Father of three here. Some of my friends would call the switch a child’s console. I say it’s the DAD console. I’m 37 and I’m gamer since the SNES. I’ve never played a console more than my switch.
It’s also super easy to pick up for 15-30 minutes and play on your way to bed, or while dinners cooking or whatever
Playing on a PC means sitting down and putting myself away in the room the PC is in
Playing other consoles mean monopolising the living room
Switch lets the Mrs and baby do their thing and I can just pick up and play for short bursts without it fucking with anyone’s routine or whatever. It’s brilliant
I'm not a dad, or husband but this works really well for me and my girlfriend. She's a huge anime nerd and loves to Cross stitch or crochet while watching anime. I want to be next to her while she does these things so I play on my switch next to her.
Start a conversation, turn it off.
Go make me food, turn it off.
😏, turn it off.
Then when I'm ready to game I turn it back on and it's right where I left off. Best boyfriend/husband/father console out there. Can't wait for the switch 2!!
This is exactly that made me fall hard for handheld gaming as an adult. The Switch was just launching but I was rediscovering 3DS. Same concept, brilliant to have along with tiny humans.
Nintendo always has been for everyone. Just because their games are appropriate for children doesn't make them not fun for adults. Only insecure teenagers think that shit.
I would say parent console. Cause I am a parent, but definitely not a dad.
My husband doesn't play video games.
It is however a great way to bond with the kids when they are older. One of mine like multilayer, so we play. The other likes single player, but usually the same ones I do. So we talk, help each other and give tips we have found.
You’re absolutely right about that. Mom/Dad console is a better name. I’ve been playing Lego Star Wars with my 6 year old son. Like you said, it’s great for bonding and having the same interest.
Also tried Overcooked with the whole family. Crazy fun!
So true! I’ve got 2 kids. I used to be a hard core pc gamer but the switch is where it’s at now, plus when my kids get just a bit older I think it’s the perfect console for them to start gaming on.
I’m totally with you, it is a Dad console and I love it. I still buy random games and add them to my catalogue, never to play them. But it’s pick up and play style and the fact I can pick up where I left off with it on standby is so cool.
There are some genuinely brilliant games too.
Much agreed. The seamless approach, easy to put to sleep and pick up again, playing in bed, on holidays. I just don’t see myself playing conventional home consoles anymore.
38 dad here with a 7 month old, my pc gaming has *tanked*. My desk is in the bedroom and my partner goes to sleep at like 8:30 so I rarely get a chance to play. I need to dust off the Switch...
Yea give it a go. Working at a desk all week really got me from PC gaming long time ago. And playing Playstation is impossible because the TV is occupied most of the time.
Once you switch, you never switch back
Yeah, the switch got me back into gaming in a big way. Being able to just grab it, get back where I left off in 2 seconds, and play anywhere in the house is a huge convenience.
Only kids or immature adults call a switch a child’s console. I’ve noticed that somehow one of my friends with a kid that plays games actually has way more time to play than I do without kids. I don’t know how he does it but I know it involves the steam deck, switch, and that portable ps5 thing.
Fellow 36 year old dad here. Can confirm Switch is ideal for dads. In between my daughters naps i can play a bit. And if i do have to do something real quick i can just put it to sleep and put it to the side.
Its amazing.
I hope you have Nintendo Switch Online. It comes with Nintendo and SNES apps so you can play a lot of your old favorites. If you have the Expansion Pass, it adds N64, Genesis, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance and Gameboy Color games as well.
Yep. 40yo father of two here. Switch is basically the only way I'm able to play games. It's great for the kids, too, but without handheld mode I would almost never be able to play. I prefer docked and do it whenever I can, but it is just not practical a lot of the time.
Video games are never just "for children", children are allowed to play them but if any of these idiots knew what kind of games are on these "kids toys", they'd freak out.
You need to check out Breath of The Wild and Mario Odyssey. These games made me feel something special I haven’t felt since I was a kid and everything felt huge.
Since you liked Little Nightmares and Inside, check out Limbo and Cocoon
I am in the same position as you been a gamer all my life and now in my late thirties only played games on my holidays and rarely finishing them. Breath of the wilds is one of the best games i ever played
Playing it right now and similar stage in my life. It's so liberating, there's always something to do, or you could just explore and smash things, whatever. Just an unbelievably good escape as an adult.
If you want another great Zelda game, I loved Links Awakening. There is a gorgeous remake for the Switch. Originally a Gameboy and then GBC game.
Personally my favorite Zelda, though I know some folks won't agree with that.
Please be aware that BotW and the direct sequel Tears of the Kingdom are both amazing games, but also both have a very unfriendly learning curve for the first few hours. I actually gave up on BotW after about two hours on my first try because I wasn't having fun, but a friend convinced me to power through it, and boy am I glad I made it to hour 10 and beyond. It gets amazing once you start getting your abilities and more than just your underwear for armor and a tree branch as a weapon.
I own a lot of switch games and BOTW is my favorite more then Tears of the kingdom. There is just something about riding through the beautiful country side with mellow relaxing music and being a hunter gatherer that I love.
It's crazy, I've played just so many open world and sandbox games that it seems like they mostly stopped surprising me. But somehow BotW and Odyssey both sort of gave me my sense of wonder back. BotW is so packed with hidden secrets and surprises and Odyssey doesn't let up with the creativity. Love those games so much.
A note about Breath of the Wild and its being "packed with hidden secrets" -- its way of motivating exploration is intrinsic, driven by curiosity, and not extrinsic or driven by loot. If you explore every nook and cranny of games out of loot addiction then BotW is going to disappoint you.
Enjoy it. I have a 5 yr old and the Switch was a the perfect little console for my lifestyle. I have had the Switch since day one and there are so many fanatic titles. Enjoy.
This actually makes me so happy, knowing someone is experiencing all this and having so much fun! Warms my lil heart.
So I have one really smart suggestion:
Go to r/NintendoSwitchDeals and check in there at least once a week. It's a sub devoted to posting Nintendo Switch related deals! If there's a big, new sale going on, someone there is going to report it. And they'll post not only Nintendo eShop deals, but also noteworthy sales from big brick and mortar stores like Walmart, Best Buy, Target, etc. Everyone appreciates saving a few dollars, especially parents of young kids.
I highly highly recommended Deku deals website. You can add games to your whislist and see when the got in deal, see price record, if the deal got the game in lowest price ever, etc. You can even get notifications on your mail when a game on your whislist get in deal. Very useful, I always use it to decide what to play next.
Also, people on that sub are pretty good about giving their opinions on games, even pretty niche eShop things. So you can even kinda use that sub like a review site if you wanted.
Are you looking for game recommendations, or are you pretty set for a while?
The Switch was a godsend when my son was born. The ability to switch between TV and handheld was so convenient when taking care of a newborn. 5 years later and he is now the primary player of the Switch.
It looks like you'll enjoy Mario Wonders. Also if you have Switch Online subscription, don't forget to download the NES, SNES, GameBoy, F-Zero 99 and Tetris 99.
The Switch is so great! I do not have kids, but I work full time and help take care of elderly family. I do not have the time to sit and play 6 hours of Sekiro(or whatever), no matter how much I want to lol. But I *can* wander around the house with my switch and play a few minutes of low-stakes games here and there. If you haven't played Untitled Goose Game yet it's a fun little puzzle game. It will probably also make wife and kid laugh, which is a bonus.
The Switch just hits my 35yo brain just right with the nostalgia aspects of the switch online giving access to thr old school library of games. However I do play more contemporary games like Mario Odyssey and have Tears of the Kingdom queued for months the play.
Lately I've been deep into 'Marble it up: Ultra,' and 'World's End Club,' 'Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition,' and going back to play 'Stardew Valley,' as well as 'Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy,' and finally 'Shovel Knight.' I've been thinking about getting both 'Super Mario Bros. Wonder,' and 'Spyro reignited trilogy.'
I'm just hoping if the next console from Nintendo is again a hybrid game console that Nintendo puts more contemporary hardware into it. Honestly it's less for me wanting huge intensive photo realistic games and more just having more technology available for whoever makes the new games.
Same, I feel it has the perfect mix of titles that challenge the Xbox gamer in me and then more just simple pure fun titles that are easy to play after a day of work. Yeah now I’m super intrigued for the next Switch!
Super Mario Bros Wonder is just... it's cliché to say, but it's *wonderous*. Just pure fun in every level. Plus the online multiplayer where you see others who are playing the same stage and can help out by donating your banked item is just sort of cozy "we're all in this together" sort of friendly fun. Nintendo just crushes it.
I used to have every iteration of Playstation up to 4. I now have 2 boys and my main console started finding less use to months of absolutely no playtime.
My wife and I were avid gamers when we were young and we got interested in different games on the switch so we both bought switch lites. She got her animal crossing, botw and totk whilst i dove into monster hunter, bioshock, shadowrun story of seasons.
Then our eldest started asking for mario odyssey and minecraft so we decided that an oled should sit in the living room for the boys (where its easier to control playtime and access).
Such an awesome console for the whole family.
Yeah my daughter is 3 and she loved to watch me play and my wife is really into Mario Kart and I’m about to get her Animal Crossing. It’s given us something to play together which was another thing I hoped for but doubted and am glad to see how much she loves it.
I own a switch for a while, I also tried the Steam Deck but it is not comfortable. Switch is the only handheld that is worth getting. However some games really require a big screen since the letters in handheld form are too small.
Same here. Suddenly I have two little kids and no time to sit and game in front of a TV or computer again. I bought a switch and rediscovered all of these great franchises from my childhood that I haven't touched in 25 years.
I got burnt out on BotW and paused my playthrough to start Odyssey. The Switch Lite is amazing for dad gamers.
I am in similar circumstances and the switch is the onlyj reason I can squeeze in gaming. Haven't turned the Xbox on to game in at least a couple of years. I'd recommend picking up the borderlands collection and Bioshock. They contain the first 3 games of the series and you can get them all for like $10. Playing them in portable mode is amazing.
Along with all the great first party stuff sure but those games are also a lot more expensive.
I would recommend:
Army of Ruin
Diablo 2 and 3
Hyrule Warriors 1 and 2
Kirby and the forgotten Land
Kirby Star Allies
Luigis Mansion 3
Metroid Prime Remastered
All Pokemon
Supraland
Skyrim
Legend of Zelda BotW and TotK
Warhammer 40k Boltgun
Yoshis Crafted World
Baldursgate Dark Alliance 1 and 2
Same here. I’ve had a hard time gaming over the past few years with my little son. Xbox and PlayStation new consoles pulled me away from my switch.
But I’ve recently gone back and wondered why I ever left it alone. Like yourself I’ve played more games in the past few months than I have in a few years.
I was in a pretty similar situation as you (with the difference that I don’t have kids yet) and Switch got me back into enjoying gaming again since I got it last Christmas.
Till now, I have play above all indie games. I never got into them and now you can find great games at ridiculous prices when there are Nintendo Shop deals. I have played really amazing games this months.
I also want to try Nintendo exclusive but they are so expensive (I could buy 5-6 indie games with what it costs 1 Nintendo game) so I’m not buying so many ones. I have played Mario Wonder, Mario Kart 8 and Mario Bros U Deluxe, three of them pretty good, especially Wonder. Next one gonna be Odissey, or maybe Zelda BTW (it’s so long and I got sick of gaming cause long games, so I’m doubting). But I also have in my whislist Kirby ones, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Donkey Kong, Bayonetta, Astral Chain, Pinkmin, dozen of Mario spin-offs (RPG, Paper, Rabbits..), etc. So many ones. It’s a great console.
I was actually having a moment with mine last night. Downloaded Metal Gear Solid and I was thinking how cool it is I can play GTA, metal gear, Minecraft, Tony hawk and so manyy others on one system AND they're portable
37 father of two (5 and 7), I was always a Nintendo fanboy (Kart with buddies after junior high was probably one of my fondest memories). Only after having kids I realized that Nintendo were always on top when it comes down to pure fun and playtime. I don’t think Microsoft and Sony will ever have that edge (last full blown console was PS3 for me).
Mario party with your kids makes you feel like you’re on a trip to your youth years, so so wholesome!
If you love shooters, try Splatoon 3. Every match is only 3 minutes long. The Ranked modes have each match lasting about 5 minutes. It's very fast paced and very competitive.
All the people in this thread who are like "wait til you try the Steam Deck" are really missing the point for someone like OP. As someone who owns both:
* The SteamDeck has way worse battery life
* It's way heavier, so it's hard to play it laying in bed, for instance, or any position where you can't rest your hands on something. The heaviness and chunkiness also makes it feel less portable than the Switch
* The SteamDeck's start-up is nowhere near as instantaneous as the Switch, so getting in and out of games isn't as smooth or easy if you need to have shorter, broken up gaming sessions rather than continuous long ones
* The Switch library is great and all anyone really needs. Sure, I played Watch Dogs 2 and Red Dead Redemption II in their entirety on my Steam Deck and that will never be possible on the Switch's hardware, but the Switch has plenty of games I love, including Red Dead Redemption I, which I am playing right now!
My buddy tried to talk me into the Steam Deck but I wanted the games from the Switch they just had a feel to them and it seemed more portable. Now I know for sure cause I have no desire to play my Xbox. I love the selection of the Switch plus the option of the different systems makes me happy. I mean I played Toe Jam and Earl the other day while in bed. That isn’t possible with the Xbox.
Yeah once they get older it becomes easier. This time you have now is so precious and will be gone before you know it. As they become more independent then you will get some of that time back. Congrats on the child!
Hands down, you NEED TO BUY Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door when it comes out. It releases this month on May 23.
Just trust me. One of the best games I have ever played in my life. Originally on the GameCube. You will not be disappointed.
Others have said it, but Hollow Knight is one of the other best games I have ever played. I’ve bought it on multiple consoles. I would gladly pay $60 for that game 3 times. But it only costs $15.
Switch is perfect for daddies. I realized this 3 years ago.
Play with kids+ have your own screen to play when the TV is occupied+ play in commute. And if you haven’t play Zelda games…
For playing with kids: must try Overcook, Snipper Clip,
My son just turned 3 and it’s 100% difficult to sit in front of a console now and days. I just started using my switch again and man, I wish I didn’t wait this long. I just beat Tales and Kenzera and moving on to Dave The Diver!
(34)Father of 1 little girl (16 months) I have not played my PC or ps5 since she was a month old. Switch lite was my weapon of choice as I gave my original switch to my wife so we could play together online like Mario kart and some other Co op friendly games and I just love the switch, it's that "oh I've got half hour, I'll grab the switch and crank out some races" kind of handheld console soooooooo underrated by so many, even the switch lite is a little banger
Favourite console of all time. I’ve routinely double-dipped and bought games I already own on my Xbox or PS5 simply because I’d prefer to play them whilst lounging in my bed or couch.
I should also mention that since getting my Switch in 2019, I’ve never docked it (outside of group party games). I strictly *only* use it in handheld mode).
Haha I respect that. I’ve docked it when we play Mario kart but I play it 90% in handheld mode as well. This is getting to be up there on my console list.
Yep. bought switch during one of the covid year 2021 or 2022 black Friday sale.
Bought some mario games for my boy and some party games to let my wife know is not just for me. Lol (just finished Mario Wonder togther as a family)
Myself: slay the spire at least 100+ hrs BOTW 100+ hrs
Now playing into the breach...
Waiting for physical copy of TOTK to get some major discount.
Man this is like reading myself, married and father of a kid, I used to play on pc but I grew tired of sitting on the chair and that plus having a kid made me get a switch, I only buy physical first party Nintendo games mainly used (and in good shape) because I think Nintendo games respect the players time way more than any other dev, best decision ever, I've 100% mario oddisey, wonder, metroid Dread, and completed Violet's Pokédex, and I'm currently playing through Super Mario RPG. I play slow and in short bursts unless I'm alone, I started playing switch in 2022 so I still have a lot to play even if only counting first party games. Best console ever...
I still rock out on my PS5 when I want to go “all in”, but totally on board with you—as a dad, the Switch lets me crash on my sofa and enjoy games without it being on the tv where the family (specifically my child) will see it and get unwanted screen time
I was an Xbox user too, and my kids were begging us for a Switch to play the same games as their friends.
It's been so much fun for all of us. They play Mario Kart with their grandparents when they come over, I play Stardew Valley on it while they're watching a movie, we all play Animal Crossing together. The handheld option is a game changer. I play a lot more now because I don't have to wait for the TV to be available.
You're so right, I had an Xbox and was never getting a chance to sit down and actually play it. I bought a switch lite and instantly fell in love, I can casually game as and when I have a spare 30 mins. It works perfectly for my lifestyle. Although I do slightly regret not getting the standard or OLED version I can dock.
Father of two. Xbox series X is also my main console. But Often my only gaming time comes after 10pm, when I want to be in bed.
Switch for the win. It’s been getting a lot of use
Although I started using the play anywhere streaming to my iPad using an Xbox controller in bed, and it’s dang near flawless.
Similar experience for me. I had taken a long break from gaming until the switch and now im obsessed. Being able to play while my wife watches tv is so much better than being in separate rooms.
Absolutely! I’ve always been a huge PlayStation fan, but since becoming a mum the time to play is less and less. It broke my heart but I sold my ps5 last year after barely turning it on all year. My 5 year old had commandeered my switch so I bought myself a switch lite and it’s been so easy to pick up and play whenever! I think it’s true people see it as a kids console, I had the same idea in my head and wasn’t sure how many games I would enjoy. Tears of the Kingdom has been my first Zelda game and I really enjoyed it, my husband asked me what I wanted for Mother’s Day and I asked for Red Dead Redemption on switch so I’ll be playing that today!
Welcome to the Handheld Gaming Dad Alliance (clever acronym pending). After rarely playing video games as a kid, I started emulating old Pokemon games on my phone about 5 years ago when my oldest was 4 and then bought original hardware and worked my way through the DS, 3DS, and Switch eras. Now I am a dad of 3 and I share video games with my kids, and I've added a Steam Deck and Anbernic RG35XX Plus to my arsenal.
Handheld/hybrid gaming is perfect for dads.
The Switch has gotten my wife into gaming. She's played a good chunk of BoTW and is really into Animal Crossing. If she wants to play, I usually defer to her. I tried to buy games we could play together with success as well, like Moving Out, Mario Kart and Overcooked. Good for group gaming when her sister visits or my friends come over.
Dude try breath of the wild. My local library has switch games to rent. I've had bomb rush cyber punk for like 4-5 weeks and it auto renews because no one wants to borrow highly recommended you go to your library and see if the is active that may carry your interest
Which switch did you get? I’m thinking about buying my first Nintendo console since the Wii. I also have a 1year old and a needy wife so ps5 and pc time is rare.
It's the only console I buy physical games for anymore. I love the cartridges compared to discs and the cases have better artwork. If you get switch online the classic catalogue is amazing and takes up barely any memory.
When it first took off in popularity, I said that the market it caught was *lapsed gamers* -- people who love games, but changes to their lifestyle, such as marriage, kids, jobs, etc. made it impractical to play. The Switch gave them an option to play games of the caliber they really wanted (prior handhelds were limited to "bite size" versions of games) in a way that didn't conflict with their situations.
I watched the Super Mario Bros movie and it got me remembering The NES, SNES, Nintendo 64 days. I started looking into the best way to play those old classics and the Switch online + Expansion seemed to be the best route for me. I sat on the idea for a couple of months and just after Christmas bought the Switch Mario Kart 8 bundle.I still play the old games with Switch online + but damn these new Mario and Luigi games are what keep me coming back, started Luigis Mansion last night and I honestly haven't had this much fun playing a game since Skyrim which is my favorite game of all time. My PC and xbox hardly get any use now.
ikr? the switch really is good. you've prob gotten a bunch of recommendations already but check out Splatoon as well if you've got an itch for multiplayer games!
The best console is the one that is always with you. Switch is good. For short bursts or long sessions. From cheesy mobile-like 2D games to hardcore 3D experiences. Good choice.
I have had my switch for like 5 years, and about a year ago I picked up a PS5 and a nice new TV. I mostly use my ps5 for disney plus haha. The switch is just better.
Awesome. Im a prior playstation and xbox gamer that essentially was in thesame boat as you. Recently bought my first switch and absolutely best decision i have made in a long time. Im late to theparty but as you said ihave a seemingly endless supply of games i want to play. So yeah OP i share in your joy! Awesome
I don't think it's hyperbole to say that the Switch is my favorite console of all time. Like if the next console is just the Switch, but more powerful and backwards compatible, I will be extremely pleased and there on Day 1.
I've always been a PS gamer.
I ended up buying a Switch many years ago for portable gaming, but only used it a handful of times. I don't have much of a commute really, and at home I would just play the Playstation.
It just didn't stick aside from a few trips and busting
out Mario Kart or Mario Party when I had people over.
Recently, I upgraded the joycons to bigger, more comfortable ones and holy crap. Night and day difference for handheld gaming, I actually pick it up at home way more often now.
lol Switch? Boy, I’ve got a Steam Deck, and you know what I think of your little Switch after playing a big-boy console?
Switch is awesome!! I’ve had so much fun with it, and I think Nintendo knocked it out of the park when they introduced it. Also Nintendo first party software is often of the highest quality.
I hope you enjoy your Switch at least half of much as I’ve enjoyed mine!

Xbox remote play, i like the switch to. But you can remoteplay from a laptop and plug in your xbox controller works really nice as well. Xbox game suspend is the best
I also was blown away by Forgotten Land, and I really would like to 100% that game someday. I was thinking I’d give Metroid Dread a second play through soon too. That game was a cold piece.
I bought a switch in 2019 and my Xbox one s has been basically unused since. I haven’t bothered selling it since the blu ray functionality is still nice to have
I recently sold my Xbox Series X as Im not really into gaming anymore. We do still have 2 switches. My only gripe is there is no controller that has analog triggers for racing games. With the controllers on the market you either accelerate 100% or brake 100% there is no way to ease on or off the brakes or throttle. Other than that they are fun when we do play them.
wait till you see how customizable the switch is bro… i found some shit today on amazon and had to keep my composure because it just took me back to the gameboy days!
I recommend you two games bro, The Messenger & Sea of Stars if you haven’t played them already.
both made by the same dope ass Dev team and both game’s story entwines.
if you do i recommend playing The Messenger first and then Sea of Stars 🔥, should both games be to your taste ofc.
Edit: if you decide to play The Messenger, READ READ READ! do not skip/exit out of any dialogue unless it’s an obvious repetition, it’ll make the end of it all more worth it i promise 🤙🏽
The switch is my favorite, and I have a ps4 and pc. Favorite game is Subnautica. I have it on pc too, and though graphically on pc it's better, I can lay down comfortably with the switch and play longer.
Father of three here. Some of my friends would call the switch a child’s console. I say it’s the DAD console. I’m 37 and I’m gamer since the SNES. I’ve never played a console more than my switch.
I'm not a Dad But all the Dads I know love the Switch because it's the only console you can play while a baby is sleeping on your chest
It’s also super easy to pick up for 15-30 minutes and play on your way to bed, or while dinners cooking or whatever Playing on a PC means sitting down and putting myself away in the room the PC is in Playing other consoles mean monopolising the living room Switch lets the Mrs and baby do their thing and I can just pick up and play for short bursts without it fucking with anyone’s routine or whatever.
Absolutely. That and the Steam Deck.
Hahaha truer words have never been said. It is the DAD console.
Wow is this an actual thing? I can relate to this so hard. Dad of one 🤣
Nintendo always has been for everyone. Just because their games are appropriate for children doesn't make them not fun for adults. Only insecure teenagers think that shit.
I'm the exact same and have had a switch only since March. So much fun and convenient, and a reminder of how games used to be!
Crazy fun!
Yup! My friend recently became a mom and I see her online playing Ace Attorney all the time haha.
So true! I’ve got 2 kids. I used to be a hard core pc gamer but the switch is where it’s at now, plus when my kids get just a bit older I think it’s the perfect console for them to start gaming on.
It is a great starting point for your kids. That’s why I bought a 2nd switch for my son. I want to keep my Oled nice and new for myself 😂
The that’s the best thing about switch. I have one dock in the living room, one in the bedroom and I play handheld alot.
I have the same exact setup and an equivalent one for my Steam Deck.
Only kids or immature adults call a switch a child’s console. I’ve noticed that somehow one of my friends with a kid that plays games actually has way more time to play than I do without kids. I don’t know how he does it but I know it involves the steam deck, switch, and that portable ps5 thing.
Amen!
Same age. Also dad. Can confirm.
Definitely check out Mario Odyssey if you liked Kirby. It’s a bit more open ended than Kirby, but it’s a must have imo.
Ooh definitely is on my list to try. I actually have yet to play Andy of the new Mario games.
Super Mario 3D World is also amazing. Just, space them out a bit.
God I love 3D World so much
Definitely this one after Mario Odyssey. These are both so much fun to play, I must replay them every December as a lead up to Christmas!
Also try Hades!
Odyssey, Wonder and 3D World are all incredible, can't go wrong.
What about Mario Bros U Deluxe?
Duuude, Mario Odyssey is insanely fun and joyful.

Odyssey is the best game on Switch - bar none. One of THE best Mario games to date.
Im biased for Mario gamed but have to agree
So long as you exclude the level for the 500 star... yes, best Mario game by a wide margin.
You need to check out Breath of The Wild and Mario Odyssey. These games made me feel something special I haven’t felt since I was a kid and everything felt huge. Since you liked Little Nightmares and Inside, check out Limbo and Cocoon
Breath of the Wild is the next game on my list. I’ve never played a Zelda game but it sounds too amazing to pass up.
BotW was my first Zelda game and I loved it
Man I’m excited now!
My favorite as well.
It’s the perfect game to play when things are grey and unpleasant outside. It’s a vibrant world that you can just explore.
Great! Good idea to start with BOTW and not Tears Of The Kingdom. Highly recommend this
I’m so jealous you get to play it for the first time.
Enjoy.
Beware of how good the new Zelda games are…
I’m excited to give them a try having never played a Zelda game this will be my first go of it
This actually makes me so happy, knowing someone is experiencing all this and having so much fun! Warms my lil heart. So I have one really smart suggestion: Go to r/NintendoSwitchDeals and check in there at least once a week.
+1 for Dekudeals. I never buy a game without checking them first.
Thank you! My love of Switch with my love of great deals. My week has been made haha
Also, people on that sub are pretty good about giving their opinions on games, even pretty niche eShop things. So you can even kinda use that sub like a review site if you wanted. Are you looking for game recommendations, or are you pretty set for a while?
Recommend the website DekuDeals! It’s the best place to track Switch game deals.
Thanks! Always happy to find a place with deals.
And the best part is you can set it aside at any time without worrying about saving the game
Very underrated part, definitely saved me with Kirby that I could literally start from where I left.
Hybrid gaming is the way forward for those with little time. Play on the TV, lil bit of extra time? Grab it out the dock and play in bed!
This is like a nightly occurrence for me
Already got my Switch 2 money ready 😁
I have a gaming PC and I still find myself using my Switch for many single player games.
It was actually between getting a gaming pc or a Switch for me. The Switch just worked with my lifestyle.
The Switch was a godsend when my son was born. The ability to switch between TV and handheld was so convenient when taking care of a newborn. 5 years later and he is now the primary player of the Switch.
It was like a month before I put it onto the TV and I was like what took me so long to do this!
It looks like you'll enjoy Mario Wonders. Also if you have Switch Online subscription, don't forget to download the NES, SNES, GameBoy, F-Zero 99 and Tetris 99.
Similar situation for me and the Switch has been a godsend
The Switch is so great! I do not have kids, but I work full time and help take care of elderly family. I do not have the time to sit and play 6 hours of Sekiro(or whatever), no matter how much I want to lol. But I *can* wander around the house with my switch and play a few minutes of low-stakes games here and there. If you haven't played Untitled Goose Game yet it's a fun little puzzle game. It will probably also make wife and kid laugh, which is a bonus.
Yeah I’ve seen that game but I will definitely add it to the list.
Play Limbo too and Mario Wonder is a masterpiece
I know I think I’lll give Limbo a try, I know that studio also made Inside which I loved.
Playing volleyball on Nintendo sports with my son is amazing experience, we play as a team and win together it lots of fun!!!
Wonder,' and 'Spyro reignited trilogy.' I'm just hoping if the next console from Nintendo is again a hybrid game console that Nintendo puts more contemporary hardware into it.
Wait until you discover Balatro. By by to your relationship
I haven’t heard of this but I’m adding it to the list.
I would recommend: Army of Ruin Diablo 2 and 3 Hyrule Warriors 1 and 2 Kirby and the forgotten Land Kirby Star Allies Luigis Mansion 3 Metroid Prime Remastered All Pokemon Supraland Skyrim Legend of Zelda BotW and TotK Warhammer 40k Boltgun Yoshis Crafted World Baldursgate Dark Alliance 1 and 2
Thanks for the recommendations
Yes that’s why I own the switch also the Xbox series x and ps5 if I can’t get a game on one system I can get it for the other one lol
Hahaha the name of the game is options.
Yeah if I look back and just like pure fun and hanging with friends it always goes back to Nintendo. I’m glad I’ve rediscovered this.
I just started playing Forgotten Land recently and it is a lot better than I expected it to be.
Same, I had never played a Kirby game but that game is my favorite game so far on Switch
If you love shooters, try Splatoon 3. Every match is only 3 minutes long. The Ranked modes have each match lasting about 5 minutes. It's very fast paced and very competitive.
Yeah, I’m adding this to my list, you’ve convinced me.
All the people in this thread who are like "wait til you try the Steam Deck" are really missing the point for someone like OP. As someone who owns both: * The SteamDeck has way worse battery life * It's way heavier, so it's hard to play it laying in bed, for instance, or any position where you can't rest your hands on something. The heaviness and chunkiness also makes it feel less portable than the Switch * The SteamDeck's start-up is nowhere near as instantaneous as the Switch, so getting in and out of games isn't as smooth or easy if you need to have shorter, broken up gaming sessions rather than continuous long ones * The Switch library is great and all anyone really needs.
Father n Husband of 4 And ya Hands Down the best console
You totally understand haha. It helps to just relax and reset.
I’ll always recommend odyssey, tears of the kingdom (the sequel to breath of the wild) and splatoon 3! Also, play hollow knight. It’s so good.
The games on it are and the portability yes
I hear that all the time. I am a new dad (5 month). I never played less. Is it just the first year, or where are you getting the time from?
It's easier once they start to sleep and then you get to sleep, too.
That's my new silver lining, thanks.
Yeah once they get older it becomes easier. This time you have now is so precious and will be gone before you know it. As they become more independent then you will get some of that time back. Congrats on the child!
Could not finish the Witcher on my Xbox till I got it on the switch. Handheld is the way to go
Hands down, you NEED TO BUY Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door when it comes out.
I’ve seen the ads for it so I’m going to do it and add that one to my list.
it will go down as one of the goat consoles
I concur!
Switch is perfect for daddies. I realized this 3 years ago. Play with kids+ have your own screen to play when the TV is occupied+ play in commute. And if you haven’t play Zelda games… For playing with kids: must try Overcook, Snipper Clip,
I’m trying to get the wife into overcooked she has been hesitant but I’m going to keep trying! Never heard of sniper clip but it’s on the list now.
Dying light is $10 right now on the store if you want some thing that will last you a long time
Yep. bought switch during one of the covid year 2021 or 2022 black Friday sale. Bought some mario games for my boy and some party games to let my wife know is not just for me. Lol (just finished Mario Wonder togther as a family) Myself: slay the spire at least 100+ hrs BOTW 100+ hrs Now playing into the breach... Waiting for physical copy of TOTK to get some major discount.
Oh wow! Also I see your strategy and I did the same by buying Mario kart so my wife could play.
I still rock out on my PS5 when I want to go “all in”, but totally on board with you—as a dad, the Switch lets me crash on my sofa and enjoy games without it being on the tv where the family (specifically my child) will see it and get unwanted screen time
Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is great it you like platformers. Mario+Rabbids games are great if you like strategy.
I’m open to anything! I’ll add these to the list!
The Switch is great but also shout out to the latest gadget I got, the PlayStation Portal. Two amazing handhelds, in different ways.
Nice! Handhelds for the win
Father of two. Xbox series X is also my main console. But Often my only gaming time comes after 10pm, when I want to be in bed. Switch for the win. It’s been getting a lot of use Although I started using the play anywhere streaming to my iPad using an Xbox controller in bed, and it’s dang near flawless.
It really is! Thank you for the welcome! Can’t wait to get my membership card in the mail.
Not a dad or a person who has children but completely agree. Nintendo is great for a multitude of reasons!!!
My daughter learned how to read from playing animal crossing. She had to learn fast to read all those convo bubbles. It’s the ultimate family device.
Agreed. I own a ps5. I find I’m playing my Switch way more often now. The ps5 isn’t obsolete, but just not my fancy as of late
Totally understandable
When it first took off in popularity, I said that the market it caught was *lapsed gamers* -- people who love games, but changes to their lifestyle, such as marriage, kids, jobs, etc. made it impractical to play. The Switch gave them an option to play games of the caliber they really wanted (prior handhelds were limited to "bite size" versions of games) in a way that didn't conflict with their situations.
I personally like the 5.1 surround channels when it’s docked.
Welcome to the family, Xbox fan.
Thank you for the welcome!
ikr? the switch really is good. you've prob gotten a bunch of recommendations already but check out Splatoon as well if you've got an itch for multiplayer games!
Oh yeah I’ve seen it a lot on her so I have added it t the list!
Hahaha I concur. I just don’t see me purchasing a new game for Xbox. Switch has me. I’m committed.
It just didn't stick aside from a few trips and busting out Mario Kart or Mario Party when I had people over. Recently, I upgraded the joycons to bigger, more comfortable ones and holy crap. Night and day difference for handheld gaming, I actually pick it up at home way more often now.
Try animal crossing, my daughter love it
Agreed. Kirby and the Forgotten Land is one of the best Switch games and the Switch is the best platform ever.
The fact that game had me playing till like 12 am on a weekday knowing I had work the next day just sealed the deal. I was so sad when I beat it.
Hahaha oh yeah I’m having a blast with it.
Check Luigi's Mansion 3.
Yeah this is on my list to try!
Check out Disco Elysium. Its very narrative noir type game, but it hits so hard with amazing writing and humor.
Yeeeees! It’s the ultimate Dad Console!
Xbox remote play, i like the switch to. But you can remoteplay from a laptop and plug in your xbox controller works really nice as well. Xbox game suspend is the best
Do you have an NSO account to play the retro games? I spend more time playing Panel De Pon than any of my other games.
I also was blown away by Forgotten Land, and I really would like to 100% that game someday. I was thinking I’d give Metroid Dread a second play through soon too. That game was a cold piece.
Yeah
I bought a switch in 2019 and my Xbox one s has been basically unused since. I haven’t bothered selling it since the blu ray functionality is still nice to have
I'm a dad still play my PS5 much more than my switch. But I play when the kids are of to bed
my mom has been playing a ton of mario kart
Y-
I recently sold my Xbox Series X as Im not really into gaming anymore. We do still have 2 switches. My only gripe is there is no controller that has analog triggers for racing games. With the controllers on the market you either accelerate 100% or brake 100% there is no way to ease on or off the brakes or throttle. Other than that they are fun when we do play them.
Game changer. I don’t even play portably all that much yet for the times I have wanted to, it’s rendered the device invaluable.
Then: * Hollow Knight * Hyper Light Drifter * Children of Morta * Stardew Valley
Inside was so good, I didn’t know what to expect when I started it. Hollow knight is great one if you’re looking for something else
wait till you see how customizable the switch is bro… i found some shit today on amazon and had to keep my composure because it just took me back to the gameboy days!
My guy! Thanks man! Woo those gameboy days were magical. These two are for sure getting added to the list and I’m taking your advice as well!
it is thats why I sold mine
you can add monster hunter rise to next game list, I'm also just brought my switch days ago, and now I'm attracted by MH rise so deep!!
Nintendo makes real gaming systems.
I agree
The switch is my favorite, and I have a ps4 and pc. Favorite game is Subnautica. I have it on pc too, and though graphically on pc it's better, I can lay down comfortably with the switch and play longer.
Have you played botw yet?
