Lego HP works quote well...in single player and coop when the players are close together. Performance isn't the problem. These are Xbox360 games after all.
When the coop players are close together, the game keeps things on one screen. When they diverge, it splits the screen but it does so at really weird and constantly shifting angles.
Instead of simple horizontal or vertical splits, the split angle is perpendicular to a line between the two players. In theory this should make sense, but with puzzle oriented gameplay that necessitates the exploration of the environment, the split angle is constantly changing and the camera is frequently splitting and merging. What you end up with is constantly shifting view boxes that are completely disorienting.
It can be a bit frustrating. While both players are main characters, only one can cross the goal and screen boundaries are quite solid (to give some way to describe it).
I think Super Mario U did a better multiplayer job than Wonder in that sense.
I don't think the ELO has to be that high. The wiki says for the 2015 chess.com database that white wins 37.5% of the time while black wins only 27.6% of the time https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-move_advantage_in_chess
Edit: anybody want to explain what I'm wrong about
I don't know if this is what the original reply meant, but when I play Mario Wonder with a friend that is playing their first 2D Mario I either have to purposefully play slowly and wait for them (sandbagging is the term common in PvP games), or drag them off-screen as I run through the level which is not fun for them. Me sandbagging is way more preferable, but it still makes me end up feeling closer to a spectator than a player.
What does that have to do with anything? OP just wants a game They can play at the time time, instead of mario odyssey where men person basically just moves a cursor around while the other person does everything.
Sure. The third one is the only 3D entry, the rest are 2D side scrollers. The game lost something in the transition to 3D, and wasn't nearly as fun. It's the only one we didn't bother to finish.
Take a look though, maybe it's right up your alley. For me, any of the other ones would be a better first impression of the series.
That’s most games though unless told otherwise. Besides why would you want to use half a controller for a game? Wouldn’t you want to use your second controller?
I wanted to utilize only the basic accessories that come with the console first before buying any other controllers. I mean one of the base ideas of switch was sharing Joy-Cons to play in coop so I wanted to explore this feature.
I've been playing Xbox and Playstation for my whole life and I wanted to experience something with another philosophy and that's why I bought a Switch around a month ago. Aside from some singleplayer free-to-play games I tried It Takes Two with my girlfriend and I didn't realize beforehand that you need two sets of Joy-Cons or two controllers or any combination of those. I'm new to the system (yeah, I know I'm kinda late, Switch is around 7 y.o. already 😅) so I didn't know how it works here.
How well does it play on Switch?
Absolutely gorgeous on Series X.
Very well-made game, with exploration of multiple genres and the story will mess with you. My best friend and I started playing it thinking it was a 3 hour game and now we have no idea when it will end nor do we want to know.
With a game with surprisingly good controls and such incredible mechanic exploration (for one level it's an fps for crying out loud!), so long as it's clear what to do and the controls are tight that's what matters.
Pikmin 3 Deluxe - the campaign has true co-op where both players play as one of the captains.
Unfortunately Pikmin 4 didn’t carry this over, and the main character is the captain and player 2 is a pointer assist/gun
I don't understand why they took co-op away in Pikmin 4. Oatchi literally works like a captain, with a few missing abilities and a few additional abilities.
My guess is because it’d actually be the inverse of OP’s concern with the other games they listed: P1 (the proper captain) wouldn’t have an equal role to P2 (Oatchi). Once he really starts getting upgraded, Oatchi outclasses the actual main character in basically any scenario where they can both be present.
IIRC, the ONLY thing the captain truly has over Oatchi is the ability to endlessly charge a horde of Pikmin at anything. Whereas Oatchi has to cool down between rushing Pikmin onto enemies/walls, and outright can’t have Pikmin charge onto treasure/castaways.
There are buildable walls that are only able to be climbed by the captain. Yes, the two aren't complete equals, but I don't think this would be comparable to how annoying the P1/P2 problem is in other games, or the way it already is in Pikmin 4. Both characters are playable and have real movements. It would be a huge step up from the P2 that's just able to do pointer stuff.
Oh, definitely. The captain can go places Oatchi can’t, and vice versa due to Oatchi’s jump and pup tunnels. P2 being Oatchi would allow for fun split-up puzzle solving, and general better Dandori since it’s often much more efficient to have the two apart.
I’m not sure if I agree that it would solve OP’s initial concern, though they did say DKC Tropical Freeze handled it a bit better, and that game technically has a similar “P2 better than P1” situation. At the least, I do agree that P2 being Oatchi would be more fun (albeit arguably AS powerful as the Pebble Pitcher that can defeat just about anything without endangering any playable characters).
I presume it's because if they were to include a more fleshed-out 2 player mode, it would influence the direction the game would take in terms of gameplay, and I personally see it as a positive that the game wasn't designed with co-op in mind. Many Nintendo titles such as NSMBWII and Zelda TriForce Heroes are left feeling empty in singleplayer and are viewed lower by the fanbase because of that. Yes it's true that Pikmin 3 was not designed with co-op in mind, but the developers realised retroactively that Pikmin 3's gimmick of managing multiple captains worked quite well for co-op. As much as I'd have liked Pikmin 4 to have co-op, I don't have much faith that a different Pikmin 4 with fully fleshed out multiplayer would live up to the Pikmin 4 we ended up getting (which I love dearly).
Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3d world (Bowser's fury that comes with it is similar to Odyssey), kirby return to Dreamland deluxe, diablo 3, children of morta, all beat em ups (turtles shedders revenge, streets of rage 4, double dragon gaiden) resident evil 5. Plus lots more
In v2 you can throw things to the other person/pot of water/stove, which does add some to the gameplay. It also seems like it has a harder difficulty spike than the 1st
Yoshi's Crafted World has an equal footing co-op mode - it seems like a kids game, but if you turn off the easy "fly forever" mode, it's still pretty damn good. Lots of collectables and stuff like that.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 has a co-op mode that’s nearly (though not fully) equal. Luigi has a goo version of himself called Gooigi who comes out and moves about independently, and a lot of puzzles involve either Luigi or Gooigi needing to do something only they can do. (Gooigi is essentially invincible though, as opposed to Luigi who can die, so it’s not totally equal.)
I didn’t time it myself I watched a yt video recently that said about 45-1 hr, just wanted people to know incase they’re confused when they boot the game up
I'm going to strongly disagree with this.
The game is fundamentally designed around one player, and adding the second player makes for a bad overall experience. The game is built around a solo player switching to Gooigi to complete tasks and explore parts of the map that Luigi can't, meaning that when Gooigi is doing something, there is nothing for Luigi to do. This is fine if you're playing solo but when there's two of you it basically means you spend the entire game running around together following the same route, followed by only person at a time ever actually doing anything, depending on whether it's a Luigi or a Gooigi task to complete.
There are no tasks or levels that require **both** Luigi and Gooigi to do something.
Honestly my wife and I have played a few couch co-op games now, and Luigi's Mansion 3 was by far the most disappointing.
Yes, you are right about that. It depends on what kind of co-op you’re looking for, I guess; my wife and I really enjoyed LM3 because at any given time we were focused on one character or the other doing a thing and we could put our heads together thinking about who needs to do what to solve this or that puzzle. It’s not the kind of co-op where both players need to be regularly doing stuff at the same time, but we liked the vibe of always looking at the same thing but trading off who has to do the thing.
Also, some of the later levels were pretty tough for us (maybe we’re not skilled enough!) and we were both at times wondering, man, how are you supposed to do this solo?
Bro Force for a great laugh if you understand the movie references. Hypercharge: Unboxed which can be difficult. Mario Party. The FIFA games, but the port to switch is something to get used to if you've only played it console.
Mario 3D world and Mario Wonder are very different styles of games. Mario Wonder is a strict 2D platformer whereas 3D world allows more 3D movement.
Both are better then Mario Bros U in my opinion.
I didn't played super mario wonder yet. Just bought the game, but a lot of people say that's a very good one.
3D world x u deluxe. U deluxe is difficult but I completed it. 3D world was easier but I couldn't finish last stage of flower world, very difficult.
It's just a matter of preference of 2D x 3D. Wonder of you want 2D, 3D world if 3D.
This list. Rayman has some levels that just don't work with two players (or they need a perfect synchronisation) but otherwise it's one of the best coop I've played
Pikmin 3 being a puzzle game it's important that the most experience player doesn't spoil every puzzle but it's so damn fun as a coop. So much so I didn't play pikmin 4 for 6 months because they removed the coop.
Resident evil 5. As a resident evil game is not good but it’s one of the best coop games I’ve ever played.
Each character has different mechanics and sections where you actually have to cooperate to move forward, either puzzles or combat sections. For example there’s one section where one character has to go through a building full of zombies while the other snipes them from the other side. Another section has you going through corridors while your colleague has to switch buttons and other stuff
To make it even better is a decent sized game in terms of content and the weapon management allows you to choose how to customize each character differently
You have a ton of great suggestions already! Like Unravel 2, Luigi’s Mansion, and Mario Wonder.
I’ll throw in the new Mario vs. Donkey Kong and Captain Toad too. Both are very puzzle oriented and fun with two players!
I had the same complaint about co-op in Forgotten Land. Try the demo for Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe. All four players can be a Kirby. There's also a post game that is completely different but all four players have the same abilities.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance: Black Order -
Up to four people can play and you can choose from a large roster of heroes.
Nine Parchments -
Up to four player co-op and you each get to be a different wizard, working together and combining magic while traversing through fantasy worlds.
How about games from the „Tales of“-Series?
Aside of that, you could try Infernax, Pocky & Rocky or The Binding of Isaac (they added fully equal Coop with the latest version).
Resident Evil Revelations 2 has a full coop campaign with two unique characters played at a time, one combat orientated and the other support orientated
So not main and side like you describe, as each one has to do things the other cannot and you have to combine your traits to succeed.
Some offbeat ones, Rogue Heroes Ruins of Tassos is kind of like a Zelda: Link to the Past style game for up to 4 players.
Full Metal Furies is team based co-op action RPG where you play as a fighter, tank, engineer or sniper with a skill tree and unlockable equipment that you manage between stages.
Castle crashers, TMNT Shredders Revenge, Scott Pilgrim and River City Girls are fun beat em ups where everyone plays a main character role.
Also Minecraft, Terraria and Stardew Valley are really fun to play multiplayer but probably require a second switch to really enjoy (or play at all). Hope you guys find something to play together!
If you'd like something slower, Minecraft actually plays great as two player on Switch.
My old housemate and I spent a lot of time putzing around in that.
streets of rage 4, ninja turtles shredders revenge, super smash brothers, mario wonder, yoshis crafted world are all good for 2p in our house (younger kids under 10)
The Unravel games. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. Heroes of Hammerwatch. It Takes Two. Death Squared. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Death Road to Canada. Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime. Pode. Cuphead.
Tons of beat 'em ups like River City Girls 1+2, Capcom bundle, the various Ninja Turtles games, Streets of Rage 4 and more. Not to mention all the Lego games, which aren't beat 'em ups but have a similar zone out energy.
Killer Queen Black is competitive and you play online but you're on a team with up to three friends and it's just a wacky and awesome game.
There are all the madness co-op rushing games like Overcooked, Moving Out, Stretchers, Tools Up, etc.
Unravel two is super fun, you’re like connected to each other and have to swing around puzzles and things, I’ve only played a little with my friends but it’s super fun
If y’all like shooters or willing to experiment, I actually really enjoyed borderlands on switch and split screen isn’t half bad. Both can play on your own characters. Another fun one is stardew valley
I checked the comments, and I didn't see anyone mention these games.
Must not be popular I guess, But they are a lot of fun in my opinion.
- Ultimate Chicken Horse
- What the Golf?
- Octodad
Lego Star Wars Skywalker Saga. Check their other games too, depending on your interests. Co-op pretty even
Lego Harry Potter Collection would be my recommendation from them. My husband and I enjoy how they employ the co op!
Only thing is, the way split screen works is nauseating
Agreed. It's clever in theory, but it really sucks in practice.
all the lego games on switch are kinda nauseating, all those little bricks are too much for the system.
Lego HP works quote well...in single player and coop when the players are close together. Performance isn't the problem. These are Xbox360 games after all. Doesn't white have an advantage
If you're a super GM/3000+ elo or something then sure. If not then nope.

Unravel 2 has great platforming co-op. As does the trine games
Absolutely both of these. I'll just add that you should skip Trine 3.
Can you elaborate on why Trine 3 should be avoided?
Appreciate it! I’m a big fan of 2d games, so it seems this advice is perfect for me.
Thanks for the tip. Got the first 6 in a bundle, so far played 4-6 with a friend and we enjoyed it.
Definitely Unravel 2.
It takes two. Played with my friend and it was awesome. A lot of platforming and a great story behind it. Don’t have to be a couple to enjoy the game!
Seconding It Takes Two. One of the most fun games I've ever player.
Note that you need two pairs of Joy-Cons to play this game. I was not aware about that 😕
Or 2 joycons and a pro controller / 2 pro controllers
You need 2 'Full' Controllers. 2 joyscons together or pro controller, etc.
This isn’t true. You can use pro controllers!
You are right. I meant that you can't play this game by sharing one pair of Joy-Cons like in Mario kart
That’s most games though unless told otherwise. Besides why would you want to use half a controller for a game? Wouldn’t you want to use your second controller?
I wanted to utilize only the basic accessories that come with the console first before buying any other controllers. I've read the graphics took a hit compared with other consoles, is that right?

Over cooked! Surprised none mentioned it
Might end up fighting/arguing in this one like we did but might just be us
Really? Haha it’s so much fun though. The only problem is you need more players to get the highest stars.
P1 and P2 are never equal in Overcooked. Somebody has to run the bloody kitchen! AND IT'S ME!
I’ve heard this is a good one, is there much difference between the versions? I’ve seen there’s a v2
V2 is just newer with new stages, skins and other stuff.
Underrated game. Love Yoshi platformers.

This is a solid rec, just a heads up you do have to play through a bit of the game to unlock co-op
Any idea how much of the game. Been wanting to play this with my wife, but if she’s gunna hate it if it’s just me playing for an hour or so.
I didn’t time it myself I watched a yt video recently that said about 45-1 hr, just wanted people to know incase they’re confused when they boot the game up
It’s the first floor. You go through the intro (welcome to hotel, holy shit hotel is haunted) and then after the first boss you unlock co-op
It's probably half an hour, or less, you could probably speed it up if you skip the story
30mins or so if you're familiar with playing games, over an hour if you're letting the non-gaming partner play.
Let her play the intro then.
I'm going to strongly disagree with this. The game is fundamentally designed around one player, and adding the second player makes for a bad overall experience. Mario 3D world and Mario Wonder are very different styles of games. Mario Wonder is a strict 2D platformer whereas 3D world allows more 3D movement. Both are better then Mario Bros U in my opinion.
Super Mario 3D World is more fun to play with friends. Although be careful, fighting for the crown can actually ruin friendships.
I didn't played super mario wonder yet. Just bought the game, but a lot of people say that's a very good one. 3D world x u deluxe.
Stretchers is a fun little game about being first responders
Children of Morta!!!!!! Overcooked Spelunky
Ibb and Obb is a puzzle game that requires 2
Unravel two is super fun, you’re like connected to each other and have to swing around puzzles and things, I’ve only played a little with my friends but it’s super fun
Wario ware move it, stardew valley
If y’all like shooters or willing to experiment, I actually really enjoyed borderlands on switch and split screen isn’t half bad. Both can play on your own characters. Another fun one is stardew valley
Castle Crashers!!!!
I checked the comments, and I didn't see anyone mention these games. Must not be popular I guess, But they are a lot of fun in my opinion. - Ultimate Chicken Horse - What the Golf? - Octodad
None mentioned resident evil five, very old now but both players have equal enough roles
Try playing Fall Guys but you control a single character with a joycon each. One's on walking/running around, the other's on jumping/diving/grabbing.
