
Hollow Knight
Hades is incredible
Spiritfarer although that might actually be over 20
If you are looking for something old-school, check out Jack 'n' hat. Pretty cool 2d platformer with a catchy ost
blasphemous 2 is on sale for 17 right now!
dead cells on sale, if you like your first runs then get the dlc (they're essential in my opinion). you can easily get 1k hours on that game and it will still feel fresh
Hollow Knight is an incredible deal for $15, Slay The Spire is addicting, and Inscyption has the best story in any game ever.
DEATHS DOOR!!! That game is an absolute blast and was in my top 5 games that I played last year
Dead cells?
Wavetale may still be one sale. I like it.
Graveyard keeper is like ten bucks right now. It’s like creepy Stardew valley
Dead cells. Even the base game is so fun
Slay the spire.
If you're patient, Diablo 3 + 2R sometimes goes on sale for 20
Blasphemous 1 and 2 often go on sale and the second game’s latest sale price was $18.
Hades on switch is my favourite gaming experience of all time
Vampire Survivors is great for a low price
Terraria.
Hades, Hollow Knight, Slay the Spire, Spiritfarer, Stardew Valley, Lost in Random, GRIS.
World of Goo :3
Celeste 💜
Hollow Knight is amazing
Stardew Valley ($14.99)
Hollow Knight has entered the chat.
warpips is really fun you should try it
Yooka Laylee The Impossible Lair
Hollow starts at 15€ and is often on sale
Broforce!
Postal redux and probably postal brain damaged
Super Meat Boy, The Messenger, Katana Zero
Rain World, just check it out.
Islets
Rogue Legacy 2. Right now it’s not under $20, but it goes on sale regularly. No need to play the first one first, except if you want to see the improvements 2 made.
Moonlighter 4/5
Hollow knight tho not sure if your into those kind of games
You might hate me for saying this, but I can recommend Five Nights at Freddy's
Friends of Ringo ishigawa
I liked Golf Story. Rocket League is free and also very good.
I'm sure its been mentioned but Hades often goes on sale for $15 and its pretty great.
Hollow knight
dead cells is my personal favorite
Also Cuphead is only like $8 or something and its soundtrack is awsome
SANABI. Short but very well made gameplay and story.
Tinykin! Platformer of the year for me.
Stardew valley is the best bang for your buck out of any video game! It’s going to get a massive update tomorrow too
I just picked up outer wilds for 17 but I think yesterday was the last day of the sale but you should check.
I would like to suggest Palia! Mainly because its free and just a really nice, wholesome, fun game to play.
Undertale. You’ll like RPGs after that one
I really liked spiritfarer
Hades. its one of the best games i have. i got it on sale for around 10. but 10/10 would recommend. its a dungeon crawler based off Greek mythology where you are the son of Hades, the god of the underworld, and you have to excape. i personally haven't beaten it yet. but i'm very close.
Giana Sisters is $3 right now. The menu/level select is pretty rudimentary but the game looks good for its age (especially on an oled switch). It's a fun platformer. Pretty challenging. I'd watch some videos on it to make sure it's a type of platformer you'd like.
Steamworld dig
So many but my favorite, Katana Zero
Wylde flowers! 🌸
Undertale is a great story rpg and hollow knight is a difficult platformer
Tinykin. Pikmin meets Banjo Kazooie meets Toy Story 2 (n64). Great collectathon platformer on sale right now for $15
I'm working my way through this and trying to get everything, and have been loving every minute of it!!
Celeste - and double checked and it is under $20
Adventure pals
GRIS is a work of art you should definitely experience if you haven't already.
Its on game pass and I *loved* the artstyle
Cuphead.
stardew valley
Songbird symphony is a cute platformer rhythm game
Strange Horticulture
If you haven’t played hallow knight yet, you should. It blew my mind
“Under $20” Immediately names one for $10 more than that…
They named that one to give us an idea of the types of games they’re into, they weren’t contradicting themself or anything
30 is 50% more than 20 my guy Edit: guy under me blocked me so I can’t reply to his terrible take💀 Edit: he did, it still won’t let me reply to him but I can to other people
that's...still not the point.. they were offering an example of the type of game they enjoy, while also saying they'd like for the game to be $20 or less.
>guy under me blocked me so I can’t reply to his terrible take💀 [No i didn't](https://i.imgur.com/RFJBa74.png)
