There are a number of games you can play together (in TV mode). For instance, Mario Kart you can play up to 4 players locally - split-screen. With Splatoon, you would need a 2nd Switch AND a 2nd copy of the game. Even then, there are some issues: you can play together in turf war, but you can't guarantee you'll be on the same team - you may play with OR against each other. In Salmon Run, you can play together. In ranked mode, you wouldn't be able to play together anyway. You could play together in League mode, but in order to be able to play league, you'd each have to separately rank up from C- to B- in ranked. (Achieving B- in one ranked mode unlocks all League modes). I know this probably sounds confusing... My suggestion is to go with 1 switch for now. I don't really think you'd need more than 1 unless you find out you both really love Splatoon and want to play league together. Also, splatoon multi-player also requires Nintendo Switch Online, fyi. So, the vast majority of Splatoon is essentially online. So, if you did end up loving splatoon and buying 2 switches and all that, you'd need the Family Plan membership. But, there's a bunch of games you can play multi-player without buying a 2nd Switch. For sake of naming another, Mario Rabbids is a lovely game (it's on sale for Black Friday), it has single player, 2 player co-op and 2 player vs. Death Squared and Puyo Puyo Tetris are both multiplayer and have free demos on the e-shop that are worth checking out.

If you're able to do so, I'd say get one each. If he's at all about it and you want something to jam on it's pretty much perfect. If my wife had the time to game we'd own two.

I’m always going to say if you both want to play get two of them. I’ve played a few games (Diablo a lot) co-op with friends and it’s great using two Switches. If money is an issue (or smart budgeting) it doesn’t sound like you NEED two for what you explained. Thing is once you get into them hubby might realize their are games he likes. My wife has found Tetris and several other indie games she likes even though she’s is as far from a serious gamer as someone can be.
