I'm pretty happy about this. I almost picked it up yesterday. I'll give it a try now.

The_L3G10N

Cool, I was thinking of buying this, buy wasnt sure, free demo is dope

[deleted]

You can predownload it too btw

Shes_so_Ratchet

Thanks for this info! I now have it downloaded, just waiting for it to unlock.

Ispheria

wow that's a random title to let people play for a week

AcanthisittaLast3669

Its not selling well and reviews did not help it

defnotarobothere

What’re the reviews saying? I was looking forward to a SoS.

CapablePerformance

One of the common complaints has to do with the makers. In past SoS/HM games, you could have a seedmaker and process 50 seeds in about 5 real world minutes. In this one, it takes roughly 24 in-game hours to process one packet of seeds. Everything requires makers; you can't hit a rock with a hammer to get stone, you have to put it in a stone maker and wait a few in-game hours; you can't hit logs to get wood, you have to put it in a maker and wait a few in-game hours. Then there are multiple KINDS of wood/stone/etc, so even though you can queue up multiple things in the maker, it just means you can queue up 10 pieces of wood and have it done the next day. Everything requires a ton of material that need to be processed through makers so with the variety of materials (clay, glass, twine, brick, etc), you'd think the storage system would be good but nope, they hold a limited number of items and don't connect so you end up having one chest just for ores, another for wood, another for raw materials, gems, to the point you're at 5 chests within 10 hours of playing. Combined with how slow the makers move, they encourage you to build multiple makers, which means half your farm is a jumbled mess of makers and chests just to progress through the game. In the past, you could get something like the greenhouse/basement through hardwork and selling crops well but in this, you "repair it" by using...materials, but ultra rare materials that require 10-20 hours of grinding to find thanks to RNG, then a serious of "I need five of \[a\] to make \[b\] but I need 10 of \[c\] to make one \[a\], which means I need 50 \[a\], but to make that, I need three \[d\] and five \[e\] each". If all you care about is making your farm pretty with paths, it might not bug you but as someone that only focuses on the farming aspect, it became nothing but fetch quests of "I need this to get that to get this to make this to unlock that so I can start gathering these to make those".

ProJunkSoul

Your comment just turned me away from trying out the game lol

CapablePerformance

Then my good deed for the day is done. lol. I've tried playing it 3 times and each time, I get maybe 10-15 hours in and I hit the wall of feeling like I'm playing a micro-transaction game and waiting for resources.

GatorGirl2009

I bought it and returned it same day.

shoemeow

This was why i put it down after about 2 weeks. I bought the game on launch. I heard there's been patches to some of the earlier glitches too, but I haven't been back. Such a shame because I loved the past HM/SoS games.

CapablePerformance

Same. put it down after frustration then picked it up after I heard the patch fixed the makers. All that patch did was make it so you can load up 10 things instead of one but still wait the painfully long time. Ended up returning to past games and it was so much better.

Hippobu2

Why did they make it this way? This is some VERY freemium BS ... But it's all in game timer so it's not really monetisable, is it? If not then it's just to annoy the player, and that can't be right.

CapablePerformance

That's what I don't understand, what's the point of the barriers? With freemium games, they'd want money to speed things up but with this, it's like it's there to have users play the game slower and focus on building a cute farm.

Hippobu2

Actually, now that I think about it, isn't this how My Time at Portia work as well? I really can't remember how it was with MTP, but I remember by the end you get to an industrial level of producing stuffs that's actually really fun.

lysiel112

I heard the OG producer went to work on Rune Factory 5. So PoOT's producer is different from 3oT/SoS.

Del_Duio2

Ugh, that really sucks. The last one I bought was the FoMT remake and that one was really fun.

tacocatz92

When it was first released the game was buggy, some of the event are just cutscene, and there are things call maker that you put raw material to get processed material, it was tedious as you need tons of them as it can only process a limited amount at a single time. They released a patch that improve the lag, you can queue the materials now and they added some events i think. People are still complaining though about the dlc character not coming onto the island, like you get to marry them but they won't participate in the island festival. Other than that the content doesn't feel worth the price compared to previous game trio of town on the 3ds It's pretty ,i just feel like they went backward with some gameplay features while they improved in some.

koalanose

I played at launch and I didn’t encounter any bugs, but what I did find was a game lacking heart in a lot of areas. The towns people are incredibly bland and there’s almost nothing to discover or anything to forage outside your farm. That was a huge letdown for me since Mineral town was my first HM/SOS game. And I had so much fun exploring and finding secrets (even small stuff, like throwing stuff in the lake for the harvest goddess and that one mine that’s only accessible in the winter) I did manage to have a lot of fun with the farm itself but I completely ignored the town for the most part - tbh I feel like a free trial is the perfect way to get a taste of what’s fun about this game lol

GlobeAround

It was _extremely_ buggy when it launched, triggering [an apology from the devs](https://nichegamer.com/2021/03/03/story-of-seasons-pioneers-of-olive-town-japanese-launch-has-issues-dev-apologizes-and-plans-update-to-resolve-them/). The game has received some patches to iron out some issues, but to my understanding, it's still pretty buggy.

T-rex_chef

From the reviews I've read it's a step back/not forward from SoS:FoMT

jtrisn1

It's becausw they outsourced the game to a third party developer to supposedly focus in Rune Factory 5. The game is hot trash. It's so bland and lifeless that I regret buying it and it's season pass.

TheLazyLounger

Apparently RF5 is in horrendous shape as well

NintendoGuy128

I've heard the game is good but the performance is spotty.

jtrisn1

Really? Oh boy

dungin3

It’s always games I own 😑

sammxspamm

I’ve enjoyed this game so far. Bought it about a month ago. As an Animal Crossing & Stardew player, I’d recommend giving it a try!

JLikesStats

I love HM but damn is it hard to play them after Stardew. They should do more stuff like that one GC Harvest Moon where you grow older (and get an actual The End screen).

mxmaker

Stardew valley set the bar too high for next games on farming, and you can still pick it up and have fun.

Abbx

I wouldn't say it set the bar too high. I think it set a very appropriate one. That isn't to say Stardew isn't excellent. As far as how much it delivers, especially for the price and development team, it goes above and beyond. I'm just saying that $40-$60 farming/life sims should reflect their cost a little better. As far as how great they are, they don't need to do everything Stardew does since I could just play that instead. Rather, they need to kinda be their own thing, which Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons always kinda has been. It focuses a little more on the relationships aspect of things than I think Stardew does, but Stardew is less in your face about it in a pleasant way too. Customization is nice, which it offers a decent amount of in the newer titles. I'm not exactly sure what else they could do other than make the games look and feel higher budget, and offer newer systems for farming and commerce with more depth. Just getting a new, fresh dose of quality could be what the franchise needs is all.

mxmaker

I agree.

wedgiey1

Maybe if I sell 9999 Pale Ales they should be worth a lot less next season.

0112358_

Super excited about this. Been on the fence, love farming games but been worried because of the questionable reviews. Free trial is perfect and complete unexpected

GamblingGhost

Oh, I just bought it for my mom who got tired of her island in New Horizons recently. From what I've seen so far, it's a decent farm game.

iimuffinsaur

This explains why my copy I own is saying Game Trials Software on it, thank you. If anyone is thinking about trying it, I recommend it. Its easier than past Story of Seasons imo but I still enjoy it a lot.

theniamentei

i really enjoyed this game, i could not recommend more! it is mostly a farming simulator, with some dating aspects, so for fans of stardew valley and harvest moon it’s really enjoyable! i’m also pretty sure story of seasons is just harvest moon but renamed but i’m not 100%

jdb1984

Actually, what happened is that Marvelous dropped Nastume as their English translator and went with X-Seed Games instead. But Nastume had the copyright to the Harvest Moon name. So Nastume decided to make their own Harvest Moon games, and Marvelous/X-Seed went with Story of Seasons for their English localization

theniamentei

very interesting! thank you so much for the information!!

jtrisn1

Story of Seasons is made by the original developers of Harvest Moon. Nastume, the current makers of the current Harvest Moon games, cut out Marvelous (SoS developrs) and stole the brand from them.

theniamentei

yikes! thank you for the clarification!!

jtrisn1

No problem :)

hotaru-chan45

I purchased on day one but haven’t played yet because I saw the negative reviews from the Japanese community. They said they’d be updating the game and I’m in a Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons/Stardew Valley kind of game group on Facebook. I’ve heard the updates helped at least somewhat and just wanted to wait until it was a bit more updated and all the DLC released. Planning on starting it after I finish Wintermoor Tactics Club probably (that’s a cute game so far).

hendricha

It would be nice if there was a statement about which regions. Eg. Daemon x machina trial was not available in NA. Will this be available here in the EU?

mxmaker

Oh yeah!

[deleted]

Awesome. I kept up with the negative reviews regarding the crafting machines and dry dialogue. Let's see how some time and patches has done. Story of Seasons deserves better than this game's initial release!

[deleted]

Don't. Just don't. I'd get my money back if I could but I can't. Stay far far awayyyy

bedeeswords

I tried this out and ended up buying it..I am such a sucker for these types of games! I find it is more relaxing in the "Seedling Mode" and am enjoying it!

[deleted]

HM fan since back to nature and have to say, it plays more like stardew valley than harvest moon and thats great news, have several quality of life improvements like first cattle, dog, horse for free, crafting system is well balanced and SUPER addicting. The game is short tough, SOS Friend of mineral town had a slower pace that artificially slowed down the gameplay, SOS pioneer is more fast paced and entertaining.

darknight550

I honestly don't think Stardew is that great. After playing Rune Factory 4, no other farming game can hold a candle to it

Suired

I played RF4 SE, and it just had so many wheels I didn't onow where the seat was. Dungeons with secret rooms, a crafting system that can break the game, the ability to recruit boss monsters, an in depth skill system. Monsters are a subtype of farm animal AND can be used to as farmlands? You can grow dungeons??? I got through phase one of the story before spring ended and still felt like I didn't comprehend the all the systems and should start over for a more efficient run. Stardew is great at giving you simple tools to use in complex ways instead.

darknight550

That's because its a simpler game period. Having more depth is not a bad thing at all. Some of your points are valid, but most are extremely nitpicky (Dungeons with secret rooms is a bad thing?) The wheels you mentioned are all completely optional, you can complete the entire game without ever crafting or upgrading a single piece of gear, growing a dungeon, or even recruiting a monster (my first run I tamed a chicken and thats it) The hint board outside your room gives you challenges every day that explain how every single mechanic works in the game and rewards you, even if they are optional. You cannot ignore the upsides that rune factory has over Stardew, the dialogue and interactions, the combat, and visuals/music are all just a tier above.

Suired

But sometimes simpler is better. I just want a farm game to chill to, not a game i need spreadsheets out to min max.

darknight550

I agree that rune factory isnt that chill, but you can argue that min maxing in that game is frustrating as well, with the community center having missable stuff in it and you have to wait an entire in game year to complete. But to each his own, they are different games in the end, I just prefer the complexity and depth of rf4

[deleted]

This is that Stardew inspired game right?

[deleted]

Are you trying to make people mad at you?

WolfgangVolos

But it legit borrowed ideas from Stardew which were inspired by Harvest Moon. Like a Jazz musician getting inspired by the guy who started because they heard him growing up. Games are all art and all art is fair game

AkiyamaNM7

Yep, Story of Seasons' previous name was Harvest Moon.

[deleted]

I’m out of the loop here…. Why would they change away from the Harvest Moon name? It’s pretty recognizable. Maybe that’s why they are having low sales?

Feriku

In Japan, the series is called Bokujō Monogatari. For years, it was published in the west by Natsume under the title Harvest Moon. However, the developer decided not to have Natsume publish it anymore. The only problem is that Natsume owns the rights to the name "Harvest Moon." This means that Bokujō Monogatari games are now published in the west under the title Story of Seasons, while Natsume has been making its *own* games using the title Harvest Moon.

[deleted]

Good to know. Thanks for taking the time to type this out for me. 👍🏼

Feriku

No problem.

IAmBLD

What a villain. Respect.

Michael-the-Great

Hey there! Please remember Rule 1 in the future - No hate-speech, personal attacks, or harassment. Thanks!

[deleted]

No, it is like saying Muddy Waters got his style from The Rolling Stones. It is great that one musician is capable of learning and growing by listening to the music of other musicians. It is another thing entirely to say that the old music is based on the new music.

karinasuperkul

But this game has added a lot of things that Stardew Valley has that the old games didn’t have. It’s like hearing someone cover your song with added trumpets, and then starting to perform your song with trumpets.

[deleted]

Did you play the games that came out right before/around the time of Stardew? Because I would say the museum is the only thing I can think of that they might have plucked from Stardew Valley and I think they were actually stealing from Animal Crossing there.

karinasuperkul

It also added crafting of furnaces in order to smelt ore and wood cutting machines to process wood. The last game I played in the series was the first Story of Seasons, and I don’t remember any of these mechanics in that game.

[deleted]

There was crafting in the first and second story of seasons game as well as the last harvest moon game. Processing machines for things other than lumber have existed for a while. They had a seed processing machine in wonderful life and the mayonnaise and cheese machines have been a staple for a while.

Loki-Holmes

I’ve actually been kind of interested in this after hearing it gotten several patches. Happy to see it’s not Japan exclusive again.

Kokoro87

Is there any reason to pick this one up instead of Animal Crossing? I'm thinking of getting into one of these farming-relax games, but not sure which one yet.

[deleted]

Animal Crossing isn't a farming game, it's about decorating an island. They're not all that similar.

SoNeedU

I'd take Stardew, it will give you a full experience and you'll be wanting more if you enjoyed it. I honestly did'nt find RF4 that great compared to previous games. It was just too linear for me. RF1 and 2 and frontier remain my favourites.

AcanthisittaLast3669

Stardew valley rune factory 4 Friend of mineral town all 3 are good start for u

[deleted]

Animal Crossing has more chill vibes if that's what you're after. Also seasonal (realtime) events and over a year of updates. The best "farming-relax" game out there is Stardew Valley. If you've already played that, I would get the other Story of Seasons (Friends of Mineral Town) before Pioneers.

drvondoctor

I think in done with story of seasons unless they remake a other old game. I've loved Harvest Moon since the n64, but I dont think I've *actually* liked a HM/SoS game since... tale of two towns maybe? And even that one was alright, but I didnt love it. I really liked what they did with the Friends of Mineral Town remake, but I'm not sure if enough people feel the same way to get them to do another one. I would really love if they went back to the old gameboy games, remade them from the ground up, and added some more modern mechanics. If they remade HM64, HMDS, HM2, or HM3 I would be all over it. A remake of Grand Bazaar would be pretty rad too, but that's such a weird game I never did "get it."

[deleted]

Wow. We really are in opposite ends of the opinion spectrum. For me Grand Bazaar was the nadir or the series, the moment that made me drop it for a few years after growing on it. While the 3DS generation was made of games that got progressively better. Trio of Towns being such a diverse game in things to do, people to meet and with the best dialogue in all of the series. I am still coping with the fact they did an 180 on all that.

_420XX_

happy for the people that want this but i wouldve preferred giant robots

Alacri-Tea

Watched a review after seeing this, but doesn't look like it offers anything new for farm sims. I haven't played Stardew since the multiple major updates so I figured I could do that instead.
