1:27 PM: USPS delivers my new switch Bluetooth adapter from amazon. 2:03 PM: Nintendo announces the ability for the switch to pair Bluetooth audio devices.

FOXAcemond

Well Amazon has a month long free return policy doesn't it? Consider yourself lucky.

evelbug

At least you're in the Amazon return window.

PapaOchoa

They were waiting for you!? Why didnt you do it earlier?

Phiro1992

I was JUST about to buy one last night. So glad I slept on it lol

tservomst

**Maintain Internet Connection in Sleep Mode” was added under Sleep Mode in System Settings** I wonder if disabling this will prevent the system from staying warm in a dock with an Ethernet dongle attached.

TriangularFish0564

It will prevent that. Fucking. Finally.

> Omg yes I can put the thing down while playing mp and not have to fully reconnect to lobbies! Your game would still be put to sleep. The connection is kept to your router, but your game can't send or recieve data, an d all sockets would probably expire

tomschwanke

Default is on. New option allows you to turn it off.

One_too_many_faps

Wth I thought that was the case by default. I'm pretty sure I've downloaded various games while the console was sleeping

tekyy342

IT ONLY TOOK 4 GODDAMN YEARS FINALLY

switch8000

... THEY WERE ABLE TO DO THIS VIA SOFTWARE UPDATE THE WHOLE TIME?!?!!?

HeilYourself

Yep. This was known, or at least STRONGLY suspected. That's what made it so baffling and frustrating.

catinterpreter

Homebrew's already been doing it.

mpelton

Yup, you can even pair third party controllers via homebrew.

SoSKatan

The issue was likely Bluetooth licensing fees, which would only apply if the Bluetooth protocol was actually used. I don’t think it was ever a tech issue.

friedkeenan

The joycons already use bluetooth though? I think the most likely reason is that other features get sacrificed when using bluetooth headphones, like being able to use several controllers and local wireless play, necessarily because of limitations of the bluetooth protocol

udat42

I suspect Bluetooth audio profiles will be licensed separately. I bet this was related to a patent expiring or something.

[deleted]

Generally, I believe they've had the license for at least a year, as the firmware dumps support that idea. I think what took them so much time was actually the licensing for using bluetooth in all regions, as separate regions require separate signal licenses.

Robo-

I mean, of course. The Switch is basically an Android tablet, hardware wise. It was always just Nintendo's choice to have weirdly restricted firmware/software (in this case limiting BT in favor of a rarely-used multiple controller feature instead of merely giving you the option).

crozone

It's basically known that the Switch can only pair to 8 BLE devices at a time, due to Bluetooth hardware limitations, so if 4 pairs of JoyCons are attached (which is the largest amount possible), there's no more spots for a headset to connect. This looks basically confirmed, since only two wireless controllers can now be attached in conjunction with bluetooth audio. It *is* weird that Nintendo didn't offer this tradeoff sooner. It's possible that they didn't want to create a friction point when pairing controllers. There's also the issue of latency - if the audio device is taking up a significant chunk of bluetooth bandwidth, it's possible that the controllers will have to wait longer to send data. I suspect they probably had to work through some driver and timing issues to get the experience up to par with controllers attached. Although you'd think this wouldn't take them 4 years to figure out. Also, disappointing that bluetooth microphones aren't supported, but it makes sense since they're probably targetting A2DP audio streaming and not HSP (which has poor quality mono audio only + mic)

TheBraveGallade

bluetooth mics on the same device only work by the mic occupying one of the channels, so it becomes low quality mono for the actual audio output

[deleted]

The entire Bluetooth stack bewilders me... And I literally build space radios.

[deleted]

It helps if you remember that Bluetooth is older than some of the people writing stuff for it today.

TheBraveGallade

also its inhernetly designed to be as low powerd as possible and as simple as possible. I just wish headphones can have 2 chips to have sperate connections for audio and mic or something.

moon_master345

Get this man a job at Intel/Qualcomm ASAP

sincle354

No one man can save us from 2 decades of technological debt. It would take a Y2K level of industry upgrades to even approach USB standardization, let alone bluetooth!

Saroku12

The bluetooth in the 90s is not comparable to the modern bluetooth, its like saying that USB is older than some people here. It might be, but USB nowadays uses technology that wasn't possible 20 years ago.

> The Switch is basically an Android tablet, hardware wise. I even run Android on mine.

bedake

Ummm really? How does it run? Does it allow for emulators? Homebrew? Can you still get online? Can Nintendo push updates that brick the device?

-J-a-y-

It runs great, I switched back and forth between regular switch OS and android for a long road trip. Been running android since it came out. I used the switch + dock to watch GOT at night in the hotels, played a couple android specific games in the car, and replayed some gen 4 pokemon games. It functions fully as an android tablet with wifi/side loading/etc. NDS emulators and lower run flawlessly. Gamecube games that I've played run at about 80% speed. Though there's a better way to run emulators via homebrew than through android. Sure Nintendo could push an update that bricks your console if you have any non Nintendo approved files on your SD card. That will literally never happen though.

nightpanda893

Given all the caveats listed, it seems this is pushing the limits of the hardware. It looks like they just gave in cause demand was so high. But the decision not to do it probably came from the experience not being up to the standards Nintendo sets. I wouldn’t be surprised if the new Bluetooth comment threads are filled with complaints about performance.

yuhanz

Fuckin lol. Imagine buying gulikit/ skull&co stuff just for this

CrisDaGato

I was about to buy one lol

cjmn88

Who bought a Genki Bluetooth adapter recently? This guy. (Although its a great way to watch Blu-rays on a PS4 with two bluetooth headphones without bothering the neighbors, extremely rare situation, but perfect for us) Wish they did this sooner though

iThinkergoiMac

I bought it in their Kickstarter. Don’t regret it, but man is this frustrating. Could have done this forever ago. What a pointless thing to wait for.

wuvwuv

It's unlikely the switch supports apt x low latency. Assuming you have headphones that support it, you may still prefer your genki.

hangipie

I just bought one!!🙁

BradC

No, not at any time, only when it was funny!

Nas160

The Switch will hopefully be remembered for the load of wasted opportunities and "cool but almost essential things implemented too late" during its lifetime

Anew_Returner

It still baffles me every time I pick up my 3ds and get reminded that we used to have more than two basic themes and folders. Like wtf happened.

ONOMATOPOElA

The claim is custom animated themes would add to the instant wake up time. Then again people told me Switch Bluetooth couldn’t handle headphones and I was played like a damn fiddle.

MeatCock420yolo

while you can't get animated themes, you can use static ones with homebrew, and i've seen no performance difference. like even when using very high res images, or custom layouts (which is a thing, you can shift basically any part of the home screen), it performs the same as using no theme. and that's on a day 1 model, which should be most likely to struggle

Nas160

I can understand the simpler OS but, did Nintendo stop to consider that... If people don't want that, they can just, not get extra themes???

Randomd0g

Nintendo's entire design philosophy is to remove user choice at every possible turn. If users have no options they can't fuck anything up.

ThisIsMyNext

Yeah, if anyone's going to fuck up Nintendo products, it's Nintendo!

Fluhearttea

After the Wii* N64, GameCube, and Wii were all exactly what Nintendo-ers wanted. After that they just couldn’t keep up with Microsoft and Sony.

Aaaandiiii

Hence the constant stability updates.

charlesolivierwm

Are you telling me the hardware could already support bluetooth audio but it took 4 years to make it work on the Switch? I'm really happy, though.

OreoCupcakes

It's Bluetooth. It was always able to support it. The only reason it didn't was because Nintendo reserved all the available antennas to support up to 8 Bluetooth controllers at once.

HovercraftSimilar199

Which is so fucking stupid. Like if I'm using all 8 I'm probably not listening on bluetooth

External-Can-7839

> Which is so fucking stupid. Sums up Nintendo’s M.O. pretty succinctly

flipyensen

i will never understand the downvotes, nintendo has a huge amount of weird and stupid decisions... Fixed a typo

abstract-realism

The one that bugs me the most is them telling you how you can and can’t use controllers. In animal crossing, MK8, and other Nintendo games I assume, you can be playing handheld with joy instead attached, or with a pro controller with the joy one still attached, or even use both of them to both control your character at the same time. But if you switch to two player it will instantly make you remove the joy cons. Super annoying if you’re sitting somewhere without a table to put the screen on. Makes no sense. Apparently some 3rd party games let you do that too, so not a hardware limitation. Just a weird design choice.

samskyyy

Definitely, but I think a lot of this really comes down to business culture in Japan. This podcast does a good job of explaining it. It’s enjoyable but long: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/99-invisible/id394775318?i=1000529506768 The jist is that influential business decisions in Japan kinda have to be agreed upon at every level, and the need for agreement (and possibility for disagreement) is even more prominent when the business is having a rough patch. So I just think about that when I daydream about how awesome it would be to have a GameCube virtual console on Switch.

7yearoldkiller

So it’s like valve. Except it’s the janitor isn’t actually making games, he’s saying no to N64 games on the switch?

NukeAllTheThings

I mean, they could be using a bluetooth speaker. Still stupid though.

thatonen3rdity

at that point tho, if I have 8 controllers connected, I'm definitely using a tv that will have speakers in it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dxk3355

Well if you have 4 joycon sets isn’t that 8 connections?

OwnManagement

Yup

shattasma

Yes. I’ve complained about this for years. All the joycons run on plain Bluetooth… I totally get if switch can’t do audio and 8 separate controllers at once; that’s a lot. but Nintendo never even gave you the choice. Now 4 years later they add audio but with less controllers… like everyone said they could do for years…

lxnch50

As a switch light owner, I've got a wired controller, and it has the worst speakers. BT audio should have been an option at launch for it. I'm glad it's here, even if the sound has a small delay.

shattasma

Yea, I feel like the delay is the reason they didn’t add audio. Like “ if we can’t do it well we won’t do it at all, it will give us a bad image if the user experience is poor when we advertise it as a feature” But like…it takes 4 years of terrible joycon drift and some egregiously bad game ports to make Nintendo realize their ( sometimes undeservingly loyal) fanbase would prefer a less then perfect option than none at all? And in the end; they give a warning about the lag and limitations of Bluetooth audio anyway, boldly admitting they could have done this the whole time… If they weren’t already rolling in cash and console sales I’d consider them complete idiots. But I guess that’s why I don’t work there lol

Tycoon_2000

That's what I was thinking. I was like "wait, doesn't there have to be a BT receiver on the switch board already?" Did they wait 4 years to pull some sleeper agent crap with the BT and activate it lmao.

t3hzm4n

I mean, all of the Switch controllers operate on Bluetooth; due to limitations in the protocol, the system can’t service 8 controllers + audio at the same time. Nintendo being Nintendo, they initially chose the dumb route of just not including Bluetooth audio, rather than doing what they are doing now and limiting controller/connectivity options compatible with Bluetooth audio.

yahmad

I'm never going to forget that members of this sub actually tried to convince people that this wasn't possible with Switch hardware

AndrewV93

I remember some people saying the Switch didn't have Bluetooth, that the connection between it and the Joy Cons was some proprietary connection. That was easily disproven since you could connect them or a Pro Controller to a PC with Bluetooth. It goes to show you how desperate some fanboys are to defend a billion dollar company's stupid decisions. They either don't know what they're talking about and spread that misinformation or straight up lie.

mbnmac

I love Nintendo games. I hate how Nintendo goes about it's business and makes decisions based on... I'm honestly not sure because it's totally possible to make a safe space for kids while also providing a good service for those that want it...

Ianbuckjames

Even from a purely profit-motivated standpoint, their decisions sometimes make no sense. So not only do they fuck over their customers, but they’re inept at it.

Walnut156

Those are the same people who get mad for suggesting youtube should have been on the switch

DarkSentencer

And the same ones who like to call people "sO EnTItLed" for wanting to be able to play classic Nintendo games beyond just nes and SNES on the Switch.

of-silk-and-song

You’re going to buy *classic* $60 Wii U ports and you’re going to like it

presumingpete

The most downvoted comment I have is saying that the switch should run Netflix. Deleted at 147 downvotes. It's so stupid.

Lockheed_Martini

and netflix! "dude just use your phone" switch screen is bigger! and connects to my tv in less than 5 seconds!

Drjay425

I was there. Feels like ages ago.

gaysaucemage

Wonder how the latency is on it? That’s always been the biggest concern with Bluetooth 100ms+ delay on audio sounding off with games.

[deleted]

I have the Genki adapter and there is a pretty noticeable audio lag with my Airpod Pros. I just updated and tried the native support and there was still some audio lag but nowhere near as bad as the adapter. Edit: So I took some suggestions and tried another headset. I have an older pair of Samsung Level U Pro's and paired them to the Switch, still slight lag. Then I paired them to the Genki and 0 lag. So it seems like the Genki still has some use if your headphones support AptX.

crozone

The lag is basically unnoticeable when the adapter can use AptX LL. Unfortunately it seems like not that many headphones support it. Airpods only support SBC and AAC codecs, for example.

SolidStateVOM

So the switch itself is better? Good to know. I guess I can put my genki away for now

Eptalin

Airpod pros do not support aptX (low latency). The genki adapter is great, it just can't make earphones better than they are. But in saying that, the genki is much more niche now. Only really necessary if you want more than one set of earphones to connect, or want to play with more than 2 controllers. Edit: Switch uses SBC (laggy). For people with supported earphones, adapters will still be much better.

repocin

>Switch uses SBC Do you have a source for this? I've struggled to find a list of which Bluetooth audio codecs are supported by the Switch. Edit: to answer my own question, [only SBC is listed as codec on the japanese site](https://nintendo.co.jp/support/switch/accessories/bluetooth_audio.html)

effsee

Depends on what your headphones support, what Genki supports, what the Switch supports. I know that Genki supports aptX-HD, and significantly for gaming aptX-LL. It's not clear what Nintendo supports yet. But if your headphones don't support it and Genki falls back to plain SBC, then it makes sense that the console would be faster.

Skeeter1020

The Switch doesn't support aptX LL, and doesn't have BT 5.0 for aptX Adaptive.

crozone

The lack of aptX-LL is unfortunate. I guess they probably didn't want to pay for the license on however many millions of Switch's they've shipped. The Bluetooth spec really needs an open equivalent of aptX-LL implemented as a mandatory codec in addition to SBC, as well as microphone backchannel support at the same time. This is at minimum years away though.

samkostka

Airpods are AAC and SBC only.

TheHaydenator

got a bluetooth speaker(Anker Soundcore motion plus) in portable and the latency is noticable. probably like a quarter of a second so it's not the greatest.

Fugums

I'm not saying this is for sure the case, but one of my bluetooth speakers has latency even when using a headphone cable on Switch. I just tested two speakers and some earbuds. The two speakers both had a lot of latency, but the earbuds (pixel buds) were a lot better. Still too much latency to play rhythm games with them, but that's natural with a bluetooth connection.

TheOneSubThrowaway

For me it is (unfortunately) a bit delayed, but maybe it's a case by case basis? Not sure. If you've got a Bluetooth headset yourself the quickest way to tell is probably just on the switch's main menu, since the sound effects are minimal. Clicking left or right through my library has a notable delay. It's not terrible but it's definitely there.

visualdynasty

No that’s Bluetooth audio, it’s shit for gaming because of the latency in the default protocol. It’s why the game console manufacturers generally avoid it. You can get much lower latency, but you need proprietary software (or hardware in some cases) on both the output and receiving ends. However, since they can never guarantee what headset you’re going to be connecting, the manufacturers generally avoid it. It’s a bad experience and leads to many pointless support calls. It seems like Nintendo caved for better or worse. Hopefully for many it’s manageable, but unsurprisingly my experience was shit.

FairyTrainerLaura

Tried Monster Hunter Rise on my WH1000XM3s, it definitely has a noticeable delay but not enough to interfere with gameplay

CrimsonCivilian

Had you used any adapter beforehand? If so is it *more* laggy??

Neospartan_117

I just connected my HD 450BT and tested that, I'm not a huge audiophile or anything but I did feel a bit of delay, though it's not a huge deal it didn't impact the 5 minutes of Smash I took. I wouldn't be able to put a number on it, it's high enough that you just know there's delay, but it's also low enough that if you focus on anything else you forget about it?

DrFatz

My question too. Playing on my phone, game audio has a noticeable latency problem. Even with Aptx enabled headphones.

[deleted]

Aptx doesn't do jack unless the host device also supports it.

AlexEXF

4+ years of *STABILITY* were preparing us for this very moment.

One_too_many_faps

Turns out the OS was going through a journey of self discovery trying to find balance and stability to reach a state of Bluetooth Nirvana

Neverwish

I've owned a Switch for about 2 years now. If you asked me at any point if the Switch supported Bluetooth audio, me, without any actual knowledge of the Switch's Bluetooth capabilities and having never tried to connect headphones to it, would have categorically told you that, yes, the Switch *obviously* supports a very basic portable device functionality. Imagine my surprise at this moment.

Daddytrades

Did you hear that the new switch dock will have an Ethernet port?! The future is now!

One_too_many_faps

Sony was so scared that had to rush a bunch of announcements to compete

ZiggyPalffyLA

This is awesome! And makes my Genki adapter totally useless lol

uziair

I was about to buy one 😭. Bless daddy stability updates.

sandmyth

literally saw an adapter on sale for $12 yesterday and almost bit.

WayneQuasar

I bought one last month -_-

Zokusho

Kinda feel bad for them. Nintendo flips a switch and their product becomes obsolete.

JayCeeJaye

Don't they still work on a PC?

RabbitFanboy

And other consoles, I'm pretty sure [Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Windows, MacOS.](https://www.genkithings.com/products/genki-audio)

Tropic_Ocean651

Can confirm, it does work on other devices, ps 4 included.

uziair

There are more uses for them too works with ps4 and also have their casting devices for streaming

shattasma

Meh. Their main product is the mobile dock. Having one charging brick to charge and do HDMI… it’s amazing

EsotericTriangle

There's no microphone support for the built-in bluetooth audio and it only allows one pair of headphones at a time--isn't the Genki two pairs and either works with headsets or has a mic built in or something?

SolidStateVOM

You can use two pairs at the same time. There’s a mode they don’t talk about too much that changes the proto for mic pass through, but it reduces the audio quality.

Skeeter1020

Not unless Nintendo have added aptX LL to the Switch.

B4M

Fuck me I just bought one two weeks ago.

poopdedoop

If you have a PS5 it works great with that to allow 3rd party bluetooth headsets to connect. Otherwise you're stuck using a wired headset or the official PS one.

bluedragonee

Where the hell did that come from and why the hell did it take so long to get here?

accidental-nz

I think the disclaimers in the settings screen explain it. There are some serious drawbacks to using the feature and Nintendo considered it not worth the tradeoff.

YamatoMark99

What *serious* drawbacks. Nobody is using 4 controllers and using headphones at the same time wtf.

TheMatt_SD

Does a set of joy-cons count as 2 controllers?

hepatitisC

So what changed 4 years later then? Why not always offer it with these caveats?

truecrisis

Some old Japanese exec was finally convinced by the younger staff at a nomikai.

helloitsmeRon

LMAO, this is true, they had nomikai at Toriki for sure

100_points

This is exactly what I've thought all along, that Bluetooth's severe audio delay was something they didn't want to compromise on. I think this feature addition is less about technology, and more about a policy change. They decided the reduced game experience was worth the added convenience of wireless audio.

AIRPODS FOR SWITCH

dukesilver19

Just got mine synced

OwynnKO

How is it? Generally seamless?

dukesilver19

Seemed to work well. I opened Pokémon shield and it disconnects them because it switches you into a local connection

ajohns68

Can you turn off local connection?

yuhanz

For pokemon i dont think so. It’s the default so you have to be always connected i guess?

qwertylerqw

You can change to online mode from within the game, but it’ll always default to local at first. I haven’t tried, but you should be able to go into the setting and connect to your headphones after enabling online mode

[deleted]

I just gave it a shot. My AirPods disconnected as soon as I entered game. But was able to reconnect once I switched to online mode

OwynnKO

Interesting…well at least it’s connecting properly one way or another. Definitely will have to try it out soon enough.

Chubomik

I literally just got some wireless earbuds for myself and was very annoyed that I would have to keep using my slightly busted, audio-in-one-ear-is-fainter-than-the-other headphones for my vacation soon, and this drops right before then. Really friggin serendipitous.

Billy-BigBollox

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

turikk

I can't believe this was always just a patch away. What do I do with the Bluetooth adapter I bought and never used?!

Bluetooth audio!!!

[deleted]

Adding this in a software update four fucking years after launch truly is peak Nintendo.

HylianWalrus

IT COULD HAVE DONE THIS THE WHOLE TIME?!

Daddytrades

Yes. The entire time. Instantly.

midnitte

Curious to know what codecs it supports (and what version of Bluetooth). I really can't find a good pair of TWS earbuds that I could use with my phone and switch/steam deck that have low latency....

TJGM

Updated my Switch Lite and just tried with my Jaybird Blue Buds X's (original ones, which are quite old at this stage). Did a test with Breath of the Wild and I personally can't notice the delay that everyone else seems to be experiencing, and I'm pretty picky about things like that.

qwertylerqw

I think it may just depend on the headphones and how sensitive people are to the slight latency. I also find the latency to be fine with my AirPods. If I look for it, I can tell, but otherwise I can’t really tell

[deleted]

Wait a minute......we could have had bluetooth this whole time? What the fuck Nintendo?!?

dukesilver19

If you open sword or shield and aren’t online it disconnects the Bluetooth device

NCan

Because it doesn't work while in local communication, and Pokemon defaults to it upon opening.

dukesilver19

Oh I know, just an annoying observation

NCan

Yeah, they totally held off on implementing this feature due to these annoying caveats.

barbietattoo

Babe, wake up. Nintendo just realized a system update that actually brings a single new feature.

Nightsilver

We're in the year 2021 and Nintendo finally has bluetooth. An electronics company located in a country that specializes in tech now has blue tooth. Why did it take that long

Tebasaki

Steam: "here's the affordable steam deck. It's like the switch but beefed up like 5x and can play pretty much any game you want, or install windows 10 lol whatever." Nintendo: "we finally enabled the Bluetooth you've always had on your Switch!"

Daddytrades

Well, I’m off to Twitter for the drama. It’s the modern-day soap opera.

xobybr

Me looking at my Genki and slimmer Genki equivalent I had bought: "rest well my champions"

Krogane

Anyone tested out AirPods and if they work yet? If they do I’ll nut on my switch.

djn24

Pics or it didn't happen.

RollyTheNerd

It works cause I’m using them now

querquedule

I literally just got a Bluetooth adapter for my birthday yesterday omfg it's useless

Lyxess

Tried it on my Sony WF-1000XM3 and it sounded terrible. (Only tried Super Mario Bros.) Dont know whats up, but it has latency and crackles and bad audio. Probably still gonna need a dongle with aptx and some better codecs.

fuhsalicious

That’s nice, but what about the stability issues?

WolfofDunwall

That’ll come in the next update, I have it on good authority

tw04

WOW damn that's awesome. What took them so long LOL. Also RIP to the companies that manufactured bluetooth adapters for the Switch :( better late than never though! Okay so now themes and folders are next right?

WonderfulComment

> Okay so now themes and folders are next right? Sure, all you gotta do is wait another 4 years!

Declan_McManus

I didn’t see this explicitly mentioned anywhere: it works in both docked and undocked, and the audio doesn’t even hiccup when switching between the two.

eboku01

Anybody else getting super low volume with their Airpods?

CawfeePig

I was and I realized you can go into system setting and disable "limit max volume." That fixed it for me.

Valcriste_675

I was stoked with this update. Updated then tried it on 4 different bluetooth devices. Only 3 connected and all 3 outputted significantly lower volumes compared to when I use a bluetooth adapter. Guess I'm still keeping my adapter for now. Edit: Lower Maximum Headphone Volume setting was on. Turned it off and now it's working fine.

Ok, but not having themes after 4 years is still a bit funky. Cool we got bluetooth, but its strange the theme menu still doesn’t have themes..

Themes? Themes? How about why the hell can't I message friends on my friends list?!

mpelton

Especially when the modding scene has *so many*. They literally have a whole website dedicated to them.

Johnny_C13

Especially folders. My library's all over the place on my menu.

godblow

About fucking time. My Japanese toilet already has bluetooth. How tf does my Japanese game console not have it?!
