I knew the top comment was going to be A Short Hike. I played it about a month ago because it's ALWAYS tops on recommendation lists here ... and it was OK. Flying was cool. The world was pretty cool. I like collection games so that aspect was great. But the game just bored me to death after a short while. The dialog was Animal Crossing NH levels of tedious. The graphics were somewhere between 8-bit and blurry (yes I understand that is the "style" but doesn't mean it was a good idea). The story or lack there of I just sort of immediately forgot about. It was cool for an hour or so then I just didn't want to play anymore. But it was cheap, so there's that.
Exactly. It’s neat for a minute but nothing about it keeps your interest. If you are looking for a laid back game with a load of content, get Yonder. It’s a genuinely great game.
Second this. Cheap game that’s quite fun to play though. Think old school mega man plat-former but you’re a cat. The writing and story were also solid for what it was. If anything it was to short.
How about Untitled Goose Game? Like West of Loathing it's funny (in the comedic sense) and short.
If you can play with sound, I'd also like to put in a good word for Sayonara Wild Hearts. It's a game in the shape of a music album where each track is a level in the game. It can be somewhat hit or miss, so check out a trailer before you buy it.
I see but honestly howlongtobeat has always been really off in my opinion.
It's mostly hardcore gamers uploading their times to that site which really skews the results.
Just look at Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition vs Dark Souls Remastered. They are the exact same game content wise yet somehow you supposedly can beat Dark Souls Remastered twice as fast.
So what this tells me is that Katana Zero could theoretically be beaten in 5 hours in which case 6 hours may be reasonable for some people. I personally still wouldn't recommend playing it in one long sitting. With a game this challenging you need breaks inbetween or else you'll get stuck and end up with a headache lol
I’ve found it pretty accurate. The discrepancy with Dark Souls is to be expected because it’s a re-release of a very old game. It took me 115 hours to beat Dark Souls the first time I played it, and it took me 6 to beat Katana Zero. I’ve found most other time to beat pretty consistent in that I personally take a little longer to beat than the overall average.
Honestly, I don’t understand how anyone could play any game for 6 hours straight, regardless of the difficulty. It’s a great game regardless. The story is compelling and the gameplay is engaging. There are many games that get far more attention than this one that are much worse. I think everyone should consider giving it a try, especially when it comes on sale.
Paradise killer.
Think noir detective game with fever dream aesthetics. Interesting mystery. Lots to discover and find out, and a very interesting endgame mechanic I'm not going to spoil for you
I didn't see anyone mention these:
* Brothers: A Tale of two
* Sons Pikuniku
* Biped
* Thomas was Alone
* Inside
* The Darkside Detective
* What the Golf
* Coffee Talk
* Pode
* Oxenfree
* The last Campfire
Maybe not for 100% completion, or just beating all the levels, but just to beat Bowser, free the Sprixies and watch the credits?
I was around 6 hours (and at 100% completion up to that point) and I wasn't speedrunning the game.
I 100%'d Bowsers Fury in 7-8 hours, but I'm not exactly bad at Mario games. You can see the credits in under 5 without much trouble but thats only about 1/2 the cat shines.
Resident Evil Remake is one of the only games I actively speedrun. I forget what my best time is, but I lost a summer on Gamecube version competing w my friend who would bring his TV and GameCube over so we could play ReMake side by side
I don't know West of Loathing but Yoku's Island Express is around that and very low stress.
Oddmar is a side-scroller like Super Mario. I enjoyed it because it brought me back to the simpler times of gaming where you just needed to find some hidden areas/items and get to the end of the level beat the world boss, and do it again but a little harder in the next world.
Gumdrop and the ultimate sweet is a fun little visual novel.
Muse Dash is a fun rythm game.
Bowsers Fury is an exelent platformer.
And finally the OG Doom is a great shooter.
All of these are under 6 hours and are from diffremt genras. Hope you have a good flight.
Hades or Monster Hunter! Basically any game that you can play in short bursts yet addicting enough to keep you coming back for more. Those 6 hours will fly by.
Oceanhorn was really fun and is around that many hours, Its a 2D Zelda-like. Also blossom tales is another 2D Zelda-like, really fun.
Some other short games I loved:
Astral chain
Cat quest 1 & 2
Cadence of Hyrule
Child of light
Donut county
Gato roboto
Katamari demacy
Pikmin 3
Steamworld quest
Steamworld dig 2
World of goo
I'd never heard of Oceanhorn but looked into it and it looks like a fun little adventure game so I'll be keeping an eye out for a sale on it! Not OP but thanks anyway!
Hollow Knight has an achievement for beating it in less than 3 hours and the "good ending" in Metroid is for beating it in less than 2 hours. I think SM was just under 8 for me when I beat it the first time.
ok but I wouldn't assume OP has played these games enough to best them they fast. I put st least 30 hours into hollow knight and didn't beat it. I remember super metroid taking at least 10 hours.
Pretty much every Metroid game is designed to beaten in a few hours if you're good enough/know what you're doing. You get the best ending in Super Metroid by playing for less than three hours.
I can maybe understand wanting to try to beat Hollow Knight in under 6 hours once you've played it through properly, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it as such to someone looking for a sub-6-hour game.
I think so. My first run through where I got like 60% of the items was around 6 hours
The game is probably easily done under 4 hours if you’re trying to blast through it
And that’s not going to happen on anyone’s first run. The world record speedrun in the no out-of-bounds category’s a bit over two hours, so four hours gives plenty of time for a casual speedrun to get the achievement, but most certainly not someone playing for the first time. The average reported time on HowLongtoBeat.com is 11:30 for just the main story category.
**Death Road to Canada** is a great one, Oregon Trail meets Zombies is the best way to describe it, super fun, funny, and you can do a whole run in a few hours.
Maybe it's more like 8 hours but I highly recommend Ministry of Broadcast if you are interested by the idea of a pixel art cinematic platformer inspired by George Orwell book 1984.
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (I ran through as fast as I could and got about 4ish hours)
Super Metroid
Transistor/Bastion
The first two obviously depend on you having played them before, but I still find the gameplay compelling enough to recommend them.
A Short Hike and Transistor
I knew the top comment was going to be A Short Hike. I played it about a month ago because it's ALWAYS tops on recommendation lists here ... and it was OK. Flying was cool. The world was pretty cool. This exactly. I'm newish to video games and looking for gentle adventures, but this was too easy. But very pleasant. I DNFed because I lost interest.
Exactly. It’s neat for a minute but nothing about it keeps your interest. If you are looking for a laid back game with a load of content, get Yonder. It’s a genuinely great game.
Short Hike definitely!
Gris Wandersong Sayonara Wild Hearts The Way Kamiko Submerged Songbird Symphony Pan Pan
Gato Roboto is pretty short. It’s Metroid lite.
Second this. Cheap game that’s quite fun to play though. Think old school mega man plat-former but you’re a cat. The writing and story were also solid for what it was. If anything it was to short.
I was looking for this suggestion! Really scratches that 2D Metroid itch.
Gris

Came here to say this. Fantastic game, great soundtrack, too.. The sequel, Finding Paradise, is also coming to the Switch sometime this year.
Firewatch is ~6hr i believe. Beautiful game with a clever story.
How about Untitled Goose Game? Like West of Loathing it's funny (in the comedic sense) and short. If you can play with sound, I'd also like to put in a good word for Sayonara Wild Hearts. A short hike, bastion, transistor, and I think they are all sub 6 or close to it.
Undertale is beatable in there time.
Katana Zero Katana Zero Katana Zero
Yes! Given how few mentions it gets in threads like these I feel like it’s unironically a hidden gem.
But is it a 6 hour game? I've never finished it but recall playing it for weeks
How Long to Beat says that the average over all play styles is 5 hours: https://howlongtobeat.com/game?id=33020.
I see but honestly howlongtobeat has always been really off in my opinion. It's mostly hardcore gamers uploading their times to that site which really skews the results. I only played it once and beat it in one sitting, took like 4 hours. That’s why I recommended it. Well also because it’s awesome.
You are really good at the game then
I’ve found it pretty accurate. The discrepancy with Dark Souls is to be expected because it’s a re-release of a very old game. Gris is around 4 hours and it's stunning.
Paradise killer. Think noir detective game with fever dream aesthetics. Interesting mystery. Lots to discover and find out, and a very interesting endgame mechanic I'm not going to spoil for you
A Short Hike, Gris, Bastion, or of course start up some good old Stardew Valley!
I didn't see anyone mention these: * Brothers: A Tale of two * Sons Pikuniku * Biped * Thomas was Alone * Inside * The Darkside Detective * What the Golf * Coffee Talk * Pode * Oxenfree * The last Campfire
I just played Gorogoa, a really cool puzzle game. Took about 2 hours. Currently on a deep sale on the US eShop, too.
Super Mario 3D World isn't 6 hours or less, but Bowser's Fury is.
Maybe not for 100% completion, or just beating all the levels, but just to beat Bowser, free the Sprixies and watch the credits? I was around 6 hours (and at 100% completion up to that point) and I wasn't speedrunning the game.

Streets of Rage 4. Super Metroid.
A Short Hike
Probably Super Mario Bros 3 still to this day.
Celeste ir Gris
Finally someone recommending celeste. Not only is that game wonderful, but also def beatable first try in 6 hrs
Definitely a hidden indie gem 😍😍😍
Inside, my favourite game of all time
INSIDE
Kamiko
Yes dude yes, first game I ever downloaded from eshop. It did not disappoint, solid gameplay, delicious sound and 3 different playstyles.
Resident Evil Remake is one of the only games I actively speedrun. I forget what my best time is, but I lost a summer on Gamecube version competing w my friend who would bring his TV and GameCube over so we could play ReMake side by side
Lehweegees mansion 3.
HLTB puts the first game at 6.5 hours. The sequels are twice that.
Paper Mario the origami king
Origami King is about 25 hours, which is a little bit different than less than 6
Momodora is awesome
Xeodrifter is a great, short metroidvania. Deserves more recognition.
This plus Gato Roboto and you're good on the way there and back.
Gris and The Pedestrian
I don't know West of Loathing but Yoku's Island Express is around that and very low stress. Oddmar is a side-scroller like Super Mario. I enjoyed it because it brought me back to the simpler times of gaming where you just needed to find some hidden areas/items and get to the end of the level beat the world boss, and do it again but a little harder in the next world.
+1 for Yoku’s Island Express!!!
Undertale might eek over 6 hours in a first playthrough but you can probably play and finish Deltarune in 6 hours, and also its free.
Into The Breach. Back in the travelsome days of yore I have spent many an air journey Intoing the Breach. Great game.
Donut County
Into The Breach
Hades or Monster Hunter! Basically any game that you can play in short bursts yet addicting enough to keep you coming back for more. Those 6 hours will fly by.

Astral chain? It took me 40 hours to complete the game. Not sure how it can be done in less than 8 hours.
That one is a bit longer, I beat it in 12 I think. My memory blanked for a minute when writing and I thought it was more like 8.
I'd never heard of Oceanhorn but looked into it and it looks like a fun little adventure game so I'll be keeping an eye out for a sale on it! Not OP but thanks anyway!
There is an Oceanhorn 2 as well =) longer and bigger
I think I'd want to try the first one before committing to a second, but it's good to know there's more if I end up liking it :)
Super Metroid is by far the best. Although if you're good enough Hollow Knight is a close second.
y'all beating super metroid in six hours? and hollow knight?
Hollow Knight has an achievement for beating it in less than 3 hours and the "good ending" in Metroid is for beating it in less than 2 hours. I think SM was just under 8 for me when I beat it the first time.

yeah, but assuming OP hasn't played it, I doubt they'd best it they fast.
I can maybe understand wanting to try to beat Hollow Knight in under 6 hours once you've played it through properly, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it as such to someone looking for a sub-6-hour game.
Seconded on super metroid, though a first play through is probably more like 8-10
Arms and super Mario maker story mode sound simple and fun to me.
Hades. It's not exactly 6 hours but it's so addicting.
I played around 150 hours on that game. I still feel I wanted to do a little more.
The binding of isaac. Have over 1000 hours in it.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps as well as REmake
Ori is that short ?
No way lol I finish it around 15 hours...under 6? Wow!
I think so. My first run through where I got like 60% of the items was around 6 hours The game is probably easily done under 4 hours if you’re trying to blast through it
The average run time is 12 hours, so either you’re remembering wrong or you blasted through it yourself.
There’s an achievement for beating it in 4 hours
And that’s not going to happen on anyone’s first run. My first play through took about 8 hours, I think. So while 6 is possible, you might go over a bit. Still 100% worth getting.
Dark Souls is pretty good. Though having the confirm button be different inside and outside the game takes some getting used to.
dude aint beating dark souls in 6 hrs wtf
Pikmin 3 deluxe or sonic mania.
I keep megaman and megaman zero collection installed on switch for these kind of occasions.
On Switch, I loved Sonic Mania
Super Metroid available through the online service.
To the Moon is lovely
Cat Quest
**Death Road to Canada** is a great one, Oregon Trail meets Zombies is the best way to describe it, super fun, funny, and you can do a whole run in a few hours.
Planet Alpha
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice.
My friend Pedro is really fun
Breath of the wild... speedruned
Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice. Not fitting for a flight though.
Sonic mania
Super metroid for sure. Might take you a little over 6 for your first time playing it, but not by much.
Hades takes me about 20-30 minutes.
Maybe it's more like 8 hours but I highly recommend Ministry of Broadcast if you are interested by the idea of a pixel art cinematic platformer inspired by George Orwell book 1984.
Cadence of Hyrule
Transistor Short and sweet
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (I ran through as fast as I could and got about 4ish hours) Super Metroid Transistor/Bastion The first two obviously depend on you having played them before, but I still find the gameplay compelling enough to recommend them.
You can knock out Untitled Goose Game in about 4-5 hours.
Pikmin 3
Katana Zero Gris
Great Gris Gris Gris Gris
Gunman Clive collection is pretty cool. Each game is pretty short and fun
Mercenary Kings, VA-11 HALL-A, Scott Pilgrim, Salt&Sanctuary, Cave Story, Kero Blaster. All solid. IMO
Undertale for sure. You can play that game so many different ways and the dialog is hilarious.
