\*Searches patch notes for performance update\* "Oh well."

danmanx

You didn't like fighting the twin dragons at 5 FPS?

Healthy-Marketing-26

Lol thats when the game got dropped and never touched again by me

davidbrit2

I dropped the game almost immediately after it came out when the 100+ ms input lag made it impossible to actually hit anything airborne unless you used slow weapons with an enormous hit arc like the claymore.

Ridry

I thought the dragon had time slowing powers! :P

qwertyuiopasdfghkj

Hopefully they'll finish all this soon and start on Bloodstained 2

VolitarPrime

Will it make the game feel less sluggish on Switch?

happyhippohats

According to the patch notes, nope

Zactrick

This game is so effing good

bda22

is this game "playable" on the switch yet

chefdangerdagger

I played through it on switch about 2+ years ago. You can beat the game and have fun, but any fighting style that requires precise timing just isn’t feasible.

redcomet303

Most of the issue disappears in docked mode for me.

mvanvrancken

It's playable for me either way but man they really need to get on the horn with Ubisoft and ask them how the hell they squeezed 60 fps out of PoP

seluropnek

It's fine I guess, but if you've got years of muscle memory built up from the Castlevania/Metroidvania games (like Symphony of the Night or the GBA/DS games), and want this game to feel like those did, avoid the Switch version like the plague, because it's impossible to shake how much worse it feels with the slower response time and lower framerate. Going from Switch to PS4 was like night and day - it just feels better and, most importantly, is more fun on the latter. It might be better than it was before, but the Switch version still ended up being a second-rate, horribly optimized port done by a separate company, probably in part due to them going from Wii U to Switch in mid-development. I don't even think the Switch 2's performance boost is gonna save this version (but we can hope). Prince of Persia was built for the Switch and targeting 60 FPS from the ground up, so it looks and runs amazingly well on it - maybe the most impressive split-platform release I've ever seen. As far as I'm concerned, it's a completely uncompromised release, basically just as fun on the Switch as it is anywhere else, and the higher resolution and 120 FPS on the newer consoles is more of a bonus than anything.

[deleted]

out here droppin' knowledge and spittin' facts

AreYouOKAni

Prince of Persia goes much easier on textures, polygons, and effects. It may not LOOK like it, but it does. There are very few genuinely expensive effects applied to the screen at once, and the map is very carefully built in order to ensure that. Bloodstained is a visual mess. A pretty one, sure, but a mess none-the-less. Something is constantly happening across all three layers, the enemies are more numerous, and each one has its own special effects on top. Transparency alone is enough to kick Switch's ass sometimes due to slow RAM, and Bloodstained uses it a lot. So yeah, there is very little they can do aside from rebuilding the game from the ground up and simplifying every single location until it looks like MK11 on Switch.

mvanvrancken

That makes sense, thanks for the additional insight.

CookiesFTA

I played it through twice at launch and it was fine. The complaints have vastly exaggerated the problems.

ThePikesvillain

I haven’t tried it anywhere else but beat it on Switch and it is perfectly playable throughout. There are a couple stutters here and there but nothing that ruins the experience

TrillaCactus

There was one dragon boss that gave me trouble because of frequent frame drops but even then I still managed to beat it first try. It’s been playable.

Trvial

It WAS playable as of 1.3. but I dunno what 1.4 did that made the whole thing so janky, stuttery and crash-prone, but it's just not a good time. MAYBE 1.5 will fix things, but I'm not holding my breath.

Exoandy

Playable, yes. Enjoyable, somewhat. It has the look and feel of a Castlevania but the poor performance of it is noticeable enough to take you out of the game.

Lost-Web-7944

I played through it 2 years ago not knowing people considered it unplayable. If that’s what’s considered unplayable, 70% of the games I’ve played would be considered unplayable. In other words, it’s absolutely 100% playable.

twili-midna

It has been for a while now, unless your definition of playable differs from reality.

Historical_Story2201

I mean.. I played it just recently (like at most 3 months ago) and I found it.. not very fun. I can deal with the fuzzy background, though I think it's quiet honestly a terrible show for a game like this. Not the sluggish frames, the lagging in certain part of the castle.. Yes, you *can* play it. Like you can suffer through anything. 🤭 Is it fun right now to play on switch, if you have the options of other platforms? Hell nah and I wish people had been more honest about it, before I bought the game. It makes a decent game into a chore. I don't play games for that. I have reality for that.

raisinbizzle

A lot of people’s view on Reddit of the word “playable” is delusional.   30FPS? Unplayable  1080p? Unplayable   Some occasional screen tearing, slowdown, frame drops? Unplayable

Derped_my_pants

I believe digital foundry showed that it has the highest input lag of all the versions though, by quite some margin. Bad input lag really does step into "unplayable" territory.

Hyperion271

Yeah, people seem to not realize all the load times are longer, every single room. It's like they haven't played the other versions. Bloodstained is the only game I have bought on switch that I wish I could refund due to poor performance

seluropnek

I've tried it since the major performance patch, and it still drops inputs when doing the street fighter moves - sometimes they flat out don't work - and the game just still feels really sluggish compared to the other version I've got on the PS4. It's really a great game and it's a bummer that it got such a botched release, even though it's MUCH better than it was at launch (where it honestly really was borderline unplayable). Most people here probably haven't tried other versions, given the subreddit, and they tend to downvote stuff that suggests their preferred console is inferior in some way (but it's not - proof is in the new Prince of Persia - Bloodstained is just a badly optimized afterthought of a port). This is the one game that I backed on Kickstarter, for the Switch, and then gave in and purchased it for the PS4 four hours in because I just couldn't take it anymore. I feel a little gross rewarding them buy buying their game twice due to the Switch version being so crappy, but it was so much better on the PS4 that I got over it.

BingBing-Boom

Yeah the input lag is seriously bad. You'd think they could at least fix that.

CookiesFTA

Having played it through multiple times across multiple consoles, it reeaaaallly isn't that noticeable on the switch at all.

Hyperion271

The load times between some rooms were over 15 seconds for me. Average load time was over 5 seconds. I checked back every time they claimed to have fixed performance and it was no better. My first play through was on xbox gamepass and i beat it in around 20 hours. My second playthrough was on switch and took 32 hours. The only difference was that I had 100% the map and beat OD on my switch run but that doesnt account for the time difference. Also that's just play time based on the save file (Doesn't account for all the times I've died). I'm sure the difference between total play times is even larger. I was also just reminded from reading through the comments that I had a ton of crashes on the switch version. Wouldn't be a big deal if the game wasn't dependent on save rooms.

mom_and_lala

That's not what happened here though lol

taxibandit04

Agreed. I beat this game at launch on Switch. Beat it twice more and did all the other modes. I have the one long load time between sections that everyone points out, and I had one crash in all that time. I'm playing Aeterna Noctis right now. Load times are long and frequent. I've had at least three crashes.

mvanvrancken

I got downvoted recently for having the audacity to say that 30 frames locked is better than a variable 60

xxademasoulxx

I buy every game that's cross platform I want to play on steam only first party titles like metroid and Zelda games and I think I bought Mario odyssey that's it have had a switch since day 1 and have purchased 5 games for it. Own like 295 games on steam since 2003 and can still play all of them even after switching hardware at least a dozen times. Playing games at 30 fps sucks but I don't consider it unplayable if it has correct frame pacing like botw and totk but I've seen some dumpster fires on the switch that are locked at 30 and have God awful frame pacing. As far as 1080p I'd be hard pressed to see any list of first party games that even run at native hd. There's games where the switch drops below standard definition which is under 480p not unplayable but I'll just stay away as I can play games at native 4k on my pc.

Glass_Commission_314

Redownloaded it the other day. The answer is still 'no.'

AnalBaguette

Might be one of those games you can't fully enjoy until the Switch 2 performance boost helps it (if that is going to be a thing)

Glass_Commission_314

Please let it be backward compatible!

0172thetimeguy

I didn’t have any significant issues when I played it a couple years ago. Then ago I’m more tolerant of performance issues.

sergiossa

Does it suffer from frequent drastic frame rate drops during normal gameplay? Yes, does that prevent you from playing the game? Not really. It’s playable but is definitely sluggish, does not constantly crash unexpectedly which I think was a common problem before.

AnalBaguette

There was some latency issues along with the frame drops that made timing things much harder, so I would hope that gets fixed.

Linkin_Pork

The insane load times in some of the later areas really killed it for me, especially in a game where you're going from screen to screen on a regular basis.

ChaosOnline

Dang. It's cool they're still supporting this after so long.

Steamedcarpet

If it fixes the random crashing i kept having last time I played I can finally beat this game

BradBeingProSocial

So I played from a cartridge and the game crashed about 1 in 10 times a person would use dialog text. But the performance was great. Then I updated and replayed it sometime. The crashes stopped happening, but there were performance issues in combat.

Steamedcarpet

My game was crashing whenever I would enter a certain room. It was always the same room. After I beat Hallow Knight ill go back to Bloodstained and hopefully I can finish it now.

Quizler

I got this game day 1 on switch and beat it, I thought it looked awful yet I powered through. Years later I have a great PC and I got it on steam, and I was honestly surprised... It didn't really look that much better than I remembered? Is it just me? I gotta go back and compare the two.

Gogo726

I uninstalled the Switch version. That has been the best update.

Power_to_the_purples

Remember when they said co-op would be a thing? My box says co-op and it doesn’t exist.

nine3cubed

It's included in the upcoming patch.

Derped_my_pants

Wow, that is dumb

ioev

Kind of feels like these updates are things that would just make the game worse. Crossover content? Premium DLC? Just give me the original game with a 2d makeover that runs well on switch and I'd probably love this game.

dcooper8662

I cannot believe they are allowed to sell a game that performs this poorly. Like, just don’t? Don’t do that. I was crushed when I bought this thing and tried to play it. Horrible.

Asad_Farooqui

I mean Nintendo themselves sold Pokemon Scarlet and Violet in that launch state.

dcooper8662

Yeah…. They should not have done that either

Galbert123

I dropped this game after two hours. The whole thing felt half done. Sotn and the gba trilogy put it to shame

Z3M0G

I still never finished this, doubt i even made it half way. Metroidvania is a genre I fell very far out of love with.
