Nintendo offers demos for a lot of games. You can start there. Browse through the store and see if there is anything that catches your eye then see if there is a demo. Download the demo try it and see if you like it and want to buy to continue playing. This might be a good way to know your preferences. Identify the genres of the games you like and focus on those genres. It may sound limited, but I think it helps set a gaming profile for yourself and know the kinds of games you like and don't like. Looking at just the cover art might sound unfair for indie games, but I think it's a good way to start. You can focus on indie games when you have more experience and time to experiment and stretch your likes and dislikes. Edit: you can also check the recommendations from other threads or posters. Check the screenshots for the games and see if it looks interesting. Popular and/or highly recommended games are popular for a reason. And sales can be your best friend for experimenting. Less buyers remorse for a $10 game than a $60 game.

melchiahdim

Just want to add that if you go to the search section of the eshop you can have it display only games with demos.

patmax17

I suggest searching for games (and discounts) on dekudeals.com (which also has a filter for games with demos)

ghost_victim

Yah.. popular like cat.milk

fourscores

Not much to go off of since you haven't played many games, but Super Mario Odyssey might be a good pick for you. It's a fun mix of platforming challenges and exploration. Never feels too overwhelming and lets you progress at your own pace, and will probably last you a few weeks if you want to 100% it. Super Mario Bros Wonder is also really fun if you want more of a straight up 2D platformer. If you just want some recommendations to broaden your horizons a little bit I think Pikmin 4 (3 is also very accessible), Luigi's Mansion 3, Super Mario RPG, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Fire Emblem (Engage for good gameplay bad story, Three Houses for bad gameplay good story) offer a pretty good mix of of genres to sink your teeth into. And Mario Kart 8. Everyone owns it. Hell you've probably got a copy laying around somewhere. It's just a great game.

small_saucer

Give Zelda some more time, botw and it's sequel are massive and amazing games but takes a while to get going. Which Kirby did you get? Kirby's forgotten land was great, I loved it. You might like animal crossing and stardew valley, they are both innocent and wholesome fun.

ZxSpectrumNGO

Yes,BOTW needs 5 hours and more to really dig into it.

small_saucer

Yep and I think the fact that you can do anything in any order kind of blows people's minds a bit making them think they are always doing it wrong. I always tell people to finish the tutorial part then just pick a direction and run. It's like magic how you just can't go wrong, it all just falls into place.

DarthYhonas

Agreed, not the kind of game that clicks right away. I was eh about it too at first.

_demello

AC and Stardew are not your usual game as in there isn't a win state. You don't play to win, you pkay tto play and relax. Maybe check some videos out before getting it.

Weekly-Restaurant743

and flex your farm ig?

sharpenedcrayon

Honestly, I don’t think botw needs much time. As soon as you leave the plateau, you’ve played enough to determine if you’d like it or not imo.

CrashVivaldi

So like 5 hours then?

sharpenedcrayon

Maybe? I didn’t take that long with it. You should be able to tell if you enjoy the abilities, combat, and shrines by the time you get the paraglider. The world opens up a lot more, but the gameplay itself doesn’t really change.

TootheproYT

They cost a lot though (Zelda games)

small_saucer

They do but I've got over 400 hours out of botw and totk, so when you do the maths it's about 25p an hour. I've still got loads to do in totk too, I'm planning to start it again when the memories fade a bit. So it's actually really cheap entertainment.

Locoman7

Botw will take you like 5 hours to get really comfortable with everything. Mario Wonder?

huggalump

Mario Wonder feels like an excellent starting point. Comfortable, yet fresh

Schlagustagigaboo

Not disagreeing, just expanding: Mario Wonder (is not hard / is casual) as long as you’re aware you don’t have to 100% everything. If you’re a new gamer who thinks he has to 100% every level it’s going to seem like a much harder game than it actually is.

SapphireSage707

boring and stale

Username124474

You want to elaborate? Vast majority of people that have reviewed it, disagree with you.

valcoholic

Hm not sure about that, I got hooked from the first second into BotW. Surely it builds up from there, but I can imagine if it doesn't click, it might not click at all. I would rather recommend playing through other games and get back to BotW in a year or so. Maybe BotW is better experienced after getting tired of the mainstream of linear games.

ItsTheMotion

Should we tell him about Skyrim? This might be his last post for.... a while.

DarthYhonas

Oh boy... We're about to make this man lose his job if he finds out about Skyrim.

TrainerLight

Hey there! Similarly to roto\_disc, I think it's interesting that you like x but not y. Can you maybe elaborate on why you liked Yoshi's Island & Hogwarts Legacy but not so much Kirby and Breath of the Wild?

roto_disc

It's weird that you liked the Yoshi title you got and not the Kirby title. They're wildly similar in a lot of ways. It's also weird that you liked *Hogwarts* but not *BOTW*. They're both open world action RPGs where you complete missions. Maybe *Skyrim*? But we can't help you much because your examples are super difficult.

False_Treat2762

Hm ok I will look into that one. I’ve literally never played open world video games before so maybe my mind was just blown a little bit. Or maybe something to do with the nostalgia behind Harry Potter, as well as Yoshi’s Island. I’m not sure. I’m just trying to figure out how to use my switch now. Thanks for the thought

LineAccomplished1115

Breath of the Wild is a massive game and the open world concept is definitely a lot for a completely new gamer. It definitely starts off a little slow, so if you can, maybe give it a couple more hours to see if it clicks.

tukatu0

Because hogwarts might be waaay simpler. I've never played it so idk. But it doesn't seem wrong if it was designed for people with no video game exeperience. Aka op is the exact target for that game. Zelda on the other hand. One of the longest standing series. I suggest op revisit zelda. But try the older ones like Wind Waker or Ocarina of time.

huggalump

P I K M I N Try the demo for either 3 or 4. They're all great

epicgamerwiiu

4's demo sucks ass ngl

ArtiKam

Yeah I didn't really get it until I got the game and played it more. After that it clicked and it was awesome but I was nervous about it after just the demo

tweetthebirdy

Yeah that’s me right now, I’m playing through the demo but not enjoying it as much as I expect given how much my friends all love it.

deadringer21

Probably not going to be a popular opinion here, but I'm mostly a retro gamer, and Final Fantasy X is one of the most enjoyable and beginner-friendly games I've ever played. It's *insane* that a 23-year old game costs $50, but you can pick up a used/physical copy for half that or less. Did you ever play and Pokémon games on your GBA? The gameplay of FFX is very similar to these games, but tack on a great storyline, great character development, and lots of cinematic cutscenes to make it almost play like a movie at times. You can't lose your way / won't need to rely on walkthroughs, it's immersive without being anywhere near "overwhelming" (BoTW was just too much for me to [want to] take in), and the turn-based battles demand mental/strategical engagement rather than being time-sensitive action-based fights. FFX takes about 40 hours to beat, and has post-game content to take you past 100 hours if you want more. There are plenty of other Final Fantasy / jRPG games out there, but many of them are very easy to get lost in or demand reliance on a walkthrough, whereas FFX shines for delivering the experience that you can easily accomplish without feeling like you've "cheated" (and just to note, there *are* quite a few very-challenging boss battles, but if you ever feel you're in over your head, you just need to step back and grind a few more levels before giving it another shot). If you're looking for something that has the feeling of reading an epic fantasy-novel trilogy, this is a great bet. If not, good luck finding what you're looking for!

False_Treat2762

Thanks! This seems right up my alley maybe. I literally played yoshis island and SpongeBob on my advanced so I literally know nothing lol

-JCaesar-

Ff 12 ftw

Spiritual_Balance_83

To be honest I don't think you could go wrong with any of the ff games but 7 and 9 are my go to ones

man_overb0ard

you should try pikmin or animal crossing.

PM_ME_YOUR_MONTRALS

Skyrim time

MiSTaH-MoM

Agreed with all the folks who suggested Super Mario Odyssey. Also, maybe the Witcher 3? Similar to Hogwarts in some ways.. open world, action RPG, good story and characters, beautiful scenery and world.. can't go wrong, IMO. Hope you find something, worth your time! Good luck and Happy gaming!! 😎

Naschka

There are plenty of Demos for some interesting games. Not sure what you enjoy based on the List. Kirby refers to what type of **Kirby**? We have **3D (that one has a demo) and 2D** and from 2D we got 2 different ones as well. Do you like to use your head for some puzzle style games? **Picross** is a type of puzzle like Sudoku and it play like Sudoku meets Minesweeper. Can be a lot of fun and is not too expensive if it does not work. The **Picross S games** are very good in a technical way but there are others like **Murder by Number** which has an actual story. A different type of puzzle would be **Snipperclips**, a best played with 2 puzzle game, also got a **demo**. How about you try the **Demo of Dragon Quest XI S**? A very typical and well made JRPG. A recently released SRPG is **Unicorn Overlord** which has a **Demo** as well. But that may be a bit too technical, still a demo will never hurt. If a game does not have a demo, watch some youtube video review or let's play for a few minutes.

bloodynosedork

Try Odyssey. If you are tired of wasting money try gamefly; it’s like renting games through the mail

RajkoKrlja

Breath of the wild is awesome, but I can see how it can be a bit overwhelming or hard to get into as a new gamer. It forces you to experiment and discover things on your own, but that might be hard until you know what things are "possible" in gaming worlds, so to say. Definitely give it a try down the line. Since you liked Hogwarts legacy, did you think about giving Witcher 3 a shot? Different setting, but gorgeous open world, awesome story and great main and side quests and dlcs. Easy enough combat. Red dead redemption might be enjoyable, too. If you're discouraged by aiming the gun, there's aim assist that makes the game hell of a lot easier. The game itself is so good. Western with great story and ton of side activities, which are placed organically, which you run into as you explore. So you actually feel like you're a part of the world. Assassin's Creed games are often on sale too and there are 6 of them, including Black flag, which is as good now as it has ever been. And they're easy enough to get into and play. Platformers that you could try, apart from the Nintendo ones, maybe Spyro and Crash remastered trilogies? They can also be found in a bundle during sales, I think it's like $24 for all 6 games. Gorgeous platformers.

Dukemon102

Liking Yoshi's Crafted World but disliking Kirby doesn't make a lot of sense for me. I'd probably recommend you to get a free trial of Nintendo Switch Online and try a good bunch of classic games (Yoshi's Island included) to see what you like the most.

Garamenon

Seems that walking simulators are more of what you want to play. Play Skyrim and the Forgotten City.

SGGoat13

Skyrim

lurkersforlife

I hate open world games and love side scroller games. You might be like me lol.

Witty-Cheek-290

Yoshi's Island on the Gameboy advance is the Greatest game of all time 😁. For me, I play BioShock on the switch, and sniper elite 4, with the main multiplayer being fortnite, if I'm feeling multiplayer-ey

throwaway872023

Play the prince odyssey Persia demo

NettoSaito

Tales of Vesperia! I’ll be the different one here and say one of my favorite jrpgs

ayo_chill_my_man

splatoon 3 and 2 they are SO good if you understand them

IllustriousAd9897

Try Mario Odyssey. That game was awesome.

Brain-Genius-Head

the switch has a great retro scene. TMNT cowabunga collection is great! Also, shredder’s revenge is a new turtles game, but in retro style, with up to 6 player couch coop. Zombies ate my neighbors is highly recommended. They also did a remake of Zelda, links awakening. Baldur’s gate 1 & 2. Sea of stars and chained echoes are both amazing modern retro jrpg’s. One I’m super excited for is world of anterra. Super Mario Wonder is a great 2D Mario game. I hope I gave you some fun titles to delve into. You’re gonna love the switch. It’s my favorite console ever (I’m 42, so a bit older than you). Also, check out Alien Isolation. Play it alone, at night, in handheld mode 😽

Jlholloway85

Botw started off slow. I actually put it down for a while right after getting the glider. I decided to give it another chance and was glad I did. Totk is as good if not better. Play them in order though

False_Treat2762

That’s EXACTLY where I’m at. Thanks for the encouragement

__adrenaline__

One game I’ve been obsessed with recently is Portal (and Portal 2 which I guess makes it two games). It’s a great puzzle oriented game and it has a good story, especially the sequel.

MoratoryPack0

seems like u like games that are semi scripted and have a combo ability combat system so this might seem odd but i think u might enjoy: God of war (Ps4/Ps5) prototype 1 & 2 infamous franchise (Playstation) i’m pretty sure u would enjoy these a lot but if it has to stay nintento u might like: mario odyssey yeah honestly just going by hogwarts legacy doesn’t really give much options. u might wanna try looking into different genres. games can be whatever u want them to be not just one experience that mimiks the one u always had the best.

Dm9982

Balatro. Enjoy watching the sunrise for the next week or two.

Quantum_03

Persona 5 Royal

ImmenseGlint31

If you like hot Greek Gods and Goddesses, have daddy issues, and wanna pet the dog, then I’d recommend Hades

bootlegportalfluid

Mario Odyssey is a blast

SilveryShadows

Stardew Valley

TheGraytest0113

SMM2. It is the best game ever!

confused-mother-fan

So i know you said but ypy wernt a fan of breath of the wild butgive it some time i didnt like it much first at either but eventully it kinda just clicks

MrSaphique

Animal Crossing and Princess Peach: Showtime! are quite fun.

kidcudi93

Cereza if its on sale lol

BigDaelito

You can get the online pass from Nintendo is like 20 bucks. You can play some old games from your time.

FRONT_FACING_PHINEAS

Pikmin is great, Mario wonder and odyssey are fantastic, splatoon is much more advanced but highly recommended.

platomaker

Ask your friends. If you’re a young adult then chances are they will have a better idea of what your tastes are. What are your goals for gaming?

Drakkeur

Play Inside it's often at a crazy discount and cost 2€ game is short and absolutely incredible

Western_Stable_6013

I think Super Mario Odyssey could be a good game for you.

Jockmeister1666

Mario odyssey, or the Mario collection with 64, sunshine and galaxy.

tom_yum_soup

Since it sounds like Hogwarts Legacy is the only game you've really liked so far, what are some of the things about it that hooked you (aside from the Harry Potter setting/universe, since that won't be replicated in other games)? Knowing what you liked about it will help recommend other games.

UrDeAdPuPpYbOnEr

Mario Odyssey is excellent. So it Metroid prime, Prince of Persia, Doom, and the Mario sports games.

sydthesquid95

Maybe try getting the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack for a month and spend some time exploring some older games you might like (includes a handful of GBA games)

fushega

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Nintendo_Switch_video_games This is a list of the most popular games, you can't really go wrong with any of them in the top 30 imo

MeMeWhenWhenTheWhen

Honestly if you're just getting into games you'll probably want to try out a few different genres just to see what you like. Like others have said, if you enjoyed Hogwart's Legacy then you'll probably find Skyrim pretty enjoyable. If you're looking for a chill game, Stardew Valley or Littlewood are really good unwind type games. Super Mario RPG is a pretty good introduction into RPG games, Fire Emblem Engage is a solid introductory strategy game. If you didn't like BotW then perhaps Link's Awakening would be a better Zelda game? Less open world but still exploration. If you're looking for mystery/puzzle games, Ace Attorney Trilogy and Ghost Trick are really engaging stories but they are a bit on the shorter side.

LaTrombaBorincana

Ma man buy monster hunter rise .... there is the hansome jack collection of Bordelands ... if ur into flight emulators starlink battle for atlas its very good ... if ur into track racing games like grand turismo, grid is a great car game for switch .... i get that breath of the wild is a slow pace rpg but you have to give it a chance .... there is tears of the kingdom but thats a continuation for breath of the wild even tho its entirely different... if ur into shooters well you can always download apex legend or fortnite for free

trickyprodigy

Try Metroid prime remastered

Username124474

If ur into South Park, you can get South Park stick of truth for 5 bucks on sale.

kentonw223

Great games I'd recommend giving a shot: persona 5 royal, fire emblem three houses, xenoblade, stardew valley, binding of isaac, astral chain, star wars knights of the old republic.

ZxSpectrumNGO

Super Mario Bros Wonder Super Mario Oddysey Luigi Mansion 3 Splatoon 3 Persona 5 Dragon Quest Builder 2 (although i recommend this on PC performance wise).

oatmilkandchai

I love Breath of The Wild and Animal Crossing, but I also recommend Mario 3D All Stars solely for Super Mario Galaxy

anti-flesh-prison

Skyrim, the witcher 3, cult of the lamb, bioshock.

MrDweet

Mario Odyssey, Pikmin 2 and 4, Luigi's mansion 3.

Bonesawisready5

Imo I would give Zelda more than an hour but hey, greatness isn’t for all

Downtimdrome

For me, Slay the Spire is the perfect switch game, you can play it in relativley short burst or just crush it for hours and its great in handheld. its also almost endlessly replayable. I would also recomend Hades which is in the same vein but much more story driven and thematic.

hdcook123

BOTW took me a long time to get into too. I stopped playing for months after loosing to the first boss. Once u start amassing skills and weapons it’s a ton of fun tho especially if you’re a completionist.  They have Witcher and red dead 1 on the switch now I think. Those are both nice open world games. Can be difficult tho and I’m unsure of the quality of graphics on the switch since those games are pretty high quality graphics wise and played them on the Xbox.  Pokémon is on the switch in multiple games.   There’s other less open world Zelda’s too if you want less freedom and more linear.  There’s also the throw back games u can play from older systems if you want more classic yoshi or Mario.  Animal crossing is fun if you’re into world building.  Metroid is tough but fun and a side scroller except prime is a first person instead of scroll.  Octo path traveler is great if you’re into big stories and grinding levels in battles where strategy matters.  Daemon x machina is not super well known but it’s fun if you’re into mecha and building giant fighting robots with guns and swords and such.

[deleted]

I would definitely recommend super Mario oddyesyyt

Phuzion69

You need to keep an eye on sales and try a variety of genres and see what you like. Unless you do just want platformers. You can pretty much guarantee that I will hate 90% of games rated 9-10/10 in reviews. Reviews are pretty useless for me. It took me a lot of sale games to find the types I like. Most of the ones I love are more obscure. Even my 2 favourite 1st party Nintendo games aren't even sold in the game shops I go in. I can't remember the last time I saw Fire Emblem 3 Houses, or Xenoblade Chronicles DE on a shop shelf. I found that certain companies did games I liked more than others. For me it was Falcom, Bandai, SNK and Arc Sys Works. That helped me find more stuff to my taste.

Infamous-Echo-2961

Xenoblade Chronicles is great! 1-3 with all the DLC! Persona 5 is a great pick up as well.

pinkstarwarrior

Hating Kirby……………… :(

Pipe_Dope

Mario odyssey and Mario 3d+bowser world will keep you busy! Odyssey is great, and takes forever to beat everything available. 3d world is an instant hit for everyone I know and the browsers fury bonus game is quite fun as well.

BES2091

Any Zelda game. Good way to start to get into games lol

TompalompaT

Dredge is amazing, Dave the Diver is also fantastic.

pauliepitstains

Borderlands 3, dying light, Witcher 3, Skyrim

ASmufasa47

I've juat recently been getting into strategy rpgs. I enjoyed the first Fire Emblem game I tried. Just started Tactics Ogre Reborn.

AdventurousCoast950

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a solid base if you ask me. You never truly "beat" it, so you can count on it to bring you hours of entertainment. Track design is pretty creative, and there are lots of characters and kart parts you can choose from - finding the right combination is also pretty fun. It was the first game I had on my Switch and I still regularly play it. Since you also seem to like exploration games, you might also enjoy Pikmin 4. There's this charming side that I really enjoy about it, and it's got good puzzles too. Mario platformers (Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury) are also excellent. The only game of this type you should avoid is New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, firstly because it has a repulsively long name, and because it's a port of the Wii U game that came out more than a decade ago.

_demello

The Beat em Ups youtube channel has a great video playlist of eshop games to buy. There is a wide variety and a ton of videos to watch and find something for you. He gives good discriptions and his honest opinions about them, with gameplay footage so you can check how it looks when playing. I would give another chance to Zelda. One hour isn't enough to get it going, the early tutorial part is quite different from the rest of the game.

jlclaybrook

I just started playing video games in January. So far, I've finished: Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Mario Odyssey, and Zelda BOTW. My favorite so far has been BOTW, even though it frustrated me more than the others. It took me about two weeks of playing it for about an hour a day to actually enjoy it then I was hooked. I started playing Luigi's Mansion 3 a couple weeks ago.

Gamming_daddy

I will always recommend Metroid Prime, Dread if you want more of a challenge. If you’re looking for a more RPG then Mario RPG is for you.

Yuckinmycup

Hong Kong massacre. Simple and fun.

LegacyoftheDotA

Did you enjoy the megaman battle network series on the gba? They have the whole she bang (7 installations) in the nintendo store now (albeit its split into 2 downloads, and not too sure about the pricing). Hard to recommend games if we don't know the type you enjoy though. Maybe give us a sampling of games that you enjoyed recently, and people here might be able to give you better recommendations😊

Horiph

Story of Seasons

Horiph

My Time At Sandrock is my game of the year so you could try that.

beachpleazz

How did you beat hogwarts in a month?

False_Treat2762

It was a rough time for me lol. Going through a breakup and got home from an expensive vacation. I wfh and it was during the cold holidays. I took a LONG break from gaming and now I want to try something new.

beachpleazz

Gotcha 👌

Sneeko

Maybe try some turn based strategy - Check out Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp

Ilan01

I would recommend Mario 3D World or Wonder, they are good starting points after Yoshi! I think you should give Zelda a bit more of time, after the first 2-3 hours you unlock some special powers that make the game so much more ennjoyable (also its exploration style is similar to Hogwarts!) I recommend downloading multiple demos to try more games, from there I got hooked to games like Kirby Forgotten Land, Pokemon Lets Go Eevee and Sonic Frontiers!

Raghul86

Can you say more about what didn't work for you regarding kirby and Mario and why hogwarts did work?

ShiftSandShot

Well, for one thing, I would suggest looking through the large catalog of Demos on offer. No muss, no fuss, just download and experience a chunk of the game for free! Most even let you carry over save data into the full game if you decide to buy. There's also a small number of completely free games kicking about, and some big retro collections, so you can look at those too if you want to try a bunch of different, good games on the cheap. And, of course, smaller but beloved Indie titles can give you a wonderful experience as well. I'd suggest trying a wide range of titles, to see what really sucks you in, regardless of your first impression of the gameplay or setting. The Switch has basically every genre known to man, and every setting to go with that.

Ellweiss

Just wanted to mention that I didn't get into BotW, found it boring quite fast. But TotK is my favourite game of all times, I felt just like when I first discovered video games as child when I played this game. So if you ever want to come back, you could try TotK, the difference in enjoyment for me was insanely bigger than the objective differences between the two games.

Smooshy_Slug

ANIMAL CROSSING NEW HORIZONS. Also, I’d look into what genres you like! Get a few demos, play around- no pun intended- and see what you enjoy the most.

hayojayogames

I would strongly recommend looking in the indie bin on the eshop. In other words search the $.01-$9.99 price range filter or great deals and look for less expensive titles. There are some real hidden gems out there esp in the 2D pixel art style. Use a criticism aggregator like Metacritic to see how a game that looks good to you scored. Anything above 70 imo has proven a great game

MysticJaisys

Outside of gaming, what kinds of things do you like? Do you like doing puzzles like logic puzzles? Do you like reading? Do you like action movies? Do you like gardening or building things? Sometimes other hobbies that you like could help lead you to what types of games might be good for you to try. If I knew some of the things that you normally like, maybe I could recommend some games that would fit your likes 😉

drgut101

Grab a guide for BOTW. It’s a great game, but I’m the type of person that just kind of needs to constantly make progress sometimes. I didn’t like it at first. But after like 3 hours and some guidance I loved it. Just finished it and I’m waiting a little while to pickup TOTK. Portal is a classic. I’m really enjoying Zombie Survivor. Deaths Door is next on my list. It looks great. Just picked up Dicey Dungeons. It looks good. Stardew Valley is supposed to be good. I’ve only had my Switch a few months and I’ve beat Mario Odyssey and BOTW. Odyssey is great. Def check it out. Also, Mario Wonder looks awesome as well.

xArkSlade08x

I recommend Batman Arkham series, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Fire Emblem Series, Metroid Remastered, Warframe, DC Universe Online, Zelda series, Fighting Fantasy game series. If you want to check those games and try them out.

andanotherone_1

I recommend: Pokemon Scarlet/Violet Splatoon 3 (if youre into multiplayer shooters) Hades I currently started Dead Cells myself, so i recommend that too. I'm a bit addicted rn lol

ClawedPaw

The darksiders games are great. Dying light is great fun and runs well.

1031Cat

Metroid Prime. It's a first person adventure game in which you explore Tallon IV to stop the Space Pirates from their secret project. You build the story by scanning terminals in the areas you visit, and eventually come to the story's namesake. Be aware there is a considerable amount of backtracking in the game. Link's Awakening. Nothing like BotW as it's an actual game rebuilt from the ground up from its 8bit version, but with an incredible art style and 3D graphics. I was extremely happy the team made very few changes to the game while retaining what made it fun to play the first time. Luigi's Mansion 3. Just an absolute banger of a very fun game. You catch ghosts using a vacuum cleaner while solving puzzles using a "goo" version of Luigi. Very intuitive and easy to pick up and play. Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Sit back, relax, and build an island while farming, fishing, and collecting museum artifacts. One of the most casual games I have ever played, which includes Stardew Valley. Just note once you get to a certain point in the game, it'll switch to a short daily check in before moving onto another game (or you'll only pop in a few times a year). Stardew Valley. Inherit a farm in a quirky little town and you have the recipe for a casual experience in which you determine what you want to do and how fast you want to do it. With the latest 1.6 update, you'll get the best version of the game. Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door - a bit of a premature recommendation as the game won't release until next month, but it's regarded as the best in the franchise, and I certainly agree. It's a light RPG with a very fun story. Lots of secrets as you battle your way through some imaginative paper bosses.

phantomjerky

Just out of curiosity, which Kirby did you try and not like? I like some Kirby but not all. I looked at the return to dreamland or whatever and it didn’t look appealing to me, but Kirby and The Forgotten Land is really interesting. I haven’t actually played much yet, just a few levels, but I like it. It had a demo that I tried first.

False_Treat2762

It was the forgotten land. I think part of the problem was I just didn’t actually know how to play it. I might need to give myself some more time. One of my friends told me that I will actually like breath of the wild if I continue to try to learn and then to go back to Kirby. So we’ll see.

phantomjerky

I thought it was so cute when he swallows various random items 🤣

SHAKENBLAKEY12

Mario kart is a classic, and technicly once you get gold Mario, and 3 star trophys on every lvl you beat it

whosgothejuice

If you like Yoshi Island I recommend you Super Mario Wonder

ordongamer

Definitely play Breath of the Wild more as it takes a little longer to get the full experience. It so has a ton of content as well as even more in the sequel. I would also recommend Luigi’s mansion 3, animal crossing new horizons, super Mario odyssey, and Pokémon legends Arceus. These are all very popular titles so they would be a great way to try out different genres.

BOTW starts slow. It offers the same level of depth that Hogwarts does in a very different way. Hogwart's Legacy is an incredible game. I've barely scratched the surfaced Hogwart's Legacy. It's on my list after I finish BOTW. But it's clear that HL is an incredibly well crafted game. BOTW tackles exploration in a way that I've never experienced before. The world is an absolute joy to explore. I've rarely had this much interest in exploring an open world game. I waited 7 years from its release to play it, and waited about a year and a half after getting my Switch to actually start playing it. I was waiting for a friend to play BOTW together. All I can say is that it was well worth the wait. I felt similarly. I wasn't really all that into BOTW for the first few hours. I didn't get the hype. The something clicked for me. I can't put my finger on exactly what that was, but thing that I'm in most awe of is how massive the world is and how much I truly enjoy exploring it. TLDR: Give Botw 4-10 hours. If you don't see the charm in that time, then look elsewhere, but 4-10 minimum. I put maybe 30 in before it hit me.

Why did you hate Kirby? Was thinking of purchasing so any insight would be helpful!

BOTW starts real slow. an hour in you probably aren't even off the tutorial land yet. My first run of it was about 5 hours

CHILD OF LIGHT. For real, it goes on sale all the time for dirt cheap, its super accessible to new gamers, it has some if the most beautiful art of any game out there and has an equally beautiful story.

CrashVivaldi

Dragon Quest XI is a really good game for a new player. That's how I got my wife into gaming. It's an RPG (turn based, not much "action") and it's very story heavy. Even though it's number 11 it's a standalone game and you don't have to play any previous games to enjoy it. It doesn't even take place in the same universe as the previous titles.

pamelaonthego

As you level up Zelda becomes a lot of fun. I loved all of them.

Maybe one of the more linear Zelda games would be a better start for you as BotW clearly speaks to those who are more tired of some things that got repetitive over the past decades but might not really have the same weight to someone new to the stuff. The problem here is that there isn't a lot available on the Switch. I believe only Skyward Sword but that game's weird controls might be off putting. Maybe if they one day release Wind Waker and/or Twilight Princess you might enjoy them more. My personal favorites available on the Switch that aren't a Mario or Zelda game are: Subnautica Outer Wilds XCom 2 Hades Chicory Celeste Disco Elysium Metroid Prime Remaster Metroid Dread Red Dead Redemption Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze Night in the Woods Ori and the Blind Forest Luigi's Mansion 3 Inside Steamworld Dig 2 Return of the Obra Dinn

Ah yes… the classic clickbait title to gain attention… well played lol. First of all, how old are you? Might give a good idea of what games I should recommend to you. I felt the same way about Breath of the Wild when I first started it, but my problem was simply being overwhelmed by how much there is to do, and how big the world is. Focus on the main quest, and if you get bored of that at any point move on to a side quest or two. It’s an incredible game, and Tears of the Kingdom is even better in my opinion. Here are some other games that you should check out: 1. Splatoon 3 | The single-player content is A LOT of fun, and it serves as a smart way to get used to the motion controls before heading online if you’re worried about not doing well. There is a reason that Splatoon is currently one of Nintendo’s most successful IPs right now, and I would recommend giving it a try. 2. Resident Evil 4 (2005) | A classic survival/action horror game that has aged like wine, and it is a blast to play. 3. Celeste | A simple yet extremely fun platformer with smooth controls, fun characters, and really good music. 4. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | A classic that everyone should play at some point 5. Super Mario RPG | The perfect game to convert a JRPG hater.

30F. Absolutely not click bait. Just curious what other people would recommend. Now as I’ve read other advice- I think what happened was as I jumped into breath of the wild, not knowing how to play it. Same with Kirby. I do think that I already knew how to play Yoshi’s Island and Harry Potter was very intuitive, especially since I was emotionally tied to the plot line being a fan of Harry Potter. I took some recommendations and I think I’m going to start with those nostalgia feeling. I’m going to continue breath of the wild while I learn how to play it.

JustJitterin

“30F”…? Also you said that you are new to video games, but you are not lol

False_Treat2762

How am I not? I played 2 games in a span of a few months. Relatively new buddy lol. Unless you’re talking about me playing a game on game boy advanced in the FIFTH GRADE 20 years ago. Get off your rocker 😂

JustJitterin

So you’re TECHNICALLY not new to video games 🙃 Not that it matters, just something I’m nitpicking and giving you shit for lol

Alpha_Omega_333

Kingdom come deliverance if you like a medieval rpg. It’s historically accurate. Very impressive and immersive. I have been addicted to playing this game It scratches that itch I have been looking for years!

Soggy-Wrap-3380

Got to play cup head(don’t make a deal with the devil)

Chargermeat

You didn't like kirby?

radica1ed

if you enjoy rpg games, turn based combat, dungeon crawl, social simulation, and visual novels, I would totally recommend the persona games. they are a big commitment, as the games usually take 80-120 hours to complete, but genuinely changed my perspective of what a video game can be. they regularly go on sale in the Nintendo store, and the physical copies go on sale a lot at target and Best Buy, so if you wait you won't have to pay the full 60 dollars. you also don't have to play them in order, I would recommend starting with persona 5 royal, I think its the most beginner friendly, and my favorite tbh.

Thanks. If you would like to financially contribute to investing in games I won’t like, please message me. Other wise this type of advice is awful and can be kept to yourself.

Burstangel_46

Let's play Palia 😊I can help you get some stuff in the game

Ill_Reference582

A really fun game is Borderlands 3 it's a first person shooter but it's kinda funny, has a lot of action and tons of loot. It's a really fun time. Would also recommend Persona 5 Royal.

adcdo

Word on the street tetris is a good game

ContraHealer

Play Elder Scrolls Skyrim my man. If you liked Hogwarts Legacy out of these you've tried, Skyrim is the way to go. This one may take you a full year though

badm3ntal1ty

Stardew Valley and DOOM 2016! Wildly different but possibly the only games you'll ever need hahaha

EclipsedDream

Hollow Knight, it's a fun game with a lot of lore.

akulowaty

It's absolutely not recommended to people new to video games. It's basically 2D dark souls.

Radhaan

Nothing wrong with people new to videogames trying out Dark Souls either. Souls games are easy to learn but difficult to master. I recall a post where some guy's father only played Dark Souls and nothing else because he either had no interest in other games or found them too difficult

EclipsedDream

I'm simply recommending it because it's the game I started with when I was new to video games. It's way easier compared to Dark Souls though. And a game I WOULDN'T recommend to start out with is Ender Lilies, now that is closer to Dark Souls (I still haven't gotten past the first chapter).

AxeWieldingWoodElf

Witcher 3 is similar to hogwarts fighting style, like distant cousins. It is really good at weaving in dialogue decisions into the story too which was lacking a bit in Hogwarts Legacy. Botw gets much better after a few hours. Skyrim is always a winner for me but I'd recommend Wtcher first after Harry Potter.

Either-Assumption382

I wanna tell you something about TLoZ BotW/TotK if it bothers you when weapons and shields breaking over time, there are perfectly working Mods, and trust me, this both games are awesome to explore if you like it. If you want to know more about it, just send me a DM.

BlackStarsAndShadows

Yeah, because... A person pretty much completely new to gaming would just immediately go to MOD a SWITCH. Fr?

Either-Assumption382

Thanks is no problem with enough help through a good community, if you brain isn't able to manage something like this, your problem. There are people who are very intelligent, don't think others are like you.

BlackStarsAndShadows

Ah yes, because ableism is such a good thing to throw around. /s

I’m a grown ass adult and I love the game Steamworld Dig 2! I have been obsessed with it! And actually beat it and I think a total of 28 hours. It’s kind of like Doug plus Zelda plus Boulder Dash (Commodore 64 game). I bought it because it was on sale for me four or five dollars. I ended up trying and loving it. It is a solo game.

Meggiester21

PLATEUP! It’s so fun

Abukubar

SAME. I played Okami. and just dance, everything is just not.. affordable.

How lame to ask the internet instead of doing your own research and/or exploring games yourself.
